Wanderers 1 drew with Palace 1
Palace claimed the points when these sides met earlier in the season however Wanderers has found form over recent weeks and a tough match was touted. Donna Pratt was given a marking role for Palace and worked extremely hard to deny strikes on goal. Particularly during the first half, Olivia Pratt was outstanding as Palace goal keeper, directing traffic and smothering any loose balls in her area. Palace withheld a sustained Wanderers attack for some time but upon winning the ball and sending it forward, could not penetrate the Wanderer’s defensive line with Zoe Scott playing a substantial role. With a scoreless first half, the intensity lifted after the break and Palace were rewarded with the first goal of the match. Wanderers’ heads did not drop. On the contrary, the attack on the Palace goal strengthened with Hayley Philp playing a pivotal role on the park. As the match neared the end, Wanderers found a chink in the Palace armour and made no mistake in front of goal, ensuring the points were divided for the match.
Goal scorers: Wanderers - K Jenz-Walker Palace - J McCormick
United 8 d Villa 0
United was determined to regain some standing on the ladder after sliding from 4th to 6th over recent weeks. Villa pushed forward early but solid defensive work forced the ball into United’s attacking half and there it stayed for much of the game. Melanie Wilmot had her work cut out in Villa’s backline and perhaps it was to United’s benefit that she had played a full game in the juniors at Millicent and travelled back to Blue Lake Sports Park just in time to take to the pitch. United’s quicks up front found space and surged forward when opportunities were there for the taking and were rewarded with five well worked goals in the first half, including a last gasp effort before the break from Tania Frost, using her body to force the ball over the line. Samantha Freeman played in Villa’s goals for the second half and was exceptional in her ability to read the play and showed no fear, throwing herself at feet to claim the ball repeatedly. Keisha Seiler found the back of the net four times throughout the game, and is hoping her goal scoring form will continue hroughout the next three rounds and into the finals.
Goal scorers: United - K Seiler 4, P Edmonds 2, T Frost, A Cutting
City 3 d County 0
City played to instructions during its first half against County, with precision passing making life difficult for the blacks. County’s offside traps were beaten with timed runs and speed resulting in three goals before half time, including a chipped shot from Lauren Birch which hit the back of the net on the full. County relaxed into the game in the second half and as the stress diminished, their assurance on the ball increased but despite ventures forward with young Jess Feast giving chase, goal keeper Lauren Lowe was not pressured unduly and was able to collect the long balls with ease. At the other end of the park, Megan McMillan was letting nothing through, despite sustained attacks, frustrating City forwards. With the three points firmly in place, City had to be content to hold the ball and deny County possession for the remainder of the game.
Goal scorers: City - J Smith, L Birch, T Grant
Portland 2 d Millicent 0
The long drive for Portland was worth its while as the Victorians achieved the desired result. Both sides are comprised of a healthy mix of youth and maturity, with teenagers making up a sizeable portion of each side. Paige Vanderheul played well for the home side, as did Madeline Brennan, forcing turnovers and sending the ball for team mates, however Kristy De Rose and Donna Kilgour held Portland’s backline strongly. With just one goal scored in the first half, the match was still up for grabs until a second Portland goal sealed the match.

Wanderers 2 d City 0
Some excellent passages of play were the highlight of this match, with both teams displaying fine skills. Jamie Van Dijk and Meg Walters stood out for City with settled games, both girls exhibiting composure under pressure. A well placed strike gave Wanderers the edge in the first half. Persistent pressure proved the key for Paris Ackland who also made the score card for Wanderers. Goal keeper Emily Aston was not altogether out of the action and produced some timely saves to keep a clean sheet for Wanderers.
Goal scorers: Wanderers - P Ackland, M Sims
Palace 7 d County 0
As County’s final hopes fade, their enjoyment of the game on the pitch does not, with skills developing each week. Stef D’Agostino played a left full back position for County and demonstrated a huge improvement from the beginning of last year when County first took to the park. The leg speed of Eleanor McClintock held Palace’s defence well and the goal keeper collected any loose balls that made their way through. Receiving the ball out wide, Ashlae Pilven looked confident in attack as she weaved through the County defence to claim two goals before half time. Georgie Peate denied several more opportunities for Palace, clearing powerfully in front of goal.
Goal scorers: Palace - S McCarthy 3, A Pilven 2, I Pratt 2
Villa 3 d Millicent 0
Despite taking to the pitch with just 9 players, Villa looked the goods early on at Millicent. Siobhan McGowat was hoping for a few goals to celebrate her birthday but Villa had no intention of letting that happen. Adele Cooper found it tough to get through Villa’s defence as they repeatedly cleared balls from danger. With two goals from Janaye Donaldson and one from Natalie Koczak, Villa was thrilled to claim victory and hang onto 2nd position on the ladder.
Goal scorers: Villa - J Donaldson 2, N Koczak
Fine conditions made for an enjoyable Junior Development Squad match. Julia Alvey is developing into a strong defender who makes very good decisions and is also willing to attack the goal. Manon Finch’s natural ability to win the ball and strike at goal will make her a very desirable signing for any of the under 14 teams in years to come. The girls will return to Blue Lake Sports Park at 12.45pm this week for another enjoyable match.
In other games this week, City meet Wanderers at 12.30pm in what promises to be the match of the round, followed at 3pm by Palace/Millicent and County /Villa. United take the first of their consecutive road trips to Portland.
Under 14 fixtures include Wanderers v County and Villa v City at noon, followed by Palace v Millicent at 1.30pm.
