Melbourne Heart FC Media Release

Bolton Claims Inaugural Player of the Year Award
(Skoko comes second!)

Melbourne Heart FC’s Clint Bolton has capped off an outstanding season in goal by claiming the Club’s inaugural Player of the Year award during tonight’s gala event at Studio 3 in the Crown Entertainment Complex.

Bolton held off a challenge from joint runners-up Wayne Srhoj and Josip Skoko to secure the crown in a tightly fought contest, with Aziz Behich and Matt Thompson rounding out the top five.

Head Coach John van ‘t Schip said Bolton, who produced seven clean sheets in 30 appearances, was a deserved recipient of the Player of the Year award, which seeks to recognise consistency and excellence throughout the Hyundai A-League season.

“Clint has been a great example for the group in what it means to be a professional,” van ‘t Schip said. “He takes care of himself, is very thorough in his preparation and despite possessing a significant level of experience, has still showed a great eagerness to learn.”

“During the season, Clint performed well in a number of matches and was a great stabiliser at the back. His attitude and approach make him a model of what we want from our players and I hope he will enjoy an even better season next year.”

Awarded to the individual who recorded the highest cumulative performance rating during the season, the Player of the Year is the ultimate accolade for a member of the Heart squad.

At the conclusion of each match, participating players received a rating from the Heart coaching staff, with the best 20 scores across the season calculated before contributing to an overall aggregate total.

The Player of the Year wasn’t the only prize distributed on the evening, with Behich named Supporters’ Player of the Year and John Aloisi, recipient of the Golden Boot for leading goal scorer and the Clubman Award, which honours the player who has best embodied the spirit, character and values of the Club, both on and off the field.

Team Manager Ben Coonan was the recipient of the Chairman’s Award, which recognises the staff member whose work has best reflected the ethos of the Club, while former National Soccer League referee Eugene Brazzale received the Volunteer of the Year award for his tireless work during Heart’s inaugural season.

Awards Summary

Player of the Year – Clint Bolton

Supporters’ Player of the Year – Aziz Behich

SKOKO'S LEADING ROLE

SOCCER legend Josip Skoko has returned to his spiritual home of North Geelong Warriors to aid the club’s 2011 season and help develop its legion of promising young players. Former Socceroo Skoko is forming a coaching dream team with his brother Ante, who has replaced Vinko Buljubasic as head coach. The partnership marks the first time that the brothers, who both have deep connections to Warriors, have worked together in soccer in almost 20 years. Skoko has registered as a player for the upcoming season, raising the tantalising prospect of the 35-year-old, who won 51 caps for Australia, playing for North in State League 1. Skoko retired at the end of the latest A-League season after a one-year stint at Melbourne Heart. However, he said: “At this stage, I won’t be playing, no. I retired for a reason,” he said. “I would’ve kept playing at the highest level if I could carry on. I registered just in case something happens, but I’d prefer the young players to take centre stage. “I want the club to do well and I feel at home there. I want to do anything to help the club and soccer in Geelong. The club is well positioned with its young players and financially too.” Skoko said that he started working with North’s under-21 players three weeks ago as a way to keep his fitness up and to dip his toe into coaching. In a rapid series of events, Ante, who was the under-21 coach, has been elevated to the senior coaching position following the dismissal of Buljubasic. Ante Skoko said: “Will Josip play? I’m not sure. I’ve had a lot of calls from people hoping he will do, but he is giving his body a well-deserved rest. “He will be turning up each week to take training and he’ll be there on match days too. At training, the kids really can see what it takes to be a top professional from him. “It’s been good fun to have him by my side. You have to respect what he’s done in the game.” Ante added of his coaching promotion: “It all happened quite unexpectedly. But I have got a good relationship with the boys there and the club is really re-establishing itself as a place for good, young local talent.” Joe Zilic, North’s president, admitted that the abrupt switch in coach on the eve of the season “wasn’t ideal”, despite the high-profile addition of the Skoko brothers. “I think highly of Vinko, he has done a lot for the club,” he said. “But there was a situation there that I couldn’t just ignore. I have to think of a club of more than 200 people. “But, as a fan, I’d say it is a hurdle to overcome. You can’t forget the players in all of this, I feel for them.” http://northgeelongsc.com.au/wp/2011/04/skokos-leading-role/

Melbourne Heart FC Media Release - Socceroo Legends Denied Fairytale Farewell‏

Socceroo legends Josip Skoko and John Aloisi were denied a fairytale farewell as Melbourne Heart FC was held to a 2-2 draw by Sydney FC in the Blue Ribbon Cup at AAMI Park.

