The South East Women’s Football Association returns to Blue Lake Sports Park this Saturday for the first round of finals action.
The Under 14s kick off the day with two exciting matches at 12 noon. The elimination final consists of City v Palace, with the loser of this match ending its season. There have been no junior teams more evenly matched than these two, both with very strong defensive lines making forwards work for goals. Wanderers will meet Villa in a qualifying final, with the winner progressing straight to the grand final in two weeks time. Wanderers has been the dominant side all season, however Villa has pressed the light blues on more than one occasion and will do so again this week.
Senior fixtures kick off at 1.30pm with third placed Palace against United in an elimination final. Palace fields a very different line up from seasons past and whilst it still displays an exciting brand of football on the pitch, there are cracks which United will be keen to exploit. Playing in its first finals campaign, United have done the hard yards to get to this position in the season and will be keen to play its gritty game and undermine Palace to continue the following week.
The final match of the day at 3pm sees the top two teams of City and Wanderers meet. Draws have resulted from both matches between these two this year and a close contest is predicted. City has been the bridesmaid for several years and is keen to get back onto the winners podium. Wanderers have been third spot finishers for some time but laid down the gauntlet early in the season as premiership contenders. Defenders for both teams will have their work cut out controlling some of the league’s top goal scorers.
The Junior Development Squad will kick off in its usual 12.45pm time slot. As the season draws to a close, the girls are keen to showcase skills developed throughout the year, with their excitement heightened by the likelihood of an exhibition match on grand final day.
Last weekend, two squads of junior SEWFA players made the trip to Renmark to represent the Western Border Soccer Association in the State Country Junior Championships. With both the Under 13 girls and Under 16 girls finishing runners up, a lot of encouragement and recognition for our local girls will be taken from the matches. From this tournament, squads are selected to represent the County side in the Zonals championships. Several girls from both teams have been selected to participate in this competition to be held in October, which again is a huge coup for WBSA, SEWFA and the development of the sport in our region.
