THE BORDER WATCH ARTICLE - THE ROUND BALL SUPERSTARS

The Round Ball Community Football Development Program was the toast of
the soccer community on the weekend when Director of Football Scott
Dickson’s brainwave to back local talent against their city
counterparts paid off.

Only a fortnight ago he reported to The Border Watch that Mount
Gambier’s junior players were every bit as good as those in the city
and now his beliefs have been confirmed with all three locally
sponsored juniors making it into the top 10 to represent South
Australia at the top 50 weekend in Melbourne for the FOX8 reality TV
series Football Superstar.

Callum Ferguson, Thomas Renzi and Cameron Hart were selected to
represent the region a week ago during pre-trials run by the Round
Ball Community Football Development Program and were offered an all-
expenses-paid package to attend the Adelaide Roadshow by Steplen
Constructions.

The boys’ performances in Adelaide delighted Dickson.

“I could not be happier with the results and the boys performance at
Marden Stadium on the weekend. The boys worked hard under very
difficult conditions. It was very hot, the standard of applicants was
very high and the television crew filming every move made it very hard
for all the boys.”

The roadshow started with a turning and shooting test at a goal target
and it was Hart who led the competition after the dribble and turn
test and the passing test. The fourth test involved players passing
three balls at a target 35 metres away and the fifth test was an
agility test. Renzi performed well in the passing and agility sprints
and Ferguson also made his way up the leader board.

The sixth and final test was the 1 v 1 component with the highest
placed competitors playing against the lower ranked individuals and it
was Renzi who competed first and was held to a three all draw. Both
Hart and Ferguson had to win their battles and despite the oppressive
heat Hart won 9 goals to 2 and Ferguson crushed his opponent 9 nil.

All the applicants were then assembled in the middle of the pitch and
were called forth one by one to face head coach and mentor to the
final 15 Vitale Ferrante. Each boy then walked forward and in front of
the cameras and was informed of their fate. With baited breath Hart
finished fourth, Ferguson fifth and Renzi held on despite the draw to
finish in ninth position.

The top 10 were then assembled in front of the cameras and given
official invitations to the next stage of the series: the Top 50
Weekend in Melbourne.

Series producer of Football Superstar Marty Benson was full of praise
for the boys, “I was really excited by the talent from Mt Gambier, it
was great to see their drive and determination.”

He also praised the initiative and the work that Dickson has done for
the development of football across the region.

“Bringing players all the way from Mt Gambier to Adelaide underscores
just how massive football is in this country. They’re great players,
and they could be the rough diamond Ernie Merrick is looking for.”

The next stage of the competition will see the boys flown on an all-
expenses-paid trip to Melbourne over the weekend of April 24 and 25 to
be put through their paces by Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick.

At the end of the weekend the boys will once again be handed their fate.

This time, however, the prize will be much greater – an opportunity to
move to Melbourne for a month, live in the Football Superstar mansion
and be vying for the ultimate prize of becoming the new Football
Superstar, signing a professional contract with the current A-Leaguechampions and a one-year scholarship to Monash University.

Jets trial Peter Zois as replacement for Ante Covic

FORMER Willem II goalkeeper Peter Zois will begin a three-day trial at the Newcastle Jets today after coach Gary van Egmond admitted he was tired of waiting for out-of-contract Ante Covic to decide his future.
The Jets offered Covic a two-year deal in October, but the fringe Socceroo has not given them an answer and has since been linked with Sydney FC and two Japanese clubs.
Since tabling the deal with Covic, the Jets have lost captain Jade North to Korean club Incheon United as well as Adam Griffiths (Gold Coast United) and almost certainly James Holland (AZ Alkmaar).
Van Egmond is keen to retain Covic, but he needs to start finalising a squad with the Asian Champions League looming.
"What we need to do is prepare," van Egmond said.
"We have made an offer to Ante. At this stage he has not got back to us. In that respect we don't know if he is interested or not interested.
"If it is a case where he is hedging his bets then we need to do the same. We need to cover our bases.
"If this boy is good and he ticks all the boxes, it will be a case of we move on him and let Ante go."
Zois, 30, is from Melbourne but has spent the past six years playing in the Dutch first division, mainly as a back-up keeper.
He made 23 appearances in four seasons at Willem II from 2003 to 2007. Before that he had two seasons at NAC Breda, earning three first-team games.
He returned to Melbourne this year and has joined Victorian Premier League club Altona Magic.
"He has been in a full-time environment, which is important in regard to being able to cope," van Egmond said.
"We just want to have a look at him and see what he is like."

