EDUCATION FOR ALL

Over the last few days, Alishia and William spent their time visiting schools in the slums of Kampala, the Ugandan capital and also on the remote island community of Kalangala.

Whilst visiting the schools, the pair heard from the children and school administrators of the problems the children faced every day as they struggled to get an education. The problems ranged from the tangible - no textbooks and limited access to electricity and food, to the non-tangilble such as the lack of government support and the struggle for parents to choose between sending their child to school or sending them out to work to get money to eat - a very real decision for families in Uganda.

However they were also able to witness how these problems can be potentially overcome. The pair were shown firsthand the unique approach that ActionAid is taking to overcome these issues - focusing upon their rights and doing more for the community then building schools but also lobbying governments about the universal right to an education.

A couple of new videos recapping these last few emotional days have now been uploaded to the ActionAid 1Goal Young Ambassador Blog.

Thanks for making a difference.

Our big chance to score!

Can you believe it's already been 6 weeks since we heard the last World Cup vuvuzela blast?

But for the millions of us who came together for 1GOAL, our big chance to score the right to education for all the world's children is still ahead. And once again, we need your support to make it happen.

Here's the situation: In just a few short weeks, heads of state from every country in the world will gather in New York City for the United Nations Summit on the Millennium Development Goals. 10 years ago, world leaders committed to an ambitious plan to cut global poverty in half by 2015. Now with only five years left, it's time to assess how much progress we've made and agree on a plan to finish the job.

If we've learned one thing in the last 10 years, it's this: education beats poverty. Thats why two of the Millennium Development Goals discuss getting all boys and girls into school by 2015. So this upcoming summit is a huge chance to secure commitments from the world governments to make this dream a reality -- and end poverty once and for all.

But our governments won't act unless we citizens speak up -- and there's no time to lose.

As we speak, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is working on a plan for the summit that will determine its focus and how ambitious the proposals will be. To make real progress on education, this Summit Outcome Document must get it right. And thats where you come in.

Click here to send a short message to the Secretary General, letting him know that you support quality education for every child--and that you expect education to be a top priority at the Millennium Development Summit.

http://act.join1goal.org/ea-campaign/clientcampaign.do?ea.client.id=821&ea.campaign.id=7612%20

You've probably never been asked to write a UN official to influence the agenda of an upcoming global summit. It may even seem a little strange. But if we really want to make a different, we can't wait until the dignitaries land in New York and fill the headlines. We have to speak up now, when the outcome is still wide open for input.

You may not think you have the power to change what the leaders of all the world's governments discuss or decide. But if we work together, we can achieve anything. You've already told us you support education for all when you joined the 1GOAL campaign - so please take a moment now to tell the UN Secretary General the same thing. It is a crucial time -- please simply click below and sign your name on behalf of those who can't.

Send a short message to Ban Ki-Moon

THE ROUND BALL SUPPORTS 1 GOAL

Today, 72 million children around the world are denied the opportunity to go to school.

These children could be the next generation's leaders, sport stars, doctors and teachers. But without an education they are confined to a life of poverty. They’re ready to do their homework - but school fees, conflict, working in factories and farms, losing their parents to sickness, the cost of a school uniform or sometimes simply being a girl keeps them from being able to attend school. Whatever their background - orphans, refugees, poor, disabled, child soldiers, child labourers, from disadvantaged backgrounds – the result is the same – denied the chance to learn they will never be able to fulfil their potential.

Education beats Poverty – and enables people to help themselves. Education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty for families, communities and whole countries.

•It leads to economic growth, democracy and a more stable future.

•Education is the best tool we have for tackling poverty, and it is the one investment that ultimately pays for itself: When a child gets educated, they will eventually earn more and be better able to support their family.

•A child who goes to school will earn an extra 10% for every year of schooling they receive and be 50% less likely to become infected with HIV/AIDS if the complete Primary School.

•Education For All is urgently needed if we are to tackle poverty, ill health and hunger. An education can offer hope and a future to children in the developing world who desperately deserve a chance in life.

Why Join 1GOAL?
i) Education beats poverty but 72 million children across the world are still not in school

ii) World Leaders can change this and are coming together around the FIFA World Cup in 2010

iii) Join 1GOAL and ask world leaders to achieve a lasting legacy of education to everyone

What is 1GOAL?
1GOAL is a new campaign to ensure that every child worldwide has the opportunity to go to school and learn. 1GOAL is collecting names and support from the public, footballers and celebrities to make a united plea to all governments to meet their target on 'Education for All'.