After falling behind to a penalty from Nick Carle just after the half hour mark, Heart once again demonstrated its trademark spirit to claw its way back into the game as Dutchman Rutger Worm claimed an equaliser before half time.

And 15 minutes into the second stanza, it appeared the dream result would materialise as Aloisi slammed home from inside the penalty area to emphatically send the home side in front.

But Heart’s hopes of sending off Aloisi and Skoko in style were dashed as Carle popped up to score his second goal of the match in the dying stages.

While Skoko admitted he hoped to bow out with a win, the former Premier League star was philosophical about the result.

“We would have liked to go out on a good note but it doesn't always have to end perfect - it ends how it ends,” Skoko said.

Aloisi meanwhile said the day was one of mixed emotions, revealing his delight at calling time on his professional career in front of family and friends.

“I'd had a tear in the eye all day. I'd never felt like this before. I can't thank the Melbourne Heart people enough. It was a good way to go out. To end it like that with family and friends here, it was good,” Aloisi said.

Despite a place in the finals being out of reach, Heart was on the attack early as the side sought to provide Skoko and Aloisi, in addition to the departing Gerald Sibon, with a farewell befitting of their contribution to the game.

Skoko’s midfield partnership with Wayne Srhoj once again laid the foundation for Heart’s early dominance as the duo dictated terms in the centre of the park.

And it was Aloisi who was nearly the beneficiary of the early dominance, twice coming close to setting the contest alight with an early goal.

But it was Sydney that ultimately took the lead as Carle converted from the spot after Hirofumi Moriyasu was brought down in the area.

Heart bounced back nearly immediately though as Worm latched onto a clever ball from Sibon before blasting past Liam Reddy from the angle.

However, the home side’s joy was short-lived as Sibon was harshly handed his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card, marking an end to the former Ajax and PSV star’s stint down under.

Sydney looked to grab the momentum after the break but it was Heart that surged ahead as Aloisi capped off a marvellous career with a deserved strike, pouncing on a loose ball in the area before applying the finish with trademark panache.

Aloisi’s effort appeared to be enough to secure Heart all three points, but Carle intervened with two minutes of normal time remaining to ensure honours and the inaugural Blue Ribbon Cup were shared.

SKOKO SET TO START!

Farewell Skoko, an Aussie football legend

Farewell Skoko, an Aussie football legend
One of the greats of Australian football, Josip Skoko, will be farwelled from professional football this weekend. The 35-year-old is battling a knee injury and will hopefully appear for the Melbourne Heart against Sydney FC at AAMI Park this Saturday in his final game.

Skoko has been one of the best but most unheralded Australian players of his generation. Immensely talented, the midfielder has found success throughout his career.

He had four years at Croatian club Hadjuk Spilt from 1995-99, making 97 appearances and scoring 20 goals, before a move to Belgium with Genk. It was there, in 2002, that he captained Genk to the Belgian championship before making the switch to Turkey for two seasons at Genclerbirligi, where he was part of a successful UEFA Cup run.

It was in 2005 that he joined Wigan Athletic in England, spending 2006 on loan at Stoke. Despite having trouble breaking into the starting line-up at Wigan in the beginning, he would eventually play 45 matches for the club.

In 2008 he returned to his former club Hadjuk Spilt, where he spent two more years, before returning to Australia in 2010 to play in the Heart’s debut season.

Skoko has largely flown under the radar during his career, never seeking attention and quietly going about his business.

Perhaps, partly because most of his time was spent in European leagues that don’t get much coverage in Australia – Croatia, Belgium, Turkey – he never got the column inches some of his golden generation Socceroo teammates like Harry Kewell, John Aloisi and his good friend Mark Viduka did.

