CENTRALS WIN ALL GRADES

Centrals has kicked off the 2009 WBSA season in fine style with all 5 of it's teams winning in the opening round against the Sharks.
A Grade won 2 - 0, B Grade 9 - 0, Under 17's 13 - 0, Under 14's 7 - 0 and Under 12's 14 - 0.

BLUE LAKE TAKES THE POINTS

The game started in terrible conditions at Malseed Park.
Portland took the field with a new look side and was hoping to start the season off with an away from home win. Blue Lake had other ideas and went in close to full strength with the notable absence of Callum Ferguson. The game got under way with nerves and conditions making it hard to play fluent soccer. The game seesawed for the first 20 minutes or so until Blue Lake gained the edge in the midfield with Davison, Walters Mcrostie and Chatindara starting to find their feet. The Blues made a number of chances but weren’t able to finish off in front of goals, until Mitch Thomson opened his and Blue Lakes account. Soon after Michael Walters latched onto a loose ball and slammed home from close range. The Blues were in full swing now and solid defence led by captain Strachan, Reiner, Domaschenz and Loosz produced many attacking moves with Guess and Thomson causing many headaches for the Portland defence with their speed. Not to be outdone Portland got back into the game and scored two goals in quick succession to get back into the game. The Blues looked rattled at this stage and if not for some bad finishing and some brilliant goalkeeping by Armandi things could have been worse. Just before the stroke of half time a long ball caught the Portland defence out and Guess and Thomson raffled it before Thomson slotted it calmly past the Portland keeper to go in 3-2 up at the break
The second half started and the Blues were determined to make amends for their lack of concentration late in the first half and had more steel about their game. The Portland team looked like they were running out of steam and without subs on the bench they were struggling. The Blues took advantage of this and were well on top when Guess after a number of squandered chances finally made one count with a cool finish past the keeper. Blue Lake kept up the pressure and could have scored many more but for wasteful finishing and some fine close in saves by the Portland keeper (who was their best player). Youngster Alex Domachenz capped off a fine day when he slotted a 22 yard piledriver into the roof of the net. Mitchell Thomson scored soon after to get his hat trick. The Blues then had some bad luck with a serious knee injury to playmaker Walters. The Blues used the bench late bringing on young Beau Branstone, Anthony Davison (first game back for 10 years) and Damien Ferguson (his debut game for Blue Lake). Although total domination by this time another lapse allowed Portland to grab a consolation goal late in the game.

SOCCER STAR VISITS REGION

Former Australian national goalkeeper and experienced European campaigner Peter Zois will visit the region this weekend as a guest of The Round Ball Community Football Development Program. Zois who has represented Australia at the World Youth Championships, under 20 level and was part of the 2000 Olympic squad has played alongside the likes of Lucas Neil, Brett Emerton and Vince Grella.
At club level his credentials are even more impressive as he Collected the Championship title with NAC Breda in 1999-2000 gaining promotion to the Ere-divisie (Holland’s top league), qualified to play the Intertoto cup with NAC Breda 2001-2002, qualified for the UEFA cup with NAC Breda after finishing fourth in the league 2002-2003, qualified to play the Intertoto cup with Willem II 2003-2004, reached the Dutch cup final with Willem II 2004-2005 and qualified for the UEFA cup with Willem II for reaching the Dutch cup final 2005-2006. His successful 9 year European career saw him graduate through the Victorian Institute of Sport, play and coach in Europe and develop professional relationships with some of the highest profile goalkeeping coaches in Europe. “ I have had a very fortunate career. I was lucky to enjoy a long European career and I am delighted to look back on my fixtures with the national team and playing in Europe with fond memories. I am still quite young and feel I have a lot to offer and working with The Round Ball is going to be a pleasure.” said Zois.
Director of Football at The Round Ball, Scott Dickson could not be happier as he spoke of the visit of Zois, “Peter has had a fantastic career and we are pleased that we have been able to secure his services. His playing experience will be of benefit to our more senior keepers however it is his coaching experience both here and abroad that is of real interest to me. He has worked with Queensland Roar‘s coaching staff, the coaching team from last years FA Cup winners Portsmouth and has assisted with Uhlsport Goalkeepers Clinics in Holland for the past 9 years”.
Zois will kick off his visit on Friday with the second in the Night of Inspiration series that saw Travis Dodd brought to the region by The Round Ball last year. “This night of Inspiration will have a different focus to last years however the message will be the same, Zois’ presentation will take place at Gambier Centrals Soccer Club due to nature of his playing and coaching experience and we are delighted to share this initiative with Centrals.” Dickson said. Doors will open at 6.30 and the presentation which will include a PowerPoint of photos and memorabilia collected over his career.
On Saturday and Sunday morning Zois’s attention will turn to the regions goalkeepers with sessions programmed for the day.
While in the region Zois will stay at The Blue Lake Holiday Park.

