sewfa round 8‏

City's Emily Birch shields the ball from Monique Ianella

SENIORS

United 1 drew with Millicent 1

When these teams met in round 1, United came away with the points and several goals and were keen to emulate that game but Millicent had other ideas. With several new key signings since that first match, Millicent tested United several times but the defence held strong. After a cross from the right and the ensuing goal mouth scramble, United finished cleanly to edge them in front. Millicent rose to the occasion and scored to even the scoreline before the break. United could not capitalise despite several more opportunities in the second half and teams had to be content with a point each.

Goals: United (T Frost)
Millicent (W Robinson)

City 6 d Villa 0

City played classic football against the undermanned Villa last weekend, stringing together simple passes, which caught the opposition flatfooted. Having the extra players on the park City forced Villa to play a chasing game, which to their credit the youngsters did until the final whistle. With three goals scored in each half, City demonstrated restraint and were happy to pass the ball around until the best goal scoring opportunity could be found and then capitalised on.

Goals: City (T Grant 2, K Gilbert, J Smith, E Kourmouzis, T Kourmouzis)

Palace 3 d Wanderers 1

Despite a 5 goal win to Palace in the first round this year, Wanderers showed they have been the strong improvers, sneaking a goal early in the game to take the lead before Palace could settle into their game plan. Wanderers spent the remainder of the half defending their lead, resolutely breaking down Palace forays forward. The stylish play of Palace was no match for Wanderers who played destructive football, spoiling countless opportunities. The league leaders found themselves in unfamiliar territory down a goal at half time. However, confident in their ability, Palace resumed the match with gusto and equalised soon after the break. With two more goals added, Wanderers lost their early confidence and had to see their lead and game slip away.

Goals: Wanderers (K Seiler)
Palace (J McCormick, K Pedlar, TOG)

Portland 0 drew with County 0

With the top 3 spots fairly set on the ladder, the rest is a lottery with each team confident in their ability to claim the vital 4th position. Currently held by Portland, a win to County could have seen them edge closer to the leaders. In a fast paced match at Portland, County threw everything they had at the goal but the home team held strong and maintained their home ground advantage. Portland youngsters made several quick breaks, looking to sneak one past the goalkeeper but to no avail. In a scoreless match, all ladder positions remain as they were at the beginning of the day.

UNDER 14'S
Wanderers 8* d County 0

A brave County junior side took to the park last weekend, determined to concede less goals than the week prior and were successful in their quest. However experience and confidence on the ball were the great deciders in this match with Wanderers dominating on the pitch. Despite an 8 goal deficit at half time, the young County side showed great determination in their efforts to limit the rampant scoring. With 8 goalscorers, Wanderers were hard to contain and continued to slot another 8 home in the second half.

Goals: Wanderers (H Philp 4, M Sims 3, K Lehmann, J White, J Ferguson 2, P Ackland, C Romanis, E Thatcher)

Palace 2 d City 0

When these two sides meet, a close competition is guaranteed complete with strong attacking moves and desperate defence from both teams. Neither goalkeeper was really stretched during the first half with defenders doing the job on the pitch and limiting shots on goals at either end. Several times City ran down the wing and crossed the ball into danger and Palace were called upon to scramble the ball away but after the break it was Palace who took advantage of the ball inside the 18 yard area and scored twice, giving them their second win for the season.
Goals: Palace (I Pratt 2)

A game of 4 v 4 was played by the Junior Development Squad, with all girls showing greater confidence on the ball throughout the game. Each player has demonstrated improvement during the match, including several well executed throw-ins from beginning players and good technical ability in controlling the ball at speed.

In round 9 matches this week, County meet City at 1.30pm whilst Wanderers play Millicent and Villa play United at 3pm at Blue Lake Sports Park. Portland play host to Palace. In Under 14 matches, a top of the table clash sees Villa meet Wanderers and Palace play County.

