WBSA Elimination Final Centrals v Sharks‏

The much awaited Elimination Final between 3^rd place Gambier Centrals and 4th place Gambier City Sharks, was played at the home of Apollo SC on Sunday.

The last time these teams played, Centrals won comfortably 4-0 against a very under strength Sharks team in Round 12.

The Sharks finally were able to produce a full strength squad with all players being available.

The Game summary as follows:

Centrals captain Jesse Wehnam won the toss and decided to kick with the wind in the first half.

The Sharks started without their key player Matt Weistra, who was fulfilling his duties with South Gambier Football Club, playing in the A Grade Elimination final against North Gambier.

It was an arm wrestle right from the start, but it was the Sharks that started the attack with Julien Tralongo in action very early in the game when he shoots from distance only to see the ball travel over the cross bar.

Both teams were applying lots of pressure, causing many turnovers and playing counter attack style game. The Lions were sending long balls to their forwards, but the Sharks defence of Widdison, Wright, Pilven and young Leary prevented any early attempts on goal.

The hard running midfield of Tobbei Kennett & Matt Gordon were causing some concerns for the Lions as many times they broke through the defence and had shots on goal.

Lions keeper Bytheway was in good form, and save after save denied the Sharks any goals.

Jason Brooks & Marc Bope were following instructions from their coach keeping the most dangerous, talented players for the Lions in Alex Sims & Mark Judd very close and denying them any positive possession.

(28min) From the side line in the Sharks attacking half, Pilven throws the ball to the feet of his captain Tobbei Kennet, who controls the ball, dribbles to the edge of the 18 yd box, and from a tight angle smashes the ball so hard it goes under the cross bar, denying any chance for Bytheway to save. What a goal. Score 1-0

Coach Bruttomesso made his first change bringing off Julien Tralongo who seemed to have over stretched his hamstring, and replacing him with his younger brother Chris.

Half Time Score. Sharks lead 1-0

(80min) Centrals young gun, Mark Judd found some space on the right side of the field, and from approx 20 yds blasts the ball over the Sharks keeper Fuller into the back of the net. Was a great goal. Score 1-1.

At the final whistle, the scoreline was locked at 1-1.

Both teams now have to play extra time (10mins/each way).

As both teams were having a break, Matt Weistra arrived and quickly got ready to go on and play in the extra time.

Unfortunately, Chris Tralongo was selected to come off making way for Matt Weistra.

All players were starting to feel fatigued after a long 90 min arm wrestle.

Another substitute was made by Coach Bruttomesso when Salva Kasole was suffering from cramps came off and was replaced by much experienced player Andy Gentile.

Gentile had made an immediate impact as his decision making and passing skills were evident, and was very unlucky not to score.

It was the 2 goal keepers that were giving the large crowd some entertainment making some great saves, both in Norton Fuller (Sharks) & William Bytheway (Centrals).

(5 mins –second half/extra time) Sharks are awarded a corner, Weistra steps up to take it.

Weistra delivers the perfect ball, with his captain Tobbei Kennett against Centrals captain Jesse Wenham.

Kennett manages to break free and positions himself to meet the ball and executing the game winning header into the top left hand corner of goal. A helpless Bytheway could only watch the ball as it crossed the line. Sharks lead 2-1.

Final whistle blew, and it was the Sharks that were the victors and now earn themselves a place in next weeks Preliminary Final against their arch rivals International SC, who lost to Apollo in penalties after the scoreline was locked at 2-2 after extra time.

WBSA Premiership Round 14 Millicent v Sharks‏

In the final round of the Dycer Constructions Premership, Sharks travel to Millicent to face Millicent United.

Last time these teams met, Sharks run out comfortable winners 7-1.

Sharks were eager to find some form with a week away from the critical Elimination Final against Centrals

Sharks were missing some of their key players this week ensuring that the strongest team possible will be available for the important match the following week.

Also missing was the Sharks Coach Bruttomesso, who was admitted to hospital on Friday suffering from severe back pain.

WBSA Legend , President and assistant coach Vic Gentile stepped into to take control of the senior teams in Bruttomesso’s absence.

The weather conditions were cold and windy and a very strong breeze made the playing conditions very difficult.

Game Summary as follows:

(20min) Good midfield play resulted in a well finished goal by the captain of the day Jason Brooks. It started when Kasole received the ball, passed out wide to Bope who cleverly switched play to find Brooks unmarked who carried the ball into the box and smashed the ball past the keeper. Score 1-0.

Coach Gentile made the first substitute of the game bringing off key striker Julien Tralongo for a rest and replacing him with up and coming youngster Luke Harris who bagged 2 goals in the u17 game earlier on in the day.

Tralongo was needed for the bigger mission that lay ahead the following week. This gave another opportunity for youngsters to get more time in Senior games.

Sharks were dominating possession and kept the ball in their attacking half for most of the half, but it was the United defence of Dibley that kept United in the game.

Half Time

(55min) Again, good passages of play in the midfield, when Widdison placed a well timed through ball to a hard running Bope, who displayed some fancy footwork to get past the defence and slam another one home for the Sharks Score 2-0

(70min) It was Widdison again who executed a killer pass to Kasole, using his incredible skill had no trouble slotting the ball past the keeper. Score 3-0

The Final score Sharks winning 3-0

The Sharks now prepare to do battle with the Lions in the much anticipated Elimination final being played next week at the Apollo SC –Webb Street.

WBSA ROUND 12 Apollo v Sharks‏

In Round 12, the Sharks travel to Webb Street, to face the Premiership favorites Apollo.

The last time these teams met in Round 5, Sharks beat the Premiers 3-2 at Shark Park.

