Brian McCormick hits another milestone

Brian McCormick hits another career milestone this Sunday when he plays his 500th senior game for Blue Lake Soccer Club (BLSC).

Brian began playing for Blue Lake in their Under 13 side in the mid 1970's, but as with many country football clubs, there are little or no records of the junior games. He began his way through the senior ranks in the B grade, and then progressed up to A Grade and established himself in that side in 1984.

After 380 A grade games, in 2006 Brian decided to step back to B grade, where he has been ever since.

Uncle Colin McCormick was the person who persuaded Brian to play for Blue Lake. Colin was the trainer at the time. Daughter Jenna & son Bradley are now following in the family tradition, and play in the junior ranks of BLSC.

Brian's loyalty to BLSC is unquestionable and, together with stalwarts Lewis & Sam Ferguson, the friendships and camaraderie is of paramount importance.

Speaking last Sunday, Brian said that he has seen many players come and go within the Western Border Soccer Association competition, but he rates Joe D'Agostino, Tony D'Agostino, Chris Yarnevic and Cameron Craig as some of his toughest opponents. These players played tough, but fairly, and friendships have developed over the years with these former opponents.

He has enjoyed playing alongside some of the greats of BLSC including Sam, Lewis and Derek Ferguson, Kevin Fielding, Norm Murphy, the Sloan brothers in Josh and Xavier, as well as Phil Schultz. In recent times, Blue Lake teammates have included Rob Hanson, Sean Fulton and Michael Davison.

As far as coaches are concerned he learnt most of his skills from Sam Ferguson Snr but has enjoyed being coached by Sam F Ferguson and Dante Pepe in recent years.

Brian continues to perform well on the pitch and as recently as 2008 won the B Grade Best and Fairest, was named in the Team of the year, and elected Players' Player. He has won other Best and Fairest awards over many years, as well as other awards. He represented the Western Border Soccer Association for the first time in 1992, and now is a regular member of the Western Border Masters teams.

He credits his success to lack of injuries, consistent seasons and the support from his family. He is very proud of his children in their various sporting arenas and loves watching them succeed.

Brian's next major goal is to run onto the pitch from his very own clubrooms. BLSC have never had a club house, and is now in the process of building a brand new venue to house the past, present and future of BLSC. Brian should be able to achieve this goal in 2010.

After 500 games, you would think that there isn't much more to achieve. Brian is now putting his time back into the club, and has taken on the challenge of assistant coach of the U12s. Following on from the example set by his Uncle Colin all those years ago, Brian is now one of the people that invites juniors into the ranks of the BLSC.

Lew's Predictions

Round 11 of the Dycer Construction Wester Border Soccer Association promises to be the most interesting so far. League leaders Inter take on the improving Blue Lake who are in fourth spot. Second placed Apollo will shoot it out with third placed Centrals. The Sharks (fourth) host Millicent (fifth) and Naracoorte make the long trip to bottom placed Portland in the battle for the wooden spoon.

In the match of the round Apollo are at home to Centrals and need to win to keep pace with Inter. Apollo won against Blue Lake last week and will be hot favourite to take the points again this week. They are playing well at the moment and have plenty of depth with Gavin Hancock and Marcus Wallace both playing well in the reserves last week. Im sure that Apollo coach Derek Ferguson will spend a lot of time deciding his final line up. So far this year the have beaten each other but since Centrals defeated Apollo in the first game they have lost Bruce Morale for the rest of the season with a calf injury and Cameron Hart to Geelong.
Apollo has slowly gained momentum after the loss to the lions and beat Inter to prove they are the real deal in2009. Centrals still have no Morale, Mitchell Cutting, Peter Robbins, Alex Bissell and last week played without goal keeper Brodey Koop.
Adam Hodge and Stuart Wallace for Apollo will be hard to hold for the Centrals defence and skipper Jesse Wenham and Shane Heemskerk will have their hands full.
The midfield battle between Matt Gordan and Paul Prentis will determine the tempo of the match and the lions will also need to find a way at corners and stoppages to combat the size of Stenner and Odgers. Centrals are a bogey team for Apollo with the lions leading the head to head 4-2 over the last two years and will want to show that there is still some fight down at Bishop Road Apollo to win 3-1.
Inter host Blue Lake and will not take them lightly after just holding on to win 3-2 in their last encounter. Inter have so many avenues to score goals that the Blues defence will need to be at their very best. With Joel Redfern, Christian Cella, Marcus Morony and Adam Osman all scoring regularly it is very hard to see any team holding them scoreless, therefore the only way to defeat them is to outscore them. Blue Lake played well Against Apollo last week but until they can convert the numerous chances that they create they will not beat the big teams. Mitchell Thomson, Tristan Guess, Callum Ferguson and Walter Chatindiara are all capable of scoring goals but when they are up against the big guns they aren’t able to convert the pressure goals. When they can do this they will take a big scalp, for their sake it must be this week as there is no bigger scalp than Inter at home. I won’t be surprised if Blue Lake cause an upset but I am tipping Inter to win 4-2.
Millicent travel to Shark Park and the loser of this game can forget about finishing in the top 4. The Sharks confidence must be at an all time low after getting thumped by Naracoorte 8-2 last week and I do not think that they will bounce back. Their player unavailability has been just one of the problems this year, but there may be other factors either way they will have to turn their form around 180degrees to get at least a point. Millicent had a rare thrashing last week but I am sure that they have the players and commitment to get back into form against the Sharks. Millicent to win 4-1.
Naracoorte make the longest trip in the league going down to the winless Portland. Both teams had good results last week with Naracoorte defeating the Sharks and Portland only just losing to Centrals at Centrals. Portland has been improving slowly and with a home game should be able to field strong teams and not rely on players having to play two or three games. Naracoorte on the other hand may not have a full squad able to make the trip and for that reason I think Portland will be able to have their first win of the year. Portland to win 3-2.

