Round Ball EDP member Monique Ianella scored goals in both U14 and Seniors this week.
SENIORS
City 3 d Millicent 0
Despite the absence of several key players, City demonstrated the versatility and depth of its side with the inclusion of several juniors. The blustery conditions did not particularly favour one side but added an interesting aspect to the game. A solitary goal in the first half brought a measure of relief to the home side but two more scored after the break consolidated City’s spot at the top of the table at the end of the minor rounds. The loss saw Millicent remain out of the top four and conclude its season, however with hefty defeats a thing of the past and the addition to the team of strong players, it will be a side to be reckoned with in season 2011.

United 1 d County 0
It was a must win game for County to reclaim fourth spot on the ladder before finals and whilst a draw would have sufficed for United, both teams hit the park with urgency in front of goal. Desperate defending in front of United’s goal kept the scoreline to 0-0 at half time. Early in the second half, a fine passage of play finished with a curving strike edged United in front. A desperate County pushed forward hoping for a long ball to catch the defence out however most balls were cleared effectively. With regular County defenders pushing into the forward line, United were forced to up its workrate. The final whistle saw the ecstatic United into the finals for the first time.

Palace 13 d Villa 0
Coming off the back of two defeats, Palace were determined to regain some footing before the finals rounds started. Played in rain from start to finish, Palace strove to control the match from the onset. Villa was persistent in hassling players off the ball and forcing errors but quick recovery from Palace established its on field dominance. Conceding four goals before the break, it was a deflated Villa that took to the pitch for the remainder of the match. Palace youngsters stepped up in front of goal with several getting their names onto the score sheet. A convincing 13-0 win saw Villa bow out of finals contention and Palace hold onto 3rd position.

Wanderers 3 d Portland 0
In a repeat of the final fixture last year, Wanderers headed over the border to Portland. A draw in the County/United fixture and a win over Wanderers, could have seen Portland into the finals for the second year running. Heavy rain over recent weeks has made the Portland pitch very heavy underfoot and hampered Wanderer’s hard attacking play. However, it soon adapted and capitalised in front of goal twice before half time. Despite player injury and the lack of substitutes Wanderers dug deep and notched up one more before the final whistle. No change in ladder position resulted from this scoreline, with Wanderers remaining second and Portland’s season over.

City 3 d Millicent 1
It is a pity for Millicent that its season has come to an end just as the girls are developing stronger match play tactics and improved passing skills. If the season had continued for them, it would not be long before they found themselves winning a match. Although City spent the majority of the first part of the game in Millicent’s half, it found great difficulty in breaking through. An urgently finished ball succeeded in breaking the deadlock before half time. City were able to add two more during the second half however Millicent refused to capitulate and edged one home of its own.
Goal scorers: City - J Stephenson 3 Millicent - A Cooper
Wanderers 2 d Palace 0
Palace held Wanderers scoreless for the best part of the first half despite many searching attempts from Wanderers to find a way into the Palace net. Exceptional running and tackling from Palace defenders thwarted many shots and turned the ball over into a Palace attack. However, a sustained Wanderers attack saw it onto the scoresheet in the first half. A second after the break saw Wanderers maintain its undefeated record for the season and put it in prime position for the finals rounds.

Villa 4 d County 0
County juniors kitted up on Saturday knowing it would be their final match of the season, with finals positions just out of reach. Coming off the back of victory last week and facing an undermanned Villa lineup, a confident County side hit the park and played competitively for the entire match. However accurate shooting from Villa proved the decider, with two goals scored in each half.
Goal scorers: Villa - J Wood 2, J Donaldson, N Koczak
These results will see the senior top four of City, Wanderers, Palace and United take part in the finals competition, commencing on 28th August. The junior lineup consists of Wanderers, Villa, City and Palace.
