The Round Ball has returned from the South West Games in Warrnambool as Under 15 Champions for the second time in three years. Competing in the Under 13 and Under 15 age divisions The Mount Gambier based Community Football Projects sides dominated the minor rounds winning every game and finishing top of the table in their divisions. CEO of The Round Ball, Scott Dickson was very impressed with their performance and heaped praise on both teams. “I was incredibly impressed with the quality of football on show. We have a focus on high quality football rather than the result as we believe that if we play to the best of our ability a good result will
follow. On Sunday that was certainly the case.”
The Under 13 squad defeated North United, The Panthers, Portland and the Warrnambool Wolves Yellow side on the way to the semi final and after being held 1 all at half time against North United Black went on the attack in the second half running out eventual winners 5 goals to 1.
The Under 15s made similar progress defeating the Warrnambool Wolves, Hamilton and Portland on the way to a top of the table clash against the Warrnambool Rangers A side. “We went into the game fixture against the Rangers knowing that we had to win to progress to the final and despite sitting locked together at the top of the table we recorded a strong victory.” The 11 nil win set tongues wagging and resulted in The Round Ball topping the group only conceding 1 goal in 5 fixtures.
The Under 15 saw The Round Ball take on Portland and in the final game of the day it was The Round Ball that once again displayed fine skills to cruise to a 7 nil victory. “I am very proud of both squads.” Dickson stated. “They played great football and conducted themselves well both on and off the park. It is our second under 15 title at the South West Games in three years and seventh time we have made a grand final in this tournament for our third South West Games Championship.”

"The fact that this side has players from every Mount Gambier club, an under 13 player and 2 under 14s is a real testament to the qualities of these players", Dickson added.

U15 SUCCESS AT SWG

Our under 15 South West Games squad swept all before them yesterday cruising to victory in the under 15 competition for the second time in 3 years. In what can only be discribed as an outstanding performance The Round Ball defeated the Wolves 4 nil, Hamilton Rovers 7 nil, Portland 5 to 1, Warrnambool Rangers A 11 nil, Warrnambool Rangers B 7 nil and in the final Portland 7 nil.

U/13 SWG SQUADS SHINES

Congratulations to our under 13 SWG squad who made the grand final in Warrnambool yesterday. The squad cruised through the group stages and recorded a stunning 5 to 1 win in the semi final. In the final, the young squad ran out of legs against a physicaly stronger Wolves outfit.

SOUTH WEST GAMES SUCCESS

The draw for the South West Games has been released and once again The Round Ball will be entering an u13 and u15 side. We have entered junior sides the last two opportunities and have made the final in both grades on both occassions and have returned u15 winners on one occassion and runner up once and runner up both times in the u13 competition.

The Round Ball will travel to Warrnambool on October 31 to take part in the South West Games.

Our u13 and u15 squads will take part in the games.

With fixtures on the horizon it is a good time to look at who has represented The Round Ball and what they have achieved. The U/13 squad that competed in the South West Games last year went through the minor rounds undefeated and lost the grand final 2 goals to 1. A fantastic effort for such a young squad.

Soccer boasts 700 players: South West Games to host 70 teams from two states

SOCCER will kick off a week ahead of the South West Games in Warrnambool to accommodate a record field of teams.
Competition organiser John McMillan said soccer would be held over consecutive weekends for the first time.
Juniors are scheduled for Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26 at Harris Street Reserve, followed by women on Saturday, November 1 and men on Sunday, November 2.
The games will be officially opened on Friday, October 31, ahead of two weeks of sporting competition.
Hosted by Warrnambool Wolves Soccer Club, the seven-a-side soccer competition has attracted 70 teams from across Victoria and South Australia.
McMillan estimates about 700 players will participate, which he says makes soccer the biggest sport of the games.
"That's not bad when we started off the smallest," he said, recalling the search for an opponent about 20 years ago when he first assembled a Warrnambool team to play at the games.
"People want something different and that's where we came up with the seven-a-side idea. It's just grown from there."
The South West Games soccer gained metropolitan media exposure about a decade ago and Melbourne teams have made the trip to Warrnambool ever since.
Others travel from Geelong, Ararat, Ballarat, Stawell, Mount Gambier, Horsham, Colac and Lara.
The Wolves are represented across all grades by 17 teams.

I was very proud of both our squads that participated in The South West Games.
It was our first real competition and provided a great chance to see how we have developed during the FUTSAL program.
Both sides were filled with under age players with players as young as 10 playing in our under 13 squad and only 2 boys in our under 15 squad.
The under 13 squad went through the entire day undefeated until they came across the home team Warrnambool Wolves in the final and went down 2 goals to 1.
The under 15s lost one game in the group stage and went on to reverse the result in the grand final defeating Horsham in the final on penalties.