The race isn’t over.‏

Dear scott,

I made a dedication to my mom -
who inspires you?

As the 2009 Tour De France comes to an end, I wanted to say thank you for the overwhelming support I’ve received. While I didn’t win the Tour this year, my return to professional cycling was never about the bike – it was always about improving the lives of the 28 million people around the globe who are living with cancer today.

While I was racing in the tour our movement did just that: We needed to add 30,000 names to the World Cancer Declaration in order to secure a matching donation to fight cancer – and we blew that target away, reaching 85,000 signatures in just a few days!

It’s a big victory, but our ride has only just begun. Starting today, we need to renew our commitment to a world without cancer by building an even stronger movement.

Will you help us by creating a dedication for someone who inspired you to fight cancer and share it with your friends and family? More than 25,000 people have created these powerful personal pages and through them inspired 50,000 people to join our movement. Can you do the same? It only takes a moment:

http://www.livestrongaction.org/node/add/dedication-page

The idea behind the dedication book is simple: I’m asking that you honor someone who has inspired you – a friend, a child, a caregiver – by creating a simple page that can inspire others to add their name to your page and our movement. We'll collect these pages into the world's largest dedication book and deliver them to leaders around the world. By sharing the stories of those who are fighting or have fought this disease and those they have touched, we’ll make a strong case for greater attention and resources focused on the global fight against cancer.

For me, making a dedication was easy – it was for my mom. When I was diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer, my mom was there to listen to me, cheer me on and remind me I wasn’t alone. No one was more invested in my survival. She was my biggest ally and my greatest advocate.

Has someone inspired you? Tell us about them, it only takes a minute and can make a big difference:

Congratulations from The Round Ball - Brian McCormick ‏ 500 Senior Games

Brian will next week, play his 500th senior game for Blue Lake Soccer Club in the match against International Soccer club. He began there in U13’s in the mid 70’s but there are no records of all his junior years. He began his way through the senior ranks in the B grade and then progressed up and established himself in the A grade side in 1984. He played 380 A grade games and in 2006 decided to step back to B grade where he has been ever since. Blues News editor Graeme Peake, has referred to Brian as ‘ one the of the clubs true gentlemen’.

He was originally asked to play for Blue Lake, by his Uncle Colin McCormick who was the trainer at the time. Brian’s loyalty to BLSC is unquestionable and together with stalwarts Lewis & Sam Ferguson, the friendships and camaraderie is of paramount importance. His daughter Jenna & son Bradley play in the Jnr ranks of BLSC and the family element within the club is pivotal.

He has seen many players come and go within the Western Border, but rates Joe D’Agostino, Tony D’Agostino, Chris Yarnevic & Cameron Craig as some of his toughest opponents. He has enjoyed playing alongside some of the greats of BLSC including Sam, Lewis & Derek Ferguson, Kevin Fielding, Norm Murphy, the Sloan brothers in Josh and Xavier, as well as Phil Schultz. More recently players such as Rob Hanson, Sean Fulton and Michael Davison.

As far as coaches are concerned he learnt most of his skills from Sam Ferguson Snr but has enjoyed being coached by Sam F Ferguson, Dante Pepe in recent years.

His commitment to the club as a player, coach, past committee member and parent is undeniably worthy of great recognition and will be celebrated by the club next weekend.

Highlights:
He continues to perform well on the pitch and as recently as season 2008, won the B Grade B& F, was named in the Team of the year and elected Players Player. He has won other B&F over many years as well as other awards. He has represented the WB league for the first time in 1992 and now is a regular member of the Masters WB teams. He is now taking on the challenge of assistant coach of the U12s and is enjoying working with the future players of BLSC.

He credits his success to lack of injuries, consistent seasons and the support from his family. He is very proud of his children in their various sporting arenas and loves watching them succeed. Jenna began her playing career with Blue Lake and whilst playing in the Women’s association, also plays in the Blue Lake U17 team and son Bradley plays in the U12’s. Oldest daughter Alanah, provides a welcome change from soccer as she plays netball and dances.

Brian’s major goal is to run onto the pitch from his very own clubrooms. BLSC have never had a clubrooms and is now in the process of building a brand new venue to house the past, present and future of BLSC. This should happen in 2010. “I would love to continue to participate in future Masters’ teams with my mates and fellow soccer players of this region.”

A Grade match report

In good conditions the match started with both teams determined to get an early goal. Mitchell Thomson went close for Blue Lake but his shot was well saved by Colin Smith but it was Apollo who took the lead in the ninth minute when Matty Ripper hit a low cross which was dummied by Matthew Ferguson with Ash Stenner waiting to drill the ball into the bottom corner. Both backlines were playing well which was making the midfield play a game of patience with build ups being structured and players waiting their chance to break the last line. Apollo could have gone two up when young Matthew Ferguson was put through by Stenner but Andy Armadi pulled off a great save. The young Blues started to get back into the game and some fine play saw three or four good chances go begging with Callum Ferguson, Walter Chatindiara and Thomson all missing chances to score.

Apollo started the second half looking for the sealer and Stenner hit a good shot which was once again saved by Armandi. Both teams were working well in the build ups but the finishing was not to the same quality as the passing. Blue Lake were constantly making good opportunities only to see a combination of good goalkeeping and bad shooting prevent them from equalising, Apollo on the other hand were on top in the midfield but were forced to shoot from distance. With conditions deteriorating Blue Lake looked like they were going to equalise when Ferguson was found clear inside the box only to see his header go wide. Apollo was assured of all points when Hodge picked up a loose ball and hit a beautiful shot into the roof of the net. Blue Lake almost got a consolation goal late in the game but Ferguson was unlucky to see his shot go just wide of the mark.