Since that game, Sharks have lost some key players due to injury, suspension and relocation.

Sharks started the second round of the Premiership with a loss to Blue Lake, Inter & Centrals last week and were looking to find some form, 3 weeks away from the Elimination Final.

Still without key players, the Sharks were facing a huge challenge.

In the previous senior game, Sharks B Grade scored an emphatic win against the Premiers scoring 2 goals to nil.

First goal scored by Sharks veteran Dino Gentile who cleverly headed the ball over the keeper from a well directed free kick from Craig Wright.

The second goal was scored by August Htoo, who cleverly showed some fancy footwork beat 3 defenders, and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper.

The feeling in the Shark camp was very positive, and it was the true spirit of the Sharks that defeated a polished Premiership side.

Could the A Grade repeat a win against the Premiers with an under strength side who has been struggling recently?

The game summary as follows:

(2min) Apollo indicated their intentions right from the start with an explosive attack which resulted Matt Ripper finding space down the wing, crossed the ball hard and low across the box and found an unmarked Jamie Stephenson who slammed the ball into the back of the net. Score 0-1.

The Sharks camp were totally stunned, but the boys held their heads high and just continued with the uphill battle.

(26min) Matt Weistra was displaying some of his amazing skill on the ball, but was fouled just outside the box about 20 yards out.

Tralongo quickly claims the free kick, and makes no mistake hitting the ball hard and low finding space around the Apollo wall and past the keeper Morris. Score 1-1

(30min) It was Tralongo again who cleverly showed some skill not only to shield the ball away from the defenders, but manages to slip past the defence and the keeper and blast the ball into top left hand of goal. Score 2-1

The game was turning out to be an end to end battle.

Sharks defence of Wright, Pilven and the youngsters Leary & Lamont were able to limit the amount of chances Apollo could get in front of goal by applying pressure forcing turnovers and dispossession.

Sharks pair of Wright & Pilven who previously starred in the B Grade win were continuing on with their brilliant form in the A Grade match.

Pilven keeping his head was proving very quickly that he is a very talented player and was combining well with Wright holding the Sharks defence very strong.

Fuller who has been battling with injuries this year was back at his best. Pulling off some brilliant saves and denying Apollo forwards any goals.

Half Time

Score Sharks lead 2-1

Coach Bruttomesso was more than pleased with the first half performance from his boys.

Even though they conceded a very early goal, they kept the pressure on Apollo forcing them to make unforced errors and losing possession of the ball.

The message at half time was to keep the pressure on and don’t allow them to have easy possession and find space to shoot & make the most of any opportunity in front of goal.

The second half started with 4 yellow cards being issued in the first 10 mins to both teams.

(68min) It was a hatrick for Tralongo again who receives a brilliant through ball from Weistra, manages to break away from Bytheway and slots the ball past a keeper Morris. Score 3-1

(70min) Minutes later, a penalty was awarded to Apollo for an infringement inside the penalty area. Bytheway steps up to take it, and converts easily. Score 3-2

Apollo sensed a comeback and Apollo Coach Derek Ferguson made the first change for the game bringing off his son young Matt Ferguson and replacing him with multi-game winner John Stephenson.

Some excellent runs from Sharks winger Jason Brooks who bought the ball deep into Sharks attacking zone.

Tralongo again receives the ball going forward, manages to evade the defenders, steps past the keeper with an open goal staring at him, he suddenly grabs his leg and drops to the ground with a possible hamstring strain. Score could have easily been 4-2, however he is substituted with his younger brother Chris.

Some excellent football was played from both teams, but it was the Sharks who appeared to hold their nerve and hold out their opponents for the rest of the game.

Sharks running out winners 3-2 in the end showing that the Shark’s fighting spirit is well & truly alive.

A fantastic day for the Sharks, firstly a win in the B Grade against a team that has not lost a game in 2 years.

And the A Grade recording their second win against the Premiership favorites, this time at Apollo’s home ground.

Coaches comments about his players;

Norton Fuller – Showed why he is considered to be the best keeper in the WBSA. Fuller displayed his usual reflex saves and high arial acrobatic saves. His ability to land his kicks in the attacking half consistently is amazing.

Daniel Leary – 15 year old, first year at the Sharks defended very well against the likes of Hodge, Ripper, Stephensons, Panagopolous.

Craig Wright – Solid in defence. He is very quick, can read the game and just appears to pop up all over the place. Covers a lot of ground during the game. Real asset to the Sharks.

Bradley Lamont – Also 15 year old, first year at Sharks and also first year of playing soccer. He plays with no fear. He’s tall, solid in defence and puts his body on the line regardless of the situation.

Corey Pilven – Proved today why he is considered very dangerous once he lets go of his negativity and focuses on the game. Can play in all positions on the park including a back up goal keeper if needed.

Jason Brooks – Very fit and works hard. Gives his opponent a hard time, and makes explosive runs that can cause head aches for the defence. Can cross the ball into the danger zone. Has been a real improver.

Matt Gordon – Current captain, brilliant performer works hard and never gives up. Displays some silky skills and is not afraid to contest the hard balls. Creates plenty of opportunities for his forwards.

Matt Weistra – Also hard working. Plays with a ‘never give up attitude’. Likes to win the ball in the middle, posseses the best foot skills in the competition. Can shoot from distance and also features in many assists in the goals scored by the Sharks.

Mafwata Bope – Only 17 yrs old, recently returned from a broken arm he suffered in Round 2 against Blue Lake. His best game to date. His job was to prevent Panagopolous dominating the game. He certainly did that.