A GRADE MATCH REPORT

Blue Lake went into this game with a full strength line up whereas Portland was missing coach Craig Taylor.
The wind was very strong, worth probably three or four goals which Blue Lake had the advantage of in the first half, and they took full control of it from the onset. Guess had the first chance when although not known for his heading prowess hit a thumping header only to be denied by the woodwork. They didn’t have to wait much longer when after only five minutes Chaindiara scored from a Ferguson pass. Within minutes it was two when Ferguson hit an audacious chip to give Arthur in goal no chance. The Blues were lining up, with chances going begging with both Guess and Ferguson coming close. Chatindiara scored his second when a shot by Thomson could only be parried by Arthur and he had an easy tap in. Portland were under immense pressure due to both the wind and the slick passing of Blue Lake. Gates, and Skinner were working overtime trying to repel all attacks and Fitzgerald and Hatten were trying to build in the midfield but Strachan and McRostie were winning everything loose. A corner taken by Thomson led to a goalmouth scramble and when the loose ball went to Guess he calmly slotted home. Portland made a rare foray into the Blues half and looked dangerous but an interception by Branstone turned defence into attack and Chatindiara could have had his hat trick but his shot went sailing over the bar. In the last fifteen minutes the Blues missed chances to Reiner, Chatindiara and Ferguson before the latter found himself on the end of a perfect pass from Guess and made no mistake with a clinical finish to put the Blues in a commanding position at half time with a five nil lead.
Portland must have soul searched at half time and came out with a much more attacking style and with the wind at their back started to put pressure on Blue Lake. They looked like they were going to score when Strachan slipped on the greasy surface but a good shot by Linck was well saved by Davison in the Blues goal. Portland continued to take the game up to the visitors but couldn’t break the backline of Reiner, Domaschenz and the Branstone brothers. The ball was going end to end and Thomson looked a certainty to score but a great save by Arthur denied him. Again both Fitzgerald and Sinner were working well in the Portland midfield but could not get the last pass right to make scoring chances. Ferguson brought another good save out of Arthur and when Guess followed up he could only hit it into the keeper again. They game was fairly even with possession but the Blues were having far more shots with the Portland defence and goalkeeper frustrating the Blues forwards. Chatindiara finally got his hat trick when his first shot was blocked but he followed up quickly and made sure with the second chance. Guess made a great run forward and if not for a well timed tackle by Miller would have netted his second. The game lost its flair somewhat in the trying conditions and finished with the score line of six nil to Blue Lake to put them on the top of the table in group B. Portland must be commended for working very hard, and they have been competitive in the cup rounds. Blue Lake now goes into next weeks game against Centrals only needing a draw to qualify for a finals berth.
Bets players: Blue Lake – Chatindiara, Strachan and Branstone. Portland – Skinner, Gates and Fitzgerald.

Socceroos vs Japan - We were there Part 3

Matthew Spiranovic's career dilemma

GEELONG'S Socceroo defender Matthew Spiranovic didn't play in last night's World Cup qualifier, but he's got plenty to think about.
His German club, FC Nrnberg has just rejoined the top flight, the Bundesliga, by winning promotion and has offered him a two-year extension on his contract, which still has another year to run.
But it is reported that Fulham, from the English Premier League, has made him an offer worth at least $1 million.
Spiranovic has missed most of this season with hamstring injuries but is keen to regain his place in the Nrnberg first team next season and all the signs are that he will take up the club's offer.
The story of Geelong's other talented central defender who has played for Australia at Youth and Olympic levels, Adrian Leijer, provides a cautionary tale for Spiranovic.
Leijer helped Melbourne Victory win the A-League Premiership in 2006 and then moved to Fulham on an attractive contract.
However, though he made it to the bench for the English club he was unable to oust its established back four as the club rose to seventh in the Premier League
So while the lure of the English Premier League with its world-wide exposure is very tempting, it is not clear that a transfer to Fulham would be a good career move for Spiranovic at this stage.
There is the additional factor that the highly technical Bundesliga suits Spiranovics style of play rather than the frenetic action of the Premier League, where physicality is much more vital.
This has probably counted against Leijer and late last season he went on loan to Norwich City, which unfortunately has just been relegated from the English Championship, the second tier of English football.