Final score Apollo 2 Blue Lake 0.

Wanderers 3 d City 1

When City met Wanderers in the first senior match of the round last weekend at Blue Lake Sports Park, each knew that a win would see them into second position on the ladder. Wanderers consist of a strong, quick unit with just one player over the age of 20, whilst City’s balanced, experienced side display an excellent understanding on field. Kimberley Gilbert’s work rate for City kept the pressure on Wanderers from the midfield however excellent defensive tactics from Wanderers forced turnovers which were quickly turned to full blown attack against City’s goalmouth. Lauren Lowe in goals performed exceptionally well, coming off her line and saving what looked to be certain goals. With many of the Wanderers’ team capable of powerful strikes, it was just a matter of time before forwards were able to capitalise. With a 1-0 lead to Wanderers at half time, they confidently returned to the park. Eme Ripper held her position well, as did Steph Pahl who worked tirelessly for her team as always. With City taking the honours in the first round of the season, Wanderers were thrilled to claim the points at the final whistle.

Goal scorers - City 1 (J Smith)
- Wanderers 3 (K Seiler, K Saffin, J Kember)

United 2 d County 1

The clash of the sister clubs is always a tough, evenly match contest with the last three meetings ending in draws. County settled quickly and surged into the United half in waves, crossing the ball into dangerous territory. With United defence holding strong and ‘keeper Zena Reiner clearing the ball well, it was up to the hard running of midfielders to work the ball up the park, with some searching long balls driven for forwards to run on to. Once again, the County off-side trap worked perfectly on several occasions catching the runners off guard. However, the speed of Jess Martin-Brown worked to United’s advantage as she found the back of the net during the first half. Undeterred County regrouped and capitalised soon after whilst United’s backline were still settling after a change of personnel. Even though the score was deadlocked at the break, both sides felt the game was there for the taking. Sarah Osborne was vocal in the midfield, rallying her County team-mates in a last ditch effort however once United scored again it seemed to take the wind out of County sails and United’s confidence grew, forcing several diving saves towards the end of the match. It proved to be another close contest with United just remaining in front during the second half to take the win.

Goal scorers - United 2 (J Martin-Brown 2)
- County 1 (C Dow)

Palace 11 d Millicent 0

With the return of several key players to the Palace lineup, it was always going to be difficult for Millicent facing the top side. Although a predominantly youthful side, Palace boasts an enormous pool of experience and talent and this was pitted against the newcomers of Millicent last weekend. Palace picked up the pace from recent weeks and came out firing quickly scoring 4 goals in the first half. Jakarra Hill showed she has lost none of her urgency on the ball and teamed well with Kale Pedlar to find gaps in the Millicent defence. Despite the growing scoreline, the Millicent goal keeper played well thwarting several well placed attempts at goal. Lily Zurlino for Millicent was forced to work hard and lifted her tempo accordingly, however as the game wore on, Palace sustained their attacks, tiring Millicent opponents and continuing their goal scoring.

Goal scorers - Palace 11 (J Hill 4, T Andrews, J McCormick, K Pedlar 2, G Tentye)

Portland 3 d Villa 0

Villa took to the road after junior matches to meet Portland at home. Portland have proved formidable in recent times, forcing several draws and claiming points in tight matches. With a side containing seven junior players, Villa were aware that weary legs would play a part in this match but were optimistic taking to the park. Three goals in the first half saw Portland take the ascendency thanks to the strong passing of Bohdeen Gerritsen and Zoe Scott. Villa’s Kahlie Trapolino took the goal keeping gloves in the second half and was able to keep a clean sheet, while having Beth Harris return to the park provided positive options. With the final score of 3-0, both sides were content at the end of the match with Portland happy to claim victory and Villa pleased with their efforts on the day.

Goal scorers - Portland (K Kilgour 2, L Santucci)

Under 14s

Wanderers 6 d City 0

Wanderers have hit their straps at the right end of the season, displaying quality passing and attacking running plays. City defenders were forced to work hard from the outset with Emily Birch working well and covering a lot of ground to direct the ball away from goals. Jane Ferguson has proved a find for Wanderers this season, reading the play and working effectively with team mates. Jasmine White was able to connect a perfectly timed cross with her left foot to score strongly in the first half for Wanderers. Sheridan Lock fought hard to win the ball for City and strived to send the ball into attack. Three goals scored in each half, saw Wanderers retain their second spot on the ladder.

Goal scorers - Wanderers 6 (P Ackland, H Philp 2, K Lehmann, J White)

Villa 10 d County 0

Once again, experience came to the fore when Villa met County last Saturday. On the sidelines, spectators were commenting on the improvement of County youngsters in their passing and tackling abilities. In particular, Taylah Cella has matured in her defensive role, confidently clearing long balls from danger. Louisa Green in goals is emerging as an excellent reflex-save keeper denying several close range shots but the large goals proved difficult to defend. However, these developing skills were no match for the balanced, skilful Villa youngsters who possess multiple goalscorers each week. Kelsey Reade and part-time goalkeeper Jacinda Wood made the card this time each claiming a couple.

Goal scorers - Villa (M Ianella 10, M Atwell 3, K Reade, J Wood 2, R Bennett)

The Junior Development Squad returned last weekend after a holiday break, with two evenly matched teams facing off. It becoming apparent that these girls will be the stars of SEWFA in a few years time, with many former JDS members now competing in the Under 14 and senior competitions. As skills and match awareness develop, JDS games are proving to be an excellent grounding for the girls, with their well supported matches played at 1pm.

