The WBSA Summer Development Program commenced this week with players from all WBSA clubs urged to participate in the u10, u12, u14, u16 and u19 boys squad as well as a junior development squad for girls. All cohorts had strong representation with over 80 players attending in the first week. Our Club achieved another milestone over the weekend as the National Youth League side made their bow against Melbourne Victory in Northcote.
In a match which reaffirmed our commitment to youth and the philosophy that guided the selection of John Aloisi’s team, the boys in Red and White recorded a stellar 2-0 win, proving the future is bright for Melbourne Heart FC.
With the support of Park Trent, the NYL side represents the future of our Club, with each player on display selected for their ability to one day make the leap to the Hyundai A-League.
And with players hailing from areas such as Albury, Ballarat and the Surf Coast, the team provides an accurate representation of the calibre of talent present in regional areas.

Member Update

While we may have surpassed last year’s membership total of 5,300, with a target of 7,500, we encourage everyone who hasn’t signed up this year to join the Heart family and make the season one of Red, White and You.

Van 't Schip Hails Colosimo Impact

Head Coach John van ‘t Schip has hailed the impact of Simon Colosimo after the former Socceroo returned to action with a strong performance in the Melbourne Derby over the weekend.
After missing the opening fortnight of the season with a calf strain, the 32-year-old produced a sterling display alongside teenager Curtis Good to keep the Victory front line at bay.

Head Coach John van ‘t Schip remains upbeat despite Melbourne Heart FC’s frustrating 0-0 draw against Melbourne Victory in the Derby at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Despite dominating the contest, Heart was unable to secure a breakthrough, squandering a number of golden opportunities to find the back of the net and record the Club’s opening win of the Hyundai A-League season.

The Western Border Soccer Association is pleased to announce that its Summer Development and Condition Program will commence next week. The program has been running for several years under the guidance of Cameron Craig and this year will coordinated by Scott Dickson.

CEO of the WBSA, Mr Andy Shoemark highlighted the good work the Craig has produced while in the role. “Cameron has done a good job over the past few years in providing opportunities for interested players to develop their skills and to access the FFSA Pathways. This year we hope to build on Cameron’s good work by adding an under 19 development squad and increase the opportunities for players to develop in game situations.”

“Scott returns to the role that he held several years ago and we are delighted that we have been able to secure his services. He has a proven track record in achieving good outcomes and is keen to further develop the existing program” Shoemark added. Dickson will be joined by David Cole a member of Apollo’s successful 2010 championship winning side and a WBSA Team of the year member for the past two seasons.

The WBSA Summer Development Program will commence next Tuesday at Tension Woods College with programs being offered for both girls and boys in the under 10, under 12 and under 14 age groups and on Thursday in the under 14, under 16 and under 19 cohorts. FMA International Player of the Year award‏

Brett Holman was tonight named International Player of the Year by Australia's Football Media Association (FMA) at the annual Black Tie Australian Football Awards held in Sydney.

"Brett Holman was the run away favourite of members of the FMA for this year's award," said FMA President, Steve Dettre of Infostrada Sports, in presenting the award.

The other nominees were Mile Jedinak, Matt McKay, Carl Valeri and Luke Wilkshire.

"Brett showed his value as an international player at last year’s World Cup –responding to some of his critics in the best way possible - by ‘doing the business’ on the pitch," said Dettre.

"His form continued throughout 2010-11 starting with the first game in the voting year when the Socceroos met Slovenia in Ljubljana last August."

The FMA's citation notes that, in the 15 games played in the 2010-11 voting period, Holman played in all but one (v Paraguay in Sydney, October 2010), creating numerous chances and scoring two goals. He is the only Socceroo to have played in the 11 matches of 2011 (up to the match v Serbia in Melbourne in June), demonstrating both his importance and worth to the team.

Holman’s good form for the green and gold has also carried through to his Eredivisie club side, AZ Alkmaar, including in the current Champions League campaign, where he is a fixture under Dick Advocaat.

"The view of FMA members is that, in 2010-11, Holman has been instrumental in bringing a more fluent style of play to the national team and Australia looks more threatening in attack when he is in full flight," Dettre said.

Previous winners of the FMA International Player of the Year Award are Mark Schwarzer (2009) and Tim Cahill (2010).

The FMA award for International Player of the Year is presented along with Football Federation Australia's community and elite player awards and the Professional Footballers' Association's Harry Kewell Medal (for U23 player) and Male & Female Players of the Year.

The Australian Football Awards were created in 2009 to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the entire 'football family' - a concept now being promoted and leveraged through the 'We Are Football' A-League campaign.

Released from his international commitments, Carlos Hernandez made a surprise appearance at Melbourne Victory training on Tuesday and will be in the selection mix for Friday night's clash with Hyundai A-League arch rivals Adelaide United.
Hernandez, who played the last 25 minutes of last Friday's friendly against Brazil in San Jose, became available when Costa Rica's friendly against Cuba, scheduled for Tuesday night, was cancelled.
The 29-year-old forward headed straight back to Melbourne with a view to squeezing his way into the line-up that fought out a thrilling opening-round scoreless draw with Sydney FC.
"I just turned up to training and Carlos was back," said coach Mehmet Durakovic after Tuesday morning's workout at Gosch's Paddock.
"It was a fantastic surprise for us."
"He trained really well this morning and he's in the mix for the Adelaide side on Friday night."
Asked whether Hernandez, the Johnny Warren Medalist from 2009-10, was a chance to start against United, Durakovic said: "We'll make up our minds on Thursday afternoon."
"I've got a wealth of players and it's a good headache to have."
"We all know what Carlos can do to teams, so I've got that option ... to play him (as a striker). It's a wonderful option to have."
Durakovic said star signing Harry Kewell had pulled up well after playing the full 90 minutes last Saturday night.
Striker Archie Thompson is also in good shape despite undergoing minor surgery for a nasty wound to his left shin, the legacy of a scything tackle from Michael Beauchamp.
"Archie's OK," Durakovic said. "He got six stitches in his shin but, Archie being Archie, he doesn't want to miss a training session."
"I'm happy with Archie's performance."
Midfielder Billy Celeski was also given the all-clear to train on Tuesday after copping a knock to the knee against Sydney.
"We were really scared, we thought his knee's gone again but, knock on wood, that wasn't to be, it was just a cork," said Durakovic.
"Billy got a bit of treatment today, but he should be fine this week."

LFC have sent us notification that the window for applying for Anfield tickets for January to May 2012 Anfield fixtures via the Supporters Branches Ticket Scheme is now open.
So what you will need to do is:
* Ensure you have purchased an Official LFC Membership for the 2011/2012 season from liverpoolfc.tv (International, Adult or Child) and note your membership number for the supporters club membership form. An Official LFC Membership is required for EVERY person applying for tickets as your individual ticket for the game will be activated on your membership smart card.
* Ensure you are a Liverpool FC Supporters Club NSW member, if you are not already a member, please reply via return email requesting the membership form to enable you to join. A supporters club membership is required for each adult (over 18) applying for tickets. They are available for the princely sum of $10.
* Via reply to this email, confirm how many adult (and child if applicable) tickets for each game listed below you are applying for. Please also make sure you include all LFC membership numbers with the members name/s beside it in your email.
Anyone who has sent emails previously asking for specific tickets need to follow the above process as well as we will not be taking into account previous email requests.

Finally, the disclaimer. As this is a revamped process, we cant guarantee that you will get all or any of the tickets you request via this application process. In the first half of the season, the ticketing process was convoluted to say the least, and LFC may be tweaking the process for this application window. It DID look like we received every ticket we applied for during the first ticket application window, but we cant guarantee that this will be the case this time around. LFC are in the process of increasing staff to improve the communications to the supporters clubs so that we dont have the debarcle that was the first half of the season, but I cant guarantee that the process is fixed.

Football Federation Australia (FFA), the national governing body for football in Australia, is currently seeking a Technical Department Administrator to join its Coach Education team in Sydney. This is a new position which has been created in response to the expansion of the FFA’s Advanced Coach Education programs and the subsequent increase in administrative duties. The person who fills this role will play a key role in the successful delivery of the training programs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The specific duties and responsibilities of the role include:

· Assisting with the co-ordination and organisation of the Advanced Coaching training courses

· Holding responsibility for the course equipment and coaching apparel; keeping an accurate inventory, conducting stock takes, ordering, packing and distributing the gear. This will involve some manual heavy lifting.

