Champions Hoodoo; Competitive Dads; The Futureheads‏

Your Week in Football
We knew it was going to happen at some point. It was more inevitable than Iain Fyfe spooning the ball into Row Z under no pressure, but in the end it only took four rounds. They were a new franchise still gelling but some were starting to believe they actually could do it - North Queensland Fury have managed to earn an A-League point.

Melbourne Victory continued to fall victim to the champions hoodoo, with another defeat, this time to a Perth Glory side looking more accomplished with every game, but saying that it's hardly difficult considering past seasons.

Brisbane continued their annual voyage to mid-table mediocrity before a swift end-of-season finals exit with a "hard-fought" (which means boring with very few goals) 1-0 win over the Mariners.

Yesterday we witnessed the Gold Coast lose an A-League game. In the spirit of getting over-excited by early season results, we've just number crunched and on average the GCU boys lose a quarter or 25% of their games. That's rubbish. However we suspect the defeat was linked with United's Jason Culina fearing another dressing down from Culina senior had he inspired a defeat over his father's team. Witness a reconstruction of the early Culina years here.

In the final A-League game this weekend, Sydney fired themselves to the top of the table with a patient 2-0 win over Wellington Phoenix. Better still, a FourFourTwo employee took to the field before the game as Dunbar Rovers became the new champions of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs Association after a nine goal thriller saw them defeat Waverley Old Boys 6-3 at the SFS. Futureheads look-a-like and FFT sales bod Mike Hemmingway bagged the fifth goal.

Finally, a mention for a new online football quiz that will be running over the next five months through QBE. If you complete all five monthly quizzes you'll go into the draw to win a trip to the A-League Grand Final with all the trimmings. Go here to enter.

SEWFA report‏

City 3 defeated Wanderers 2

Drizzling rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of players and spectators at Blue Lake Sports Park last weekend when City played Wanderers in a hard fought semi final. City claimed an early lead from a penalty kick and continued their pressure on the Wanderers’ goalmouth. Lauren Birch moved up the pitch into an attacking position and combined well with midfield and forwards to create goal scoring opportunities however the City scoreline did not increase due to fine defending and wayward shots. A switch in play found a Wanderers’ striker unmarked and she made no mistake in front of goal equalising the score and rejuvenating her team. Momentum swung in favour of Wanderers and it was only heroic goal keeping from Lauren Lowe which kept the score as a draw at the half time whistle. Tracey Kourmouzis returned to the park determined to regain the advantage for City and with some hard running was able to cross the ball to the penalty spot where Jen Smith made no mistake. Steph Pahl and Kendall Saffin took control of the midfield for Wanderers and looked for the diagonal passes which proved difficult for the City defence. Again Wanderers were able to equalise before the full time whistle, forcing the match to extra time. Nicola Harradine and Kyra Sykes were defiant in the backline for Wanderers, refusing to capitulate to the highly regarded City attack. With only minutes remaining before penalties, City were able to pounce on a deflected save giving them the lead once again. The final whistle saw a relieved City claim their position in the Grand Final in what will be a rematch of the 2007 decider.

Goal scorers: City 3 (J Smith 2, L Birch)
Wanderers 2 (K Seiler, N Kember)

Under 14s
Villa 4 defeated City 1

Out of the blocks early, City took the lead thanks to a fine strike from Jess Stephenson. From then on, it was tempo plus with Villa striving to make up lost ground. City’s Emily Birch has improved markedly this year and was strong in the backline, confidently releasing the ball wide for midfielders. Meg Walters worked hard to increase the lead for City but Villa’s defence proved too solid. Monique Ianella was able to even the score with a nicely placed shot from a strong left foot. Early in the second half, Isabelle Slattery was able to pinpoint the central striker with a cross and Villa took the lead for the first time of the match. Janaye Donaldson’s work ethic was to be commended putting City under pressure and often winning the ball for Villa. It was to be Villa’s day with their confidence in front of goal playing an important part in their victory.

Goal scorers: City 1 (J Stephenson)
Villa 4 (M Ianella 2, M Atwell 2)

For the first time in SEWFA’s history, 4 different teams will be contesting in Grand Finals matches. Villa and Wanderers will meet in the Under 14 match, whilst City will play Palace in the senior game to be held on 12th September.

The Junior Development Squad girls played their final game for 2009 in cold, wet conditions but this did not lessen their enthusiasm on the pitch. Despite no more game play, these girls will play in important part on Grand Final day, escorting senior players onto the pitch.