SEWFA GAME ON

The wait is nearly over for round 1 of SEWFA’s 2009 season.

Following on from the pre-season carnival held recently, the first senior matches kick off this Saturday at Blue Lake Sports Park.
County and Portland will clash in the first game of 2009, with County looking to make amends for their defeat against Portland during the carnival. With both teams under the guidance of new coaches to the league, each will be looking to take the honours in what should be an exciting and evenly matched game.

At 3pm Villa meet the finely tuned City, in a match which should see City take the points. Villa are reeling from the loss of quality players from last year, and were undermanned during the carnival, forfeiting their matches. Hopefully, some successful recruiting by coach Chris Harris will see Villa reform to be the premiership contender they were in 2008.

Wanderers take on Palace at 3pm in a rematch of both the carnival final and the 2008 league final, which saw Palace claim the prize on each occasion. Wanderers will be keen to meet Palace again so soon to gain some retribution. It will be essential for Palace to have their squad firing and showing persistence if they are to break down the rock solid Wanderers defence, who will be looking for a quick break to turn the tide.

Millicent host United in the first away game of the series. If Millicent have their full contingent of players, United will have to be wary of this youthful side who will be eager to claim the first points of the season on their home turf. With a mix of youth and experience, a focussed approach will be needed by United if they are to keep Millicent in check and claim the points.
In a mirror of the senior draw, Palace will meet Wanderers and City clash with Villa in the Under 14 fixtures. Wanderers claimed the league premiers last year and if the carnival is anything to go by, look to be strong contenders again this year. Villa, however, also lay claim to some strength and speed in their side and should also perform well this season. But at this stage of the season, anything can happen

DIAL A TONER PRESEASON CARNIVAL

Last Saturday heralded what looks to be another exciting season for women’s football in the region. The Dial-A-Toner Pink Ribbon carnival unveiled new look teams, welcomed new players and coaches to the league and displayed quality football.

The first games started in misty rain but that failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the Under 14s as they took to the park for the first time in 2009. The junior sides played a round robin competition, with the Wanderers claiming victory at the end of the day. A round two 2-1 victory over close rivals Villa, who were triumphant last year, edged Wanderers to the top of the ladder and they remained in that position, winning the remainder of their matches in the round.

Senior games were contested in two groups, with the winners of each group to meet in the final. A clerical error saw a worthy City team ineligible to compete in the final and the second placed team in Group 1, Wanderers, stepped up to meet the leader of Group 2, an undefeated Palace.

Local breast cancer survivor Tracy Bald was on hand to toss the coin for the final. This poignant moment served to remind everyone as to the fundraising objective of the day, which raised in excess of $300 due to a raffle and player, referee and business donations.

Having already played three games throughout the day, players took to the park in what proved to be a marathon match. Whilst Palace surged forward time and time again, the resolute Wanderers repelled the attack each time. It was just sheer determination by Wanderers defence that seemingly broke down the skilful Palace play and the scoreless game was taken to extra time. Still deadlocked after a further 10 minutes, the match was again to be decided on penalties as it was last year. It was a tough initiation for Palace’s novice keeper Bec Hillyer, who stood tall in goal and saved twice. An experienced Maddy Fry stepped up for Wanderers and also claimed a couple of saves. In the end it was new Palace signing Jenna McCormick who sealed the final result to claim the lead and the silverware.

With trial matches this weekend, the final preparations will be put in place for the start of season 2009 on 2nd May.

The popular Junior Development Squad will rejoin fixtures on Saturday afternoons at 1pm, with trainings on Mondays from 5pm until 6pm at Blue Lake Sports Park under the guidance of new coach Althea Inglis. All girls between 5 and 10 years of age are welcome to join.

Football Superstar is Here!