Salva Kasole – Works very hard off the ball, running at speed putting pressure on defenders. Likes to use his fast silky skills. Found himself offside many times through out the game, which is very frustrating for the Coach.

Julian Tralongo – Joined the team at the same time the Sharks lost Okezie Nzeakor who was instrumental in the Sharks defence. With the return of some players, he now becomes the spear head striker the Sharks have been looking for. Scoring a hatrick against the Premiership team shows his capabilities.

In the remainder rounds, the Sharks are at home against the Portland Panthers , and finish with an away game against Millicent in Round 14.

With Tobbei Kennet, Heath Widdison & Ethan Parsons becoming available in the coming weeks, the Sharks Senior team will be at full strength when they will face Centrals in the Elimination Final.

WBSA Premiership Sharks v Centrals

In Round 11 of the Dycer Constructions Premiership, the Lions travel to Shark Park.

Last time these 2 teams met in Round 4, the game ended up in a draw 2-2.

Sharks have had a torrid time with injuries & suspensions, making many players unavailable.

Coach Bruttomesso has had to pick a different squad every week, depending on what players are available to him.

The weather conditions were perfect, the pitch had recovered dramatically from last week.

The game summary as follows:

(15min) Weistra came very close to scoring the first goal, when he found some room inside the 18 yd box, and blasted a shot towards goal, but ex Sharks keeper Wil Bytheway pulled off the save of the day, to deny Sharks the early lead.

It was a pretty even game with both sides looking for a way through, but it was the defenders that stood up and made it hard for the forwards to penetrate.

For the Sharks it was youngsters Lamont & Leary & Widdison who really came of age.

Lamont & Widdison had previously played 2 full games (U17 & BGrade).

Leary played his own age group (U17).

Wright & Tralongo held strong mopping up any loose balls that were in danger of a scoring chance for the Centrals attacking forwards.

At the other end of the park, It was Wehnam, Cutting, Thorne who kept the exciting duo of Salva Kasole & Mafwata Bope from scoring their opportunites as well.

Half Time Score 0-0

(65min) It was Centrals that found the break in the second half, when a basic mistake by the young Sharks keeper allowed the ball to deflect over the goal line off his foot as he was picking the ball up. Score 0-1 Centrals up.

(75 min) A defensive error by the Sharks again gave the lions an easy route to goal, when Tidy held the ball along the back line and found an unmarked target nearly the penalty spot, who slotted the ball past the keeper. Score 0-2

(80min) A penalty was awarded to Centrals when the player was tackled by Leary, which appeared to be outside the box, however referee Jeremy Butler pointed to the spot and awarded the penalty kick which was easily converted. Score 3-0

Coach Bruttomesso made some major changes sending Julian Tralongo & Wright up forward to assist Weistra and the forwards to see if they could reduce the deficit, but Bytheway was having a field day making some great saves.

(88min) A quick counter attack from the lions who finished off the game with their fourth goal.

The final score 0-4

The result was 3 points to Centrals, however Coach Bruttomesso is confident that most of his Senior players would be back & ready to face the Lions again when they meet in the Elimination Final in September.

In Round 8, the Sharks travel to Naracoorte.

In recent weeks, Sharks have unfortunately lost some of their quality players;

After losing to Blue Lake last week, the Sharks were eager to gain 3 points for a win over United to keep them in the Top 4

The game summary is as follows;

(3mins) It wasn’t long before the Sharks were on the scoreboard, when some brilliant passing from the Sharks midfield, ends with DaRocha slotting the ball past the keeper. Score 1-0

(11mins) It was DaRocha again who pounced on a loose ball inside the 18 yd box, and smashed into the top right corner of goal. Score 2-0

(25mins) Weistra scores a half volley with his left foot, smashing into the back of the net. Score 3-0

Naracoorte United made several attempts to get forward to score but were often thwarted by the Sharks defence of Wright, and the Tralongo brothers.

(36mins) A quick counter attack from United caught the Sharks defence off guard, and #23 shoots, the ball strikes the post and deflects into goal. Score 3-1

(43mins) DaRocha scores his hatrick for the day, when he displayed some fancy footwork, faking a shoot, causing the keeper to go one way, and calmly slots the ball in the opposite direction.. Score 4-1

Half Time

Coach Bruttomesso was pleased with the first half performance, but insisted that there was another half to play before the match is won.

(60min) First change saw Da Rocha coming off for a well deserved rest, and (U17) youngster Dylan Kennett coming on.

(62min) United player #8 was just outside the 18 yd box, when the ball fell loose, took a shot at goal which landed in the top right hand corner of goal, giving keeper Fuller no chance to save.

(70min) An attempted overhead scissor kick by Matt Gordon was deemed dangerous to the referee Butler. He was awarded his second yellow card then shown the red. Sharks were down to 10 men yet again making it very tough.

Naracoorte took the most of the opportunity and continually sent long balls to their forwards hoping to reduce the deficit, as Sharks had many chances on goal but could not prevail.

Keeper Fuller was called into action for the last 20 mins of the game, when United could sense another goal would make the game very interesting.

The ball was played end to end, with Sharks missing many chances to score and Fuller stopped everything coming towards him.

The Sharks ‘newly created’ defence were working overtime, but time run out and Sharks were the eventual winners . Score 4-2

Next week the Sharks face Inter at Shark Park in Round 10.

WBSA Premiership Round 7 Sharks v Millicent‏

In Round 7 of the Dycer Construction Premiership, the Sharks face Millicent United which was played at Shark Park.

The last time these two teams met, was Round 2 of the Belgiorno Cup where Sharks just won the game 3-2.

The Sharks were determined to keep their winning streak going, as they were sitting in equal 2^nd place with Apollo, both 2 pts behind Inter on the Premiership table.