SEWFA Results Round 8

Saturday, 27 June 2009 22:01
Results of Round 8 games for the South East Womens Football Association held on Saturday 27 June 2009.
SEWFA Seniors
Palace 3-1 Wanderers
Villa-City
Portland 0-0 County
United 1-1 Millicent
Villa v City result will be published when it is known

Lew's Predictions

This Sunday sees an interesting set of fixtures for Round 2 of the Shadows / Belgiorno Cup. Sharks take on Inter at Shark Park, Millicent make the long road trip to Naracoorte, Gambier Centrals host Apollo in the match of the round, and Blue Lake travel to Portland.
Group A
SHARKS v INTER
Inter will see this as a danger game. They will not have the best preparation due to the WBSA senior select squad game against the Riverland Friday night. Inter have a number of players making the trip to Adelaide and then fronting up again Sunday; on top of that young gun Ryan Lewis has a serious knee injury.
Fortunately they have enough class to cover this and with the skill of players like Bonner, Galloway, Osman and co they will not let this game slip away.
The Sharks on their day are very good and have Lennon, Da Rocha and Weistra in top form, but they sometimes lack the cohesion needed to trouble the big clubs. They have had a lot of players out in recent matches and it will depend on their availability to whether they are able to come away with any points.
The one area that Inter are having issues with is the goalkeeper. Von Duve is still a couple of weeks from returning and stand in keeper Vorwerk strained a hamstring last week. Brett Reid comes in and I am sure that his experience will hold him in good stead.
I think that Inter would come away with all three points, but it won't be as comfortable as the 7-0 score line the last time that they met.
Lew's prediction Sharks 1-4 International
NARACOORTE v MILLICENT
Millicent would be extremely disappointed to have come so close to Inter for the second time this year with nothing to show for it. Unfortunately for Naracoorte Millicent will be pumped up for this game to keep them in touch of a finals berth.
Gregetic and Saint have been in top form recently, and both are causing opposition defences all sorts of trouble.
Naracoorte will also be desperate to get a win to give them any chance of snatching a top two spot, however with Inter in the last round of qualifying they would need to take all three points in this game. With players like Marshall, Esposito I am sure that they will give their all but I don't think it will be enough.
Lew's prediction: Naracoorte 1-4 Millicent
Group B
GAMBIER CENTRALS v APOLLO
This is the match of the round, and it should be an absolute cracker of a game. Centrals come off of a good win at Portland while Apollo only managed a draw against Blue Lake.
Apollo know that they must win this game or they could go out of finals contention, while Centrals know that if they win they are all but guaranteed a finals berth. Centrals won't want to leave it until the third round against Blue Lake to claim that finals position.
There is class and youth all over the pitch for both of these sides. Both sides are capable of free flowing soccer and have many avenues to goals. Centrals have had the wood over Apollo in recent times. Ferguson read the riot act to his young charges after the draw last week and they will be eager to atone for this.
Lew's prediction Gambier Centrals 3-3 Apollo
PORTLAND v BLUE LAKE
Blue Lake were disappointed not to come away with all three points against Apollo last week, and will be trying to come home from Portland with a win. Blue Lake will again be without regular keeper Armandi, however Davison has been doing a terrific job in his absence.
Portland responded well after their 18-0 thumping from Inter two weeks ago to be competitive last week. They will have an unchanged line up this week and also know that they can forget finals if they lose this game.
In this corresponding game last year Portland surprised the Blues with an amazing come back win. After being down 1-4 they came back to win 6-4. I am sure that Blue's coach Ferguson will not allow that to happen again, and Blue Lake should come home with a 5-0 win, as I think it will be too hard for Portland to stop Ferguson, Thomson and Guess from scoring.
At the other end Branstone, Domaschenz and Reiner have been very solid and although Portland are improving I don't think that they have the forwards to penetrate this line.
Lew's prediction: Portland 0-5 Blue Lake

Hajduk Split’s Skoko has doubt of Viduka’s international return

22.06.09 Andrew Slevison
Hajduk Split midfielder Josip Skoko believes his close friend Mark Viduka will more than likely not represent his nation again.
The duo have just been holidaying together in Croatia and Skoko spoke of the chances of the former Socceroos captain fronting up for next year’s World Cup.
“If I was a betting man I would have to say it’s a long shot that we will see Dukes in South Africa next year,” Skoko said.
“First of all he has to get back playing club football again, and there’s a question mark there on where and whether that will happen. Will he stay at Newcastle or move on?
“That said though, while he has not officially retired there is still definitely some hope that he could return for the Socceroos.”

