Round Ball star Jenna McCormick will feature in the historic game 7 other girls who have participated in The Round Ball program.
When the Team of the Year was announced at the presentation night of the South East Women’s Football Association in September, players had no idea what was in store for them. These players, voted for by coaches from across the Association, received a certificate and the satisfaction of being named in the top 15 players of the league.
However, with the support of the Football Federation of SA and the Western Border Soccer Association, these players will now take to the pitch at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide this weekend.
The W League commences this weekend with Adelaide meeting Newcastle Jets in Round 1. A curtain raiser to welcome the season kicks off the proceedings at noon with our local team playing against the Riverland in what is sure to be a high quality match.
Coached by Stuart Birch, trainings have been well attended sessions and a practice match on Sunday highlighted why these players were chosen to represent their league, with exceptional displays of ball skills and match play. With the team selected from across seven SEWFA teams, players have been working hard to develop an understanding between team mates and refine their team performance.
Whilst the junior players of the league have the opportunity to participate in State and Country championships, there has been little to inspire older players to progress. However, this initiative provides senior players with the opportunity to participate at a higher level and to meet an equivalent side from another region.
Whilst excitement and anticipation builds at the prospect of playing on the magnificent Hindmarsh Stadium, players will be focussed when they hit the park and, with the support of family and friends in the stands, looking to claim an historic win in women’s football.
