Well done to one of our graduates Jenna McCormick who last week, captained the South Australian U19 Schoolgirls squad, scored 4 goals, played great, was notified that she is now part of the W- League Adelaide United Training squad..... And also was selected in the Australian Schoolgirls shadow Team! What a week! We are all very proud of you!

Jenna adds AFL football to her list of sporting achievements

Jenna McCormick will represent her state at the forthcoming National AFL Football competition.  To be held in on the Gold Coast in mid-September, Jenna joins an already experienced and talented squad of girls from Adelaide.  However, before that, Jenna will don the SA strip once again, to represent the state at soccer.  This will be her second year representing the State Schoolgirls team.  2011 sees the competition in her home state and will be held at the new Burton Park Soccer facility in Salisbury from the 13^th – 19^th August.  2010 was a highlight with Jenna being selected as a ‘shadow’ player for the Australian Schoolgirls team, so in 2011 Jenna hopes to go one step further and make the Australian squad.  Yet another highlight for Jenna has been the invitation to trial for Adelaide United’s W-League women’s team.  These trials which began this week, saw Jenna score 3 goals in the trial match – the only goal scorer for the evening.  A number of Premier & state league players were invitied to attend.  Next week a select few will join the SASI and state players to determine a W-League team for the 201/2012 season.  As a player in the weekly Adelaide Airport Women’s State league competition for the first time in 2011, Jenna leads the goal scoring with 13 goals this season.  Needless to say, it will be difficult to win a place at this stage.

Jenna made a decision this year to move to Adelaide to pursue these sporting aspirations.  She is currently a Boarder at the Walford Anglican School for girls in Unley.  Even in the first half of this year, she has seen the benefit of living in the city.  Whilst the weekly trips to Adelaide to train or play has been replaced by many trips to and from training.  Twice a week she trains at Pennington Oval for her state league team – Western District Toros.  Her coach Leigh Matthews has been very supportive ensuring transport to and from both training and the weekly game is in hand.  The SANFL have also supported Jenna in getting her to Semaphore for weekly football training, thanks to her coach Tim Stewart.  State schoolgirls training is also held weekly with support from the assistant Coach Leigh Matthews and coach Viv Derrick.

With her focus keenly on soccer and football, it is hard to see her focus on the forthcoming state cricket trials…. Her hand may well be forced if she is successful in gaining selection in the  W-League's Adelaide United squad.

The Walford Boarding school staff have been very supportive of Jenna’s busy schedule and are impressed with her high level of organisation and her ability to balance her school work with her sporting pursuits.  So 2011 has already looked bright with the move to Adelaide, having represented  her state in the National Cricket Championships in January, the State schoolgirls Soccer in August and the National AFL Championships in September.  Whatever the immediate outome with the W-League, Jenna will continue to pursue her sporting dreams.

JENNA MAKES HISTORY

Jenna McCormick has made history in becoming the first soccer player from the Limestone Coast to make the Australian Schoolgirls Shadow Squad. The squad was selected last weeks and is recognition of Jenna's outstanding leadership. McCormick was the only player from South Australia to be selected in the shadow or full squad. The full squad will tour China and Japan in January and February 2011. McCormick is currently on standby as the Shadow Squad is where replacement players will come from when needed for the tour.

JENNA MAKES THE GRADE

Jenna McCormick will represent her home state of South Australia at the forthcoming State School girls’ National Soccer Competition. Held in Melbourne at the Darebin International sports centre from the 31st July – 6th August, the South Australian team look set to put in a stronger performance than 2009 with the selection of Jenna and Adelaide’s Hayley Smith, both of whom have represented South Australia at State level in the National Youth Championships, Coffs Harbour 2009.
Coach Viv Derrick is a level 3 FIFA accredited coach and brings a wealth of skill and expertise to this team. She is able supported by Toros Premier League coach – Leigh Matthews. Stuart Mullord from Xavier College rounds out the Management Team as the Schools’ representative.
Jenna has represented her State in the previous 2 years, but this is her first foray into the School Girls’ competition. She is looking forward to competing against other girls from across the schools in Australia. As in previous years, Jenna’s family has provided the opportunity to attend weekly trainings in Adelaide to enable her to be part of this experience. Jenna recently performed at an outstanding level at the State Championships held in Adelaide on the long weekend in June. She captained the U16 Western Border Soccer team who won the Championships convincingly kicking an almighty sum total of 41 goals for the weekend with Jenna being a major contributor to this scoreline, with her skilled midfield passes through and with over one dozen goals to her credit.
Recently Jenna was awarded a country athlete scholarship and has since attended a SASI elite Athlete Development day in Adelaide where they were tested and attended lectures with psychologists, nutrionists and Olympic athletes. She was also successful in being awarded a Federal Government Local Sporting Champions Grant.
She is currently also part of the South Australian U18 women’s cricket squad and hopes to be selected in the final team to play in January 2011. Her selection in the Chappell- Whitty Cricket Academy has continued this year and she, along with a select group of local cricketers, was recently presented with her 2010 Jacket. To ease the burden of constant travel to Adelaide and missing countless lessons at Tenison Woods College, Jenna has accepted a Scholarship to attend Walford Anglican Girls School in Adelaide in 2011 where she will be able to more easily pursue her sporting dreams.