Next week Wanderers meet United at 1.30pm in the first senior match, followed by County v Millicent and Villa v Palace. Portland remain at home and will host City. In the junior fixtures, City will play Palace and County take to the park with Wanderers.

Centrals coach steps down

Leading Western Border Soccer Association club, Centrals will take to the pitch against Portland this week under the guidance of its president following the resignation of senior coach Phil Muller.

Muller approached Centrals president Mr Shane Dycer on Tuesday morning to deliver the news, regrettably giving up the position due to increasing work commitments.
Mr Dycer said Muller came to him and asked him to take over the role for the remainder of the season.

Now mid way through the roster, Mr Dycer said it would have been too hard to look for a new coach so he agreed to take the reigns and serve his fifth term for the club.

“A top four finish will be the major focus for the rest of the year, we have probably blown our chance at a premiership with last week’s loss.

“I have a few things I want to implement for the rest of the season which will include building up our young blokes.”

Muller (45) was appointed coach of Centrals last December and had the team in good form this season, despite last Saturday’s 0 – 5 loss to top team International.

Centrals are currently third on the premiership table with six wins, two losses and a draw.

Muller is a four time premiership player with Centrals and won the A grade best and fairest seven times.

He is also a past winner of the Western Border Soccer Association’s best and fairest award.

But Centrals performance in the Shadows-Belgiorno Cup was not quite as impressive.

Starting as the defending champions, Centrals failed to reach the semi-finals of the popular mid-season tournament.

Mr Dycer said injuries to key players had given several young players the opportunity to play senior football.

Mr Dycer said there were positive signs for the future of the club with the reserves playing strongly and all three junior sides travelling well.

Mr Dycer began playing for Centrals in 1982 and has been club president for the past eight years and coached the senior side from 2004 – 06 and then again in 2008.

He stepped down from the role this season due to work and family commitments.

During his time at the helm, Mr Dycer led the club to several pre-season titles and strong finishes, including runner-up in the four seasons he coached.

Muller will continue his involvement with the club as a life member and will continue to strap the boots on in the reserves.

Your Week in Football
The week's most ridiculous news yarn is a tight contest. Could Maradona, whose early coaching results have involved presiding over Argentina's biggest loss in over half a century, be looking to take over the reigns at EPL side Portsmouth? You could have been forgiven for laughing off such speculation. "Ha, Maradona at Portsmouth. Next you'll be telling me Sven Goran Eriksson is joining Notts County". Well quite.

You might think Con Constantine and Clive Palmer are pretty adventurous and "out there" kind of guys to run a football club. However AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi puts those pussycats (and a few NRL players) to shame with his antics.

In local news, someone once told me that "boasting is a sign of insecurity". I can't remember who said it, some loser presumably. With that in mind it is worth mentioning that our podcast, FourFourTwo Insider, is now Australia's (but including all the world's podcasts) number one sports podcast on iTunes. Have. That. Don't think for one minute you're popular enough to be different, so if you haven't downloaded it already, do it now.

Phil Muller Stands Down As Head Coach

Phil Muller has stood down as head senior coach as of Tuesday 21st July 2009. Work and time commitments are a major factor in his decision as his new job role is demanding on his time. Phil will continue playing in the B Grade and still be around the club in all other capacities. Club President Shane Dycer would like to personally thank Phil for his efforts over the last nine months and hopes ro see him back in a coaching role in the future. Shane will take over the coaching role for the remainder of the season, with Adrian Koop as his assistant. The club will begin to search for a head coach for the 2010 season.

Lew's Predictions

Round 10 in the Dycer Construction Soccer Premiership pits Blue Lake against Apollo, Inter travel to Millicent, Centrals host Portland while Naracoorte face the Sharks.

In the match of the round Apollo will travel to Malseed park knowing that the last time the two met here ended in a two all draw and a similar result this time will cost it dearly in it’s quest for the premiership. Blue Lake has been going along nicely over the last two months and is really looking forward to this game. The Blues should be at full strength this week with goalkeeper Andy Armandi finally overcoming a hand injury. Coach Sam Ferguson has them playing very committed soccer. Their back four have been very good this year ably led by Blair Branstone, the midfield is as good as any on its day and with Ferguson and Thomson in great scoring touch this is a great opportunity to get a big scalp. This year Blue Lake has drawn with both Centrals and Apollo, but is yet to take that next step by actually beating one of the top three. This may be their best chance of doing so. Apollo would believe that they are a great chance of taking out the Premiership and that they need to win these games to stay in touch with Inter until their next meeting. They have a good young side with Matty Ripper, Chris Bytheway and Marcus Wallis and when you add in the experience of Paul Prentice, Adam Hodge and Luke Odgers they are a formidable opponent. Derek Ferguson has been pushing the team to stay focussed, knowing that consistency is the key to their success. I sat on the fence with my prediction the last time they met and will do so again 2-2 draw.

Millicent is another side which has pushed the big teams but are not able to take full points. Both times that they have played Inter they have been in winning positions only to concede goals late in the game. They rely too much on too few with the likes of Matt Gregetic, Cameron Saint and Brett Dibley being prominent. Inter on the other hand have strengths all over the park and have been able to rest some of their players in an effort to keep them in top shape at the business end of the season. Christian Cella is in brilliant form of late and must be stopped. The problem is stop him and there is Joel Redfern, Adam Osman Dante Bonner and Co to step up. Although Millicent has troubled them in the past I think Inter will win 4-1.