There will be no matches played at Blue Lake Sports Park this weekend as girls will hit the road to play in the State Junior Country Championships to be held in Port Lincoln. Many SEWFA players will be involved in the Western Border Soccer Association Under 13 and Under 16 girls teams, which these teams under the guidance of Stuart Birch and Warren McCallum.

Play will resume at Blue Lake Sports Park on the 12th September when the season will conclude with three high quality matches.

International and Apollo to meet in Top 4 Final

Tom Weedon scored for Apollo in the under 14 semi final this week.

The WBSA Dycer Constructions Top 4 matches were played on soft pitches at Casadio Park and Malseed Park on Sunday 30 August 2009.

In A Grade, International and Apollo will continue their season rivalry and meet in the Top 4 Final, on Sunday 13 September 2009, after both teams were convincing winners in their respective semi finals.
Inter have kept their hopes of claiming all three titles this year with a two nil win over Blue Lake in the semi final of the Dycer Constructions top four competition played on Sunday.
Inter started with the wind but were minus Robbie Manfrin, Christian Cella and Adam Osman. Blue Lake were at full strength and saw this as a perfect opportunity to beat Inter. Blue Lake had Inter on the back foot early and the pace of Mitchell Thomson and Tristan Guess were worrying the backline. Callum Ferguson put a good ball through to Thomson who passed on to Guess but Brett Reid in the Inter goal was out very quickly to clean up. As anticipated the midfield battle was intense and with both sides playing an attacking style it was a joy to watch. Dave Galloway was playing his usual controlling style for Inter but the pressure exerted was making it hard for both sides to take control. Ferguson was almost through when a nice pass from Guess was cleared by the reliable Chris Williams. The ball was moving from end to end and it wasn’t long before Inter looked like scoring when Marcus Morony broke through but Andy Armandi was alert to the danger kept the game goalless with a brave dive at Morony’s feet. Inter had a couple of chances in quick succession but again Armandi came to the rescue with good diving saves. Blue Lake looked like taking the lead when a good shot from Ferguson was parried by Reid to Justin McRostie but it came too quick to him and it deflected inches wide of the post. Guess was next with a half chance but after a good build up his shot went wide. It was Inters turn to nearly break through when firstly a shot after a brilliant dummy by Galloway was well blocked by Blair Branstone and then a long cross found Dante Bonner in the clear but he uncharacteristically shot wide. The deadlock was finally broken when a long ball by Andrew Ielasi caught the wind and looped over Armandi.
Blue Lake started the second half more positively and was threatening to equalise and almost did when Ferguson hit a shot on the turn which was well saved by Reid. Inter almost doubled their lead when Joel Redfern got on to the end of a good cross only to see the ball loop over the cross bar. The turning point was when Morony received a yellow card for an altercation with Bryce Strachan and then after an abusive outburst was red carded leaving Inter to fight out the game with ten men. Blue Lake were getting more of the ball now but were still unable to use the extra man to get the much needed goal. They came close when a shot from Walter Chatindiara was tipped over by Reid. Inter were still creating attacking moves and were unlucky not to go two ahead when a shot by Adam Craig hit the bar and the fortunately hit Armandi on the chest from the rebound. Inter were lucky not to get a second red card when a long ball to Thomson on the wing caused Reid to come running out of his box and clean him up but he only received a yellow card. Inter put the match beyond doubt when a powerful low free kick by Galloway couldn’t be held by Armandi and Redfern was the first to react and tapped the ball in to give them a two nil lead and ultimately the game.

WHO TOOK OUT THE VPL DIVISION 2 PREMIERSHIP AND AS A RESULT PROMOTION TO DIVISION 1 FOR 2010.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!!! OF DIVSION 2.
North Geelong Warriors (5) vs Brunswick City (0)

A nervous tension filled afternoon capped off with a title, well it couldn’t get any better, but it did.

In reserves action the boys went down in a 1 - 6 loss. Although not a result to hang your head on it was a game to watch as the Warriors lined up with the youngest reserves team all year, the squad contained youngsters from North Geelong’s Under 15A squad who will no doubt be looking forward to North Geelong having an Under 21 team next season in Division 1 as this served as a indication for them to see what it meant to play at that level.

In seniors action the Warriors began their match with nervous apprehension. Although they were dominating the Warriors shots and chances were sailing high and wide. Then mid way through the first half Matthew Demo got the better of his marker and rounded the keeper to slot in the first one of the afternoon. The immediate result was the lifting of the nerves, you could now sense the Warriors were out to play. A short while later crowd favourite Robert Zadworny latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the box to beat the defence and the keeper and it was 2 - 0. As half time loomed the crowd were is disbelief almost as if they couldn’t believe that if the day’s results went the right way the Warriors were actually looking at promotion. Phone calls from fans to Ballarat were being made to see how Thomastown and Ballarat were going. At half time the news filtered out that Ballarat was up 1-0.