What is 'Education for All'?
'Education for All' is the international commitment that world leaders have signed up to - to provide a good quality public education to all children and adults by 2015. The commitment includes prioritising those who are currently missing out on an education, getting them into school, and making sure when they're in school they get the chance to learn, with qualified teachers. They goals include giving adults who missed out on school, the chance to learn to read and write. Find out more on the UNESCO website.

When I join 1GOAL where does my name go?
By joining 1GOAL you join the 1GOAL petition of people who want to make sure everyone gets an education. 1GOAL will deliver the millions of names to governments ahead of the next UN meeting on 'Millennium Development Goals' in September 2010, asking them to ensure that the education goals are met by the 2015 deadline.

How can I help 1GOAL?
1. It's simple, just join 1GOAL by filling in the petition found anywhere on this website such as the one found at the top of this very page. If you agree to us sending you emails, we'll let you know what's happening at 1GOAL, and send you information about what you can do to encourage leaders.
2. Ask your friends and colleagues to join 1GOAL
3. Become a fan of 1GOAL on Facebook page
4. Tweet about 1GOAL. Follow our Twitter Feed and tweet using the #1GOAL. You're comment will then appear on the 1GOAL international website here

How do I get my class or school involved in 1GOAL?
The best way to get your class or school involved in 1GOAL is by taking part in the 1GOAL Lesson. Join over a million schools that will have carried out the 1GOAL lesson. For more information check out our Get Involved page, or contact us here at info@join1goal.org.au

How did 1GOAL start?
1GOAL is the initiative of the football strand of the Class of 2015: Education for All. The Class of 2015 was set up at the UN in September 2008 by the Global Campaign for Education to ensure that the Education for All goals are met by 2015. Class members include FIFA, international charities, celebrities and some governments. Visit the Class of 2015 website

Who's signed up to 1GOAL?
Every day the 1GOAL team is growing! Those in the team include Tim Cahill, Vinnie Grella, Sarah Walsh, Zinedine Zidane, Rio Ferdinand, Thierry Henry, Robinho, Michael Essien, Aaron Mokoena, Nwankwo Kanu, Nicolas Anelka, Mikael Silvestre, David James, Kolo Touré, Javier Zanetti, Michael Owen, Mia Hamm, Marcel Desailly, Sir Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker.

The team continues with many non-footballers including Queen Rania of Jordan, FIFA's President Sepp Blatter, Jessica Alba, Clive Owen, Kevin Spacey, Bono, Bob Geldof and Kelly Rowland and many more. Other 1GOAL supporters include private companies and international charities. To see all the supporters and partner organisations internationally, check out our Supporters page

Who's missing out on an education?
i) 72 million children are not in school.
ii) 776 million adults cannot read this sentence.
iii) The majority of children denied an education are girls.

Why are 72 million children not in school?
Children are excluded from school for a number of reasons - because of illness, HIV, disability, because they live in an area of conflict, or are discriminated against because of their background. Millions don't make it to school simply because they are too poor. Their families can't afford the school fees that some governments still charge, or they are being put to work to support their family either at home, on the farm or in factories.

But we know how to change this. Since the Global Campaign for Education started, some governments have listened, providing more aid, or free schooling, and more than 40 million children previously without an education now have the chance to go to school. The world has the resources and capacity to give every child this chance. But we need every government to make this a reality. Join 1GOAL and we'll deliver your name to world leaders asking them to ensure everyone goes to school.

Why is education so important?
i) Education reduces the chances of being infected with HIV/AIDS.
ii) A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past the age of five.
iii) One year of schooling can increase a person's earnings by 10%.

THANK YOU. We do need you. We'll only get everyone in school if millions of people say it's important and ask for change. Thanks for joining the 1GOAL team, and helping those who don't have an education. We need you and as many other people as you can help get involved in 1GOAL: Education for All.

Have you seen this line-up?‏

Dear scott,

Have you heard that Cristiano Ronaldo, Pele, Zinedine Zidane, Tim Howard, Rio Ferdinand, Marcel Desailly, Michael Essien, Paolo Maldini, Ji-Sung Park and Aaron Mokoena are all playing for the same team this World Cup?

In fact, 201 world-class football stars, 63 clubs and associations, 31 celebrities and world leaders have all joined over 10 million fans, including you, to sign for this team – the 1GOAL Squad. They’ve joined the squad by making a statement to world leaders – like you did when signing up to 1GOAL – that we support education for all children.

The 1GOAL Squad is dedicated to scoring the most important goal this World Cup: a quality education for every child. And our next big chance to put one in the back of the net will come the morning of the World Cup Final, when leaders are gathering in South Africa to discuss the global education crisis.