· Attending the training courses and providing assistance throughout the course, this could involve photocopying material, organising catering, administration throughout the day and even filming of the sessions

· Printing and collating resources for the training courses

· Booking travel for people within the team

· Credit Card reconciliations for the National Coach Education Manager & Advanced Coaching Manager

· Providing general administrative support to the Technical Department Co-ordinator

Experience and skills required:

· Excellent organisational skills

· Intermediate level skills for Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel & PowerPoint

· Demonstrated initiative for new ways of working and contribution of ideas

· An understanding of the correct way to manually lift heavy items & an ability to manually lift heavy items

· Bubbly and friendly personality

· A ‘can do attitude’

· Fantastic customer service skills

· Ability to multi task

· A love of the game of football is desirable but not essential

· This role may involve evening and weekend work and travel to various different locations so the candidate must be able to be flexible with their working arrangements

A very successful Western Border SoccerAssociation season was capped off with deserving winners of the Player of TheYear & award presentation nights. On Friday 23^rd September theSenior Presentations held at the Commodore On The Park saw International CaptainChristian Cella honoured as the leagues Player of The Year with 19 votes,securing the win over Centrals Captain Jessie Wenham by four. With anoutstanding second half of the season Gambier City Sharks defender Craig Wrightwas a further vote back in third.

The leagues Top Goal Scorer was jointlyawarded to International duo Matthew Bueti & Omari Didero in his first yearat the club. While Premiership coach Lou Zaccardo was awarded Coach of the Yearfor the work he has done to get his team to the Premiership.

The B Grade Player of the year saw BruceMaddern from Apollo go back to back. He topped the votes on 23 from the 13premiership games played by his side. Bryce Strachn from Blue Lake enjoyed hisseason in the reserves with the Rangers and finished on 18 votes to be therunner-up. International’s Rashidi took the top goal scorer award in his firstseason in the league.

Sponsors of the Minor Premiership ShieldMichcon also made a presentation to International and presented them with acheque for $500 for taking out the Minor Premiership. The club now being thefirst name on the perpetual shield that will continue with the Associationfollowing the success for the format.

The Dycer Constructions Team of The Yearwas also announced on the night with players from six of the eight clubsfeatured. 36 players were nominated by the leagues eight coaches and the 16 tomake the team of the year were.

INTERNATIONAL CLAIMS 3 PREMIERSHIPS

A Magical day for football has seen International take out three of Western Border Soccer’s Premierships. The teams from Casadio Park competed in the Under 14, Under 17 & A Grade Grand Finals, winning all three. This is the First Time in Western Border Soccer that the Premiers have been crowned by winning a Grand Final, and with a large crowd it seemed the right way to go for the future of local soccer.

The A Grade Dycer Constructions Premiership was claimed by International with a thrilling 3 – 2 victory over Apollo. The two sides have met numerous times in 2011, with Apollo defeating International a fortnight ago in a Penalty Shoot-out to progress to the Grand Final. International who finished minor premiers at the end of the home and away season took the long road tho qualification defeating The Gamier City Sharks in Millicent.

The young International side on paper at the start of the season were not given much hope of being a major contender in 2011, but with the guidance of coach Lou Zaccardo, has seen them come of age & peak at the right time. An emotional Lou after the game mentioned he will not be at the helm of the club next year, and this may have been some inspiration for the side to perform as well as they did on the day.

The match started with play going the way of International. Morris had plenty of Goal Kicks as International really failed to test the Apollo keeper. A great run from Panagopolous put the pressure on Internationals defence but with no-one home for Apollo the opportunity was wasted.

Nearing the 20 minute mark and the breakthrough came for international when a pass from Panagopolous to Inglis was astray and intercepted by Matt Bueti for International. Cole tried to shut down Bueti leaving Sam Bueti in the middle of the park un-marked and open to receive a pass from Matt. Having time to set himself and place the ball past Morris.

International had a chance to extend their lead nearing half time when it was deemed an Apollo defender hand balled in the penalty area from a hard kicked International cross. Morony stepped up to take the spot kick & hit the bar giving a sigh of relief for the Apollo players. Play turned in their favour for the remainder of the half with plenty of opportunities, but nothing to change the score sheet. International finished the first half leading 1 – 0.

The second half started with some renewed enthusiasm from the Apollo players following Derek Ferguson’s half time address. Just a few minutes in and the first change came for Apollo when Inglis was substituted for John Stephenson to take to the park. This put Lennon to the backline & Stephenson in the centre of the park.

A great passage pf play led to the second goal for International when Ileasi, Manfrin and Sam Bueti combined for Bueti to slot a goal from an acute angle leaving Morris unable to stop it.

Shortly after Apollo claimed a goal back when Panagopolous found the goal with a great header from an Apollo cross, and it was game-on. Further substitutions were called with Apollo replacing Ferguson with Jamie Stephenson and Hancock with Wright, while International changed Sam Bueti with Todd Lewis fresh from his under 17 premiership earlier in the day. This moved Stenner up front for Apollo with Hodge and Ileasi wider for International. Morony went down in the middle of the park with a challenge from Lennon. This gave teams a little more time to get their breath and refresh for the final twenty minutes.

It was International who extended their lead with a great run down the left side of the park and a well placed ball to Didero un-marked at the back post who was able to easily place the ball in the goal to bring International closer to the trophy.

Apollo weren’t letting up. And snuck a goal with eight minutes to go, when Hodge seemed to be all on his own from a corner, nodding it home to liven the atmosphere at Bishop Road. There wasn’t to be any extra time as had been the case a fortnight ago. Cup winners and last years premiers Apollo unable to find an equalizer.

The Dycer Constructions Premiership heading back to Casadio Park for the seventh time in eight years. The inaugural Dycer Constructions player of the match was awarded to Sam Bueti for his work to setup the win.

In a day that saw International show they remain the powerhouse club of the competition it was a bittersweet victory in the B Grade for Apollo that will be overshadowed by the disappointing loss in the A Grade. While in the under 12’s at the start of the day, Portland showed why they dominated the competition in 2011 easily defeating Centrals.

The Western Border Soccer season will officially come to an end this weekend when the Presentation of the Player of the year is awarded, and the Western Border Team of The Year is announced. The presentations will be at The Commodore On The Park this Friday Evening, and tickets are available through the WBSA or from your club.

Melbourne Victory’s W-League team announced today that it will not be re-signing goalkeeper, Melissa Barbieri, for the upcoming W-League season, opting instead to name talented young shot-stopper Brianna Davey as the side’s first choice keeper.

It was, says Melbourne Victory W-League head coach Vicki Linton, ‘a very difficult decision’, ironically made necessary by an abundance of talent which she says is an enormously positive sign for women’s football in Victoria.

“Victoria is very lucky in the talent we have here,” said Linton.

“We have a long history of producing world class goalkeepers, from FFA and FFV ‘Hall of Fame’ inductee Theresa Deas, to Melissa Barbieri who has performed outstandingly for Melbourne Victory and the Matildas. I don’t think there’s any question that Brianna Davey has the talent to join that elite group in the very near future.”

Linton, who is also head coach of the Under 16 Women’s National Team, said that while Barbieri was still an outstanding keeper, she believed it was time for Davey to be given a chance at the top level.

“Melissa has been an amazing player at both State and National level, as well as an outstanding ambassador for the game,” said Linton.

“While letting any player go is difficult, we also have to do what we feel is the right thing for Melbourne Victory as a team. Going forward, we really believe it’s time for Brianna to step up to that ‘number one’ position.”

Davey has represented Australia at Under 14 and Under 16 levels and is currently in the Young Matildas squad preparing for the Under 19 AFC Championships. She has been with the Melbourne Victory W-League squad since 2010.

“Brianna is an outstanding goalkeeper and, though she is still young at 16, plays well beyond her years and, importantly, has the potential to get even better as she matures,” Linton added.

“Anyone who has seen her play in the Under 16s, or who had the chance to see her play in the three W-League games she played for Victory last season at the age of only 15, will know what a talented and exciting player she is.”

In farewelling Barbieri, Linton said Victory was delighted to have had such a successful relationship with her.

“She has been an enormous asset to Victory and I am sure she will continue to make an outstanding contribution to the sport in the future and I wish her all the very best.” Linton said.