The second half saw a relaxed Warriors side compile some slick moves and slowly and comfortably piled on another three goals courtesy of Cervinski, Demo and capped off with clinical finish from Kuna. Just before full time the heavens opened up as if to say to it’s time. Final result from Ballarat came in and it was Ballarat who prevailed over Thomastown which meant North Geelong Warriors are effectively champions for 2009. Scenes of jubilation and merriment began to unfold with players and supporters forming a huge circle on the pitch to sing the club song followed by a avalanche of supporters joining the team in the dressing rooms for a rendition of the club song which would have rocked the foundations.

It’s been a tough slog with many twists and turns through the year. With losing players for lengthy patches through the year the squad held firm and showed true grit to three times this season notch up patches of 3 or 4 wins on the trot to put distance between themselves and the other title chasers. The Warriors remained confident and backed themselves to achieve the ultimate prize for the year, the Division 2 title. North Geelong Warriors will be playing in Division 1 in 2010 and we look forward to seeing the run out in the state’s second highest league.

Next Saturday 5th of September the Warriors final game for 2009 is away to Altona East. Come along to support like you have all year and let’s end on a big high. Afterwards we’re heading to our major sponsor The Dom - Australian Croatian Association, Separation St Bell Park to celebrate the end of a rewarding season, so if you’re around pop in and join in the festivities.

In further good news our Under 15A boys beat Green Gully 1 - 0 to put themselves into Superleague for Under16s in 2010. Congratulations boys we can’t wait to see you playing at the highest level it is a reward to you, your coach Tam and Manager Sime as well your families for their dedication to your success. The Young Warriors will be at home on Father’s Day, 6th of September where the club will be having it’s monthly lunch, so come along and enjoy a great day out for Father’s Day as well as capping off the boys season with a win.

Our Juniors have done extremely well this year, including the Under 11 team who are running in second and take on ladder leader Altona City next week, a win will see them take second position as Altona have a superior goal difference. Our other junior squads in the GRFA competitions have all had great years and we’re proud of them and their coaches for putting in and getting the results.

To all the Father’s out there, have a happy Father’s Day this coming weekend, wishing you all good times and good health.

PRESENTAION NIGHT for UNDER 15A, Women, Reserves and Seniors on SATURDAY 19th SEPTEMBER from 7pm at North Geelong Soccer Club.

Thank you, From the North Geelong Soccer Club.

Which Top 4 semi final will you see?

Lew has mentioned Ryan Tobin as a potential starter for Centrals this week against Apollo.

Well the Premiership is done and dusted and we now move on to the next piece of silverware, the Dycer Constructions Top Four competition.

The two Top 4 semi finals will match International against Blue Lake and Apollo against Centrals.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

International v Blue Lake

Malseed Park (home of Blue Lake Soccer Club) at 2:30 pm

The first semi pits Premiers Inter against fourth placed Blue Lake in what promises to be an interesting game. As Premiers, Inter will deservedly go into this match as the hot favourites. Coach Tony D'Agostino has no injury concerns, he said that Robbie Manfrin will be back from injury and Adam Osman is also back after a weeks holiday.

The only concern that D'Agostino has is the fact that Inter have both senior grades and the under 17s involved in the semi finals. The under 17s and A Grade are at Malseed Park while the B Grade will be at Casadio Park. I am sure that this will not hamper them too much with the depth that they have.

D'Agostino believes that Blue Lake is the most improved side this year and both times that they have met has resulted in close games. He says that the young Blues have a fairly balanced side and expects a terrific contest.

Blue Lake coach Sam Ferguson has been around long enough to know the strengths of the International soccer club and understands that he will have to pull something out of the bag to upset them. He also will have a full squad to pick from although he also has the problems with all three grades playing on Sunday.

Blue Lake, if they can take their chances early could unsettle Inter but they have struggled all year to score consistently and with Inter having so many options in front of goals it is hard to go against them.

The midfield battle will be a ripper with Ferguson, Strachan and McRostie up against Bonner, Galloway and Redfern. Both have good defences and I expect this to go right down to the wire and do not be surprised if it goes to a penalty shootout.

Lew's prediction: Lew is sitting on the fence

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apollo v Centrals

Casadio Park (home of International Soccer Club) at 2:30 pm

The second semi final is between Apollo and Centrals. This game will be another fantastic spectacle. This will be Centrals only chance of a trophy after being knocked out of the cup, so expect them to throw everything at this. They have struggled this year but would see this as their chance to redeem themselves.