The weather conditions were again terrible, with heavy down pour being very constant throughout the whole day, and the pitch becoming very muddy in places, and almost unplayable.

The game summary as follows:

(10mins) Weistra finds some room in the goal area, and cleverly walks the ball over the goal line after beating the Millicent defence. Score 1-0

(15min) Weistra again dribbles theball into the goal area, but is foulded. Kennett takes the penalty and blast it straight past the keeper. Score 2-0

(22min) Kasole receives a through ball, and cleverly side foots the ball past the keeper’s right, strikes the post and goes in. Score 3-0

(25 min) Leary makes a back pass to keeper Fuller, however the ball stops in the mud outside of the box, which allows #6 Millicent to shoot past the Fuller for United’s first goal. Score 3-1.

(27min) Kennett receives the ball, from the top of the box, blasts the ball past the keeper for another goal. Score 4-1

(38min) C.Pilven crosses the ball to Kasole, he shoots the goal keeper fumbles the ball, but Weistra was there to clean up the spill. Score 5-1

Sharks defence of Wright, Szpakowski, Leary and Gordon, proved too strong for the Millicent forwards, denying Millicent much of the ball in the first half.

Sharks midfield, of Kennett, Gordon, Weistra , B.Pilven  & Widdison, were displaying very good movement of the ball, even though the conditions were terrible.

Half Time

Coach Bruttomesso was very satisfied that his players were enjoying themselves, and still being able to play some good football, even though the pitch was deteriorating very rapidly.

In the second half, Millicent were putting a lot of pressure on the Sharks, and broke away several times, with Cameron Saint making his normal expolsive runs, however Fuller was on the ball every time.

Credit to the Millicent Keeper, who made some very good saves when he needed to , keeping the game still in reach for United.

(75min) Sharks first change saw U17 Youngster Dylan Kennett making his debut in the A Grade team , when Coach Bruttomesso substituted Brad Pilven.

(85min) C.Pilven was substituted for Colin Mackenzie.

The second half saw many chances for the Sharks go begging, as the conditions made it very difficult to finish off.

(88min) Kennett scores the goal of the day, when he blasted a half volley from the top of 18 box, giving the keeper no chance at all to save. Score 6-1

(91min) It was the Sharks captain Kennett who again found room dribbling past defenders, and blasting the ball past the keeper low and on his left foot. Score 7-1.

Final Score 7-1.

The Sharks finish the first half of the Premier Rounds with  5 wins, 1 draw 1 loss total of 16 pts, equal second with Apollo..

(Inter & Naracoorte’s game was abandoned, and will be rescheduled to play at a later date.)

Next week the Sharks face the reining Premiers Apollo in the first Semi Final of the Belgiorno Cup, which will be played at Malseed Park.

Sharks recently defeated Apollo 3-2, and will be looking to repeat that feat, to earn themselves a spot in the Final the following week.

In Round 6 of the WBSA Premiership, the Sharks down to Portland to face the Panthers.

The Sharks were still smiling from last weeks win against the reining Premiers Apollo SC.

The message from the coach was, ”Forget about last weeks win, this week we focus on todays game against Portland.

Portland Panthers are always going to be stronger at home, so we need to get the early goal on the board, and put the pressure on early.

We also need to improve our finishing in front of goal.”

The game summary as follows:

(10min) Kasole scores the first goal, when he receives a lob pass from Szpakowski running into the box, then calmly slots it past the keeper. Score 1-0

(12min) Shortly after Kennett finds some space on top of the 18 yd box, and slams it into the top right hand corner of goal. Score 2-0

Sharks were passing the ball between them very well, but the weather conditions started to worsen as the day grew older.

The rain was ‘bucketing down’, the temperature became colder, the pitch became a ‘mud pit’, and it was almost impossible to control the ball.

Credit goes to the the Panthers goal keeper, who was called on regulary to make some good saves, denying the Sharks to run away with a big score.

The first half sore majority of the play was played in the Panthers defensive half, as the Sharks were searching away through the extremely tough ‘swamp’ conditions.

Half time score, Sharks lead 2-0

(46min) It was within the first minute of the second half , when Weistra found away into the box, but was fouled by the Panthers defence. Referee David Stafford pointing to the spot.

Weistra makes no mistake, sending the goalie in opposite direction and slamming the ball to the right of the goal keeper. Score 3-0

(55min) Sharks take a corner, the ball spills out towards the edge of box, Gordon retrieves the loose ball and cracks a half volley into goal. Score 4-0

(60min) Weistra is substituted for Colin Mackenzie, who wastes no time seconds after coming on when he receives a through ball by Kennett.

Mackenzie with his speed and strength, gets past the last defender, and shoots past the keeper to give Sharks another goal. Score 5-0

(70min) Panthers #6 breaks way, from defender Hewish, who slips over and shoots from distance, the ball going over the young Sharks keeper’s head. Score 5-1

(80min) Kasole scores his second goal for the day after receiving a through ball by Kennett. Score 6-1

(90min) It was the speedy No#6 for the Panthers who does very well getting past the Sharks defence in slippery conditions, shoots hard and low in to the bottom right hand corner of goal. Score 6-2

Final Score Sharks win 6-2.

Sharks now sit in equal 2nd position with Apollo, both being 2 points behind Inter on 15 pts with their respective wins this week.

All teams have a rest next week, as the South Australian Junior State Championships will be held in Adelaide on June 11,12 13.

HISTORY MAKING DAY FOR SHARKS

'The most anticipated match of the year to date'!!

That was the buzz around the region and the whole day didn't disappoint the many soccer fans that came to Shark Park.