WHO IS PETER ZOIS?

Peter Zoïs is an Australian footballer who was released by Willem II Tilburg in 2007.
Zoïs is a goalkeeper who was born in Melbourne and made his debut in professional football in his native Australia, being move to Holland and being part of the NAC Breda squad in the 1999-2000 season and joining Willem II in 2003. He also had a spell in England, playing for Purfleet.
Zois also spent a short spell at Cardiff City, being brought in on a trial period due to an injury to Jon Hallworth.
He has represented Australia at all youth representative levels and holds an EU (Greek) passport. Peter is currently on trial with the Newcastle Jets who are looking for a replacement for current keeper Ante Covic.
We are currently in discussions with Peter's management to bring him to Mount Gambier for a goalkeeping and coaching session in early May. Stay tuned for more details.

BORDER WATCH - THE FINAL THREE

In near perfect conditions the regions finest talent gathered at Grant High School for the Mount Gambier pre-trial’s of the Fox 8 television series Football Superstar.
The trials were the brainchild of The Round Ball Community Football Development Program and Director of the program could not be more pleased with the end result. “We had a fantastic range of talent on display and the three winners should do us proud next weekend. The production company North One Television made contact early Monday morning and the finer details are being put in place for our boys to be well supported and prepared for the trials.”
A large crowd was on hand to watch the boys trial and it was Blue Lake’s young gun Callum Ferguson that led the group from the first Rebound Shooting drill to the final 1 v 1 Competition.
Ferguson went on to win six of the nine activities including the 1 v 1 Competition and the Yo Yo Intermittent Test. ‘Callum was committed from the start, he trains well and is in very good condition he scored 162.75 points out of a potential 180 and led all day. He did very well and with his SASI and state background he should do well next week”.
Thomas Renzi finished in second place and Dickson was pleased that he returned to Mount Gambier to be part of the trials. ‘Thomas is an outstanding athlete and despite the fact that he is not even playing soccer this year in Adelaide I am sure a lot of people will be talking to him in Adelaide next weekend”. Renzi, who has recently moved to Adelaide to study at Flinders University is playing football this year for Myponga and has already represented the Uni at swimming and cricket. ‘Thomas started the day slowly and after the first two activities was sitting outside the top 10. He started to climb the leader board during the fitness activities and did very well during the Yo Yo Test and played off against Callum in the 1 v 1 Final to move into second position”.
Cameron Hart is well known in soccer circles and has the potential to do very well in the competition. ‘Cameron is the complete article, he is strong, hard as nails and very good on the ball. He is older than Callum and this could be his last chance to be spotted and I think he will rise to the occasion this weekend”. Hart represented South Australia at under 14 level and was fortunate enough to tour the United Kingdom with the state side. He has won the league medal and his clubs major trophies for years and only two years ago he was selected into the Southern Skies All-star team in the Southern Skies Tournament in Brisbane.
Major sponsor of the concept Stephen Smith from Steplen Constructions was delighted with the day and keen to point out “The final three are all very talented but it must also be pointed out that Cameron Saint from Millicent United only finished 1 and a half points behind Hart at the end of the day. The all expenses prize we have put together with Gasparini Transport have been won but anyone can apply to take part in the show by accessing www.fox8.tv. Who knows we may have just made it possible for a local junior player to become a Football Superstar”
The Adelaide Roadshow takes place this weekend at Marden Stadium, 65 Lower Portrush Road, Marden SA this Sunday.

Auditions: Football Superstar

Another season of FOX8’s Football Superstar is about to get underway. The winner of the series will be signed to Melbourne Victory for one year and win a scholarship to Monash University.
Foxtel’s Brian Walsh said, “Football Superstar launched as the most successful FOX8 local production in 2008, breaking new ground in becoming the first sport based reality TV series in Australia.
“The first series proved an overwhelming hit amongst male viewers aged 18 – 35 and perfectly compliments the exciting line up of local and international programs to premiere on FOX8 over the coming months.
“Foxtel is proud of their association with Football Federation Australia and the success of Football Superstar is further proof of the sports growing popularity in Australia.”
Contestants aged 16-20 will need to get a move along to apply. Advance applications will secure a place at the trials while those who turn up without sending in an application first are not guaranteed of a shot.