Centrals will hope to get back on track this week when it comes up against struggling Portland. It has been turmoil at Centrals in the last 6 days with them losing 5-0 to Inter on Sunday and then having their senior coach Phil Muller resign. Shane Dycer takes over and is assisted by Adrian Koop and Bruce Morale. Shane has previously coached Centrals in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008 so he knows what is required, the question is can he change the fortunes around. They have had their problems with injury however they are starting to get some good players back, but a lot depends on whether Bruce Morale is fit. He struggled last week and it would be unlikely that he plays this week. Portland is still without a win this season and I cannot see that changing this week. They do not travel well and do not always have a full team available; therefore I can’t see them being able to hold Centrals Centrals to win 6-0

The final game is Naracoorte at home to the Sharks. The Sharks have dropped down to 6th in recent weeks and they will need to improve dramatically to have any chance of getting back into top 4 contention. They are playing inconsistently and rarely have the same team from one week to another. If they can take close to their best team to Naracoorte then they should get back on the winning list. Naracoorte at home should be able to push the Sharks all the way if they are able to get their best 11 together, as they have also been hampered by injury and unavailability. Not knowing who will have the most players available makes it hard to predict an outcome, however I will tip the Sharks to win 3-2

Superstar super-ready

Luke Pilkington may be Australia's Football Superstar, but the 19-year-old is under no illusions just how hard to will be to break into Melbourne Victory's Hyundai A-League team this season.
Pilkington won the TV competition and as a result earned a contract with Melbourne's Youth League squad as well as a scholarship at Monash University, where he'll be studying sports science. But his dream of playing A-League football will have to wait, with Melbourne very much the same team which swept all before it to take the Premiership and Championship last season.
Coach Ernie Merrick rates Pilkington very highly, but believes that he still has plenty of development left. While he will play in a closed trial match against Green Gully this week, Merrick thinks an A-League debut is at least a few months away.
"I think Luke is a very worthy winner of Football Superstar. Not only is he a good footballer technically, but he's an outstanding character. We're extremely happy to have him along," Merrick said.
"I'm not going to put him under pressure by saying he'll play in our first game on August 6 against the Mariners. Luke is also the type of player that we like at Victory, technically. He's a left footer, he's quick, he can play comfortably in midfield or in a left back position. We like that versatility," he said.
"Maybe middle of the season, there might be an opportunity for him. But I have to say that the way our squad is shaping up, it's going to be a very tough team to break into."
Pilkington admits his head is still spinning after the past three months, where he has gone from captaining the ANU senior team in the ACT to training with the A-League's benchmark side.
"It's been crazy. After the show finished, I went back to Canberra and trained hard. I've just been trying to live normally. It's an honour coming down to Melbourne and very grateful for the opportunity," he said.
"Two years ago, I was playing for a team called Woden Valley, I didn't have much direction going on. Of course I wanted to progress further into the A-League or overseas. With this opportunity coming up, it's finally seeing my dream come true."
Merrick had the final choice of which player would with the competition, which was screened on FOX8. He admitted that his choice was as much to do with Luke's potential and attitude as the talent he displayed on the program.
"There's no doubt our club has profiles of the type of players that we want. Versatility, being one, technically gifted being another, good game awareness and physically very capable. But we also place a great of value on behavioural aspects and respectful characters and good personalities. He really fitted the bill very well," Merrick said.
"In the end the decision was pretty straight forward. Luke was one of the younger ones as well, which gives him a couple of years should he need it in the Youth League. But I suspect he is going to be promoted fairly quickly the way he's going."
Pilkington believes his ability to adapt to different playing positions will be crucial to the speed in which he gets on the radar for first team selection.
"Ernie has said the whole time that he likes versatile players and players these days aren't able to stick to one position. So, I'll try different positions and give my all to impress."

A GRADE MATCH REPORT.

The Sharks took on Blue Lake at Shark park trying to regain fourth spot on the ladder after last weeks loss to Centrals. Blue Lake had the strong wind advantage in the first half and it took only three minutes to open their account. A mix up in the Sharks box allowed Callum Ferguson to slam home from close range. The Blues were doing most of the attacking with the Sharks having to shoot from a long way out. The Blues got their second after good work by Walter Chatindiara who somehow got the ball to Ferguson who calmly slotted home again. Will Bytheway in the Sharks goal was in good form preventing a blow out. The Sharks started to get some passing going and had a couple of chances to Jon Stemberger and then Wayne Lennon who headed over. Ferguson was running riot in the midfield and when he found Tristan Guess in the clear it was 3-0. Ferguson then was given a penalty but could only hit the post; however he soon he made up for his miss and claimed his hat trick before half time with a neat finish.

The Sharks came out with the wind at their backs and with Lance DaRocha, Wayne Lennon and Matty Weistra starting to come into the game they had hope of a comeback, and when Scott Murray scored from a Da Rocha free kick they had their tails up Blue Lake had other ideas and when Justin McRostie found Mitch Thomson free he calmly chipped the keeper to give them a 4 goal buffer again. Weistra was making good runs but the Blues defence was forcing him to shoot from a distance which he couldn’t beat Vic Bentvelzen. Jon Stemberger was awarded a penalty after a goal mouth infringement which he duly converted. Soon after Ferguson got his 4th for the day when a long Thomson throw found him unmarked in the 18 yard box. Bentvelzen pulled off a great save from a well struck Lennon free kick. The Sharks got a final goal late in the game when a fumble in the box allowed substitute Jay Byrne to put home an easy tap in.
Best players – Blue Lake: K Reiner, C Ferguson, J McRostie
Sharks: L Da Rocha, W Lennon, M Weistra

Your Week in Football
This week Gold Coast have been involved in a war of words with the FFA over the release of rising star Tahj Minniecon for a Young Socceroos game that takes place just before the A-League season starts. In unrelated news, Gold Coast have stated that Minniecon is suffering from the swine flu virus and has been quarantined until further notice. Possibly until just before the A-League kicks off against rivals Brisbane Roar on the 8 August. We've also had a series of humbling pre-season friendlies against far superior EPL outfits, Robbie Fowler doing what he used to do best - score, while Manchester City managed to continue their recruitment of the best players (who value money over personal pride) in the world. That's not all of them surprisingly enough.