Sony and Kaká team up for a record breaking BRAVIA campaign‏

Former FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or winner Kaká is the star of Sony's Guinness World Record-breaking BRAVIA TVC, which demonstrates the Motionflow 200Hz technology featured in BRAVIA Z Series LCD TVs.
The full effect of Motionflow 200Hz is best demonstrated using fast motion, which is why Sony's 2009 BRAVIA campaign utilises the fast-paced action of the world’s most popular game, football. The campaign depicts Kaká performing some of his signature moves inside a giant futuristic-looking spinning 'BRAVIA Drome'.
The BRAVIA Drome was inspired by the zoetrope, a 19th century device used to create short 'films' from a series of static images. The faster the zoetrope turns, the more fluid the motion between frames becomes – and with maximum speeds of over 50km/hr, the BRAVIA Drome aptly demonstrates the smooth motion of Motionflow 200Hz technology that makes it ideal for watching sport.
It took ten tonnes of steel and ten men working a full three days to assemble the BRAVIA Drome. At ten metres across, two and a half metres tall and a full 31.41 metres in circumference, it has been certified by Guinness World Records as the "World's largest zoetrope".
Click here to see Kaká and the BRAVIA Drome in action as well as some extra footage of the making of the BRAVIA Drome and a closer look at Kaká.

Phil Jackson: Role Model Coach

Watching the Lakers win the NBA title, last night I began to count the ways that Phil Jackson is a model for youth coaches.
1) He builds players' self-confidence. Trevor Ariza, who came up big in the playoffs, said he knew he wasn't going to get pulled from the game if he missed a shot, which fueled his confidence to keep playing hard. Jackson's players don't tighten up in the clutch, worried about what will happen if they miss. They play to win, not to avoid looking bad. Players don't do that if they are worrying about their coach giving up on them.
2) He develops players as leaders. Michael Jordan never won a title until Phil showed him how to make his teammates better. And now even those who called Kobe Bryant the most selfish player in the NBA, can see how Bryant has grown under Phil as a leader who makes his teammates better.
3) He doesn't let the emotion of the moment control his behavior. Phil has been called the Zen Master, sometimes mockingly, but I believe his meditation practice provides a detachment that allows him to keep his head when those around him are losing theirs (full disclosure: I meditate daily and find it helps me deal with my challenges, which admittedly are much less than those of an NBA coach).Jackson was pummeled by the press during the playoffs-for not coaching enough, for going through the motions, for mailing it in. I took his calmness instead as a sign of someone who sees the big picture-that life is filled with unavoidable ups and downs. Overreacting to a loss can disrupt a team's momentum and damage its self-confidence. Phil retained his equanimity and didn't.
4) He is a community builder. In a videotaped talk Jackson gave for PCA nine years ago, he rarely used the word team. He talked again and again of creating a community that players wanted to be part of. His masterful handling of Dennis Rodman with the Bulls was an example of bringing out the best in a troubled and talented individual by showing him what he could be part of if he bought into the team's culture.
5) He has a sense of humor about life. At some level life is absurd and recognizing that helps keep us sane. Phil is able to keep perspective with his jokes and use of irony (which, I notice members of the media often don't get!). His splicing of popular movies with game film is both fun and effective in making points more effectively than banging a player over the head with a lesson he needs to learn.
6) He's a learner. By his own admission, he started out as a control-freak, a nasty-snarly coach, like so many others, but he realized that it wasn't working for him. He embodies what PCA calls a "teachable spirit." I first met Phil when he wrote me asking permission to use some of my ideas in his coaching clinics. Our mutual friend Rich Kelley had sent Phil the manuscript for my first book, Positive Coaching, and Phil had actually read it. He is constantly looking to learn new things, even to the point of reading a book by a guy (me) who never coached beyond the high school level.
7) He fills Emotional Tanks. Phil latched on to a PCA staple, the "Magic Ratio" (5 Emotional Tank Fillers for every criticism), and used it to turn Horace Grant's career around. Grant became a key player in the Bulls' multiple championships under Phil, and he chose to come back to play for Jackson in LA late in his career.I often think that if we could get every youth coach to bump up his/her plus-minus ratio toward the magical 5:1, PCA could fold up its tent and declare its work over. By the way, it's called the Magic Ratio because kids with full E-Tanks do things that do indeed seem magical.
8) He grows on his players. So many coaches have an unpleasant intensity that grates on players to the point that they soon want to move on, even if they've had success with that coach. Phil's style of treating players as total human beings causes players to feel better about him the longer they play for him. Derek Fisher after last night's final game: "He doesn't try to control you as a coach. He empowers you to be who you are...He doesn't put himself in the way. He let's us do it." Earlier he said, "I love that man." Wow.
9) He's competitive in the truest, best sense of the word. Contrary to what some believe, PCA is not anti-competitive. Life is full of competition and kids need to learn to compete effectively. It is the win-at-all-cost mentality that is the enemy. Phil embodies competition in the original sense of the word: a "striving together" to be our best, rather than the degraded form of competition that David Shields calls "De-Competition," in which anything goes if it helps you win.
10) He Honors the Game. No, he is not perfect and yes, he did criticize officials' calls in the playoffs, which led to fines from the NBA. But, as much as any coach in pro sports, he coaches with an underlying respect for officials and opponents. In his videotaped remarks to PCA nine years ago, Phil talked about being influenced by Native American culture and how tribes valued their opponents because without them they would have no one to fight. Crucial to the Bulls being able to defeat the Detroit Pistons was getting his players to respect the "Bad Boys" as worthy opponents who were giving them a gift by forcing them to play their very best to be able to compete.
11) He demonstrates moral courage-standing up publicly for what one believes is right even when it's not popular. When his (and my) alma mater, the University of North Dakota, gave him an honorary doctorate last year, he used the event as a platform to stand up for Native Americans who feel the UND nickname dishonors them. Noting the positive influence Native Americans have had on his spirituality, he said, "We have to rethink our nickname...the Fighting Sioux because it's not a beneficial nickname to these people. It's not beneficial to us." Phil noted that UND would still be powerful whether called the Sioux or the Flickertails. "I propose in this year of change we do the right thing."
12) He supports the PCA Movement. Phil is PCA's National Spokesperson and he donates his time and money to building the PCA Movement. When I am asked, "How much do you pay Phil Jackson to be your spokesperson?" I get the satisfaction of saying, "Nothing! He pays us!"In Houston after a tough game against the Rockets in the Conference semifinals, he finished his press conference and walked out of the room. A reporter said she had one more question to which he replied over his shoulder, "I'm done." She said, "It's about Positive Coaching Alliance." He immediately turned and said, "I'll talk about that any time." (You can see the interview at ) Phil sees the transformation of youth sports as part of his legacy. I hope you will join the PCA Movement and help Phil Jackson and PCA make history by turning youth sports into the very best youth development experience possible.