The Sharks Under 12 squad were first up and with a hard fought 2-1 Victory, they book-ended one of the biggest days in The Shark camp history.

Apollo were able to take back momentum by winning in the next two grades, U17 and B Grade.

With A Grade players from both sides watching on, the Under 14 match proved to be the perfect curtain raiser for what was to come. The Sharks Under 14's were triumphant in a whistle to whistle battle that no-one was going to call until the game was done, finishing in a scoreline of 3-2.

The scene could never be more set than it was, as The Sharks A Grade side 'ran on' for final warm-ups before facing their foe.

The Sharks were missing one of it's biggest assets in Goal Keeper, Norton Fuller, all thoughts were on Corey Pilven, recovering from a hand injury, was deemed fit on the Saturday and named as keeper for the day. Before the game Corey said "Fullers', were big shoes to fill, but he would do his best to do The Club proud!"

Sharks Coach John Bruttomesso said to his players prior to the match, "This game is crucial to the Sharks season. If we lose and Millicent win.. we go out of the top 4."

"If we win we go equal 2nd or 3rd dependant on other results for the day".

"The aim is simple...score goals!"

Coach Bruttomesso urged his players "Put pressure on the player with the ball, force them to turn over and hit them with 'counter attack' style football, with our fast forwards, Stemberger, Kennett, Weistra and Kasole running forward to score".

With a couple of positional shifts for The Sharks this was going to be a titanic test of will, skill and perseverance.

From the onset it was obvious to see that both sides were there to stamp an early mark on the game. The fast moving attacks of Sharks and Apollo were making space and pushing hard forward to apply early pressure on defences and keepers alike.

11 minutes in and a hard running Damian Stemberger enters the top of box and settles to shoot, only to be pushed in back, the whistle blew and the roar went up from the supporters as Referee Nathan Butler pointed to The Spot for a penalty.

Stemberger stepped up to take the kick, picked his spot, then striking the ball low and left, the keeper diving to his right, but unable to get to in time.

First blood to The Sharks, had The Apollo side shaking their heads.

This had the effect on the game of, opening it up, and both camps worked the ball around finding space.

Corey Pilven was being called on to save at regular intervals, turning a save into deep attack had Apollo scrambling at the back and they put the ball out on the right side. A quick throw from winger Jason Brooks into the penalty area saw Captain Tobbei Kennett attempt an 'over head scissor kick', but only made slight contact and the ball went wide of the upright.

The half time whistle loomed as Apollo were awarded a free kick in attack, Apollos' number 11 set up to take the kick and his team set up to push for a goal. As the kick came in toward goal the bodies went up, the ball finding the head of Hancock for Apollo and giving Pilven no chance to save as the ball cleared his head.

The Apollo equaliser wasn't what The Sharks were wanting right before half time.

In the half time huddle talk was positive at The Sharks, with the feeling high that Apollo were struggling to counter what The Sharks are throwing at them.

Not to be out done, the field was taken again and The Apollo side set about to improve on their first half form.

Apollo came out of the blocks hard at The Sharks, who endured the next 20 minutes of renewed pressure by the Apollo mid-field.

The next ten minutes saw The Sharks regain control, Salva Kasole showed great pace to chase down a through ball by The Sharks mid-field and chipping through The Apollo keeper to slot home The Sharks second goal and put them back in the lead.

Only 3 minutes later, Tobbei Kennett makes a long run, taking the ball toward the keeper and shooting along the ground and under the keeper, who was unable to drop quick enough to save.

Now only 20 minutes left in the half and with a 2 goal lead, The Sharks kept coming, but also with the focus on maintaining the buffer.

Apollo Coach, Derek Ferguson, threw everything up front at The Sharks, pressuring the defence to breaking point but they were holding strong and tight.

The clock ticked into the last 2 minutes of regulation time when Apollo were able to break from close to halfway and go in for a goal.

The call of, 'offside', went up around the ground, but the flag stayed down and the goal was awarded.

Defence, defence, defence was the call from Coach Bruttomeeso, knowing that the final whistle was moments away from giving The Sharks the win they had been working so hard for.

When the final whistle came the ground was flooded by Sharks players and supporters, all there to be part of 'SHARKS HISTORY'!!

The game will be remembered by all for; 'The Day We First Defeated Apollo SC. A Grade!!'

After the game Coach Bruttomesso was vocal in saying, "The young Sharks made history today in beating the reigning Premiers, Apollo A Grade, for the first time."

"With the passing of young Shark, Craig Wrights' Grandfather that morning, the team were fired up to give a good performance for their team mates' loss."

Bruttomesso went on to say, "How very happy he was with the result of today, and the experience gained in last weeks Federation Cup clash with Modbury Jets, was invaluable in preparing for the Good passing game that Apollo would bring with them."

"We have been working hard on improving our own passing game and this being the difference between 2010 squad and 2011 squad."

"Lead by, 'on field brilliance', from Captain Tobbei Kennett, who scored an amazing solo effort to secure the Win for The Sharks."

Sharks Club President, Vic Gentile was later taken ill by over excitement and was later admitted to hospital suffering from nausea and 'shock' symptoms.

The 3 points keeps us in the top 4 with less than a games' points separating 1st to 4th.

The next 2 games for The Sharks see a trip east to Potland and home for Millicent. A win in both will see The Sharks have 16 points at the half way stage of the season.

Coach Bruttomesso hasn't named individual best players on the day, saying "The whole squad deserve the title, it was nothing short of an absolute team performance by all who took the field!"