But Skoko was just as successful and just as talented as they were, and was always highly regarded by his teammates. A creative player with great technique and a good football brain, Skoko was an asset in any team he played in.

He was graduate of Ron Smith at the AIS in 1993, was a Young Socceroo and played for the Olyroos at the Sydney Olympics. All up he played 51 matches for the Socceroos and scored nine goals, which is no mean feat.

That puts him among the top 20 players who have played the most games for Australia. He was a key part of Guus Hiddink’s famous World Cup qualifying team, appearing in the history-making win against Uruguay, and scored some great goals during his career as well.

The cracker against Greece at the MCG in 2006 immediately comes to mind.

Apparently he is only a 50-50 chance of being fit for the game this Saturday.

Let’s hope he gets to play and gets a resounding send off. He has been a class act in the A-League this season, a very canny acquisition by the Heart.

Always a faithful servant of Australian football, someone who has experienced both the bad and good times in the sport, Skoko deserves our respect and our thanks.

MOUNT GAMBIER LEGEND RETIRES

Melbourne Heart FC Media Release

Socceroo Legend Skoko Announces Retirement

Melbourne Heart FC midfielder Josip Skoko has confirmed he will retire from professional football at the end of the current Hyundai A-League season.

A Socceroo legend, Skoko was one of the outstanding members of Australian football’s famed Golden Generation, scoring nine goals in 51 senior appearances across a decade-long Socceroo career.

Head Coach John van ‘t Schip said: “While I only coached Josip for a year, in that time, I have understood why he has had such a great career. He’s a real professional, he loves football, and he’s a purist.

“He still enjoys playing and I think that’s the main reason why he still at this age is performing at a high level. Josip is a player who has grown as a person in the game; he experienced a number of different types of cultures, playing in Belgium, Croatia, Turkey and England.

“And you can see he brought this experience with him to our club, and especially for the young boys, he was a very good example to show what it means to be a professional football player.”

After a successful farewell season in Australia, Skoko feels the time is right to call time on his 16-year professional career.

Skoko said: “I’ve decided to call it a day at the end of the season due to a combination of factors from old age to family reasons. Putting it all together, I feel like it is the right time to end my professional career and move on.

“I’ve always said that I don’t want to find myself in a position where I can’t be giving it my best every week, and I feel that while I’m still contributing and playing some good football, it’s time to hang up the boots.”

Earning selection for five major international tournaments, including the 2000 Olympics and 2006 World Cup, Skoko’s undoubted leadership qualities saw him named Socceroo Captain on four occasions, making him one of only 40 players to receive the honour more than once.

However, the 35-year-old ensured his name will be firmly enshrined into the annals of Australian football folklore with one of the most stunning strikes in Socceroo history, launching a long-range half-volley against Greece in front of 95,000 fans at the MCG in 2006 to send Australia off to the World Cup in style.

Skoko also carved a remarkable career at club level, plying his trade in Belgium, Croatia, Turkey and most memorably England’s Premier League with Wigan Athletic, making 53 first team appearances across three seasons in the world’s leading domestic competition.

Among the highlights of Skoko’s domestic career included captaining Genk during the side’s 1999/00 UEFA Champions League campaign, which included a match-up at the Santiago Bernabeu against the biggest club in world football, Real Madrid.

SKOKO WATCH

Melbourne Heart FC Media Release
Saturday 22 October

Heart Held By Resolute Gold Coast

Melbourne Heart FC has extended its unbeaten run at home to five games after the side was held to a 0-0 draw by Gold Coast United at AAMI Park.

