The opening senior match of the day pitted two tough opponents against each other in trying playing conditions. Despite the blustery weather playing an obvious factor, both goals were scored in the first half. City made the score card first when the ball was not cleared effectively from danger and was played back in to be finished with a tap in. However, a free kick for Wanderers not long after levelled the playing field. Both teams created goal scoring chances but good defensive work from both sides saw the game deadlocked at the final whistle.

Millicent 1 defeated Palace 0
Bottom of the table Millicent had nothing to lose entering this match, which immediately became apparent as it threw everything at Palace in the opening stanza. Fielding a very different line up from its 2009 premiership team, Palace were overwhelmed by the strength of Millicent and just before the break, a goal mouth scramble saw the ball over the line to give Millicent the lead. The visitors were content to build a defensive wall in front of their own goal and given the opportunity, clear the ball decisively during the second half. A jubilant Millicent hung on to beat the triple premiers in a true David & Goliath battle.

County 2 defeated Villa 0
Refusing to let finals hopes slide, County hit the young Villa side hard. Despite resolute defending, County took the lead in the first half and after scoring a second tenacious goal after the break, regained a top 4 position. With two teams just two points behind, it is imperative for County to win its remaining two matches to consolidate this position and claim a semi final for the first time.

Portland 2 defeated United 0
The pressure on United to maintain its top four position took its toll on Saturday when it met a determined home side. Wet and windy conditions made for scrappy play with Portland adapting the better of the two. Goal keepers were the heroines of the day with each saving a penalty. Portland’s frontline pace rattled United, with a goal scored against the visitors in each half. Despite several good chances in front of goal, United could not find a way to the score card. This result saw it slip from fourth spot and also put Portland in contention for a finals berth.

Wanderers 9 defeated County 0
With the top four teams firmly cemented, Wanderers went about its business of goal scoring, honing passing and shots in readiness for finals action. With six scored in the first half, it did not give County a respite during the second half with a constant stream towards goal. Even though County defenders worked hard, they were no match for the powerful strikes high into the net from range.

Palace 2 defeated Millicent 0
It has been a tough year for newcomers Millicent however as the season has progressed, so too have the young players and scorelines have reduced considerably from the opening rounds. Palace took the lead in the first half with two goals but then Millicent juniors followed the example set by its senior team and rebuffed any further attack on its goal for the remainder of the match.

With several players out for the remainder of the season, it was always going to be a difficult match for Villa against City. Fielding just 8 players will always be a challenging task and City utilised their unmarked players well and claimed two goals in the first half. Despite Villa’s goal keeper leaving the pitch due to injury in the second half, no more goals were scored past the depleted team.

The competition will continue to heat up next week when Wanderers meet Villa at 1.30pm followed at 3pm by City v Palace, which will see the victor claim top spot and County play Portland. United head off to Millicent.
Junior fixtures include Millicent v County at Millicent and Villa v Wanderers at Blue Lake Sports Park at noon, followed by a Palace/City fixture at 1.30pm. The Junior Development Squad will meet at 12.45 for its kick off.