This is the fourth consecutive year the two clubs have played off in this fixture with Centrals winning 2006 and going on to win the title. Apollo bounced back in 2007 and then last season it was Centrals winning in a marathon 14-13 on penalties.

Centrals beat Apollo in both premiership clashes this season, however Apollo defeated Centrals in their Shadows Belgiorno Cup qualification match. Centrals have the edge 5-2 over the last two years but all matches have been extremely close.

Centrals rebounded from their loss to Blue Lake with a convincing three goal win over the much improved Millicent last week, while Apollo easily accounted for the Sharks at home.

Centrals could see the return of Adrian Hurst and Ryan Tobin for this week's match after both have not played for three weeks. This week Centrals coach Shane Dycer will have the most players available since he has been back in the hot seat at Bishop Road.

Apollo's squad is a deep one with Ash Stenner a possible inclusion if he travels down from Kingston.

Key Match Ups which will decide this final will be Shane Heemskerk v Adam Hodge, Matt Gordon v Paul Prentis and Nathan Tidy v Luke Odgers.

Lew's prediction: Lew is sitting on the fence

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you want to see some exciting competitive soccer this week your only problem will be deciding which match to see, but I have a feeling that whichever one you go to see you will not walk away disappointed.

Inter achieve 6 consecutive premerships

International Soccer Club continued their domination of WBSA soccer, winning their sixth consecutive premership, and ninth in the last ten years.

With two rounds to go, Inter took a 5-point lead in the Premership race, however their Premership win was not confirmed until they drew with Apollo last weekend. International Soccer Club confirmed themselves as one the most prominent teams in the last decade, in all sports throughout the South East.

In last weekend's game against Portland, coach Tony D'Agostino took the opportunity to reward some B Grade players with a start in A Grade. He also took the opportunity to rest some players while, with the A Grade players who took the field, they were given a pre-game brief to enjoy their last Premership game of the year.

Portland put on a good display, coming off their best result of the season in the previous round when they played out a 3 - 3 draw with Sharks, and showed that when they can get a full team on the park they can compete, giving them some confidence for the future years.

The game was played in between the midfields, and it wasn't until the talented Inter captain Dante Bonner showed the forwards how it is done, when he opened the scoring giving his team a well deserved lead.

Bonner then doubled the lead when he cracked a volley past the gallant Portland keeper, and with this goal secured the victory for his team.

Playing in his first A Grade game, Inter introduced another promising junior in the Under 17 rising star Matthew Dohnt. He didn't look out of place, playing in several different roles and dominating in all of them. He provided speed and accurate crosses for his more experienced players.

The powerful Inter team began to put on a passing display, but were thwarted by the brilliant Portland goalkeeper who was best player for his team, when time after time he saved many certain goals.

Chris Williams proved that he is not just a defender when he went forward, and from a free kick, he rose high above all other players and powerfully headed the ball into the goals.

At half time, youngster Sam Bueti was given his second A Grade start in as many weeks, and with Inter now displaying more leg speed from their youngsters, the Portland team could not prevent the opposition running past them.

Christian Cella scored what would have to go down as the goal of the season, when again from a free kick from just in from the centre line and 45 metres from goal, hit the most outstanding free kick that had wicked curve on it. The ball went past the Portland keeper, who could do nothing to prevent this fantastic strike going over his head and into the net.

Veterans Vince Versace and Joe D'Agostino were given the final 25 minutes in the A Grade, winding back the clock several years from the last time they played in this grade. Vince Versace showed he can still match it, with some precision passes that set up numerous opportunities. Joe D'Agostino also showed that he can beat players much younger than him, when he got the ball into the back of the net, only to be disallowed for offside.

Portland did get a consolation goal, with the crowd witnessing another spectacular free kick. Against the strong wind the Portland player powerfully smashed the ball past the Inter wall and goalkeeper and into the top corner of the goal.

Inter ended the scoring when Marcus Morony converted from the penalty spot, to be rewarded for some unselfish play for most of the game.

The end of the game started some huge celebrations that have been continuing in and around Mount Gambier for the past two days.