Round 10 of the South East Women's Football Association competition continued on from Round 9, where many juniors were called up to replace more senior players.
In the Seniors, Palace, Wanderers and City all had wins, with Millicent and Portland playing out a nil all draw, while in the Under 14s Villa continued to dominated at the top of the ladder, while Wanderers had a good win over Palace.
Seniors
Palace v County
Once again, Palace had to rely on its Under 14 side to bolster the ranks, with the inclusion of five juniors. The inclusion of Imogen Pratt proved to be a fine choice, with the youngster claiming two goals in the first half, including a fine finish from a deflection.
Stung into action by these early goals, County lifted considerably, chasing any stray ball and diverting it from possible goalscoring opportunities.
Palace defence was under pressure from the tenacity of Tania Widdison and Sharni Leggett but were comfortable in winning the ball and sending it towards their own goal. Kate Stewart made a welcome return to Palace, showing she has lost little of her touch despite being out of the game for over a year.
Even with the absence of several key players, County played the remainder of the match with fierce determination but could not finish in front of goal.
Final score: Palace 2 (I Pratt 2) d County 0
Wanderers v Villa
In wet and windy conditions, Villa met Wanderers for the first time this season.
Playing one of the top three teams is always a tough assignment and Villa rose to the challenge, limiting Wanderers to a 2 goal lead at half time. With captain Jenna Nunan taking charge from the backline and Bianca Johncock making dangerous runs, it looked several times as though Villa may break through but Wanderers were equally determined not to concede.
The return of injury prone Leonie McCallum to the Wanderers' lineup strengthened the side and Keisha Seiler was in fine form, breaking quickly and striking well from distance.
Final score: Wanderers 5 (K Seiler 4, E Ripper) d Villa 0
City v United
With several key players restored to their starting lineup, City set out to re-establish their dominance on the park.
United were stunned when losing the ball shortly after kick off, Kirby Maczkowiack was able to capitalise and score within the first minute of play. Quickly followed by two penalties, City took a comfortable lead.
Alison Cutting and Maddie Ryan proved effective for United in defence, cleanly winning the ball and sending it down the line for attackers to pounce on. At the other end of the park, Eleni Kourmouzis took control in her defensive line, consistently winning the ball and distributing efficiently, thwarting any United attempt on goal.
United used the strong breeze effectively in the second half, and on a break were able to slot one home. A late goal for City saw them resume their winning ways.
Final score: City 4 (K Mackowiack, L Birch, S Ielasi, J Smith) d United 1 (P Edmonds)
Millicent v Portland
Millicent have recently shown a marked improvement defensively, conceding few goals in recent matches and are improving each week in front of goal.
Sitting fourth on the table, with some good results behind them, Portland would have made the trip feeling fairly confident of 3 points but the blustery conditions made settling into their playing style difficult. Portland's mother/daughter combination of Donna and Katelyn Kilgour has proved effective this year, with both making the scorecard.
However, Maria Montouri played strongly in defence, making it impossible for Portland forwards to find a way past. Wanita Robinson was making plenty of runs up front for Millicent but failed to convert.
Final score: Millicent 0 drew with Portland 0
Under 14s
Villa v City
Villa's depleted side from last week was strengthened by the return of goal scorer Makayla Atwell and a balanced defence.
Keen to make up for their defeat, Villa wasted little time in finding their form and scored early to take the lead. The link between defence and attack was evident with midfielders working hard to win and distribute the ball effectively, putting City defence under intense pressure.
City had their chances, including a quick break from Erin Ireland but Villa goalkeeper Jacinda Wood was able to keep a clean sheet. Eirene Couzens showed flair along the wing, winning the ball and pushing forward several times.
The match belonged to Villa, with 4 goals scored in each half.
Final score: Villa 8 (M Atwell 3, K Reade 2, M Ianella 2, J Donaldson) d City 0
Wanderers v Palace
No more than two goals have separated these teams this season and it promised to be a closely contested match from the outset.
Despite numerous early attacks, Palace were able to defend against the skilled Wanderers lineup. Ashlae Pilven was keen to claim an early goal for Palace but was denied by excellent goalkeeping by Elizabeth Thatcher.
Wanderers edged in front before the break courtesy of a Paris Ackland strike and took a one goal buffer into the second half. Strong winds made playing conditions difficult for the youngsters but determination was evident for both teams, each desperately seeking to score.
Mel Wilmot was able to make powerful inroads into Wanderers' territory but could not find a way through.
Final score: Wanderers 1 (P Ackland) d Palace 0

