SEWFA GAME ON

The wait is nearly over for round 1 of SEWFA’s 2009 season.

Following on from the pre-season carnival held recently, the first senior matches kick off this Saturday at Blue Lake Sports Park.
County and Portland will clash in the first game of 2009, with County looking to make amends for their defeat against Portland during the carnival. With both teams under the guidance of new coaches to the league, each will be looking to take the honours in what should be an exciting and evenly matched game.

At 3pm Villa meet the finely tuned City, in a match which should see City take the points. Villa are reeling from the loss of quality players from last year, and were undermanned during the carnival, forfeiting their matches. Hopefully, some successful recruiting by coach Chris Harris will see Villa reform to be the premiership contender they were in 2008.

Wanderers take on Palace at 3pm in a rematch of both the carnival final and the 2008 league final, which saw Palace claim the prize on each occasion. Wanderers will be keen to meet Palace again so soon to gain some retribution. It will be essential for Palace to have their squad firing and showing persistence if they are to break down the rock solid Wanderers defence, who will be looking for a quick break to turn the tide.

Millicent host United in the first away game of the series. If Millicent have their full contingent of players, United will have to be wary of this youthful side who will be eager to claim the first points of the season on their home turf. With a mix of youth and experience, a focussed approach will be needed by United if they are to keep Millicent in check and claim the points.
In a mirror of the senior draw, Palace will meet Wanderers and City clash with Villa in the Under 14 fixtures. Wanderers claimed the league premiers last year and if the carnival is anything to go by, look to be strong contenders again this year. Villa, however, also lay claim to some strength and speed in their side and should also perform well this season. But at this stage of the season, anything can happen
