Round Ball star Jenna McCormick scored for Palace on the weekend.
As the senior SEWFA sides resumed their matches after the break, the gap again widened between third and fourth spot on the ladder. The top three sides of Palace, City and Wanderers are firmly cemented in poll positions, with no other sides taking any points from them this year to date. However, as the season enters the last four rounds before finals, the fourth position is up for grabs for several sides separated by only a few points.
SENIORS
Wanderers 6 d Millicent 1
The windy conditions of Blue Lake Sports Park certainly suited Wanderers’ style, with firm passing on the ground the preferred approach. The light blues set about finding a way through the tight Millicent backline and were rewarded with three goals on the first half, including a beautifully crafted goal finished with a well struck volley from Eme Ripper. Kim Jenz-Walker hustled her way through the visitors to claim another hat trick. Despite the constant pressure, Millicent defended well with good reflexive goal keeping from Hannah Kent. Wanita Robinson’s speed proved a worry for Wanderers, as she cleanly won the ball and broke quickly from her opponents on many occasions without seeming to tire. And once again, a defiant Millicent goal late in the game brought a cheer from the crowd on the sidelines.
Goal scorers: Wanderers: K Jenz-Walker 3, E Ripper, H Philp, OG Millicent - N Lambert
Palace 1 d County 0
The immediate pressure County applied forced a change of style on Palace who was unable to play its free flowing game. With the bench having a rapid turnover, providing constant fresh legs on the park, County pushed the ball forward, calling on Palace defender Chelsea Dickins to again prove her worth in the backline. Mardi McClintock took on the centre forward role for Palace and forced ‘keeper Megan McMillan into swift action on several occasions. A scoreless first half caused Palace to lift the tempo and take the lead shortly after the break. New to the pitch this year, Anna Cella impressed spectators with her speed and cool headedness, passing accurate balls or clearing when under pressure. The final whistle saw a relieved Palace claim another three points.

City 2 d United 0
With City having the kick off, United was prepared for the initial barrage at goal and held firm. City midfielders were content to pass the ball around hoping to find a crack in United’s defence but strong clearances denied goal scoring opportunities. Towards the end of the first half, City claimed the lead courtesy of an own goal. The last time these sides met, City took a 4 goal buffer to the break, so it was a confident United side that rejoined the pitch after half time with just a goal separating the teams and the wind at its back. United’s Mich Murphy and Palma Edmonds worked well together, stringing together passes in attack. However, despite several forays forward, United was unable to get on the scorecard. Eboney Gilbert moved from the backline to attack for City, finding valuable space on the wing to cross the ball in. Jen Smith made no mistake when given breathing space and her well struck ball gave the keeper no chance and sealed the game for City.

Wanderers 6 d Millicent 0
Millicent has tightened up defensively quite a bit since these sides met earlier in the season, catching the Wanderers speedsters offside several times. Toni Stevenson played in goals for Millicent and showed a natural aptitude in this position, reading the play well and making some crucial saves, limiting Wanderers to two goals in the first half. The maturity of Wanderers was evident on Saturday, with several players including Courtney Lavia and Emily Aston enjoying their last year in juniors before moving to the senior grade. As the time ticked by, Wanderers increased its lead claiming another four in the second half. Millicent’s Kathleen Woods, who will also move up a grade next year, showed tenacity on the park undaunted by a more experienced opposition.
Goal scorers: Wanderers: J White 4, M Sims, K Lehmann
Palace 5 d Villa 0
Although both sides played short, it was still a high quality fixture with the girls able to find plenty of space and attack their opposition. A highlight of the match was the Imogen Pratt/Melanie Wilmot clash, with the former team mates of the State Under 13 side, pitting skills and wits against each other. Fine goal keeping work from both teams started the match off evenly, however Palace slipped away as the game wore on. Hayley Taleporos worked hard for Palace, showing her improving tackling and distribution. Villa’s Cassie Ellis showed great style under pressure, looking for attacking passes to her team mates.
Goal scorers: Palace: I Pratt 3, E McClintock, A Pilven
City 5 d County 0
As the City juniors gain experience training and playing with their senior side, their confidence grows immeasurably in the Under 14 fixtures. With Erin Ireland comfortable in a defensive role for City, Emily Birch has been released to play further up the park, working well with team mates and attacking herself when the opportunity presents itself. In a similar vein for County, Taylah Cella made several attacking runs but could not find a way to the net. Katie Slattery is also showing great improvement each week as she takes to the park for County, with increased match play awareness benefiting her game immensely.
Goal scorers: City: E Birch 2, M Walters, K Kourmouzis, J Stephenson
Eleven Junior Development Squad girls played their friendly match during the afternoon. As the season progresses, some of these girls will be looking to make the transition to the Under 14 league next year. With small sided games each week, the objective for these younger players is to get plenty of time on the ball and to develop game play. As their confidence increases, so does the tempo of the games. Cody Hood showed great awareness when presented with an open goal and scored from distance. The return of Sheridan Sakkers and Lauren Frost strengthened the Green Dragons and some excellent play was witnessed by family and friends.