MATCH REPORT - SHARKS VS CENTRALS

As the two teams lined up on Sunday, the question was on every-ones lips... Would The Sharks be able to back up from the day before against Modbury Jets? Or would the tactic to not allow a postponement of the match prove fruit full for Centrals?

No-one could deny the fact that, there was an air of expectation over the game, some thing was going to happen today, that would define the season for both these teams.

'And That's What Happened' !!

The whistle blew and Centrals came hard out of the blocks, for a brief time, found The Sharks back line heavy legged and with only 3 minutes off the clock, were able to get a cross into the area by Huff to a waiting Centrals head, only to go clear of the cross bar for a goal kick.

Back in play and it was obvious that Centrals were going to keep coming hard as they pressed forward again and again. The Sharks back line was in full gear now and Craig wright was starting to get into the game and shut Centrals attacks, and using the support of Under 17 Daniel Leary, in his debut game for the A Grade squad, began turning defence into attack.

Now allowing The Sharks forward on a switch to the right. The Centrals back line, up for the job, forced the loss of the ball, away for a quick break and multiple numbers coming at keeper Norton Fuller.

Pressure by The Sharks defence forced the ball carrier deep to the bottom of the six yard box, but he was able to turn back and pass inboard for a first time strike past Fullers right to find the back of the net.

Score to Centrals at the 22 minute mark of the first half.

Sharks 1 Down.

10 minutes later and the pressure of the weekend, started to show as The Sharks frustration came to the surface. They made push after push into attack but with no reward for their efforts.

In the meantime The Sharks defence line was working overtime to combat forward forays by Centrals.

Stoppage time in the first half and the same combination of Centrals players work into the box and shoot, hitting the post and over the base line for a goal kick to The Sharks.

Half time and 1 goal down, some things to think about and decisions to be made by coach John Bruttomesso.

The focus of the chat was all about finding that little bit more to finish it off, knowing you've got the team to win isn't enough, you still have to do it!!

The Sharks started the 2nd half, pushing the ball back to the defencive line to open the play and give themselves room to run upfront. Immediately this proved to have an effect on the Centrals backs as, Kasole, Kennett and Weistra hit them on the left and bring Brooks from the right, and this all just means a 'GOAL' to Matt Gordon from a Brooks pass off a Weistra corner only 6 minutes into the half. The equaliser by The Sharks.

Score Level.

It was 13 minutes later when an on field incident caused the showing of a Red Card to the Centrals number 9 Tidy, and the number 1 jumper of The Sharks Fuller from goals.

As Fuller left the ground the decision came to one of who was going to finish in goals for The Sharks? Up stepped young Bradd Pilven, formally of Centrals and more than a worthy keeper for the task at hand.

The next ten minutes saw frantic football as both sides pushed hard when in possession and Centrals showed their determination at putting a goal past their old club mate. Pilven standing solid against these attacks.

27 minutes had ticked by when; "Penalty", Weistra taken down by Wenham in the penalty area and the ball would be spotted for him to take on the keeper, one on one.

GOAL to Weistra.

Sharks 1 Up.

Both teams played more space and greater attacking ability when reduced to 10 men, this was never more evident than in the chances which both sides made throughout the remainder of the half.

Into stoppage time and a flag goes up for offside, The Sharks players stop as the whistle blows, then the call to play on!

The Centrals attackers pounce on this opportunity and go into the box, after a scramble in front of the keeper Centrals get a shot on target. Pilven had a covering sight on it when it took a deflection less than two feet away, giving him no chance to react to save.

Scores Level at 2 - 2 to finish the game.

WBSA Premiership Round 3 Inter v Sharks 15 May 2011‏

In Round 3 of the WBSA Premiership, the Sharks travel to Casadio Park to face their rivals International Soccer Club.

The Sharks have never beaten Inter, and with a full squad it was up to the boys to see if they were up to the Challenge.

Last week, Inter had a loss against Premiership favorites Apollo, 5-2 , While the Sharks won comfortably against Naracoorte 6-3

In: Matthew Gordon, Jason Brooks, Salva Kasole, Norton Fuller

The game summary as follows:

(17min) Sharks put the pressure on straight way, when Brad Pilven makes a run down the right side, and crosses into the penalty areas, where Brooks connects a nice volley, only to be saved by Inter keeper Gareth Vonduve.

(28min) Sharks awarded a penalty when Weistra was fouled inside the penalty area. Pilven is given the job to take the spot kick.

Pilven calmly shoots to the left and wide into the side netting of the goal, giving the keeper no chance to save. Score 1-0

(33min) Szpakowski receives a yellow card for a dangerous tackle, even though he cleared the ball cleanly.

(35min) A lack of concentration in defence, Inter play maker Cella gets loose from his player, and camly slots a through ball onto a running Amari who rushes the ball over the line. Score 1-1

Half time

(48min) Inters scores the next goal when Matt Bueti, gets clear past Wright, who slips over, and shoots past a diving Fuller who can’t get his hand to the ball. Score 1-2

(50min) The game is stopped by the linesman, when he points out an infringement to the referee, and as a consequence, Szpakowski receives a second yellow card for retaliation and is shown the red card and sent off. Sharks down to 10 men.

The game was starting to get heated as both teams were trying to find a way through each others defence.

(55min) The game was stopped when the linesman pointed out yet another fiery incident. The result was a yellow card to Sharks Pilven for retaliation, and a straight red card to the Inter player for spitting on his opponent. Still going on about his concerns of being sprigged in the face deliberately, Butler issued a second yellow & red card which meant that Pilven was also sent off. Sharks down to 9 men.

This made it very difficult for the Sharks, but they did not give up. Wright moved up in to the forward line, trying to make an impact, but was unable to get a shot on target.