A Grade match report.
This match started with Blue Lake having the advantage of a very strong wind and they made the perfect start when Mitchell Thomson was put through by Walter Chatindiara and he made no mistake with only one minute of the game gone. Naracoorte was trying to get back immediately and had a half chance to Darren Awege but his shot was well blocked by Blair Branstone. Masters also had a chance which Bryce Strachan cleared. Blue Lake almost made it two when a Thomson cross found Tristan Guess who headed just wide. The Blues were well in control at this stage and with Callum Ferguson, Justin McRostie and Bryce Strachan doing as they pleased in the midfield it was up to John Thurlow and Steve Mathie to try to keep the scoring down. They couldn’t do anything about the second goal when Ferguson scored directly from a corner with clever use of the wind. There was a scare at the other end when Masters got through and hit a powerful shot which was well saved by Andy Armandi in the Blues goal. The Blues went into the half time break 2-0 up after having the bulk of the play and Naracoorte would have been very happy with their defensive play against the wind.
The second half followed the same pattern as the first with Blue Lake dominating across the ground and Naracoorte defending bravely, even with the aid of the strong breeze Naracoorte was unable to penetrate the Blues midfield and when they did the couldn’t get through the young Blues defence. It was just a matter of when the Blues would increase their lead, but as has been the trouble all year they could not find the back of the net. Three good chances in a row were not taken with Strachan, Ferguson and Guess all coming very close. Eventually they did score when a great ball put through from Ferguson found Thomson who scored his second. Blues coach Sam Ferguson made changes to the line up giving his substitutes a run and Michael Davison came on in his 250th A grade game for the club. Davison then started the move which ended up with Guess getting the Blues fourth goal.
The game finished at 4-0 and is the end of the season for Naracoorte while Blue Lake must now prepare for its semi final game next week against Premiers Inter.

City 5 defeated Portland 0
It was excitement plus at Blue Lake Sports Park last weekend in the first of the finals matches. Even the Panther made the trip from Portland to cheer on the black and whites in their first ever finals match against City. With the wind definitely favouring City in the first half, Portland defenders had to work hard in the swirling conditions. Sweeper Donna Kilgour covered ground well and continually pressured City forwards. Despite several shots on goal from long range, the score remained 0-0 at half time. Coach Birch implored his team to lift their workrate in the second half and the City girls responded, with Sarah Ielasi winning the ball in the backline and making penetrating runs down the wing to push the ball into goalscoring positions. Eboney Gilbert showed composure under pressure and was able to distribute the ball to forwards who started to find the target after the break. As the City scoreline increased, so did their confidence and it was a disciplined side that took control of the match in the last 20 minutes. Alannah Daniel caused the City defence some headaches but could not find the back of the net. The final whistle was met with relief and jubilation from the City girls but sent Portland on the long drive home to plan season 2010.
Goal scorers: City (J Smith 2, T Kourmouzis 2, K Gilbert)
Palace 4 defeated Wanderers 1
Wanderers gave Palace no time to settle into their control/pass/move game plan, pressuring every pass and player and forcing vital turnovers in the opening stanza of the qualifying final. Eventually Palace found a gap in the first half and Jenna McCormick made no mistake in front of goal. Wanderers increased their own intensity with Keisha Seiler working tirelessly for the match showing enormous desire to win the ball. This urgency was rewarded when a Palace goal kick fell at the feet of Nikita Kember who lofted a long shot straight back towards the goal with the ball just dipping under the bar to equalise the score. Eme Ripper demonstrated control and vision for Wanderers, clearing the ball well to her teammates. However, Palace class kicked in and they were able to regain the lead just before the half time break. With injury forcing lineup changes for Wanderers, Palace cemented their grip on the game scoring twice more before match end, claiming a win which will take them into their third grand final in as many years.
Goal scorers: Palace 4 (K Pedlar 2, J McCormick, G Tentye)
Wanderers (N Kember)
City 1 defeated Palace 0
Very little has separated these sides all season and the elimination final held at noon was no different. Early hard tackles and determined running set the standard for the game with both sides fighting for possession. Breanna Roberts has worked hard this season for City and brought her strong work ethic into the game. Palace showed style on the ball and looked for direct passes as they progressed down the park, however excellent City defending denied Palace goals time and time again. Jess Mott was able to read the ball well and cross to the penalty spot but it was cleared comfortably away from danger. Imogen Pratt played more of a defensive role for Palace than she is accustomed to and combined well with midfielders to launch attacks. With the game looking like it was headed towards penalties, Jess Stephenson was able to break free from her opponent and with just the keeper to beat was able to slot the ball home to claim victory and a berth in the preliminary final this week.
Goal scorer: City (J Stephenson)
Wanderers 6 defeated Villa 4
Despite playing short of players for most of the season, Villa have been the dominant force in the Under 14 league and on Saturday set out to display why they finished on top of the ladder. The combination of Rachael Bennett in the backline and Mikayla Atwell in attack proved a handful for Wanderers initially forcing excellent saves from Emily Aston in goals. However a strong run forward followed by pinpoint accuracy edged Villa in front in the first half. The tide then turned in Wanderers favour with the majority of play in their attacking half. Monique Sims was able to control a wayward clearance, just touching the ball in front and finishing with style to equalise the score before half time. The rest of the game see-sawed between the goals but with neither side able to capitalise on goal scoring opportunities the result had to be decided by penalties.
With tensions rising, players stepped up to the spot to take their kick. The depth in the Wanderers’ side proved too strong for Villa and their winning penalty saw them straight into the grand final on 12th September.
Goal scorers: Villa (M Atwell) - Penalties M Ianella, M Atwell, K Reade
Wanderers (M Sims) – Penalties P Ackland, M Sims, H Philp, K Lehmann, J White
The Junior Development Squad had their penultimate match in windy conditions. These juniors have gained the hearts of spectators and the interest of under 14 coaches looking for upcoming players to join their squads. Skills learned from match play and training drills are being demonstrated during matches with increasing regularity, with communication and passing being key areas that the girls have worked on. With their last game this weekend before their inclusion in grand final proceedings, the girls are already looking forward to next season.
Besides the Junior Development Squad game, there will just be the two preliminary finals played this Saturday. The Under 14 match between Villa and City will take place at noon and will be followed by City v Wanderers at 1.30pm with the winner gaining the remaining spot in the grand final to be played on 12th September.

