Your Week in Football
We knew it was going to happen at some point. It was more inevitable than Iain Fyfe spooning the ball into Row Z under no pressure, but in the end it only took four rounds. They were a new franchise still gelling but some were starting to believe they actually could do it - North Queensland Fury have managed to earn an A-League point.
Melbourne Victory continued to fall victim to the champions hoodoo, with another defeat, this time to a Perth Glory side looking more accomplished with every game, but saying that it's hardly difficult considering past seasons.
Brisbane continued their annual voyage to mid-table mediocrity before a swift end-of-season finals exit with a "hard-fought" (which means boring with very few goals) 1-0 win over the Mariners.
Yesterday we witnessed the Gold Coast lose an A-League game. In the spirit of getting over-excited by early season results, we've just number crunched and on average the GCU boys lose a quarter or 25% of their games. That's rubbish. However we suspect the defeat was linked with United's Jason Culina fearing another dressing down from Culina senior had he inspired a defeat over his father's team. Witness a reconstruction of the early Culina years here.
In the final A-League game this weekend, Sydney fired themselves to the top of the table with a patient 2-0 win over Wellington Phoenix. Better still, a FourFourTwo employee took to the field before the game as Dunbar Rovers became the new champions of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs Association after a nine goal thriller saw them defeat Waverley Old Boys 6-3 at the SFS. Futureheads look-a-like and FFT sales bod Mike Hemmingway bagged the fifth goal.