MELBOURNE VICTORY SET TO UNEARTH FOOTBALL’S NEXT SUPERSTAR. FOXTEL will join forces with Hyundai A-League Champions Melbourne Victory to unearth Australia’s next Football Superstar when the hit reality series returns to Fox 8 for series two in May.
Football Superstar, produced by North One Television, follows the journey of 15 aspiring footballers who dream of one day playing in Australia’s premier Football competition, the Hyundai A-League.
Last year’s series proved a smash hit on FOX 8, with viewers tuning in to see Perth’s Adam Hett taking all before him in securing a contract with glamour club Sydney FC.
Melbourne Victory will provide the path to superstardom for one talented footballer in series two, with two time Hyundai A League winning coach Ernie Merrick to put the contestants through their paces in search of that x factor that might prove the difference between victory and defeat in season 2009/10.
“There are so many talented young footballers out there, this is a wonderful opportunity for one of them to stand up and hopefully realize a dream.
‘The ability to perform under pressure and in front of an audience can quite often prove the difference between a good player and a brilliant one. With the camera’s rolling 24/7 this will give me a good indication on who has the presence and state of mind to perform on the biggest stage of all.” Mr Merrick said.
As well as securing a one year playing contract with Melbourne Victory, the series two winner will also score a scholarship to Victoria’s prestigious Monash University.
Football Federation Australia CEO Ben Buckley supported Mr Merrick’s comments.
“Football Superstar was a triumph for FOXTEL and we’re pleased to hear it will return in 2009.
“The show’s success is further testament to the support FOXTEL has provided the Hyundai A-League since its introduction in 2005.” Mr Buckley said.
FOXTEL Director Of Television and Marketing, Brian Walsh claimed Football Superstar was the perfect fit for FOX 8 and predicts another exciting season for viewers to enjoy.
‘Football Superstar launched as the most successful FOX 8 local production in 2008, breaking new ground in becoming the first sport based reality TV series in Australia.
‘The first series proved an overwhelming hit amongst male viewers aged 18 – 35 and perfectly compliments the exciting line up of local and international programs to premiere on FOX 8 over the coming months.
‘FOXTEL is proud of their association with Football Federation Australia and the success of Football Superstar is further proof of the sports growing popularity in Australia,” Mr Walsh said.

Arsene Wenger team talk documentation

Supposedly this was found in a hotel room after Arsenal played Newcastle, left by one of the players...the document contained the following
Team meeting 19th September 2008
The Team: A team is as strong as the relationships within it.
The driving force of a team is its member's ability to create and maintain excellent relationships within the team that can add an extra dimension and robustness to the team dynamic.
This attitude can be used by our team to focus on the gratitude and the vitally important benefits that the team brings to our own lives.
It can be used to strengthen and deepen the relationships within it and maximise the opportunities that await a strong and united team.
Our team becomes stronger by:
Displaying a positive attitude on and off the pitch
Everyone making the right decisions for the team
Have an unshakeable belief that we can achieve our target
Believe in the strength of the team
Always want more - always give more
Focus on our communication
Be demanding with yourself
Be fresh and well prepared to win
Focus on being mentally stronger and always keep going to the end
When we play away from home, believe in our identity and play the football we love to play at home
Stick together
Stay grounded and humble as a player and as a person
Show the desire to win in all that you do
Enjoy and contribute to all that is special about being in a team - don't take it for granted.

SUPERSTARS ON THE WAY TO GLORY

Dreams can come true and for three talented soccer players a dream could become a life changing event this weekend as they take part in the Top 50 Weekend as part of the Fox 8 Reality Television Football Superstar.
Cameron Hart, Callum Ferguson and Thomas Renzi have successfully moved through the Mount Gambier pre trials conducted by the locally based Community Football Development Program The Round Ball, graduated from the Adelaide Road show and now find themselves this weekend on the biggest stage in domestic soccer.
The three boys will by competing against the finest young talent in Australia for a spot in the Final 15 of the Football Superstar Television show and with that comes the 1 in 15 chance of becoming Australia’s next Football Superstar.
The Football Superstar Experiment as Scott Dickson, Director of Football at The Round Ball refers to it, has been an outstanding success with the three boys, their mentors and The Round Ball Program gaining nationwide recognition.
“When we started negotiations with North One TV and Fox 8 we were not even sure if they would grant us permission to run pre-trails, six weeks later we have three local boys in the South Australian Top 10 and are packing to be flown to Melbourne to spend the weekend at the Novotel and train with Ernie Merrick and Melbourne Victory, it is hard to believe” Dickson said.
Hart has dominated local soccer for nearly a decade since shining at his first club The Gambier City Sharks and since moving to Gambier Centrals has risen in stature to become a bonefide star of the local game. Hart has been a stand out at every occasion and has taken out club and association medals as well as been a successful member of the Specialist Soccer Program at Grant High School.
“I would like to thank The Round Ball and particularly Scott and Tom for their help over the years. I would also like to thank Steplen Constructions for putting together the original Sponsorship Package. They have pushed me and over the past few weeks have trained me up to five times a week. I feel good and I am keen to do my best” Cameron said after a recent training session.
“Cameron has always led by example, he is hard as nails and when focussed is a match for any opponent” commented Tom Dickson Senior Sports Director of The Round Ball. “I first met Cameron when he was nine years old through working with his father David at Timbertech and I have tried to help out ever since, Cameron and his family have shown trust in our family and we are delighted to support him through his trials”
Hart has focussed on the challenge at hand and being the eldest of the three has proven to be advantageous for the nineteen year old. “I am a senior player at the club and with no junior matches or carnivals I have been able concentrate on Superstar. I have been training with Scott and the other boys for the past three weeks and this is the fittest I have been in years” Hart added.
Gambier Centrals senior coach Phil Muller is delighted with the success that Hart has had and wished him all the best for the weekend ahead. “On behalf of the club we would like to wish both Cameron and Thomas the very best of luck. We are proud of their achievements and that they are flying the Gambier Centrals flag”