Lew's Predictions

Round 8 of Western Border Soccer did not provide any upsets which leaves Inter on top from Apollo and Centrals with Blue Lake moving into fourth spot with a good win against Portland.
Round 9 will be an interesting round with league leaders Inter at home to third placed Centrals, Sharks take on Blue Lake at home. Apollo host Naracoorte and Millicent travel to Portland.
In the match of the round at Cassadio Park the pressure will be on Centrals, a loss will see them fall five points behind Inter and three points behind Apollo. With a lower percentage than both of these teams it could signal the end of their Premiership aspirations. This would be devastating after being bundled out of the cup two weeks ago. Centrals have been decimated by injury in the last few weeks but should welcome back Shane Heemskerk, Bryan Lindsay, Peter Robbins and Daniel Mitchell. An injury cloud still hangs over their goal scoring forward Bruce Morale who will need to train strongly Friday to be considered. Inter Coach Tony D’Agostino knows that this will be a hard game and welcomes back tough defender Robbie Manfrin and Ricky McRobert. He will need to watch Nathan Tidy up front and both Tobei Kennett and Ryan Tobin in the midfield. Jesse Wenham will have to marshall the troops strongly at the back if they are going to hold the Inter forwards. Christian Cella, Marcus Morony and Joel Redfern are all in fine goal scoring form and I don’t think that Centrals will be able to hold them for an entire game and unless Bruce Morale plays Nathan Tidy will find it hard playing a lone hand up front. Although Inter have won seven of the last ten against Centrals, all of Centrals wins have been at Cassadio Park. Phil Muller will have his boys fired up for this game and although a hard one to call I lean towards Inter simply because they look more dangerous up front, but one thing is for sure, it will be a very physical encounter with both teams willing to put their bodies on the line to get an advantage. Inter to win 4-2.
As the battle to maintain fourth spot hots up the Sharks take on Blue Lake. Blue Lake took fourth spot last week from the Sharks and will be desperate to not just keep it but look towards third spot if Centrals slip up. The Sharks continue to struggle to get a team on the Park and unbelievably only had 10 players last week against Centrals. With the likes of Dino Gentile, Pramot Goldsworthy, Terry Stevenson and Craig Wright all missing it is hard to see them match it with the in form Blues. Blue Lake has only lost one game of the last seven and will be keen to stretch that record. Although missing come key players in the last few weeks they have still managed to get good results. The Sharks still have some very good players getting around with Lance Da Rocha, Matty Weistra Wayne Lennon and Heath Widdison all striving to keep them competitive but with Mitch Thomson, Callum Ferguson, Bryce Strachan and Justin McRostie in midfield I can’t see the Sharks holding them. John and Damo Stemberger are the keys to the Sharks scoring goals but Blue Lake welcome Kyle Reiner back to strengthen up the Blues defence and this defence has only conceded 3 goals in 5 games. Blue Lake to win 4-1.
Apollo host Naracoorte and I think that Apollo coach Derek Ferguson will be hoping to get through this game unscathed injury wise. Apollo will be too strong all over the park and may be able to improve on the goal percentage. Naracoorte have certainly been up and down this year and I think the trip to Apollo will be too much for them. Even with a full side they won’t be able to stop the potent forward line led by Adam Hodge. With Paul Prentice and Ash Stenner continually feeding the young forwards Apollo should run out comfortable winners
7-0.
The last match of the round sees Millicent make the long trip to Portland needing a win to stay in touch with the Sharks and Blue Lake. Millicent have had injury problems of late and if they can send a full squad they should come away with three points but they would be unwise to take Portland lightly. Portland has some very good players and they are due to string a good game together. Bryan Fitzgerald is unavailable but they have the luxury of being able to play their under 17 players in A grade fresh as Millicent do not have under 17s. Portland coach Craig Taylor will have this game pencilled in as winnable and with the home ground advantage it should be an even contest in the muddy conditions. I am tipping a 2 all draw.

Tour de France: I need your help!‏

Dear scott,
I returned to cycling this year for one reason: to fight for the 28 million people affected by cancer worldwide. We are making tremendous progress in this fight, but there’s still so much to be done. By next year cancer will be the #1 killer in the world and yet most of the world’s leaders lack any real plan to fight back.During my 20-day ride in the Tour I'm calling on leaders around the world to make major commitments to fight cancer worldwide – but I can’t do it alone. As a first step, will you join me and sign the World Cancer Declaration – a major global push to pressure the world's leaders to act now on cancer? http://livestrongaction.org/campaigns/commit-fight-cancer
As an added incentive, a donor has pledged to give $30,000 if we can collect 30,000 signatures before the end of the Tour.
I'll send these signatures to world leaders after the Tour de France and pressure them to make cancer a priority in their own countries. It’s our best chance to push for better treatment, more funding for cancer research and access to care for everyone around the world.Without your commitment, these leaders won’t pay attention. Will you sign the declaration then ask your friends and family to do the same?
http://livestrongaction.org/campaigns/commit-fight-cancer
When you sign the declaration, you'll be able to dedicate that action to a cancer survivor or caregiver who has inspired you. I dedicated my signature to my mom, who stuck by me – and fought alongside me – throughout my cancer fight. Who will you dedicate yours to?We’ll be keeping you updated on our progress over the coming weeks – meanwhile, join me at LIVESTRONG Action and make your commitment now:

SEWFA So Good

There was just one SEWFA match held at Blue Lake Sports Park last Saturday. With no senior matches scheduled and County juniors forfeiting their match against City, it was left to the Under 14s of Palace and Villa to take to the park.

Palace 3 defeated Villa 1
In dismal conditions, Palace were determined to throw everything into this match and were rewarded for their efforts, managing to contain Villa’s forwards who have proved extremely accurate in front of goals this season. Palace took a 1 goal lead into the break and secured another well worked goal in the second half to take a 3-1 victory, making them the first team to take points away from the league leaders.
Goal scorers: Palace 3 (A Pilven, S McCarthy, E McClintock)
Villa 1 (M Ianella)

This week sees the full complement of teams make their way back to the park. The senior matches commence with Palace v County at 1.30pm, with City meeting United and Wanderers taking on Villa at 3pm. Millicent will remain at home and host Portland.