(80min) Inter constantly attacked the Sharks , but it was Fuller providing some spectacular saves and entertainment for the crowd, denying Inter another goal.

(85min) Finally Inter broke through again with Cella showing some individual skill taking on the Sharks defence on the backline, working towards the goal, and slots it through the legs of Fuller, giving Inter a lead of 1-3.

The Final Score 3-1 Inter

WBSA Premiership Rnd 2 Sharks v Naracoorte‏

In Round 2 of the WBSA Premiership, the Sharks hosted Naracoorte United at Shark Park.

Last time the Sharks played Naracoorte was in Round 12 of the 2010 season, with the Sharks winning 7-1.

Coach Bruttomesso decided to rest some players with niggling injuries to ensure they will be fit to face tougher opponents in the weeks to come.

The game summary as follows:

(15min) Pilven receives the ball, and shoots hard and low, the ball deflects off the United defence and into goal. Score 1-0

(24min) Some sloppy defending from the Sharks sees United get one back through some clever play by Kevin Marshall.

(34min) Pilven again receives the ball approx 25 yards out from goal, cleverly turns past one defender, and takes a shot which bends into the top left hand corner of the goal. Score 2-1

Half Time

(50min) A very quick reply from Pilven again volleys the ball from top of the 18 yd box, and scores his hatrick. Score 3-1

(52min) A controversial goal for United, when Sharks defence stopped for an obvious offside ruling, however the referee disagreed and allowed the game to continue, and Naracoorte scores their second goal for the game. Score 3-2

(55min) The next goal came from an embarassing mistake by the Naracoorte keeper, when kicking the ball out from the top of the box, he kicked the ball straight to an unmarked Pilven, who quickly slammed the ball over the keepers head and into goal. Score 4-2

(74min) A free kick was awarded to Sharks when Craig Wright makes a dashing run from the backline, however was bought down about 25 yds from goal. Wright was given the opportunity to convert, and made no mistake, by smashing the ball into the back of the net, denying the keeper any chance for a save. Score 5-2

(80min) Making his debut for the Sharks from Scotland, Colin Mackenzie receives a loose ball inside the box and scores his first goal for the Sharks when the ball was struck with force, hitting the inside of the crossbar and crossing the line. Score 6-2

(88min) A consolation goal for Naracoorte when Sharks looked a little too relaxed in defence, and allowed for United to have a shot, which resulted in a goal .

Final Score 6-3

Sharks remain undefeated winning their last 5 games, however they have a very tough schedule ahead which includes Inter next week, followed by the Federation Cup game against Modbury Jets, then Apollo and also a catch up game with Centrals.

WBSA Dycer Constructions Premiership Blue Lake v Sharks 1 May‏

The first of the WBSA Premiership competition saw the Sharks return to Malseed Park to face Blue Lake Rangers.

These two teams recently battled a fornight night ago, where the Sharks easily won the game 7-1 to finish on top of Group B and face Apollo in the Semi Final later on in the year.

Keen to keep the momentum going, Coach Bruttomesso was eager for the good form to continue, and start the season off in a positive way, to secure the 3 pts for their first game.

The Sharks were very confident, that they could do it again.

(3min) Szpakowski makes a break down the left , takes the ball very deep, and lays the ball across towards the back post when a high flying Kasole who just couldnt manage to get his head to the ball,but instead it struck him on the arm.

Without hesitation referee Phil Muller shows Sharks No 10 ,Salva Kasole the red card for a deliberate handball.

The Sharks were stunned...

(17min) Rangers No 8 receives a yellow card for late tackle on Matt Gordon

(31min) Kennett receives a left foot cross from Szpakoswki, and a near perfect header resulted in a just miss opportunity.

(40min) Sharks keeper Norton Fuller is injured, when he received a knee in the back after a bone crunching save.

Half time Score 0-0

(43 min) Kennett runs towards goal, and deliberately passes the ball to a waiting Szpakoswki on the left hand side of the field. With plenty of time, the Sharks defender, cleverly draws the Rangers defence, and with a perfect timed cross, finds Kennett unmarked and and on the goal line then easily taps the ball to score Sharks first goal.Score Sharks 1-0

(50min) Young Brad Pilven was showing dynamic speed and was consistently applying pressure on the Rangers defence.After a numerous amount of attempts, the Rangers had no choice but to foul Pilven inside the box, and the Sharks were awarded the penalty.

The young Sharks captain Tobbei Kennett gave the ball to Pilven,for his chance to finish off his hard work.

Pilven makes no mistake by sending the Rangers keeper Colin Smith diving to his left, and strike it hard at the centre of goal. Score 2-0

The Rangers added more players in defense, and it was difficult for the Sharks to penetrate.

(80min) Matt Weistra back from a 12 week injury, showed many signs that he was in for a another good year. Displaying some solid shooting skills keeping Smith very busy defending his goal.

Sharks were now applying real pressure when Nzeakor , Wright , Widdison were all taking in turns,making dangerous runs towards goal.

The Rangers started to move players forward, but this only opened up the game.

Sharks substitutes were used when Matt Wesitra & Brad Pilven both needing a rest, which gave Parsons and Hewish a chance to contribute.

The hard working pair of Gordon & Kennett just kept going forward, but easy chances went begging for the Sharks.

Sharks wern't able to add to the scoreline, and the final score Sharks winning 2-0.



Coach Bruttomesso was pleased to get the 3 pts, especially being down to 10 men for most of the game.

Next week the Sharks welcome Naracoorte to Shark Park.

In Round 3 of the Belgiorno Cup, the Sharks travel to Malseed Park to face their rivals, the Blue Lake Rangers.

