From wooden spoon recipients to the top 16 in Asia, Newcastle Jets have put last season’s dismal title defence behind them to make the knock-out stages of the ACL this week. Needing only a point to progress, the Jets travelled to Korea and claimed all three points off Ulsan Hyundai, with Jason Hoffman grabbing the winner. Unfortunately the Central Coast Mariners’ miserable ACL foray ended with another loss, this time to dive-happy Tianjin Teda. Elsewhere, Fulham are in talks with Mark Schwarzer about a new contract to keep the veteran goalkeeper at Craven Cottage beyond 2010 and the latest FourFourTwo Insider podcast, your weekly aural enema of Australian and world football, is available now, with added Brian McFadden!

PS : The June issue of FourFourTwo is on sale now - or subscribe now. This month we speak to Australia’s number one Mark Schwarzer about chasing Europe with Fulham and not getting complacent before our place in South Africa is sealed. We also grill assistant coach Graham Arnold on his time in the Socceroos hot-seat and ask European club fans what they really think of their Australian players. Elsewhere we catch-up with world player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo, Brazilian superstar Pato, would-be $250m man Kaka and ask why it has taken so long for Arsenal’s Andrey Arshavin to shine on the world stage?