DYCER CONSTRUCTIONS GRAND FINAL PREVIEW

The Dycer Constructions Premiership Grand Final will be held at the home of Gambier Centrals Soccer Club, Bishop Road on Sunday. For the first time in the history of the competition one team will walk away with the prize on the final day of the season.
Last years premiers Apollo have once again played the most attractive football and thoroughly deserve the opportunity to go back to back on Sunday. They have the strongest squad and coach Derek Ferguson boasts a squad that is the envy of most clubs in the league.
Their opponents on Sunday are their greatest rival, a team hungry to return to the winners circle International Soccer Club. Inter are without a doubt the most successful club in the history of the Western Border Soccer Association and losing their title to Apollo last year would have hurt the boys from Casadio Park. To lose it two years in row would see talk of a Webb Street dynasty.
Apollo have no secrets, they play the ball out from the back, encourage their fullbacks to attack, work as a unit and play short passes as they work their way slowly up the field. Ben Morris has been steady in goals and the back three of Chris Bytheway, David Coles and Tom Inglis is the best defensive unit in the league. In midfield they are good out wide with both George Panagopolous and Matthew Ripper capable of creating and scoring chances. In the middle the stable Gav Hancock, Wayne Lennon and Adam Hodge are very solid. Up front they will play the impressive Ash Stenner and one other, probably Stewie Wallace with Matt Ferguson left to come off the bench. All round they have quality and options a plenty with the three Stephenson brothers and Craig Walker all capable if called upon.
Inter on the other hand have not been as settled and have moved their squad around in recent weeks. Last week inter played three at the back and it worked quite well. The experienced Chris Williams, the much improved Adam Craig and the veteran Robbie Manfrin did the job without the need for the suspended Ricky McRoberts. He may find it hard to force his way back in this week. A defensive midfield three of Todd Lewis, Chris Cella and Andrew Ielasi provided protection for the back three and freedom for Omari Didero, Marcus Morony and Sam Bueti. Up front the hard working Matt Bueti chases most balls and plays the perfect foil for morony who is set for a big one Sunday. Since returning to the side Morony has struggled to find form and despite working hard last week it was the young wide boys, Didero and Sam Bueti who tore apart the sharks. This week inter will need Morony to take the lead and find the back of the net. For me he is the key and his battle with Chris Bytheway will be good to watch. Out wide Apollo have the edge with Panagopolous more willing to defend than Sam Bueti.
Experience will be the key on Sunday with Apollo's Stenner, Hodge, Cole, Lennon, and the Stephenson's all very capable of keeping their head in the pressure of a final, the big question is how Didero, Lewis the Bueti's and if called upon the capable Will Circelli, handle the same kind of pressure.
Derek Ferguson has had the answers each time they have clashed in recent times and the experience gained at Federation Cup level may prove advantageous, however Lou Zaccardo is the first to point out his side are getting closer taking the game last time they played to extra time and penalties. This weekend history will be made and if form is anything to go by, Apollo hold the edge in what will be a close battle.
The game will be broadcast on 5gtr fm with the round ball team of Scott Dickson and Nathan Butler providing coverage from 2pm.

All roads lead to the home of Millicent united on Sunday as the quest for the dycer constructions premiership heads into the preliminary final.
In the qualifying final last weekend international took Apollo to penalties in a cliff hanger at malseed park, while the sharks had a tough time of shaking off a tenacious gambier centrals at Webb st.
Both sides will be pleased with the fact they are one win away from a shot at glory, but it is inter who on paper will be the most comfortable going into Sunday's do or die clash. Last week inter fought hard against the reigning champions Apollo and despite going down for the fourth time in a row against Apollo, they are getting closer. Taking Apollo to extra time will have provided international coach lou zaccardo with plenty to think about.
The sharks on the other hand will need to improve on last weeks performance against centrals. At the back Craig wright and norton fuller looked very good but there would be question marks over their ability to create chances up front with both goals last week coming via the returning talismatic tobbei kennett. Both coming as a result of set pieces both a result of poor marking.
Historians will point out that back in the late nineties the crays, as they were known then, defeated inter, that result will have little or no impact on Sunday's clash. The two moments that coach John bruttomesso will need to remind his players of is the recent u17 premiership victory by the sharks and the victory only a few weeks ago at Webb st against Apollo.
The u17 premiership remains the clubs finest achievement and the fact that this side contains those stars and their battling qualities are important. That victory showed the sharks have the quality to achieve over an entire season not just week to week. Tobbie kennett, Craig wright, Corey pilven, Heath widdison and last years wbsa medalist matty weistra all defied the odds when they won that premiership.
They have defied the odds twice this year with stirring wins against Apollo and on both occasions they looked true contenders. This Sunday they must shake the tag of pretenders and prove they are title contenders. They have a good squad that boosts a strong defense, a physical midfield and creativity up front, how that midfield matches up against the experienced Marcus morony and the spritely Andrew ielisi will go a long way to deciding this weeks winner.
Both teams have been known to be physical and this will certainly play a major role come Sunday. Ricky mcrobert will be missing due to suspension for inter and both sides will be well aware that this game has the potential to feature a incident or two. Neither side can afford to go a man down as both sides lack the depth of Apollo who can sit back on Sunday and watch events unfold.
International go in as favorites, however if weistra and kennett are up for it it could go either way. For inter they would love another chance to take on old foes Apollo and return to the winners circle, for the sharks it is all about creating history. First win against inter in over a decade and a first finals appearance with a first senior trophy on the horizon, will it all be too much for the young sharks or is it their time?

WESTERN BORDER SOCCER FINALS REPORTS

Western Border Soccer’s Inaugural Premiership deciding finals series is under way. Sunday’s games saw the Elimination Finals between the third and fourth placed teams in each grade be played at Webb Street with the losing sides season coming to an end. While at Malseed park, it was the Qualifying Finals between the first two placed teams in each grade. The winner of this getting a week off and entry straight into the Grand Final to be played on September 18.

The much awaited Elimination Final between 3^rd place Gambier Centrals & 4th place Gambier City Sharks certainly did not disappoint the crowd. The last time these teams played, Centrals won comfortably 4-0 against a very under strength Sharks team in Round 12, but Centrals have given their youngsters a good run in the seniors this season that has paid dividens. The pressure of finals for the Sharks has not been a good one in 2011, losing to Apollo convincingly in the cup Semi.

Centrals captain Jesse Wehnam won the toss and decided to kick with the wind in the first half.

The Sharks started without their key player Matt Weistra, who was fulfilling his duties with South Gambier Football Club, playing in the A Grade Elimination final against North Gambier.

It was an arm wrestle right from the start, but it was the Sharks that started the attack with Julien Tralongo in action very early in the game when he shoots from distance only to see the ball travel over the cross bar.

Both teams were applying lots of pressure, causing many turnovers and playing counter attack style game. The Lions were sending long balls to their forwards, but the Sharks defence of Widdison, Wright, Pilven and Leary prevented any early attempts on goal.

The hard running midfield of Tobbei Kennett & Matt Gordon were causing some concerns for the Lions as many times they broke through the defence and had shots on goal.

Centrals keeper Bytheway was in good form, and save after save denied the Sharks any goals.

It was in the 28^th minute the sharks broke the deadlock when Pilven threw the ball to the feet of his captain Kennet, who controls the ball, dribbles to the edge of the 18 yd box, and from a tight angle shoots the ball under the cross bar, denying any chance for Bytheway to save. Coach Bruttomesso made his first change bringing off Julien Tralongo who seemed to have over stretched his hamstring, and replacing him with his younger brother Chris.

Half Time Score. Sharks lead 1-0

The second half continued in tight, hard fought fashion, it wasn’t until the 80^th minute that Centrals young gun, Mark Judd found some space on the right side of the field, and from approx 20 yds blasts the ball over the Sharks keeper Fuller into the back of the net to draw the game level.

At the final whistle, the scoreline was locked at 1-1. Both teams now have to play extra time.

Substitute Matt Weistra arrived during the break and quickly got ready to go on and play in the extra time. All players were starting to feel fatigued after a long 90 min arm wrestle.

It was the 2 goal keepers that were giving the large crowd some entertainment making some great saves, both Fuller (Sharks) & Bytheway (Centrals).

About halfway through the first period of additional time Kennett found himself on the receiving end of a perfectly placed corner from Wiestra to guide it past Bytheway, and put the Sharks in the lead, and eventually the win to book a place in next weeks Preliminary Final.

At Malseed Park it was the last decades two dominant sides. Minor Premiers International taking on Cup Winners and last years Premiers Apollo. T was always going to be a great game. International have been disappointing on few occasions this year against Apollo suffering heavy losses. Coach Lou Zaccardo well aware of what Apollo has on the park. With Catain Dante Bonner still sidelined, it was going to leave a small weakness to the minor premiers midfield. Derek Ferguson had a full strength side for the match, and was able to rest Wallace after he played a role in the earlier B Grade victory for the Blue & White. Also joining him on the bench were all three Stephenson brothers, a bench any side would love to have.

The game started with frantic pace keeping all players on their toes. Some hard tackling and pushing was being kept a watch on by the referee, pulling up incidents to ensure that the players played the ball.

13 minutes in and the Morony was issued a caution after coming from behind in a dangerous manner. Shortly after this an infringement just outside the area when Didero swung his arm back into Ripper trying to contest a ball. A few kick given and it was was the captain Hodge who was to take it. The wall was in place set by Reid. Hodge took the kick placing it to the far side of the goal. Reid was able to get fingers on it, but hit very well it still ended up in the net. Apollo in front.

International stepped up the workload and had many chances out wide with Sam Bueti making moves. Inglis was very strong defencively on his opponent, using his head to cut off many of the balls coming to Bueti. A late challenge from Hancock on Morony found him the second caution of the match issued from the referee.

Apollo supporters thought they were had done by when Ripper went down in the Penalty area. The referee did not see any contact, and looked to his assistant for confirmation.

Into Half time and Apollo held the lead. The second period started as the first finished, both midfields working extremly hard to put the ball forward. Apollo were feeling the pressure. Tempers started to boil over when a challenge from Sam Bueti was dangerous, and McRobert used excessive force on Panagopolous who was near the incident. Ferguson from Apollo also found himself on caution after he gave Bueti a nudge in the back whist on his way for discussions with the referee.