Despite dominating possession, Heart was unable to break through for an eventual winner, as United defended resolutely to withstand the home side’s siege.
Head Coach John van ‘t Schip admitted he felt his side deserved more than a solitary point, particularly following a promising second half display where Heart’s passing game came to the fore.
“It was a difficult game, especially in the first half,” he said. “You could see that we have to get a little bit used to each other, and there were good parts. But it was also quite open. Gold Coast did it quite well by trying to press us high up and they achieved that a few times.
“We were very disciplined, we stayed in our organisation. I think the second half, we surely deserved more. We kept on pressing high, we played good football in some parts. I have to give a compliment to all the boys, and also of course, to those who came in and hadn’t played many games until now.
“I’m very happy with that. It’s also good to see the squad in total is growing and we get more depth with these types of players getting in.”
With the attacking trio of John Aloisi, Alex Terra and Gerald Sibon ruled out through injury and suspension, and defender Dean Heffernan a late withdrawal, Heart called upon its brigade of burgeoning talents, as Aziz Behich joined Nick Kalmar and Eli Babalj in the starting eleven.
While Babalj only recently returned from international duty in China, the Australian Institute of Sport graduate made a strong impression, regularly finding himself in dangerous territory as Heart made the early running.

Dominating the midfield battle, Josip Skoko dictated the tempo with metronomic consistency, pushing the ball across the park in an attempt to unlock a stubborn Gold Coast defence.

Although chances were seemingly fleeting throughout the opening period, Dutch import Rutger Worm went agonisingly close to granting Heart the lead, his curling effort only narrowly evading the far right corner of the goal.
Heart upped its intensity after the break, pressing forward in numbers, with Kalmar and Worm both going close through headed efforts.
However, the best chance of the match fell to Babalj, who managed to wriggle his way free of United’s stranglehold only to be denied by a stellar save from Kiwi international Glen Moss.

Melbourne Heart FC Media Alert - Heart Overcomes Phoenix For Win Number Two‏

Skoko returns!
Melbourne Heart FC has claimed its second win of the Hyundai A-League season after overcoming the Wellington Phoenix 2-1 at AAMI Park.

Following a dour opening stanza, the contest was set alight during the second half as Heart took the lead through a well worked John Aloisi goal and a stellar long range effort from Alex Terra.

Phoenix clawed a goal back in the final 15 minutes, but the home side remained resolute to secure the three points and climb up the Hyundai A-League table.

Head Coach John van ‘t Schip said he was pleased with the performance, which highlighted Heart’s commitment to attacking and flair filled football.

“I think we showed some good football today and we created some good chances to score goals, particularly in the second half,” he said.

“At the end of the course, when they made it 2-1 we suffered a little bit, but we managed it very well and worked hard. I have to give all the boys a complement for their performance today.

“We were playing some good football, and nice things for the people to see as well, but in the end, you have to make chances, and we did.”

Heart made a strong start, immediately testing Phoenix down the left hand flank, with Dean Heffernan pushing forward deep into the attacking half.

And within five minutes, the home side was presented with its opening chance of the contest as Simon Colosimo glanced a header agonisingly wide of the far post.

On his return from injury, Josip Skoko appeared in ominous form, linking well with fellow midfielder Matt Thompson in van ‘t Schip’s revamped formation.

However, following the early lapse, Wellington soon settled into its rhythm, with Leo Bertos and Paul Ifill looking dangerous on the opposing flanks.

And it was indeed a ball from Bertos which nearly provided Phoenix with the opener, as the Kiwi World Cup star played a low cross into Chris Greenacre, who prodded his shot wide.

Playing in a withdrawn creative midfield position, Gerald Sibon appeared to revel in his newfound role, using his deft touch and vision to draw forwards Alex Terra and John Aloisi into the play.

The former Ajax and PSV striker though soon found himself with a chance to send Heart into the lead, sending his half-volleyed effort high.

But just after the break, Sibon turned provider, playing a low ball across the face of goal which found Aloisi at the back post, who applied the finishing touch to hand Heart the lead in the 50th minute.

Aloisi could have made it 2-0 soon after, but his effort from close range crashed into the cross bar after an Alex Terra effort was parried by Danny Vukovic.

Alex Terra though duly doubled the lead in the 66th minute, thundering home a rasping left foot drive after capitalising on impressive defensive work from Sibon.

Heart appeared rejuvenated in the second half, dazzling with its attacking, technical approach as Rutger Worm, Alex Terra and Sibon unlocked the Phoenix defence with a series of flicks and tricks.

But Tim Brown breathed life back into the contest in the 75th minute, volleying home a stellar cross from Ifill to ensure would be forced to fight to the final minute to secure its second win.
