MATCH REPORTS
NARACOORTE V GAMBIER CITY SHARKS
After last week’s thrilling victory over Blue Lake, the Sharks camp were very confident of a win against Naracoorte.
In preparing for the game, a number of changes were made, as a result of injuries and availability of players, they included Simon Minter, Jeremy Nunan, Josh Thomas, Brendan Bytheway being included
With Craig Wright, Scott Murray, Jason Brooks and Damien Stemberger (suspension) being unavailable this week.
The message from the Coach Ian Hill was to attack them and hit them hard right from the start of the game, and the players did not disappoint there coach.
Thomas started the game by passing the ball to Jon Stemberger, and immediately found his way through the Naracoorte midfield, took a well timed shot at goal, and in record time (6 seconds) scored the first goal for the Sharks.
This started what was going to be a ‘feeding’ frenzy on goal for the Sharks.
The Sharks players were all ‘pumped’ after this amazing goal, and were determined to continue to attack.
With midfielders Weistra , Marlow, Nunan & Minter linking up well together with forwards Stemberger & Thomas continually feeding onto the loose ball in the goal area and converting goal after goal. Sharks have been criticised in the past for their ability to convert goal scoring opportunities, however with improved training attendances and successful shooting drills, this has certainly paid off for their historic win over Naracoorte United today.
Young Thomas was looking dangerous, chasing down loose balls and putting the Naracoorte defence under pressure.
This allowed Stemberger to pounce on any loose balls inside the box and ensure the scoreboard kept ticking over.
Some of the ‘memorable’ goals scored today were as follows;
A free kick was awarded to Weistra as he making his way to goal.
Lennon the dedicated free kick taker, was still fully charged after his wonder strike last week that secured the win for the Sharks, placed the ball in position.
The ball was stuck firmly into the United wall of players, it bounced back towards Lennon, who followed a with another powerful kick that found the top right hand corner of the goal. (4-0)
Simon Minter found a loose ball just outside the 18 yd box, and struck a perfect left footer which curled into the goal, giving the goalie no chance of stopping.
Nunan who played an ‘attacking’ wing received plenty of possession and was able to run down the wing, cross the ball and find Stemberger unmarked taking shots at goal, which awarded him his ‘double hatrick’ for the day.
Young Weistra who played a different role that normally used to worked hard all day, chasing down and his second ball gets, was a reason for the amount of loose balls and goals scored for the day.
Weistra persisted all game, and wanted to ensure his name was amongst the goal scorers for the Sharks.
Lennon was at his best, controlling the midfield from defence to the forwards, and was creative with his through balls, which found the Sharks forwards hungry to score.
Widdison who is very versatile, and can play in any position on the park, often found himself pushing forward, and giving defenders a hard time, but also ensuring that he was able to get back and defend if needed.
Marlow one of the Sharks best players for the day, converted from (35yds) out after displaying some fancy footwork.
Marlow’s work rate helped distribute the ball from the defence to their forwards, and allowing plenty of opportunities for goal.
Sharks had 8 goal scorers today (J.Stemberger 6, J.Nunan 2, M.Weistra 2, J.Thomas 2,W.Lennon 1, R.Marlow 1,S.Minter 1,L.DaRocha 1 )
Not forgetting Sharks defence, Dino Gentile, Heath Widdison, Terry Stevenson were solid all day, not allowing United anywhere near goal.
There wasn’t much action required from GK Wil Bytheway, who was sensational the week before against Blue Lake.
Overall, it was a record win for the Sharks..(highest amount of goals scored in the history of the Sharks), and will be a good percentage booster to ensure placement in the Top 4 on the ladder.
Next week will be a much more difficult encounter against Millicent at home.
The last time these teams met, the Sharks were winning 4-1 when the game was abandoned due to a spectator attacking a Sharks player, resulting in the much publicised melee that happened in the last round in 2008.
The Coach was happy with the ‘overall’ performance, as he described, ‘Its not how many goals you score, it’s how the goals are created’, which he was pleased with the teamwork shown from this young enthusiastic team of the Sharks.