Lew's predictions for last round of WBSA Premership

Matthew Weistra will play his final game for the season on Sunday as the Sharks take on Apollo.

The final round of the Dycer Constructions Western Border soccer is upon us and unfortunately there is not a huge amount of changes that will be of interest.

The Premiership has already been won by International and, unless there is a huge upset, all positions will stay the same with Apollo, Centrals and Blue Lake filling the top four behind International.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gambier Centrals v Millicent United

The match of the round will be Centrals against Millicent at Centrals.

Centrals will be fired up to get some form on the board leading into the top four. Although they have had a horror year with injury I am sure that they will still be disappointed to finish third.

Millicent on the other hand have had quite a good year. They will almost certainly finish fifth in the Premership, unless there is a major upset in the Blue Lake v Naracoorte game at Malseed Park. Millicent drew against Centrals last time they played and will be keen to get some kind of psychological advantage before the Shadows/Belgiorno Cup semi finals.

Millicent will rely on Matthew Gregetic, Cam Saint and Brett Dibley while Centrals will look to Jesse Wenham, Toby Kennett and the reliable Brodie Koop.

I am tipping Centrals to get back in the winners circle.

Lew's prediction: Gambier Centrals 3 - 1 Millicent United

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blue Lake v Naracoorte United

Blue Lake take on Naracoorte at Malseed Park. Blue Lake will be full of confidence after beating Centrals last week and should have Mitchell Thomson and Kyle Reiner available for selection.

This will be Naracoorte's last outing for the year and I am sure that they will want to give a good account of themselves, but I cannot see them being able to match the much improved Blue Lake side. Naracoorte will be relying too much on too few.

The Blues have a great deal of belief in their ability at the moment but, unless they keep working hard, they too may become unstuck. I'm sure that coach Sam Ferguson will be trying to fine tune this unit knowing that they will be up against Inter in the semi finals of both the Cup and the top four.

Blue Lake to win.

Lew's prediction: Blue Lake 6 - 0 Naracoorte United

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

International v Portland

My congratulations go to Tony D'Agostino and his team on winning the 2009 Premiership. With the Premiership on the Inter trophy shelf I am sure that D'Agostino will be already thinking about the Cup and top four competitions.

Regardless of whether he plays his full strength team or whether he rests some players to give some youngsters a run they will be way too strong for the battling Portland side. Inter has class all over the Park and will score goals at will.

Portland got their first points last week with a draw against the Sharks but I am sure that they will be disappointed with the fact that they only had one draw for the season. They have some good players but availability and commitment has hampered them all year.

Inter to win.

Lew's prediction: International 7 - 0 Portland

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apollo v Gambier City Sharks

Apollo are at home to a Sharks side that have had a season they would rather forget.

Apollo will win this game comfortably to finish runners up to Inter. They will be without Ash Stenner due to suspension but this will make no difference to the score. They will be too strong and like some other clubs will be trying to get some form ready to fight out the top four and cup games.

Sharks have really struggled after a reasonable start to the year but the commitment of some of their players have seen them with a lack of numbers both at training and also on Sundays, they will be glad that this is the end of 2009.

Apollo to win.

Lew's prediction: Apollo 6 - 0 Gambier City Sharks

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Ipswich keeper Supple quits game

The form of Richard Wright has restricted Supple's first-team chances
Highly rated Ipswich goalkeeper Shane Supple has decided to walk away from football at the age of 22 having "fallen out of love with the game".

