Leading Western Border Soccer Association club, Centrals will take to the pitch against Portland this week under the guidance of its president following the resignation of senior coach Phil Muller.
Muller approached Centrals president Mr Shane Dycer on Tuesday morning to deliver the news, regrettably giving up the position due to increasing work commitments.
Mr Dycer said Muller came to him and asked him to take over the role for the remainder of the season.
Now mid way through the roster, Mr Dycer said it would have been too hard to look for a new coach so he agreed to take the reigns and serve his fifth term for the club.
“A top four finish will be the major focus for the rest of the year, we have probably blown our chance at a premiership with last week’s loss.
“I have a few things I want to implement for the rest of the season which will include building up our young blokes.”
Muller (45) was appointed coach of Centrals last December and had the team in good form this season, despite last Saturday’s 0 – 5 loss to top team International.
Centrals are currently third on the premiership table with six wins, two losses and a draw.
Muller is a four time premiership player with Centrals and won the A grade best and fairest seven times.
He is also a past winner of the Western Border Soccer Association’s best and fairest award.
But Centrals performance in the Shadows-Belgiorno Cup was not quite as impressive.
Starting as the defending champions, Centrals failed to reach the semi-finals of the popular mid-season tournament.
Mr Dycer said injuries to key players had given several young players the opportunity to play senior football.
Mr Dycer said there were positive signs for the future of the club with the reserves playing strongly and all three junior sides travelling well.
Mr Dycer began playing for Centrals in 1982 and has been club president for the past eight years and coached the senior side from 2004 – 06 and then again in 2008.
He stepped down from the role this season due to work and family commitments.
During his time at the helm, Mr Dycer led the club to several pre-season titles and strong finishes, including runner-up in the four seasons he coached.
Muller will continue his involvement with the club as a life member and will continue to strap the boots on in the reserves.