With just under ten minutes to play it was a long ball forward to Matt Bueti that saw Morris have to leave his area to challenge. The ball fell to the ground after contacting Morris, Bueti also went to ground, but jumped up quickly after the ball went past him, to put it in the net. There was a flag for Offside and the referee discussed the incident with his assistant, deeming that the ball was played forward by an Apollo defender the goal was allowed to stand. This saw the game head into additional time with the scores locked at 1 all.

Apollo took the lead early into the added time when a quickly taken free kick from John Stephenson found Ripper who guided it past Reid to take the upper hand.

The second period saw Bueti claim his second goal of the match when he placed one past Morris, from just a few yards out. The game was to be decided on Penalty’s.

Cella won the toss and elected to take the first spot kick, and it was Ileasi that was to take this for his team. Morris stood tall in the goals and selected the correct side to save, but the ball hit the upright and kept International from scoring. With Hodge off during the game Bytheway took the captaincy and was first to take a kick for Apollo. He made no mistake, putting his team in the lead.

Morony stepped up for the second and kept his team in the game by securing a much needed goal. Ripper followed this with another goal for Apollo. Keeping them in front 2 – 1.

Craig for International was next, and he put the ball over the bar, opening the door for Apollo to near seal the victory with their next kick that was taken by John Stephenson. He made no mistake putting his team to a 3 – 1 lead.

Captain Cella was to take the next for his tea. He was able to keep the team in the game putting it past Morris and making it just that little bit more pressure for Wallace who was to take the fourth kick for his team. He was able to put it past Reid to seal the victory for his team and let them advance to the Grand Final in two weeks, forcing International to now play The Sharks to set up a possible rematch.

In one of the closest fought contests between these two perennial achievers, City fought out an exhilarating and entertaining victory over their nemesis Palace in the South East Womens Football Association preliminary final at Blue Lake Sports Park last Saturday.

For one team, this fixture would herald their final hurrah for the season while for the other it presented one final opportunity to engage in battle with Wanderers in next weeks highly anticipated grand final.

Wanderers were the first side to stake their grand final appearance by defeating Palace by two goals to nil a week earlier in the qualifying final.

In a bruising yet honest tussle, the City and Palace preliminary final was perhaps one of the most entertaining fixtures in womens football for some time. City threw the game wide open when they were first on the scoreboard within the first few minutes of play courtesy of a trademark Jen Smith powerful run and lethal finish. Palace had beganwith a tactically changed line-up and this may have contributed to the early dominance of City. Held scoreless in their previous three fixtures, Palace needed to find a goal-scoring formulae if they were to begeniune title contenders. City had not been beaten by Palace in their previous encounters in the home and away meetings for the season and now they were well and truly in the box seat. Palace were able to settle in to their trademark passing game but City enjoyed their equal share of possession and always looked threatening. The scores were levelled when a Palace attacking move ended in a deflected defensive clearance that could only find the back of the City net. But the momentum was still with City as their tenacity in front of theiropponents goal was resumed and ultimately rewarded when Erin Ireland put the finishing and clinical touch on a slick City move. The half time interval gave both coaches an opportunity to implore on their players the sense of urgency, determination and hard work that would be required if they really wanted to play in a grand final. Palace responded well following the half-time huddle and began to play with a sense of genuine purpose and self-belief. Their renewed enthusiasm was rewarded when Eleanor McClintock levelled the scores midway through the second term and a penalty shoot-out loomed as a very real possibility. But with less than a minute to play in regular time, Jamie Van Dyk guided her strike across the face of the Palace goal and inside the far post much to the delight of the City players and supporters. In what ultimately may be remembered as one of the classic encounters between the two sides, City have finally brought to an end an era of dominance by Palace and their four consecutive premierships since 2007. A new chapter in the history of womensfootball in the South East is about to be written.

Saturday afternoon saw the preliminary final take place between Palace and Wanderers. In an entertaining first half both teams had several chances to score but both goalkeepers made some impressive saves. Imogen Pratt and Monique Sims fought it out in the midfield with neither player gaining an advantage for their team. Half time brought a major shift in fortunes for the Palace girls with Kate Kourmouzis running on to a superb through ball to ram it home not long after the whistle to start the half. Unfortunately for an under manned Wanderers team this triggered a run of four more unanswered goals. With some terrific finishing from Alesha Hales and Imogen Pratt Palace was always going to be hard to catch in the race to next weeks grand final against Villa. The Wanderers girls can be most proud of a excellent season under first time coach Leonie McCallum.

WBSA Elimination Final Centrals v Sharks‏

The much awaited Elimination Final between 3^rd place Gambier Centrals and 4th place Gambier City Sharks, was played at the home of Apollo SC on Sunday.

The last time these teams played, Centrals won comfortably 4-0 against a very under strength Sharks team in Round 12.

The Sharks finally were able to produce a full strength squad with all players being available.

The Game summary as follows:

Centrals captain Jesse Wehnam won the toss and decided to kick with the wind in the first half.

The Sharks started without their key player Matt Weistra, who was fulfilling his duties with South Gambier Football Club, playing in the A Grade Elimination final against North Gambier.

The hard running midfield of Tobbei Kennett & Matt Gordon were causing some concerns for the Lions as many times they broke through the defence and had shots on goal.

Lions keeper Bytheway was in good form, and save after save denied the Sharks any goals.

Jason Brooks & Marc Bope were following instructions from their coach keeping the most dangerous, talented players for the Lions in Alex Sims & Mark Judd very close and denying them any positive possession.

(28min) From the side line in the Sharks attacking half, Pilven throws the ball to the feet of his captain Tobbei Kennet, who controls the ball, dribbles to the edge of the 18 yd box, and from a tight angle smashes the ball so hard it goes under the cross bar, denying any chance for Bytheway to save. What a goal. Score 1-0

Coach Bruttomesso made his first change bringing off Julien Tralongo who seemed to have over stretched his hamstring, and replacing him with his younger brother Chris.

Half Time Score. Sharks lead 1-0

(80min) Centrals young gun, Mark Judd found some space on the right side of the field, and from approx 20 yds blasts the ball over the Sharks keeper Fuller into the back of the net. Was a great goal. Score 1-1.

At the final whistle, the scoreline was locked at 1-1.

Both teams now have to play extra time (10mins/each way).

As both teams were having a break, Matt Weistra arrived and quickly got ready to go on and play in the extra time.

Unfortunately, Chris Tralongo was selected to come off making way for Matt Weistra.

All players were starting to feel fatigued after a long 90 min arm wrestle.

Another substitute was made by Coach Bruttomesso when Salva Kasole was suffering from cramps came off and was replaced by much experienced player Andy Gentile.

Gentile had made an immediate impact as his decision making and passing skills were evident, and was very unlucky not to score.

It was the 2 goal keepers that were giving the large crowd some entertainment making some great saves, both in Norton Fuller (Sharks) & William Bytheway (Centrals).

(5 mins –second half/extra time) Sharks are awarded a corner, Weistra steps up to take it.

Weistra delivers the perfect ball, with his captain Tobbei Kennett against Centrals captain Jesse Wenham.

Kennett manages to break free and positions himself to meet the ball and executing the game winning header into the top left hand corner of goal. A helpless Bytheway could only watch the ball as it crossed the line. Sharks lead 2-1.

Final whistle blew, and it was the Sharks that were the victors and now earn themselves a place in next weeks Preliminary Final against their arch rivals International SC, who lost to Apollo in penalties after the scoreline was locked at 2-2 after extra time.

Matt Weistra will need to be at his best this weekend if the Sharks hope to upset in form Centrals

