Round Ball star Jenna McCormick scored two more on the weekend.

SENIORS

City 5 d Portland 1
City made the most of the space on the pitch, capitalising on gaps and pushing the ball forward. Early in the first half, a strong run from Jen Smith was forced wide by Portland defence, however Smith was given enough room to cut the ball back and Lauren Birch continued her goal scoring streak to finish cleanly. Another goal shortly after buoyed City and it scored twice more before the break. The young Portland midfield worked hard with Bohdeen Gerritsen and Rachael Bennett breaking often but to no avail. Of recent times, Portland lifts in the second half and this time was no different. Containing City to a solitary goal in the second half, Portland notched up a goal of their own late in the game when a quick surge forward saw a one on one with the keeper slotted home.
Goal scorers: City - L Birch 2, K Maczkowiack 2, J Smith Portland - K Kilgour

Wanderers 7 d County 0
Wanderers consolidated its third position on the ladder with a dominating display, leaving it 11 points clear from County in fourth spot. Showing the versatility of the side, Jamie-Lee Kember pulled on the goal keeping gloves, whilst the three other recognised goal keepers of the side took to the park for a run. Despite the best efforts of the County defence including heroic goal keeper Megan McMillan, Wanderers took a two goal lead to the break. The indomitable efforts of Tania Widdison were no match for the Wanderers game play, who stepped up the tempo after the break with five more goals scored, including a superb strike from usual defender Eme Ripper. With 6 goal scorers for the Wanderers side, it is proving a tough job to mark attackers out of the game for opposition sides.

Palace 3 d United 0
This encounter provided spectators with a fast paced, high quality afternoon’s entertainment. Top of the table Palace expected to take the points easily but it was soon apparent that United had other ideas. Even though Palace pushed forward early in the match, it could not find an easy passage through the United backline. It took a long range strike finding the top corner to break the deadlock, followed soon after by another in the same spot. United’s Kylie Durbidge frustrated the Palace midfielder Jenna McCormick and the contest continued throughout the match. Palace’s Kelly Mann’s ability to find space on the wing and race down the line was exceptional however Karen Panagopoulos was steady in United’s backline, cleaning winning the ball and surging forward, with excellent coverage provided by the midfield. A goal scoring opportunity for United late in the second half was denied by astute goalkeeping, giving Palace another clean sheet.
Goal scorers: Palace - J McCormick 2, S Stuckey

Villa 4 d Millicent 2
Despite a nervous start from the sides, the match settled into an end to end affair, with Villa holding the ball well in attack, waiting for supporting players to make their runs. Beth Harris enjoyed a run up front for Villa and was delighted to score her first goals at Millicent’s expense. Millicent’s Jordan O’Loughlin proved a handful to keep in check but Rebecca Smith read the ball well and cleared decisively when necessary. The addition of the Millicent junior side to the league has added a new dimension to the team, with the inclusion of younger players such as Katelyn Canala coming off the bench to ably support the seniors. With each side scoring just one goal in the second half, an even contest ensued with Millicent battling to find a way back until the final whistle.
Goal scorers: Villa - B Harris 2, A Beck, L Horrigan Millicent - N Lambert, J O'Loughlin

UNDER 14S

Wanderers 6 d City 0
City knew it would be a tough job to contain the Wanderers side and in spite of their best marking efforts, Wanderers crept to a 5 goal lead at the half time break. When City did work the ball forward, it was met by a solid defence marshalled by Elizabeth Ray-Thatcher, who has developed as a reliable sweeper with a powerful clearance. Wanderers’ Paris Ackland showed strength on the ball, holding when necessary and finding space for sending through balls for attackers. Jamie Van Dijk and Jess Stephenson were stand out players for City, displaying both defensive and attacking expertise on the ball. As City settled during the second half, Wanderers were content to maintain its lead and work the ball forward patiently, adding just one more to their scoreline.
Goal scorers: Wanderers - J White 3, M Sims 3

Palace 5 d County 0
A more confident County side took to the park last weekend, following its victory the previous week. Some excellent passages on play from both sides highlighted the first half, with defence dominating. Strong tackling from County’s Bree Thomson and Georgina Peate held Palace at bay for a time, however Palace were content to build up its attacks on goal and Alesha Hales worked hard in the forward line for Palace, attacking from the left and a fine strike from her was rewarded with a goal. The return of Eleanor McClintock strengthened Palace, with her composure under pressure and first-rate distribution to team mates.
Goal scorers: Palace - I Pratt 3, A Hales, E McClintock

Villa 6 d Millicent 0
Janaye Donaldson returned to goal scoring form this week, with 4 of her own in Villa’s victory at Millicent. The understanding between Villa players played an integral part in the game, with communication a key element. With Melanie Wilmot directing traffic for Villa, Millicent found it difficult to contain the surge forward. Nevertheless, Villa did not have it all its own way. Siobhan McGowat continues to demonstrate marked improvement as the season progresses. With just two players moving out of the juniors next year, Millicent will emerge as a powerful force next year with the current stock of players, including the youngster of the side, Brianna Power who has several more years left in juniors to hone her skills.
Goal scorers: J Donaldson 4, N Koczak, M Hollands

The Junior Development Squad played a 6 v 6 match on Saturday afternoon at Blue Lake Sports Park. In years gone by, a headed ball in this match would have been a rarity, however, it is now becoming a commonplace event as the girls become more confident in match situations. The non competitive match play provides girls with the opportunity to put into practice skills acquired at trainings. The highlight of the game was a terrific team goal, started from a goal kick and involving several players with good passing and movement off the ball.

There will be no senior games played this week, with only the Under 14s taking to the pitch in a catch up round to ensure all teams play each other an equal number of times. At noon Palace play Millicent while City face off against Villa. Wanderers will meet County at 1.30pm. The Junior Development Squad will kick off at its usual 12.45pm timeslot.