The biggest story this week involved a national sporting hero going into a nightclub for some drinks and then leaving at closing time. Well, that’s the story if you’ve bothered to check your sources. There was also the matter of beating fierce Asian rivals Japan 2-1, with the aforementioned sporting hero grabbing both goals and looking remarkably spritely for a man who spends his early hours in a nightspot. Former Socceroo Mark Bosnich got involved with the debate and slammed anti-football forces in the Australian media who generated false tabloid headlines about Tim Cahill and branded them “scum”. Elsewhere, FFA chairman Frank Lowy admits Australia faces a “herculean task” to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cup while North Queensland Fury have blasted Felipe's departure from the club as a betrayal.

A GRADE MATCH REPORTS
BLUE LAKE V APOLLO

The match between Blue Lake and Apollo started in near perfect conditions at Malseed Park. Apollo went into the game missing Luke Odgers and the Blues were down Armandi and youngster Beau Branstone. The game started at a good pace with quick passing a feature. Blue Lake had the first partial chance when Strachan was fouled on the edge of the box, but the free kick taken by Ferguson was slammed into the wall, Thomson and Chatindiara wer creating some fine moves but the defence with Byetheway and Johnston were equal to the task. Another bad tackle on Strachan earned a yellow card for Marcus Wallace. Twenty minutes into the game Stewy Wallis was fouled giving Apollo a free just outside their penalty area. Matty Ripper took the free but a well placed Davison in goals saved comfortably. Apollo started to get the upper hand in the midfield and when a chance fell to Hodge he hit a thundering shot which brought out o terrific save by Davison. The young Blues backline of Domaschenz, Reiner, Blair Branstone and McRostie were repelling all attacks and causing the Apollo forwards to shoot from long range. A quick counter attack with Guess passing to Chatindiara would have broken the deadlock but for some great defending by Johnston. Successive shots after good build ups to firstly Hodge and then Wallis threatened to break the Blues defence but both sots went wide. Just before half time Apollo earned a second yellow card, this time to Stenner as tempers started to flare. Apollo almost conceded a goal when a shot was cleared off the last line by the reliable Byetheway. At half time the scores were locked at 0-0.