The Western Border Soccer Association heads into unfamiliar territory this weekend with the first round of the Dycer Constructions Premiership Final Series.
The top four have been head and shoulders above the bottom four and Sunday will see one team move into the final and another knocked out of the competition.
The elimination final takes place at Apollo's home ground Webb Street and sees third placed Gambier Centrals take on the fourth placed Gambier City Sharks. These two sides have met twice this year with Centrals boasting the better record. In round 4 Centrals fought back to record a gutsy 2 all draw and in round 11 Centrals travelled to Shark Park and took all three points against an understrength Sharks outfit.
The Sharks, on paper have a side that can match anyone and after months of injury and suspension will field a full strength side. On paper the Sharks look good, they boost one of the best keepers inn the league in Norton Fuller, three quality defenders in Heath Widdison, Craig Wright and Cory Pilven. In midfield they have the established combination of Matthew Gordon and Tobbei Kennett, the drive of Jason Brooks and the flair of Matty Weistra. Add to that Salva Kosole has been in great form, Julian Trolungo is in red hot form and Chris Trolungo was best on ground last week. If they can keep it together they should win, and that is the big question, can they keep it together against a young and fit Centrals outfit that well and truly got under their skin in round 4.
Centrals have been in good form lately and the emergence of Mark Judd and Alex Sims has been a huge boost for coach Jeff O'laughlin. Centrals boast a back line that has conceded the lowest amount of goals in the league. In fact they have conceded 11 goals less than the sharks and scored a whopping 27 more goals. For centrals the big test will be if they can mix it physically and not get involved in off the ball issues like they did in round 4. Centrals deserve to be favorites for two reasons, one they have not lost to the Sharks this year and two they finished above them on the ladder after the home and away season, however, the Sharks, man for man, have the better side. At the end of the day this game could be decided by the coaches.
The qualifying final between the leagues top ten International Soccer Club and current champions Apollo Soccer Club will take place at the home of Blue Lake Soccer Club, Malseed Park. The two best teams in the competition have already faced off or silverware on several occasions with Apollo taking out the Clem Michelin trophy earlier in the year and the Belgiornos Cup Final in late June.
On both those occasions Apollo were too good winning 5 2 on each occasion. In fact Apollo have put 13 goals past Inter on the three occasions they have played, a fact Lou Zaccardo will be keen to address on Sunday. In his favour, he was impressed by his sides fightback against Apollo in their last tussle and despite going behind early feels they dominated the second half and deserved more. Up front Inter have pace and can be very direct. They have a more stable midfield with the return of Marcus Morony and Andrew Ielasi's form has been the best of his career. It is the leaky defense that will be the greatest concern for Zaccardo.
Apollo, on the other hand are the highest goal scorers in the competition and with so many options, coach Derek Ferguson should be confident his boys are the team to beat. In the cup final George Panagopolous, Ash Stenner and Stewie Wallace tore apart inter and with likes of Adam hodge and Wayne Lennon keen to add to the trophy cabinet Apollo are in the box seat to move into the final.

Apollo should have too much for international on Sunday, and they should take another step towards back to back premierships.

Having played each other in Round 14, both sides new what to expect and both teams delivered a classic elimination Final.

Chances were hard to come by early as City attempted to open ups the United defence. Meg Walters was combining well with Emily Birch down the right as City made many forays into theUnited box. Kylie Durbidge was linking well in the United mid-field with Keisha Seiler which created a number of shots of goal but were safely handled by City keeper Lowe.

The dead lock was broken late in the half and it was no surprise that it came from out wide. Birch picked up the ball on the half way line and pushed forward. Once balanced her cross cut a path through the United defence opening up the goals. Jen Smith was the last one in the waiting line and methodically placed the ball past the keeper and into the net. HALFTIME 1-0, City

As second half progressed, so did the United attacks. Being behind in an elimination final makes you through caution to the wind as there is no tomorrow for second place. Julia Reader, who had been stopping City attacks all game, was then thrust forward to create a few of her own, and the move worked. The United side lifted and camped themselves in the City goal mouth as a number of goal mouth scrambles could have seen the score line level. The City defence dug deep as Erin Ireland and Kahlie Trapolino held on. Then the inevitable happened. A long ball forward was flicked on by Smith and fell into the path of Emma MacKay. United tried to chase her down but MacKay was able to balance and place the ball under the United keeper to double the advantage. This spurred on the United outfit and with ten minutes to go, United got one back. Another goal mouth scramble saw the ball fall the Reader who found the corner of the goal.

The last five minutes saw no further changes to the score as United pushed for an equaliser. When the final whistle blew, City had done enough to hold on and earn another week of knock out football. United’s season is over but after today they have showed themselves they we be a side to watch next season.

Wintery football conditions met players and the large crowd of spectators alike, when Wanderers met County in the Under 14's Elimination Final at Blue Lake Sports Park on Saturday afternoon. Enthusiasm and team spirit were evident in both teams, with experienced finals participants Wanderers disguising any pre-match nerves well. Underdogs County came onto the pitch hoping for a win and were determined to work hard and do their best to get that result.

County forwards Karissa Coulson and Bree Thomson worked hard from the first whistle to score the first goal of the match, but it was not to be, as Wanderers J White took that honour. County's Emma Schultz, Shae Thomson and Lauren Smith in the midfield pushedforward when possible, but quick running and attacking pressure from Wanderers made that difficult. Wanderers Monique Sims secured their second goal towards the end of the first half, despite the best efforts of the County defence. The smallest player on the pitch BecMorgan, stood firm against the taller Wanderers players and chased down any loose balls well.

After half time, both teams returned to the pitch with renewed determination and drive.Wanderers goalkeeper Hayley Edwards, did a superb job in stopping any balls that County managed to get through the tight Wanderers defence of K Payne, Alice Nunan and W Green. Free running and great ball skills and team passing, saw Wanderers' J White score herself a second goal mid way through the second half, despite the defensive efforts ofGeorgie Peate, Stef D'Agostino, Alice Roughana and Julia Alvey. County goalkeeper, Ashley Tye, stopped many of the shots on goal by the Wanderers forwards, but the continued attacking pressure of Wanderers kept the ball in their half. In the final minutes, with the Elimination final result to Wanderers assured, the County coach put Tye on the field, with Katie McMillan then pulling on the gloves. A brilliant shot on goal by Wanderers K Antunov went past the County defence to register another Wanderers goal for the match.

It was a wonderful football match to watch and all players should be proud of their accomplishments.

The County Juniors were disappointed to have lost in their first final's appearance but are already looking forward to an exciting Season 2012 in the South East Women's Football Association (SEWFA) league.

In the final round of the Dycer Constructions Premership, Sharks travel to Millicent to face Millicent United.

Last time these teams met, Sharks run out comfortable winners 7-1.

Sharks were eager to find some form with a week away from the critical Elimination Final against Centrals

Sharks were missing some of their key players this week ensuring that the strongest team possible will be available for the important match the following week.

Also missing was the Sharks Coach Bruttomesso, who was admitted to hospital on Friday suffering from severe back pain.

WBSA Legend , President and assistant coach Vic Gentile stepped into to take control of the senior teams in Bruttomesso’s absence.

The weather conditions were cold and windy and a very strong breeze made the playing conditions very difficult.

Game Summary as follows:

(20min) Good midfield play resulted in a well finished goal by the captain of the day Jason Brooks. It started when Kasole received the ball, passed out wide to Bope who cleverly switched play to find Brooks unmarked who carried the ball into the box and smashed the ball past the keeper. Score 1-0.

Coach Gentile made the first substitute of the game bringing off key striker Julien Tralongo for a rest and replacing him with up and coming youngster Luke Harris who bagged 2 goals in the u17 game earlier on in the day.

Tralongo was needed for the bigger mission that lay ahead the following week. This gave another opportunity for youngsters to get more time in Senior games.

Sharks were dominating possession and kept the ball in their attacking half for most of the half, but it was the United defence of Dibley that kept United in the game.

Half Time

(55min) Again, good passages of play in the midfield, when Widdison placed a well timed through ball to a hard running Bope, who displayed some fancy footwork to get past the defence and slam another one home for the Sharks Score 2-0

(70min) It was Widdison again who executed a killer pass to Kasole, using his incredible skill had no trouble slotting the ball past the keeper. Score 3-0

The Final score Sharks winning 3-0

The Sharks now prepare to do battle with the Lions in the much anticipated Elimination final being played next week at the Apollo SC –Webb Street.

ROUND 14 PREVIEW

The final round of the Dycer Constructions Premiership takes place this Sunday with pride and preparing for the finals series high on the agenda.

The top four are set and results this weekend will have no affect. The Round Ball Game of the Week will see Blue Lake take on Apollo Soccer Club at Malseed Park. Blue Lake have been inconsistent this year and with the appointment of club legend Lewis ferguson at the helm of the under 17's for 2012, senior coach Olu Deyolu will be keen to end the season on a positive to provide confidence in the club over the summer break. Deyolu, in his first season in charge, has weathered the storm after a poor start to the season and after the recent loss to Naracoorte a good performance is vital.

In contrast Derek Ferguson's Apollo side have cruised into the finals series. In recent weeks Ferguson has tinkered with his squad and I would expect he will do the same on Sunday. Apollo should record the win and will book a qualifying final date with league leaders International in a fortnight.
Inter travel to Naracoorte this week to take Naracoorte United after Naracoorte United forfeited to International last week. This week Naracoorte will end their season with a loss as Inter prepare for next Sunday's blockbuster.
In other games Portland host Gambier Centrals and Millicent host The Sharks. Both hosts will go in as underdogs and will have a tough time as Centrals and The Sharks prepare for their cut throat elimination final next weekend.
This season has been a difficult one for Millicent United and the summer break couldn't have come around quick enough. Winless since round 5 Millicent have conceded a whopping 92 goals the season averaging 7 goals against them each week. Upfront they have only scored 6 goals since late may.
Portland have shown steady improvement this year and have set clear goals for the 2012 season. They are desperate to finish near the top 4 and a positive performance at home in the last game of the season would be a great way to end the season. The future is positive for Portland.

City 4 United 1

City had a dream start when U14 Jess Veerhoven opened the scoring in the first few minutes of the game. City kept pressing but were kept out by an organized United defense.