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 star came through the club's academy and made 38 first team appearances.

"Playing professional football is not something I want to continue doing," Supple told the club's website.

"As you grow up you realise there are other things in life and to be honest, the game is not what I thought it was."

Supple played a key role in Ipswich's FA Youth Cup triumph in 2005, when Town beat a Southampton side that included Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale, and saved a penalty in his last appearance, a shoot-out victory over Shrewsbury in the Carling Cup last week.

His first-team opportunities have been limited since Richard Wright returned to Portman Road from West Ham in July 2008.

Ipswich have agreed to cancel the Dubliner's contract at his request, and it will allow him to pursue a career outside of professional football immediately.

Supple plans to return to Ireland to spend time with his family and consider his options which, he insists, "won't be in football".

"There is not one reason why I have made my decision, there are a number of factors," said Supple.

"But deep down my heart is not in the game any more and I'm not going to go into work every day trying to convince myself that it is, so it's the right time for me to walk away.

"I suppose you could say that I have fallen out of love with the game and when that happens I've always said to myself that I wouldn't hang around."

Supple, who had brief loan spells at Falkirk and Oldham, was quick to praise Ipswich manager Roy Keane for the way the former Manchester United midfielder responded to the news.

"I want to thank the manager for the support he has given me," added Supple. "He was a bit shocked when I told him and I expected that but he understood my reasons - he's been first class.

"People probably think I'm crazy but I'm not going to stay in the game for anyone else, I'm making this decision for myself.

"I've worked with some great people in my time at Ipswich and had some great times at the club. It's a fantastic club and I'll continue to follow Ipswich's fortunes."

Ipswich chief executive Simon Clegg praised Supple for his commitment to the club, both on and off the pitch, over the past six years.

"It's obviously disappointing news for us but we respect Shane's reasons for wanting a career chance and we wish him every success for the future," stated Clegg

Palace and Wanderers highlight first week of SEWFA finals

The last round of SEWFA games for 2009 were played in fine, sunny weather at the Blue Lake Sports Park last weekend. Four Senior teams and one under 14 side knew it was going to be their last game for the season as the finalists were already decided.

The fact that they didn't make the finals did not deter County, who provided the excitement for the day when they beat Villa in one of their better performances of the year.

Next week's games sees the first week of the SEWFA finals series.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seniors - Minor Semi Final - City v Portland

At 1:30 pm the senior elimination final will be played between the experienced City side and the relative newcomers Portland. City are seasoned campaigners in finals rounds and have shown all year they are a force to be reckoned with. Portland, in only their 2nd year in the competition, have been the huge improvers in the league and have worked hard to retain their top 4 position.

With only the winner of this match continuing in the finals race, nothing will be held in reserve during this game. Portland's defence have been very solid all year and will have their work cut out this weekend against City's strike force, however it could be a quick break from a Portland youngster which will have City on the back foot early.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seniors - Major Semi Final - Palace v Wanderers

At 3:00 pm, the qualifying final between Palace and Wanderers will take place. The winner of this match progresses directly to the grand final, whilst the loser gets a second bite of the cherry when they take on the winner of the elimination final next weekend.

Back to back premiers Palace have held on to top spot for most of the year and enter the race as odds on favourite to take the treble, however player availability has been a sore spot for them this year, seeing them consistently take to the pitch with a side filled with juniors. These juniors have performed admirably but the toughness of finals matches could be difficult for them.

Wanderers have presented a fairly balanced side each week, with their young team improving rapidly and playing well as a team. Palace have come away with the points both times they have met this season, but Wanderers have hit their straps at the right end of the season and could surprise a few people.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Under 14 - Semi Finals

In the Under 14 matches played at 12 noon, City will play Palace in the elimination final. All games played between these two have been close affairs however Palace have a slight edge, claiming victory twice. The improvement of key players throughout the year could be the deciding factor, with each team well balance from defence through to the forward line.

The qualifying match for the Under 14s will be played out between Villa and Wanderers. Villa will enter as undisputed favourites but Wanderers have grown in strength and size during the year and will give them a run for their money. Wanderers recruited well in the pre-season and this is reaping benefits for them on the park.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Junior Development squad has finished until next season, however they will be all over the park in the coming weeks watching older sisters and brothers play in the various final series.

Being 17 Again! School Bullies! F3 Tumbleweeds!‏

Your Week in Football
Round Two of the A-League was more exciting than winning $200,000 on a scratch card in Melbourne.