Blue Lake’s Callum Ferguson who has just returned from a holiday on the Gold Coast was born into soccer through the Ferguson family bloodline. His father is Blue Lake senior coach Sam Ferguson and his uncle Lewis is a long serving club legend. Jo Lovett, President of Blue Lake Soccer Club wished Callum all the best “The members, players and committee of Blue Lake Soccer Club wish Callum Ferguson all the best in his “Quest for glory”. Regardless of the outcome he has done himself, his family and his club proud”.
Ferguson continued to train in Queensland under the watchful eye of his father on a program negotiated with Dickson. “Callum has a fantastic competitive spirit, he is very fit and his speed and condition are a huge asset to him. He has played at the highest level representing the state and being part of the South Australian squad that took out the National Championships a few years ago. Despite the fact that he could not train with the other boys for the last fortnight I am confident he will be prepared for the weekend” Dickson commented.
Thomas Renzi was playing Australian Rules Football for North Gambier in the under 12 competition when Scott Dickson discovered his talent. “I am not sure you can say I discovered Thomas, however I am keen to say that I convinced him to turn his hand to soccer for a few years” said Dickson. “When I was coaching the Lower South East SAPSASA squad I asked Thomas to attend and despite not playing soccer at the time I selected him to represent the region and the rest speaks for itself. Thomas is an exceptional sportsman who has represented the region and the state in several sports. The camera loves Renzi, they filmed him a great deal in Adelaide and spent time with his parents and girlfriend so I assume that means he will get a fair share of air time. This weekend though it will not be about Thomas’s hair or that the three of them come from Mount Gambier. Next weekend they will be measured on their football talent and their potential. They are strong tenacious athletes who can mix it up and are keen to succeed the most difficult thing will now be what are they prepared to do to make it through to the next stage? I was talking to Josip Skoko’s brother Ante the other day and he said one of the trials Josip had as a junior was with a boy from Africa whom the village had funded to attend the European trial. They had told him that the village was dying and there was no water, they told him his signing on fee would buy the village a well and provide a lifeline for the African Community. When you stand next to player with so much on the line can our middle class family backgrounds and experience measure up? Next weekend these boys will be put in a similar situation, does one of them have what it takes to be Australia’s next Football Superstar? Who knows? I will tell you on Sunday night” concluded Dickson.

THE WORLD GAME

Footballer puts wind up referee
A referee ordered a penalty to be retaken in a Sunday league football game when an opposition player broke wind as the ball was kicked.
The Chorlton Villa player got a yellow card for the noise which was classed as "unsporting behaviour".
The team, who conceded a goal on the second take, went on to win the match 6-4 against International Manchester FC at Turn Moss in Stretford, Manchester.
Villa manager Ian Treadwell said their conduct was "normally exemplary".
One of our players 'broke wind' and only the referee heard it and he booked the player," he said.
"The other player had the penalty saved because it was a bad penalty; it was nothing to do with any noise. They were as shocked as we were as to why."
Mr Treadwell said he was waiting for the Football Association to contact them after it had received a report.
The Manchester Publicity league club faces total fines of £97 for three dismissals and two yellow card bookings from the game.
'Just hilarious'
Mr Treadwell said: "We are not a dirty team and we like to play football.
"While I won't condone the actions of the players, it is an emotive game and some of the players were sent off for entering into conversation with the referee.
"This has come at a bad time in the season as we don't have sponsor and we are looking for a new sponsor for next season."
Pauline Riley, secretary and treasurer of International Manchester FC, said both teams were "very friendly".
"There's no animosity. It was just hilarious," she said.

Josip Skoko T Shirts Order your today!