United then began attacking and were rewarded with a free kick outside the eighteen yard area. From the free kick Sarah Mariano reacted quickest and headed the ball home to equal the score.

With subtle changes during the half time break, City took the initiative as well as the lead after some fine play from Jamie VanDyjk. United kept pressing as Seiler and Durbidge took control of the mid field. City’s passing game started to open up the United defense and they added another two goals in the second half to secure a 4-1 victory.

Not enough to gain second spot and the double chance, but enough to give it some momentum when the same two sides meet in the Elimination Final.

County drew with Palace

A well fought out game. County came out very determined, there was still a chance if they were to win to get into the top 4 for finals. A very even contest between the players. Argueably the two best players in the league Angie Paspaliaris(County) and Tess Andrews (Palace) battled t out all day giving there players opportunities to score, but to no avail. A great game to watch defenders from both sides worked hard to prevent any score.

Millicent 2 d Villa

Perfect weather for the last home and away game for season 2011 Millicent and Villa both started the game well. Although Millicent were the first to settle. During the first half Millicent had several opportunities to score with forwards Toni Bellingham and Nikki Lambert playing well with several attempts at scoring. Whilst in Millicents defence Michelle Lines and Wanita Robinson played very well to prevent Villa from finding the back of the net. Half Time nil all. Millicent came out strongly in the second half to score the first goal for the game from Nikki Lamberts boot. Villa followed this with an increased intensity in their work rate puttingMillicents goal keeper, Hannah Kent under pressure. With the Millicent coach making some moves in his side to put the game back on an even keel. Shortly after MillicentsNikki Lambert then found the back of the net to put in her second goal for the day. Finishing the game with Millicent 2 Villa 0 and providing the spectators with a good display ofwomens soccer. Beautiful football conditions met players and spectators alike when County
met Palace at Blue Lake Sports Park on Saturday afternoon. Both teams came
onto the pitch showing good team spirit and great enthusiasm, knowing that
the final positions on the Junior table were filled and the game result
would have no bearing on the final four.

The County coach experimented with player positioning this match, and the
team responded to the chance to play different roles by pushing forward
eagerly. County's usual sweeper, AnneZwijnenburg, was inspiring in attack
with help from Bree Thomson, and also GeorgiePeate and Shae Thomson in the
midfield. Palace responded with clearing passes from Ellenor McClintock and
Imogen Pratt. Palace's Imogen Pratt and KKourmouzis scored three goals
between them in the first half, despite the defensive efforts of County's
April Hockey and Julia Alvey.

After half time, both teams returned to the pitch with renewed enthusiasm
and were really enjoying their football. Palace scored another goal early in
the second half. County goalkeeper, Ashley Tye, had a standout match with

campaign in the South East Women's Football Association (SEWFA) league.

Palace however will be determined to get back into form not having won the last two games. Emma Ripper and Leonie McCallum from Wanderers will lead their young side to victory

Then at 3pm elimination final between City and United. Last time they meet it was a very one sided affair with City winning .Jen Smith from City would be one of the highest goal scorers for the league and her coach Stuart Birch will be wanting to see her with more. City will certainly go in as favourites.

All the games are played out at Blue Lake Sports Park this Saturday.

CANNAVARO WATCHES PERTH GLORY ‏

Fabio Cannavaro, one of the biggest names in world football will be in the stands watching tonight, when Perth Glory take on Al-Ahli from the United Arab Emirates.

Cannavaro is as close to football royalty as it gets, a world cup winning captain and the only defender to win the ballon d'Or, as European footballer of the year in 2006.

The star Italian is in Perth as an ambassador for Al-Ahli, having been forced to retire from the final year of his contract with the club because of injury.

"It should be a good game and one I’m looking forward to watching," Cannavaro said.

Even without Cannavaro, Al-Ahli still has a trio of big name players.

Striker Grafite was the top goal scorer in the German Bundesliga in 2008/09 while Brazilian Jaja Coelho and Chile international Luis Jimenez are top shelf players.

The international friendly will be another important game for Perth Glory in the build-up to this seasons Hyundai A-League which kicks-off in October.

Former Socceroo Chris Coyne returns from an Achilles injury having impressed at training but midfielder Liam Miller has been ruled out with a quad strain.

Having already played Scottish giants Celtic and South African sides Platinum Stars and AmaZulu this pre-season, tonight's game will give Perth Glory coach Ian Ferguson another chance to see his exciting new team in action after two months of tough training.

Kick-off at nib Stadium tonight is 8pm.

General admission tickets are $10 and available from Gate 3.

Melbourne Victory fans and Australian football supporters will see Harry Kewell in the Hyundai A-League this season playing for Melbourne Victory.

Harry Kewell and Melbourne Victory today announce that an unconditional agreement has now been reached.

Harry Kewell is arguably the most famous footballer Australia has produced with a successful career to date in the English Premiership with both Leeds United and Liverpool and more recently in Europe with Galatasaray. Harry is also regarded as the talisman of the Qantas Socceroos, having captained the side, also clocking up 54 caps for his country and scoring 16 goals.

Dozen hurt in soccer brawl

A WILD brawl involving players and spectators at a North Adelaide soccer match has left one man with head injuries and many others bloodied and bruised.

The worst-injured man, one of the game's goalkeepers, was hit from behind with a bottle.

Witnesses said the Seaford Rangers keeper was "smashed from behind" by an opposition Maiwand player and another Seaford player was "knocked out" when hit several times with a metal pole during a fight involving about 50 people.

The injured player regained consciousness shortly after and a doctor at the scene gave medical care to both men before paramedics and police arrived, witnesses said.

A fight broke out on the field between players just before 5pm then spilled over to include spectators in an "intense" brawl in front of other spectators, including young mothers and at least two children aged under six.

"He (a Maiwand player) was swinging the pole around and the guy went down, out cold, and the (goalie) was smashed with a bottle on the back of his neck," a witness told The Advertiser.

"When they realised he was really hurt, a lot of people just ran off. There were a lot of people with bloody faces."

More than a dozen police attended and Adelaide CIB detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and players.

Its with great excitement that we announce that Lewis Ferguson has been successful in applying for the U17's coaching position for season 2012.

Lewis of course has been coaching our under 14’s for the last couple of years and is ready for the next challenge of coaching.

The Blue Lake committee have acted very early this year to make sure that the Rangers didn't go without the key junior side for a third straight year.

From a club point of view this year has been very difficult for our senior sides. We haven't had the luxury that other clubs have had to call on their juniors if needed. This lack of youth has been noted and we are now moving forward to make sure that the club continues to perform and grow.

The committee was happy to accept the application from Lew as he is well known within the footballing (soccer) community of the WBSA and his wealth of experience and knowledge that he brings to the position will prove to be a huge asset to our under 17's. We know that Lewis will also correctly prepare them for senior football (soccer).

Palace v. City (seniors)

Fielding relatively youthful sides, both Palace and City appeared as quite different looking teams than the two who met in last years grand final.

Blending junior and experienced players has been common practice at both camps and in recent fixtures picking a winner has never been easy for the tipsters. Last Saturdays encounter was no exception. With slightly favorable conditions in the first half, City werenot able to penetrate a frugal Palace defense. Neither goalkeeper was genuinely tested andthe 0-0 score line at the interval was a testament to the respect each side had for the other. City did break the deadlock, however, midway through the second half when Erin Ireland finished off a fine move with technical excellence. That was the only time the scorekeepers were to be troubled as the game essentially became a battle in the midfield sector. The result sees City close the gap on the top two sides and with only one fixture remaining in the home and away, there is still plenty of interest in the top four placings as the season continues to unfold.

County 4 d Villa 2

County were definitely fired up and started the game with a high intensity, putting a lot of pressure on Villa’s backs early. This constant pressure resulted in the first goal for County coming from a high looping shot that sailed over the Villa keeper’s gloves, 1-0.

Then a goal for handball in the box, quickly slotted home by the barest of margins with the keeper diving over the ball. Villa pressed on a few occasions but lacked any cohesive element to finish the moves off.

Some days you wish you had a camera, Julie Beck rushes across the park to trap a high goal kick and somehow manages to trap the ball perfectly except she is standing on the ball, time froze and she gracefully up ended on the ground with County collecting the ball.

The first half ended with another goal to County with the score at halftime being 3-0 to County.

The second half saw a more resilient Villa, with a few attacking moves almost paying off early. County kept pushing and were again rewarded with another handball in the box, this time the keeper saved it but the penalty taker followed up to slot it home.

This seemed to spark a fire under the Villa girls and they quickly scored from A Beck and M Wilmot to get the score to 4-2. Now the game was really on, Villa was finishing fast andpressing hard but County managed to hold out with the end result being County running out 4-2 winners.

UNITED 3 d PORTLAND 2

As the finals series draws closer, United needed to secure a win on Saturday. Drawing the top 3 teams in the last four rounds provided a challenge to the reds and they were determined to claim the points against Portland.