Gold Coast continued to look like a load of "bigger boys" taking on the year below them at school. While Robbie Fowler doesn't strike us as someone looking to end their career having his ears flicked and lunch money taken by the A-League's mere morals. During his post match interview "God" looked more depressed than a Socceroos captain at his local Centrelink. Fowler probably thinks it would be easier teaching maths to Baldrick than winning games at the Fury.

The other games didn't disappoint either, with another 17 goals scored in total this round, including six of the best in quite possibly the greatest A-League game ever. Unsurprisingly Sydney versus Adelaide was the "Pim Verbeek tactical appreciation edition" of Round Two, while Wellington versus Perth was the "Brett Holman inability to score appreciation edition" as chance after chance went begging in a rain-soaked NZ. Oh yeah and Mariners v Jets played too. Apparently.

More exciting than an F3 derby is the return of the EPL, where Liverpool's title challenge ended before it started, Tim Cahill was made to feel the Robbie Fowler of the Premiership, while in mainland Europe that Politix model we had in the July issue of the mag scored twice.

A Grade match report.
Centrals went into this match with a much stronger line up than the cup round when they drew 0-0 with Blue Lake. Blue Lake was missing Kyle Reiner and Mitchell Thomson. In very difficult conditions the game started well with both sides playing nice soccer on a very slippery pitch. It was Blue Lake who had the first chance when Callum Ferguson whipped a 22m free kick just over the bar. The game turned Centrals way at the eighth minute when Blair Branstone knocked Jose Estevez over in the box to concede a penalty. Jesse Wenham stepped up and calmly slotted the ball home. Matty Gordon Brian Lindsay and Estevez were combining well in the middle and were having a great tussle with Ferguson, Bryce Strachan and Justin McRostie. Blue Lake had two chances when one on ones with Koop in goals for Centrals, but they went begging. The conditions went from bad to worse with strong winds and hail causing tackles to be miss timed and it was one of these that saw Ferguson make no mistake when he slammed home a free kick from 20 yards past the diving Koop.
The Centrals forwards Nathan Tidy and Toby Kennett were working hard but were well held by Miro Vujica and Branstone.
Centrals had the wind in the second half but it was Blue Lake who came out the strongest but good defensive work by Heemskerk, Wenham and Peter Robbins were repelling the fast running forwards. Blue Lake could have gone two on up when Ferguson had another free kick 20m out and hit it into the top corner only to see a magnificent save by Koop to keep them level. Youngster Jacob Phillips came on for Blue Lake and with his first touch he crossed over to Ferguson who headed home to the delight of the home crowd. Centrals tried to lift themselves and made some good moves forward and nearly scored when a low cross was well met by Gordon but was blocked by McRostie. Tidy had another good chance but his shot was hit well wide of the mark. Blue Lake sealed the win with ten minutes to go when great build up work from Vujica and Walter Chatindiara saw Guess in the clear and although Koop parried the first shot Guess followed it up and slammed home in his 100th game for Blue Lake. Centrals almost got a consolation goal when a Centrals free kick looked like penetrating when Branstone chested the ball into the arms of Andy Armandi diving to his right.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Craig Levein says he had to overhaul Dundee United's youth system just to teach players basic skills.

Academy director Graeme Liveston has left the club with Brian Grant and Ian Cathro announced as senior and junior academy managers respectively.

"Twenty five years ago, there wasn't the same need to work on basic skills, as kids practiced all the time.

"Coaching emphasis therefore was quite rightly on team shape, tactics, set plays and so on," said manager Levein.

Levein has spent two years studying the Tannadice club's youth set-up in his capacity as director of football.

"I decided I had to scrap the entire existing structure," said Levein.

"We need to educate kids, rather than dictate to them, and focus on replacing all the hours of practice lost to a generation of young footballers.

"This isn't a criticism of what's gone before, it's simply a recognition that football - and society in general - has changed dramatically in the last quarter of a century and that we need to change with it.

"Nowadays, kids have so many distractions that they are rarely seen practicing with a ball in their spare time - if they have any - and we therefore need to compensate for this by teaching and encouraging basic skills only, particularly in the younger age groups.

"We need to ensure that young players coming through the system are equipped with all the tools and skills to become a good professional footballer in the modern era."

Former Aberdeen, Hibernian and Dundee midfielder Grant will oversee the development of players aged 15 and above to professional youth level.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old Cathro's remit will be to implement a new coaching set-up for the age groups of under 11 to under 15. Both will report to youth director Stevie Campbell.

There will also be a network of coaches and scouts operating out of centres in Dundee and Stirling with director John Bennett overseeing the funding of the project.
