SENIORS

Wanderers 15 d Villa 0
Wanderers slipped into second spot on the table with a dominant display of football on Saturday afternoon. Refusing to take the foot off the pedal, with 7 goals in the first half alone, Wanderers’ 9 goal scorers again demonstrated the versatility of the side. Villa continued its slide down the ladder, frustrated by player injury and availability towards the end of its season. When Villa is able to consistently field a full strength team, it will be a force to be reckoned with in seasons to come. However, it could not contain the intensity of Wanderers’ firepower, highlighting to all its premiership intentions this season.

City 2 d Palace 1
The return of several key players strengthened the Palace line up from last week, which suffered an unlikely 1-0 loss to Millicent. City took hold of the game early forcing Palace defence to push the ball to safety on several occasions. A lofted corner sailed over the outstretched keeper to give City the lead during the first half. A second after the break gave City some breathing room, however when Palace scrambled one over the line to bring the difference to a solitary goal, it was all out defence to hold onto the lead. A jubilant City took all three points from Palace for the first time in several years and held its top spot on the table.

United 1 d Millicent 0
Millicent took advantage of the wind in the first half, winning the toss and opting to go with the wind, hoping to get some early goals. However the strength of the wind pushed many balls over the line and out of play frustrating Millicent forwards. Despite having the majority of the attack, a solid clearance followed by several quick passes caught Millicent out and United got on the scoreboard just before half time. United spent most of the second term camped in Millicent’s half but good goal keeping prevented addition to the score. Millicent claimed a corner in the dying seconds of the game but was denied the goal by a powerfully headed clearance from the far post.
Goal scorer: United - P Edmonds

County 0 drew with Portland 0
Prior to the match, County held the coveted fourth position on the ladder with Portland just two points behind. A win to Portland could have seen it steal that spot. County stunned Portland at home earlier in the season with a 4-0 victory and Portland set about balancing the ledger. The speed of Portland’s forwards kept County busy, with good distribution from the midfield creating some headaches. Despite several chances from both teams, a clean sheet was kept by both ‘keepers resulting in a 0-0 draw in a fast paced, physical match.

UNDER 14S
County 1 d Millicent 0
Close encounters are the order of the day when these sides meet and this fixture was no different. Windy conditions tested the young players but it was County that found the edge scoring in the first half. Millicent had its chances also but County defence were up for the challenge and took care of every threat. A relieved County were thrilled at the final whistle to claim another victory as its season draws to a close.
Goal scorer: County - T Cella

Wanderers 6 d Villa 0
Wanderers retained its unassailable lead on the top of the Under 14 table with another victory. The undermanned Villa fought against the surge of attacking blues, with some good defensive work but the ball just kept coming back. Four goals were scored in the first half, with another couple added after the break.
Goal scorers: Wanderers - J White 3, M Iannella 3

Palace 2 d City 0
The absence of substitutes did not seem to trouble Palace, allowing players to settle into positions for the match. It took a 2 goal lead into the break, hoping to increase that lead as the match wore on. However, City created opportunities of its own throughout the match but could not find a way through or over Palace defenders.
Goal scorers: Palace - S McCarthy 2

The final round of the season before finals will be played this weekend with several positions on the ladder still to be decided. At 1.30pm City play Millicent, followed at 3pm by Villa v Palace and the match of the round County v United. United’s victory over Millicent saw it slip into fourth spot over County on the narrowest of margins, with points and goal difference identical and only goals scored giving it the edge. The winner of this match will claim the coveted fourth spot and a chance in the finals, with the loser left to ponder season 2010 and what might have been. Portland will remain at home to face Wanderers.
In the junior table City, Palace and Villa are all level on points and seeking the prized second spot on the ladder, providing a second chance in the finals series. At noon City play Millicent and Palace face Wanderers followed at 1.30pm by a County/Villa fixture. The youngest of SEWFA players take to the pitch at 12.45pm in the Junior Development Squad match.
Local girl Jenna McCormick recently returned from her duties in Melbourne in the School Sport Australia Football Championships (U19). Demonstrating considerable talent in the midfield and scoring several goals, Jenna impressed Australian selectors. The School Sport Australian Girls team was selected from these championships as well as a “shadow” team of players, vying for places in the team if positions open up. Jenna was the only South Australian to be selected in this shadow team. The team will travel to Asia early next year for competition. A notable performance at this level is well on the way to selection for a berth in the Young Matildas in the future.