Portland started the match with a change to their regular structure by playing club stalwart Donna Kilgour in attack as opposed to her regular defensive role. However, once again theUnited defence held firm, with the goal keeper only getting two touches in the first half. Perhaps playing their best half of the season, United linked well along the pitch, with Sarah Mariano running rampant along the right. United were able to take the lead after Mariano finished a pinpoint cross from Keisha Seiler and a second soon followed when a save by Portland’s keeper was not collected cleanly and was placed into the net.

A third added after the half time break saw United lose their urgency and they were soon punished when Portland found a chink the backline and fired home a rocket into the top corner. Portland scored their second shortly after in an identical fashion by young gunMikayla Atwell. The last minutes of the match wore away with both teams throwing everything they had at the ball. The final whistle saw a relieved United claim the three points to consolidate their position on the ladder.

Wanderers 5 def Millicent

At Millicent Wanderers continued its winning run against a hard working Millicent. As hard as Millicent tried they had no answer to the running players like E Ripper & J Donghia and with L McCallum intercepting a lot of Millicents forward moves Wanderers went in at half time 3-0 up. Millicent this year have shown that they never give up continued to work hard through midfielders B Hann K Sawtell Wanderers still had to work hard and with the defence led by goalkeeper H Kent who made some great saves Millicent restricted Wanderers to 2 goals in the 2nd half while Millicents N Lambert had 3 good shots on goal, for no result. Final score Wanderers 5 Millicent 0.

U14s

Palace 3 d City

In near perfect weather conditions, Palace U14 girls stepped onto the park to play against friendly rivals City.

Both teams were ready for a tough match with well experienced players on both sides making it an exciting game for all to watch.

As a team Palace juniors were raring to go with their pint size striker in Portia Holdmanworking hard to push the ball forward and older sister Jordan in goals, taking any opportunity to come out and stop a goal.

City too were ready for a challenge and their well structured back line made it very hard for Palace to break through. Some

super goal keeping added to the entertainment.

When the whistle blew at full time, it was 3-0 Palace’s way, but the smile on the faces of both teams didn’t reflect on the final result. The game was well played by both sides.

Villa 5 d County 1

The game burst into life with County scoring from the kick off in what would have to be one of the quickest goals this season.Slightly unsettled by this turn of events Villa were slow to respond and lacked a bit of drive and determination to get the ball allowing County to capitalize on their early advantage. However after a tight 10 minute tussle, Villa finally prevailed and got on the score board. This was the start of a three goal scoring spree by Villa that led us into halftime with the scores at 3-1 Villa’s way.The second half was more Villa’s than County’s with Villa netting twice more to finish the game 5-1 winners.

The midfield from both teams worked hard and put together some lovely flowing football. It was great to see young R Morgan return to the field in the second half having accidentally stopped a thunder bolt like pass from Miki Hollands with the side of her face, all good and no damage.Well played both teams and what a future women’s soccer has in the South East with you all as players.

We would advise to get there as early as possible to be able to gain entry. We will be there from approx 9pm. Message From The CEO

Dear Scott,
Greetings from Albury Wodonga, where our Club is currently stationed for leg one of the Westpac Community Football Festival.
The festivals see us decamp to a regional area for three days, hosting clinics, coaching workshops and events which culminate in a friendly match-up against local opposition.
We have been overwhelmed by the welcome received from the local community here on the Victoria-New South Wales border, and are confident our impact will help leave football in a better place.
The countdown to round one of the Hyundai A-League season steps up this weekend as we approach eight weeks until our opening match-up against the Newcastle Jets at Ausgrid Stadium.
It’s certainly been a fruitful off-season for our Club as we bolstered our attacking ranks through the signings of Maycon, Mate Dugandzic, David Williams and Fred, providing Head Coach John van ‘t Schip with significant firepower for this season.
Add the firing Jason Hoffman and Alex Terra to the list and we are certainly in possession of a plethora of avenues to goal as we approach our second ever season.
And all signs bode well that we will be able to reach a fresh plain this season, with a debut finals appearance certainly the goal for all at the Club.
We feel the time is now for our side to paint not only Melbourne but the Hyundai A-League red and white. Our team is driven, motivated and ready to make its mark and I hope you will be able to join us as we embark on this journey during 2011/12.
Memberships are on track to surpass last season’s total, with over 2,000 supporters pledging to make this season one of Red, White and You.
We hope to see you at AAMI Park when we return for our first home match of the Hyundai A-League season on Sunday October 16 against Perth Glory.

GDay all,
Events are coming thick and fast. Our first game of the season against Sunderland will be a big turnout on a saturday night, we hope to see everyone at Cheers raring to go. Kickoff is 11:55pm so rock up early to get prime position. People will start to arrive from about 10pm.
Now, also we have been invited to take part in the Football Supporters Ultimate Pub Comp. This will be held at Cheers on Saturday 3rd September starting at 1130am. Details as follows:

It’s that time of year again where here at FFDU we run with one of our Football Supporters Clubs ‘Ultimate Pub Comp’.
Basically the Pub Comp compromises of Supporters Clubs (limited number of clubs allowed) competing in a number of events during a Saturday afternoon, Trivia, Cricket Darts. Poker and then finally we finish on Pool.
The event is organised by Footy Fans Downunder and due to demand we have again brought it back to Sydney.
All events are team events with trivia being unlimited in numbers in team and the darts and pool requiring 8 players from each team, many people just come down for the social element to cheer there Club on.
The date for this year’s Sydney Pub Comp is Saturday 3rd September and will be held at Cheers Bar in the CBD, kick off will be from 11:30 and it normally runs until about 5pm, all in all a great day out and a good laugh played in good spirits with plenty of banter but obviously no idiots, I’ve arranged many of these and they’ve always gone well.
FFDU will have an MC who will also act as the referee for all of the events and the day has a cost of $10 per person but does include your lunch and many great spot prizes throughout the day obviously with a trophy for the winning team.
So why not enter a team and of course bring along plenty of support for what should be a real good day out so please get in touch to ensure your club is on the list to potentially lift the first trophy of the year.

Its a massive afternoon, we have taken part in these many times before and always put in a good showing - we have even won it before but it has been a while, so it would be great to take the trophy out again. WBSA ROUND 12 Apollo v Sharks‏

In Round 12, the Sharks travel to Webb Street, to face the Premiership favorites Apollo.

The last time these teams met in Round 5, Sharks beat the Premiers 3-2 at Shark Park.

Since that game, Sharks have lost some key players due to injury, suspension and relocation.

Sharks started the second round of the Premiership with a loss to Blue Lake, Inter & Centrals last week and were looking to find some form, 3 weeks away from the Elimination Final.

Still without key players, the Sharks were facing a huge challenge.

In the previous senior game, Sharks B Grade scored an emphatic win against the Premiers scoring 2 goals to nil.

First goal scored by Sharks veteran Dino Gentile who cleverly headed the ball over the keeper from a well directed free kick from Craig Wright.

The second goal was scored by August Htoo, who cleverly showed some fancy footwork beat 3 defenders, and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper.

The feeling in the Shark camp was very positive, and it was the true spirit of the Sharks that defeated a polished Premiership side.

Could the A Grade repeat a win against the Premiers with an under strength side who has been struggling recently?

Weather conditions were good, with some isolated showers expected late in the afternoon.

The game summary as follows:

(2min) Apollo indicated their intentions right from the start with an explosive attack which resulted Matt Ripper finding space down the wing, crossed the ball hard and low across the box and found an unmarked Jamie Stephenson who slammed the ball into the back of the net. Score 0-1.

The Sharks camp were totally stunned, but the boys held their heads high and just continued with the uphill battle.

(26min) Matt Weistra was displaying some of his amazing skill on the ball, but was fouled just outside the box about 20 yards out.

Tralongo quickly claims the free kick, and makes no mistake hitting the ball hard and low finding space around the Apollo wall and past the keeper Morris. Score 1-1

(30min) It was Tralongo again who cleverly showed some skill not only to shield the ball away from the defenders, but manages to slip past the defence and the keeper and blast the ball into top left hand of goal. Score 2-1

The game was turning out to be an end to end battle.

Sharks defence of Wright, Pilven and the youngsters Leary & Lamont were able to limit the amount of chances Apollo could get in front of goal by applying pressure forcing turnovers and dispossession.

Sharks pair of Wright & Pilven who previously starred in the B Grade win were continuing on with their brilliant form in the A Grade match.

Pilven keeping his head was proving very quickly that he is a very talented player and was combining well with Wright holding the Sharks defence very strong.

Fuller who has been battling with injuries this year was back at his best. Pulling off some brilliant saves and denying Apollo forwards any goals.

Half Time

Score Sharks lead 2-1

Coach Bruttomesso was more than pleased with the first half performance from his boys.

Even though they conceded a very early goal, they kept the pressure on Apollo forcing them to make unforced errors and losing possession of the ball.

The message at half time was to keep the pressure on and don’t allow them to have easy possession and find space to shoot & make the most of any opportunity in front of goal.