Blue Lake started the second half with an attacking frame of mind and was unlucky not to go ahead when both Guess an Ferguson had one on ones with Smith in goal, although the first one missed the target the second was brilliantly saved by Smith. Apollo settled, and once more started to have the better of the midfield duel with Stenner, Prentice and Hancock working well. After a good build up Wallis found some space on the right hand side and hit a well placed powerful shot just wide of Davison to the delight of the Apollo crowd. It should have been two nil minutes later when Stenner put the ball over the bar with only Davison to beat after a good solo run. The Blues took advantage of this and were on level terms soon after when they were awarded a penalty after a clumsy challenge by Hancock on Ferguson. Ferguson calmly slotted home. The game fired up again and both teams were working hard to try and gain the points. It was Blue Lake who looked like taking the lead when excellent work allowed Strachan and Guess to have shots with only the keeper to beat but both shot wide, however when a long cross from Guess found Ferguson in the box he made sure with a superb header to give the Blues the lead. Both coaches were making changes as players were tiring and Apollo were throwing everything they had to get an equaliser. It was through Wallis again that they found it when another fine effort this time from the left smashed the ball home. For the last 5 minutes or so it was nail biting stuff as both sides tried to get the winner and although they had chances they had to be content with a draw.
SHARKS V NARACOORTE
The Sharks travelled to Naracoorte for the 1st Round of the Shadows Belgiorno Cup.
Missing players included, Terry Stevenson, Craig Wright, John Stemberger, Damien Stemberger and Pramot Goldsworthy.
The last time these two teams met, the Sharks walked away with a 16-0 win...Sunday was a different story.
The Sharks started the game moving the ball well , using the space and width of the Naracoorte pitch.
Some very early chances went begging, when Brendan Bytheway missed a ‘give me’ inside the 6 yard box, which should have been the start of a scoring onslaught.
More missed chances shortly after with Lennon, Weistra,Marlow looking dangerous , shooting within distance only to find woodwork or the ball blasted over the cross bar.
The scoreline for the first half remained 0-0, as the Sharks could not convert their chances in front of goal.
Good defending from Naracoote which denied Sharks to get on the scoreboard.
The team just didn’t look settled, with quite a few players missing, and many players playing in different position.
At half time , Sharks coach Ian Hill insisted that his players give a bit more, and be more hungry for goal.
He encouraged for the Sharks to play their style of football, and not get trapped into playing ‘desperate’ football with many wasted opportunities.
He asked the players to stick to the game plan, and things would work out eventually.
There mission was to come home with the 3 points.
The second half resumed, and Sharks midfield of Gentile, Lennon and Weistra combined well to work the ball up playing more one touch football, which favoured the Sharks style of play.
Within minutes defender Simon Minter, (who already had played a game ) was substituted for Sharks play maker Lance Da Rocha, who was very eager to turn the game around.
Da Rocha had an immediate impact, as he was awarded a penalty when fouled inside the box.
Sharks sharp shooter Lennon, made no mistake in converting Sharks first goal, and this rejuvenated the team eager to keep the scoreboard ticking.
The next goal came from Richard Marlow, when he was given a through ball from Weistra, displayed some fancy footwork, got past the defender and keeper and calmly slotted the ball cross the goal line. Score 2-0
The Sharks started playing some good football, and was awarded the third goal when Sharks Sweeper Heath Widdison scored from a scramble on the goal line.
Sharks pressured the Naracoorte defence as they could smell blood, when shortly after, Marlow headed home the fourth goal, which secured the win for the Sharks.
The Sharks were down to only 10 men for a short period, when Weistra had permission to leave the field from the referee, complaining of gastric stomach cramps.
Feeling a bit lighter, Weistra joined his team again, and finished the day with a brilliant solo effort scoring the final goal of the game. Final Score 5-0.
Highlights of the match was Brayden Nunan (only 15years old), was awarded best player in his efforts , especially when he looked like scoring his first A Grade goal, when he took a shot at goal only to hit the far post. All his team mates congratulated him on a very good performance, especially being so young, but extremely talented.
Lennon again from 25yds out, almost scored a set shot when he blasted the ball for a certain goal, but only managed to deflect off the cross bar.
Sharks keeper Wil Bytheway, kept a clean sheet thanks to his efforts in goal, and the support from his defenders including his brother Brendan Bytheway.
Brothers Jeremy Nunan and Brayden Nunan also contributed to the team’s win.
With Terry Stevenson and Craig Wright missing from defence, Sharks utility players Josh Thomas and Heath Widdison held very strong to keep Naracoorte from scoring.
PORTLAND V GAMBIER CENTRALS
Portland played Centrals in round 1 of the Shadows / Belgiorno Cup on Sunday at Portland.
The Portland team didnt go into the game with high expectations after last weeks belting by the ladder leaders International. Centrals are the hot favourites to take out Group B in the Cup rounds, being second placed on the premiership ladder.
Portland obviously worked hard on their team play during the week and with no major changes in their line up from their clash with International last week they were able to keep the scoreline to a respectable 6 - 0 loss.
In the second round of the Cup next week, Portland take on Blue Lake at Portland in what promises to be a hard fought game, as both teams work hard to try to record their first win in the cup rounds.