Josip Skoko: Long road to the top

Like any natural-born footballer, all Josip Skoko has ever wanted to do is play. At the age of six in Australia he would go to church wearing full kit - including shin pads - under his Sunday best....
There is, however, another country that tugs at his heart strings. Croatia was part of Yugoslavia when his father emigrated to Australia from the Croatian enclave in Herzegovina in 1969 to find work and escape Marshall Tito's communist regime. Ivan Skoko worked as a tree-feller, returning to marry a Croat and taking her back Down Under where their three daughters and two sons were born.
The place where they settled in South Australia, Mount Gambier, had a small Croat community. The family took on a dual identity common to the Greek and Italian populations in Australia. "Outside the house, we did things as Australians," Skoko recalls. "At home, everything was more Croatian. We kept up the traditions; the food, the music, the language. It was only when I began school that I learnt English."
With Mount Gambier Croatia FC he embarked on the road that has led him from the city on the slopes of an extinct volcano, with its caves, lakes, shipwreck beaches and wineries to a Lancashire town famous for its pier, pies and rugby league.
"Me and my brother Ante kicked about endlessly in the back yard," says Skoko. "But the big day at the club was Sunday. I went to mass in the morning wearing my strip beneath my clothes - everything except boots. Our game was first up and we spent the rest of the day watching the bigger boys play. Once I played for the under-10s, under-13s and under-16s, all in one day."
At nine he moved with his family to the Melbourne area, where he joined North Geelong Warriors and graduated to the Victoria under-13 side. "I was spotted in the national championship and chosen for the Institute. It was a world away in Canberra so I had to leave my family, friends and school. But the coaching was the best, and once I got over my homesickness and linked up with Mark [Viduka] and others I knew from Victoria, I had a brilliant time."...
The year of 2006 has thrown plenty at Josip Skoko; the good, like being awarded the freedom of Mount Gambier, along with the bad. But the resilience is beyond doubt, the desire to compete still burns and the shin pads are on.

Volunteer Coaching - Survivor's Guide 6 - 12 Years

Hello Everyone,

I have not sent out a newsletter for a while because I have been busy with an exciting new project. I have been writing an eBook called 'Volunteer Coaching - Survivor's Guide 6 - 12 Years'. It has been written for the 1,000's of coaches who volunteered or who are 'volunteered' to be the coach of their child's team and then realise they have a whole season of training sessions to do and are not sure how to fill them.
This terrific eBook takes away the worry of having to teach the players how to play. Instead you allow the fun games explained in the eBook to teach the players all they need to know. The coach simply has to organise the games and everything takes care of itself. Each game is explained clearly plus there are tips for how you can make the games even more fun, what to watch for so that nobody gets hurt and how to nip any discipline problems in the bud.
I have attached a sample and please feel free to forward it on to anyone you think would be interested.
'Voluteer Coaching - Survivor's Guide 6 - 12 Years' is available right now online at http://www.footballtricks.com/eBooks.aspx and can be emailed straight to you within hours for the incredible low price of just 17.50 US Dollars, 11.90 British pounds, 12.90 Euros or 25 Australian Dollars. Terrific value for enough ideas to fill every training session for the whole season.

Thanks
Sean

Skoko blazes Aussie trail

Ex-Socceroo Josip Skoko has been hailed by his former club as having the most professional attitude of any player officials have encountered.Cem Onuk, general manager of Turkish side Genclerbirligi, said Skoko’s professionalism had been a key factor in the club’s decision to pursue Australian players as a matter of policy.
“Australians at this club all started with Skoko,” Onuk said. “His professionalism as a footballer in the club was essential and made a difference. He left me with good memories.”
Skoko played for Genclerbirligi from 2003 to 2005 before signing for Wigan Athletic in England’s Premier League.
Genclerbirligi subsequently signed Australians Nick Carle, Bruce Djite, James Troisi and Mile Jedinak, while Mile Sterjovski spent six months with sister club Genclerbirligi OFTAS.
Onuk said he was surprised by Skoko’s honesty and lack of greed.
“We give our players a car and a home,” Onuk explained. “Skoko said, ‘I’m going to live in a villa. What do you pay for players’ homes? A thousand dollars? OK, I’ll pay the difference. I’ll buy my own household goods and furniture.’
“He went and purchased goods for himself on his own. He said, ‘I’m a professional sportsman, I have my own car and I’ll bring that to Ankara’. He had a Porsche jeep, So, for the first time, a footballer purchased his own furniture and his own car.
“I’ve been at this club for 24 years. This was the first time I’d ever seen anything like this from a player. This was the first time I’ve seen a sportsman put his own hand in his own pocket to pay for things. That was Skoko.
“But we didn’t let him pay the difference in the apartment,” Onuk said. “Genclerbirligi paid for his home.”
Skoko is now signed to Hajduk Split in Croatia, the club that kick-started his playing career in Europe over 14 years ago.