The second half started with 4 yellow cards being issued in the first 10 mins to both teams.

(68min) It was a hatrick for Tralongo again who receives a brilliant through ball from Weistra, manages to break away from Bytheway and slots the ball past a keeper Morris. Score 3-1

(70min) Minutes later, a penalty was awarded to Apollo for an infringement inside the penalty area. Bytheway steps up to take it, and converts easily. Score 3-2

Apollo sensed a comeback and Apollo Coach Derek Ferguson made the first change for the game bringing off his son young Matt Ferguson and replacing him with multi-game winner John Stephenson.

Some excellent runs from Sharks winger Jason Brooks who bought the ball deep into Sharks attacking zone.

Tralongo again receives the ball going forward, manages to evade the defenders, steps past the keeper with an open goal staring at him, he suddenly grabs his leg and drops to the ground with a possible hamstring strain. Score could have easily been 4-2, however he is substituted with his younger brother Chris.

Some excellent football was played from both teams, but it was the Sharks who appeared to hold their nerve and hold out their opponents for the rest of the game.

Sharks running out winners 3-2 in the end showing that the Shark’s fighting spirit is well & truly alive.

A fantastic day for the Sharks, firstly a win in the B Grade against a team that has not lost a game in 2 years.

And the A Grade recording their second win against the Premiership favorites, this time at Apollo’s home ground.

Coaches comments about his players;

Norton Fuller – Showed why he is considered to be the best keeper in the WBSA. Fuller displayed his usual reflex saves and high arial acrobatic saves. His ability to land his kicks in the attacking half consistently is amazing.

Daniel Leary – 15 year old, first year at the Sharks defended very well against the likes of Hodge, Ripper, Stephensons, Panagopolous.

Craig Wright – Solid in defence. He is very quick, can read the game and just appears to pop up all over the place. Covers a lot of ground during the game. Real asset to the Sharks.

Bradley Lamont – Also 15 year old, first year at Sharks and also first year of playing soccer. He plays with no fear. He’s tall, solid in defence and puts his body on the line regardless of the situation.

Corey Pilven – Proved today why he is considered very dangerous once he lets go of his negativity and focuses on the game. Can play in all positions on the park including a back up goal keeper if needed.

Jason Brooks – Very fit and works hard. Gives his opponent a hard time, and makes explosive runs that can cause head aches for the defence. Can cross the ball into the danger zone. Has been a real improver.

Matt Gordon – Current captain, brilliant performer works hard and never gives up. Displays some silky skills and is not afraid to contest the hard balls. Creates plenty of opportunities for his forwards.

Matt Weistra – Also hard working. Plays with a ‘never give up attitude’. Likes to win the ball in the middle, posseses the best foot skills in the competition. Can shoot from distance and also features in many assists in the goals scored by the Sharks.

Mafwata Bope – Only 17 yrs old, recently returned from a broken arm he suffered in Round 2 against Blue Lake. His best game to date. His job was to prevent Panagopolous dominating the game. He certainly did that.

Salva Kasole – Works very hard off the ball, running at speed putting pressure on defenders. Likes to use his fast silky skills. Found himself offside many times through out the game, which is very frustrating for the Coach.

Julian Tralongo – Joined the team at the same time the Sharks lost Okezie Nzeakor who was instrumental in the Sharks defence. With the return of some players, he now becomes the spear head striker the Sharks have been looking for. Scoring a hatrick against the Premiership team shows his capabilities.

In the remainder rounds, the Sharks are at home against the Portland Panthers , and finish with an away game against Millicent in Round 14.

With Tobbei Kennet, Heath Widdison & Ethan Parsons becoming available in the coming weeks, the Sharks Senior team will be at full strength when they will face Centrals in the Elimination Final.

WBSA ROUND 12 PREVIEW

The Round Ball Game of the Week this week sees league leaders Apollo take
on The Sharks at Webb St. home of Apollo Soccer Club. These sides could not be any
further apart on recent form. Apollo have rested players, played good
football and cruised to easy victories. The Sharks on the other hand have
lost a wide range of players due to a wide range of reasons and as a
result have struggled on the park. In last weeks must win fixture against
Gambier Centrals they fell apart in the second half conceding four goals
to a young and more energetic side.
The Sharks are well and truly on the ropes and with only a few fixtures
remaining in what could have been their year it could all fall apart for
John Bruttomesso and his boys.
This week is the litmus test that Bruttomesso would be dreading. In the
first half of the season The Sharks recording a stirring win against
Apollo at home and they sat perched at the top of the table ready to take
the next step, three months later they have dropped off the pace and the
big three have re-established their dominance.
It is not the end of the road for The Sharks if they lose on Sunday,
however with a make or break final against Gambier Centrals less than a
month away a poor performance will see their confidence continue to drop.
the win is not vital a good performance is.
In other games Gambier Centrals should continue their winning ways against
Naracoorte United at home, Inter will rack up another win against an ever
improving Portland outfit and Millicent's poor form looks set to continue
when they host Blue Lake in Millicent on Sunday.

In Round 11 of the Dycer Constructions Premiership, the Lions travel to Shark Park.

Last time these 2 teams met in Round 4, the game ended up in a draw 2-2.

Sharks have had a torrid time with injuries & suspensions, making many players unavailable.

Coach Bruttomesso has had to pick a different squad every week, depending on what players are available to him.

The weather conditions were perfect, the pitch had recovered dramatically from last week.

The game summary as follows:

(15min) Weistra came very close to scoring the first goal, when he found some room inside the 18 yd box, and blasted a shot towards goal, but ex Sharks keeper Wil Bytheway pulled off the save of the day, to deny Sharks the early lead.

It was a pretty even game with both sides looking for a way through, but it was the defenders that stood up and made it hard for the forwards to penetrate.

For the Sharks it was youngsters Lamont & Leary & Widdison who really came of age.

Lamont & Widdison had previously played 2 full games (U17 & BGrade).

Leary played his own age group (U17).

Wright & Tralongo held strong mopping up any loose balls that were in danger of a scoring chance for the Centrals attacking forwards.

At the other end of the park, It was Wehnam, Cutting, Thorne who kept the exciting duo of Salva Kasole & Mafwata Bope from scoring their opportunites as well.

Half Time Score 0-0

(65min) It was Centrals that found the break in the second half, when a basic mistake by the young Sharks keeper allowed the ball to deflect over the goal line off his foot as he was picking the ball up. Score 0-1 Centrals up.

(75 min) A defensive error by the Sharks again gave the lions an easy route to goal, when Tidy held the ball along the back line and found an unmarked target nearly the penalty spot, who slotted the ball past the keeper. Score 0-2

(80min) A penalty was awarded to Centrals when the player was tackled by Leary, which appeared to be outside the box, however referee Jeremy Butler pointed to the spot and awarded the penalty kick which was easily converted. Score 3-0

Coach Bruttomesso made some major changes sending Julian Tralongo & Wright up forward to assist Weistra and the forwards to see if they could reduce the deficit, but Bytheway was having a field day making some great saves.

(88min) A quick counter attack from the lions who finished off the game with their fourth goal.

The final score 0-4

The result was 3 points to Centrals, however Coach Bruttomesso is confident that most of his Senior players would be back & ready to face the Lions again when they meet in the Elimination Final in September.

A Well Timed New Direction for US Soccer

Here is the new US Men's National Team Coach, Jurgen Klinsmann, speaking on ESPN a year ago during the World Cup in South Africa. He focuses on two main points that he thinks would help US Soccer improve on the world stage: 1. involving players of all socio-economic backgrounds and 2. being better technically. We couldn't have said it better ourselves Coach Klinsmann! It comes as no surprise that we at iSoccer are in complete agreement with both of these statements as 1) the iSoccer assessment is freely available to all youth players, and 2) Our mission is to Raise the Level emphasizes technical development.... Time will ultimately tell, but at iSoccer, we believe that this is right (and necessary) direction for US Men's Soccer.

"What I mean with the technical level is the first touch."

"The first touch yesterday was just not there."

From winning only one game in its first three World Cup trips to beating Germany, Sweden, and the United States on its path to becoming World Cup Champions, the Japanese Women's National Team's improvement is nothing short of amazing!

A leading Japanese youth soccer trainer, Tom Byer, has lived in Japan for more than 25 years and has conducted more than 2,000 soccer events for more than 500,000 children. Here are a few excerpts from a recent article he wrote for the NY Times Blog:

"Soccer is a year-round sport where players play 365 days a year, men or women. You can not help but produce good, technically sound players if the content and emphasis is on technical skills."

"Still, not a lot of money or resources are put into the women's game. Compared with some of the world's powerhouse programs such as America or Germany, the difference is staggering."

"Over all the number of girls playing the game has remained flat. So the pool from which to select players is still very small. However, the organization for identifying and the emphasis on training technical skills at a very young age has been the difference."

The takeaway: Focus on being as technically sound as possible so you can execute at any level. You can produce incredible results without spending incredible amounts. Play as much as possible!
