County 2 d United 0
The local derby of SEWFA kicked off the senior fixtures on Saturday, with County ultimately claiming the points for the first time since 2007. Two very determined sides took to the park with County claiming an early goal from a floating ball into the danger area from Paige Ransom. Although County used pace in its attacking third, United defenders Karen Panagopoulos and Julia Reader were able to read the ball well and deflect any attacks on goal. Megan McMillan in goals for County was rock solid in her position, coming off her line to claim any balls pushed just a little too far in front of attackers. Despite camping comfortably in the County half, United failed to capitalise on many goal scoring opportunities throughout the game. Ransom claimed another in the second half from a free kick just outside the 18 yard box to seal the match.
Goal scorer: County – P Ransom 2
Wanderers 3 d Portland 0
Wanderers hit the park full of confidence, with a side comprising several members of the successful WBSA Under 16 team from the previous week. With three goals scored before the break, including a fine header from Kim Jensz-Walker, Wanderers were looked to outplay the Victorians. However, Portland’s backline settled and made for heavy traffic for Wanderers to break through. Newcomer to the game Jess Looker showed a good understanding of the game, tackling hard and passing some excellent balls along the line for Portland to attack. Alannah Daniel showed good balance on the ball, attacking herself or passing for team mates when required but could not help Portland get onto the scorecard, with Kendall Saffin reading the play well and sending the ball back to Wanderer’s attacking half. With no addition to the score after half time, Wanderers were content to claim the points in a hard fought battle.
Goal scorers: Wanderers – K Moy, K Jensz-Walker, P Ackland
Palace 12 d Villa 0
Palace took control of the match from the start, playing with confidence and poise. Despite the growing scoreline, Villa worked hard with Beth Harris showing some exceptional defensive work to win the ball under pressure and distribute to feet. Sharnee Lock also showed great improvement on Saturday, tackling when necessary but content to play a holding defensive role, forcing Palace to rework its attack on goal. With four scored in the first half, the scoreline crept higher as the second half wore on with 7 goal scorers in total including a headed goal from Bec Hillyer and a last minute finish from Shaye Stuckey who has returned to Palace after a break of several years.
Goal scorers: Palace – J McCormick 4, T Andrews 2, G Tentye 2, E Thompson, B Hillyer, C Dickins, S Stuckey
City 6 d Millicent 1
In a repeat of the half way fixture of last year, City seniors travelled to Millicent. City were keen to get off the mark early this match, after failing to score in its previous two matches and wasted no time in slotting three home in the first half. City displayed quality football, content to pass the ball around to create opportunities in attack, forcing Millicent into a chasing game. During the second half, Tania Grant continued to be the play maker of the team for City, with superb passing to forwards who made no mistake in front of goal with Jen Smith back on the scoreboard with a hat trick. However, Nikki Lambert claimed the distinction of being the first player to slot one past the City keeper for the year to give Millicent a goal of its own. An injury to Millicent keeper Hannah Kent forced a change towards the end of the match, but City travelled home happily with its 3 points.

Also for Villa, Melanie Wilmot controlled her position, distributing well and providing excellent off ball movement to support her team mates. Soaking up sustained pressure has become part of the County game, with Ashley Tye as goal keeper, urgently covering ground to deflect a goal bound ball in the first half, much to the delight of her back line. Jess Boyd looked dangerous in attack for County but found it difficult to negotiate the solid defence and Villa held on to claim three goals and three points.