SEWFA Results Round 7

Saturday, 20 June 2009 19:21

Results of Round 7 games for the South East Womens Football Association held on Saturday 20 June 2009.
SEWFA Seniors
Wanderers 2 - 0 Portland
County 0 - 1 Villa
United 0 - 4 Palace
Millicent 0 - 0 City*
Wanderers 2 d Portland 0

Wanderers met Portland at Apollo’s ground of Webb Street last weekend, determined not to let the loss of key players from injury upset their momentum. The depth of their squad was evident with juniors capably stepping into the side. Portland have been a revelation this year, under the guidance of Luke Gerritsen and have a strong defence complemented by a young, fast forward line. With neither side able to capitalise on many opportunities in the first half, it looked to be an exciting finish. Wanderers were able to seal the match with two well crafted goals in the second half, which sees them tighten their hold on 3rd spot on the ladder.

Goals: Wanderers (K Seiler, N Kember)

Palace 4 d United 0

Despite the absence of several quality players last weekend, Palace took to the park full of confidence against a full strength United. Palace juniors helped fill the void with great effect. In an evenly balanced first half, Palace edged in front courtesy of an own goal. United defence were able to absorb the continual pressure and distribute the ball well into attack for themselves but did not trouble the Palace keeper. Whatever Palace coach Inglis said to his team at half time obviously had an impact as they emerged from the changing rooms full of aggression for the ball and primed to attack. Scoring three quick goals soon after the break deflated United, who regrouped and formed attacks of their own but were contained by Palace defence.

Goals: Palace (K Pedlar, T Andrews, J McCormick, TOG)

Villa 1 d County 0

County would have been feeling confident last Saturday when taking to the pitch on their “home” pitch of Casadio Park against Villa. Villa showed self-assurance too, with their Under 14 team comprehensively winning against County’s juniors earlier in the day, with several of these players also taking to the pitch in the senior side. Despite many forays forward, it was to be one of those games when County could just not score. With several opportunities saved and others deflecting off the goals, frustration began to set in with County forwards. Against the run of play, a singular attack on the County goals saw Villa edge in front and that’s the way the score remained under the final whistle, much to the delight of the Villa faithful.

Goals: Villa (J Wood)

City 0 drew with Millicent 0

When these sides met last year, both games resulted in double figure wins for City. Despite recent form, Millicent took to their home park determined to prevent a repeat performance. Once settled, it did not take City long to open the scoring with skilful, strong ball play taking a 4 goal lead to the break. Millicent refused to capitulate and increased their intensity during the game. With underlying friction throughout much of the match, tensions were brought to the fore in the dying minutes of the match when several players were involved in a brief altercation. To halt the exchange, the referee called an early end to the game with no result recorded.

GREAT SPEECH

Hello Guys,

I was recently looking at a website and it had a link to a speech by an ice hockey coach on it. It said quite simply 'this is the best speech you will hear about coaching no matter what sport you coach'. I have to agree with them as this speech is basically my philosophy on youth coaching in a nutshell.

Here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFsF0Z9EKDg

The only part I disagreed with is when he spoke about genetics. In our game you can be any size and be the best but I would love to hear your views info@footballtricks.com
Thanks