In junior fixtures Palace play Wanderers and City meet Villa at 12 noon, with County having the bye.

ROUND BALL ON THE ROAD - Gold Coast United v Fulham

WBSA Results Round 8

Sunday, 12 July 2009 18:20
Results of Western Border Soccer Association Round 8 matches played on Sunday 12 July 2009:
Gambier City Sharks 2-6 Gambier Centrals
Naracoorte United 0-11 International
Millicent United 0-2 Apollo
Portland 1-8 Blue Lake
The start of the second round of the WBSA Premership saw the reigning premiers International travel to Naracoorte for their second encounter in the past 2 weeks.
Inter was almost back to full strength, while Naracoorte welcomed back Kevin Marshall to their line up.
The Naracoorte defence were kept busy early on, trying desperately not to concede early, and keep a respectful score.
It didn't take long however, for the powerful Inter team to get the scoring going, and from a great through ball from Christian Cella, which found Dave Galloway running towards goal, and with his clever touch he beat the advancing goalkeeper and scored the first goal at the 5 minute mark. Adam Osman made it 2 - 0 after 10 minutes when he scored his first for the game, and a big score line was imminent.
To Naracoorte's credit, they dug deep and withstood the mounting pressure, and with some fine saves by their goalkeeper, kept the scoring down.
Joel Redfern was unlucky not to score when his powerful shot rebounded off the crossbar, and seemed to cross the line, but the referee did not award the goal.
Near the end of the first Half, Captain Dante Bonner scored 2 goals in two minutes, the first when he found himself free on the edge of the goal square, and fired home. This was followed up a minute later with another, to give International a comfortable 4 - 0 lead at half time.
Naracoorte were pleased with the efforts at holding out, but were not creating many opportunities for themselves.
Naracoorte had no answer in the second period for the hard running of Joel Redfern, Christian Cella and Dante Bonner, who were creating havoc for the Naracoorte defence, and providing many chances for the Inter forwards of Barry McCoy, Marcus Morony and Dave Galloway.
Joel Redfern continued his fantastic goalscoring run this year, when he demonstrated all his class to score his first goal at the start of the second half.
From the 23rd minute mark, Christian Cella took control of the game and took his own performance to a new level. The Naracoorte team had no answer for his superb display, proving he was back to full fitness, which saw him score his first of a hat trick in a 15-minute spell. Redfern put a blistering through ball to Cella who clinically finished with a well placed shot into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.
Adam Osman never stopped running at the Naracoorte players, and they found it more and more difficult to contain him as the match progressed. Osman scored his second for the game as well, when he finished off from a pass by Chris Williams, and giving his team a healthy 7 nil lead.
Christian Cella scored his second when from an inch perfect pass by Adam Osman, he blasted a powerful shot passed the helpless Naracoorte Keeper.
Marcus Morony was desperately unlucky not to open his account for the game, when his individual run saw him not only beat the Naracoorte defence, but rounded the goalkeeper, but from an acute angle could only hit the post, which rebounded for Joel Redfern to tap in for his second goal for the game.
Morony did finally get on the score board, when he scored his team's 10th for the game, and the scoring ended for the day, when Man of the Match Christian Cella scored his third. Adam Osman again was credited with the assist, when he drilled a low pass towards the back post for Cella to run onto, and from an impossible angle, Cella made it look to easy, scoring and giving Inter a comfortable 11 nil win.

Blue Lake have a convincing win over Portland on a muddy Portland pitch to go fourth on the WBSA Premership table.
In ordinary conditions Blue Lake showed their desire by creating two very good chances in the first five minutes. Both of them fell to Guess who was very unlucky not to have scored at least once.
The Blues slick passing on the muddy pitch was causing all sorts of problems for the Portland midfield and defence. Strachan almost opened the account when he latched onto a flick on from Ferguson but the shot went wide. Minutes later Braebairn hit the bar after a terrific solo run.
Blue Lake finally got the break through when Loosz hit a fierce low cross into the box which deflected off a Portland defender and into the back of the net.
Portland Coach Taylor was desperately trying to lift his team and was ably supported by Hatten at sweeper. Linck and Fitzgerald were also starting to get a bit more of the ball. Atoairesei was causing a few problems for the Blues defence and when an error was made he pounced on it and slipped it past Bentvelzen in goals.
This gave hope to the Portland team, but Blue Lake took control of the match from here, dominating with Strachan, Ferguson and McRostie winning everything in midfield. There were a few half chances to the Blues but they couldn't find a way past Arthurs in goals.
A chance went to Ferguson who hit a twenty yard free kick which smacked into the crossbar. It was only a matter of time before The Blues would score and it was Thomson who delivered, with two goals in the last 10 minutes of the half. His first was a simple put away after good work by Guess and the second was a tremendous shot from a very acute angle.
The second half started much the same as the first half with the Blues winning most positions. Portland were working very hard and were defending well but couldn't stop Ferguson when he made a mockery of the muddy conditions to dance around three defenders to slot the ball home.
The rain came to make matters even worse but the Blues were rampant now and a nice cross across the 18 yard box found the Blues Captain Strachan who headed home. Another mix up from a Guess cross gave the Blues their 6th goal and a second own goal to Portland.
Portland were still mounting attacks and on one of these Bentvelzen was deemed to have infringed on Atoairesei and the referee awarded a penalty to Portland, but it wasn't to be their day when Bentvelzen made a fine save.
Thomson secured his hat trick when a pin point cross from Guess found him in the clear to head a delicate goal over the outstretched arms of Arthurs. Guess finally got rewarded for his tireless running when he outran the Portland defence and tucked away a fine goal to finish the match at 8-1 for Blue Lake.