In absolute perfect conditions, both teams were playing for top position of the table in Group B. Sharks with 2 wins (6pts), Blue Lake with 1win 1 draw (4pts)

The game summary as follows;

(3min) Brooks takes on the Rangers defence, crosses with a nice pass to a fast running Brad Pilven who slots his first goal for the Sharks this year. Score 1-0

(8min) Sharks Keeper was called into action early, as Rangers No 7 Thompson crossed the ball deep hoping to find Guess, but Fuller was quick off the mark to making a diving save.

(10min) Kennett and Kasole combine with some brilliant one touch passing, and Kasole slots the ball through the legs of Rangers keeper Armandi. Score 2-0

(12min) Brad Pilven, again receives through ball from Widdison, takes a shot with his left foot, rebounds of the post, but a waiting Brooks was there to smash the rebound in. Score 3-0 (27min) Kennett found some room, and from distance shoots for the top corner, but Armandi makes a great save to deny another goal for the Sharks.

(29min) Shortly after, it was the Sharks captain Kennett again, showing why he is regarded as one of the top players in this league, takes on one.. two.. three defenders, and from the 18 yd box shoots with his left foot..the keeper had no chance. Score 4-0 Half Time

(56min) Sharks playmaker, Wright takes off with the ball from defence, and travels at speed, taking on the Rangers midfield, releases a well timed through ball onto a waiting Brad Pilven, who calmly slots the ball under the keeper. The scoreboard keeps ticking over .Score 5-0 (70min) Rangers are awarded a penalty as the referee deemed there was contact between a clash of Sharks keeper Fuller and Rangers Striker Guess. Guess strikes the ball low and hard into the bottom right corner, Sharks keeper guessed correctly and dives making contact with the ball but was unable to prevent the ball from crawling over the line. Score 5-1

(75min) An acrobatic Kennett with an overhead scissor kick, was unlucky not to score the goal of the year. The ball was struck very hard. It deflects off the keeper, hits the post, and once again Brad Pilven was there to score his hatrick for the day . Score 6-1

(85min) Man of the match Kennett, with so much strength gets past the defenders, makes his way in the box, and was taken down. The referee points to the spot and Sharks awarded the penalty. Corey Pilven who was celebrating his 21st birthday, takes the honors and makes no mistake to score the last goal of the day. Score 7-1

Sharks Coach Bruttomesso was very pleased with his team’s performance, and congratulated his players for their efforts.

Special mention to U17 Captain Nick Hewish, who has earned himself a starting position in the team. “Everything we have been working on at training has all come together, and the team was able to remain focused for the entire 90 mins.”

Belgiorno Cup Rnd 2 Sharks v Portland‏

In Round 2 of the Belgiorno Cup, Sharks play their first game at home for the season 2011.

The Sharks were keen to improve, as last week they got off to a slow start, but finished the game strongly and came away with 3 points.

The game summary as follows:

(3min) It only took 3 min into the game, when Sharks Striker Kasole had a shot which deflected off the post, however Brooks was very quick to pounce on the loose ball giving the Sharks their first goal . Score Sharks 1-0

The conditions were very ‘greasy’ as the ball was skidding off the pitch, and very difficult to control.

The Sharks midfield of Kennett, Gordon, Widdison was displaying some good possession football, with Brooks sending many attacking advances in to the scoring area for the Sharks.

Many opportunities were given to the Sharks, but unfortunately no more goals yet to be scored.

(31min) It was late in the half, when Kasole found some room with a brilliant ‘killer pass’ from Kennett, was one on with the keeper, and cleverly chips over him to score his second. Score Sharks 2-0.

(40min) Panthers clawed one back when No 10 (Atodiresei), managed to get past Sharks defender, miss kicks it , but the ball still found itself trickling over the goal line.Score Sharks 2-1

Half Time

(49min) Kasole passes to Kennett, who strikes the ball hard and low in the right hand corner of goal. Score Sharks 3-1

(51min) Kennett passes to Kasole, who cleverly places the ball between the keepers legs. Score 4-1

(61min)Kasole shoots with his right foot over the keeper. Score 5-1

(64min) Kennett shoots from 25 yds out from goal, keeper fumbles the ball over the line. Score 6-1

Coach makes first change, Eh Moo comes on for Brad Pilven.

(70min) Kennett dribbles down the right hand side, crosses the ball and finds the back of the net. Score 7-1

Coach makes second change, Ethan Parson comes on replaces Salva Kasole whos scored a hatrick for the day.

(76min) Parsons makes an immediate impact scoring by placing the ball cleverly into bottom corner. Score 8-1

(82min) Sharks defender Nzeakor runs through the midfield with cleverly one two’s and finishes nicely for another goal to the Sharks..Score 9-1

(85min) Pilven from the backline makes his way to the outside of the attacking circle, and blast the ball past the keeper. Score10-1

(90min Parsons shoots from distance and finds the top right hand corner of the goal. Score 11-1

The Sharks totally dominated the game, with clever passing, good movement of the ball, and some nice finishing to ensure the scoreboard kept ticking over.

Next week, Sharks travel to Malseed Park to face their rivals, Blue Lake Rangers. These two teams always provide plenty of action and excitement.

Club veteran Dino Gentile makes a comeback after 2 years being absent from the game.

Dino suffered a heart attack during a game in 2009, and since then has had several operations including open heart surgery.

Dino made an immediate impact for the Sharks scoring the first goal of the game, and the winning goal to secure Sharks win.

Dino’s commitment to getting back to some form of fitness and his passion for the sport, was incredible.

Dino showed that he still had the skill to be competitive and was awarded Sharks best player for the day with 2 goals.
