County 1 d Millicent 0
Buoyed from its victory last week and intent on improving the draw during the first round, County welcomed back several key players and looked to make its mark on the game early. In spite of this, Millicent were able to contain the runs forward of Tania Widdison and Jess Feast, with Wanita Robinson dropping into the back line. An own goal from Millicent gave County the edge they had been seeking and they took this advantage into the break. County used its height advantage in an effort to increase the lead, however Millicent’s defence marshalled by Maria Montuori stayed firm. At the final whistle, County were overjoyed to take the win and subsequently fourth spot on the ladder.

City 11 d Villa 0
The City juggernaut continued its winning form on Saturday against Villa. Despite enormous efforts from the maroons, they were soon overwhelmed by City’s attack on goal. Melanie Wilmot played very well defensively for Villa, a fact belied by the growing scoreline. Jen Smith and Tania Grant controlled the midfield, building play around them and bringing others into the game. Aimee Beck was heroic in her efforts for Villa, however a 6 goal lead at the break proved impossible for Villa to overcome. Weariness played a factor for Villa during the second half, and City capitalised making full use of its bench to claim 5 more after the break.
Goal scorers: City - L Birch 3, J Smith 2, K Maczkowiack 2, M Thompson, K Henriksen 1, T Kourmouzis, T Grant
Wanderers 8 d United 1
From the first whistle, the teenage team of Wanderers pressed forward putting immediate pressure on United’s defence. With usual central defenders absent, Tanya Frost and Kylie Durbidge stepped in to fill the roles admirably. Wanderers were able to get three past United in the first half including a curving corner from captain Leonie McCallum. McCallum’s uncanny ability to read the play and position herself well frustrated the United faithful and tore apart their midfield. Eme Ripper defended with strength for Wanderers and thwarted many attacks on goal, however United were able to snag a consolation goal in the final minutes of the match.
Goal scorers: Wanderers - K Jenz-Walker 6, K Saffin, L McCallum United - K Seiler
Palace 4 d Portland 1
With several senior players unavailable, Palace headed to Portland very wary of a repeat from last year’s road trip, where it scraped by with a draw. Juniors helped to fill the void but the side was still undermanned when it hit the park. Palace defender Tori Koop’s game lifted and she played exceptionally well under pressure. A solitary goal took Palace into the break and when Portland scored early in the second half, it looked to be déjà vu for the visitors. However, Palace sparked again and although Jade Cockerill in goals for Portland played well, there was little she could do to stem the Palace tide. Donna Kilgour made a welcome return to her home side which strengthened the back line but could not contain Gabby Tentye who is regularly finding the back of the net this year.
Goal scorers: Palace - J McCormick 2, G Tentye 2 Portland - K Kilgour

County 3 d Millicent 2
Millicent was forced to forfeit to County in the first game of the season and both sides entered this match with the view of success. The more experienced County looked strong on the ball and pushed forward during the first half exploiting the space in front of them, as some of the younger Millicent players played County on side. Millicent sweeper Kathleen Woods was imposing, clearing the ball from attack on several occasions. In a position shift from last year, Taylah Cella appeared to be enjoying her attacking role for County and finished well. Fresh from SAPSASA duties, April Hockey looked calm in defence, winning the ball cleanly under pressure and passing to team mates. With a 3-0 County lead at half time, it was an excited side that took to the pitch for the second half however Millicent again showed its “never say die” attitude and were able to peg back 2 of their own courtesy of Adele Cooper. County were able to hang on to their lead and were thrilled to record a victory.

Palace 1 d City 0
City claimed a convincing win during the first round of the season however that did not daunt a determined Palace side. City looked to have the early momentum of the game with running attacks at the Palace goal. Usual goal keeper Olivia Pratt made her presence felt in the Palace midfield, looking equally at home on the park as she does in goals. A change during the first half saw Ashlae Pilven drop back to defence, strengthening the back line with her ability read the play and strongly clear dangerous balls. Emily Birch played with composure in City’s defence forcing the ball wide and dispatching the ball down the line. Sheridan Lock ran hard for City in attack but could not convert. During the second half, a high ball bounced in front of the City keeper and there was little she could do to prevent the looping ball bounce over her head into the net.
Goal scorers: Palace - S McCarthy
Wanderers 6 d Villa 0
Wanderers cemented their spot at the top of the ladder with a convincing win over second placed Villa. With four goals scored in the first half, including a well placed strike from the newly signed Monique Iannella, Villa were on the back foot. Grace Hopton lifted considerably in possibly her last game for Villa for the season due to travel and did as much as she could to cut off attacks on goal. Both senior and junior Wanderers teams have an uncanny understanding of each other, and played good passing football, with Jasmine White set up well to finish neatly on her favoured left. As Villa wore down, Angela Bennett continued in defence and managed to contain Wanderers to just two more goals in the second half.
Goal scorers: Wanderers - M Iannella 3, M Sims 2, J White 1
An impressive turnout of 17 Junior Development Players made for a jam-packed pitch, with the inclusion of positional playing in the second half necessary to improve congested play. With this modification, the girls found space and were able to play a passing game. Each week, the girls demonstrate increased skills with several headed balls and players using their bodies well to receive the ball. Monique Trapolino showed again her fine defensive skills under pressure, while several others including Rebekah Morgan and Karissa Coulson made no mistake in front of goal.
This Saturday will see City meet Portland at 1.30pm, followed by County/Wanderers and United/Palace fixtures at 3pm. In junior matches County meet Palace and City face Wanderers at noon. Millicent remain at home and host Villa in both junior and senior games.