Every time someone new joins the Squad, the call for universal education grows louder. When leaders gather on July 11th before heading to the final match, we need to be louder than a stadium full of vuvuzelas.

To win, the best squad needs the best players. You can help our squad by asking your friends to sign up.

So please take a moment to give the football fans in your life the chance to join you on the greatest squad of all this World Cup.

Just send them the link to join, http://www.join1goal.org/1goal_squad.php or pass on the message below.

Thanks for always keeping your head in the game,
The 1GOAL Squad

10 million by Saturday?‏

Dear Scott,

Unprecedented momentum has been building towards this moment – with over nine million people already supporting the 1GOAL call across the globe, through a range of exciting activities. Can we reach 10 million before the halfway stage of the tournament?

It couldn’t come at a better time: now the South African President has invited world leaders to a summit at the end of the World Cup to discuss the plan to get every child into school. This is the perfect opportunity, as the campaign for the World Cup ends, to focus on the campaign for universal education.

Now you have the chance to help this campaign reach an amazing 10 million supporters, at this crucial moment, by issuing your own Yellow Card calling on world leaders to guarantee schooling for every child:

www.join1goal.org/r/yellowcard

World leaders need to agree on a plan to provide education, and to do that they’ll need to hear from all of us united in our demand to make education the lasting legacy of this World Cup. That’s where you come in.

If countries’ governments don’t believe there is a global demand for action on education, they won’t agree to fix the problem. Issue your own Yellow Card calling on world leaders to guarantee education for every child, and we’ll deliver it directly to them:

www.join1goal.org/r/yellowcard

Our nine million supporters are drawn from cities, towns, and villages in over 120 countries, and have shown their support in an incredible range of ways. Teachers, students, local education activists, football fans and celebrities have all rallied, and whether they’re doing it using email, mobile phone, social networks or attending the World’s Biggest Lesson, we are becoming a global voice too large for world leaders to ignore.

In villages throughout Bangladesh, thousands of children have taken part in football matches in support of 1GOAL, joining 194,097 fellow Bangladeshis who have sent SMS messages to join the call for education for all.

In Senegal, the Senegalese President invited hundreds of 1GOAL supporters to the Presidential Palace where he made a public commitment to the 1GOAL campaign and its aim of making sure every child receives an education.

While in the United States, 1GOAL received national attention when the Good Morning America TV program visited a South African school in Soweto with the 1GOAL team.

You can be part of this global movement building momentum towards a world where every child is guaranteed an education, by sending your own Yellow Card to world leaders before the World Cup Final:

www.join1goal.org/r/yellowcard

This opportunity is too good to miss – global attention will be on Africa, and world leaders will be pressed on the issue of education. Help us reach 10 million supporters by filling out your Yellow Card today.

Thanks for making a difference,
The 1GOAL team.

Kick off!‏

Dear scott,

Today's the big kick off! World Cup 2010 has finally begun.

As 1GOAL fans, we're all looking for least two things to happen during the tournament: Our favourite team to hit the back of the net -- preferably more than once -- and a global call for universal education loud enough to make it happen.

Today, we get a chance to help make both these dreams come true by taking on the new 1GOAL, 1Friend challenge.

Here's how it works: First, sign up online, pledging that for every goal your favourite team scores during the World Cup, you'll ask at least 1 friend to send a special yellow card to world leaders, urging them to swiftly secure quality education for all.

We'll add up the pledges and deliver them directly to each squad -- so they'll know every goal they score will grow the global campaign to give 72 million children a shot at a better future.

We can make education for all the permanent legacy of the 2010 World Cup. But with the first match kicking off in just a few hours, there's no time to lose. Please sign up for the 1GOAL, 1Friend challenge today:

www.join1goal.org/r/1g1f/

Inviting your friends is easy. After your team scores a goal, we'll send you all the info you need and the link to our special yellow card petition, calling on world leaders to guarantee education for all.

We'll deliver all the yellow cards from you and your friends directly to world leaders at the Education Summit in Cape Town, happening just before the final match in July.

Top government officials from all over the world will meet there to discuss the 72 million children who are still denied a basic education. How much they are willing to do will depend on how loud our voice becomes.

That's why FIFA, top footballers from Ronaldo to Pele, global superstars like Shakira and millions of football fans from every nation have come together to support 1GOAL for World Cup 2010 -- Education for All.

For the players on the pitch, fans around the world, and the children who are counting on us for a better future, let's make the 2010 World Cup a victory to remember.

Please sign up for the 1GOAL, 1Friend challenge today:
