MAJOR SOCCER TOURNAMENT COMING TO THE MOUNT GAMBIER

Players from the PFAA after winning the Intercontinental Academy Cup in Malaysia last year.
The Round Ball, Mount Gambier’s community football development program will host the National Championships of the Australian Premier Football Academy next week at Grant High School.
The tournament will bring over 150 soccer players to Mount Gambier and will provide the opportunity for local soccer players to measure their standard against the best that the city has on offer.
“We are delighted that the championships will once again be held in the Limestone Coast” said Round Ball CEO Scott Dickson. “These championships provide local soccer enthusiasts with the opportunity to see some of the best junior footballers going around” added Dickson.
“In 2005 Hayden Doyle visited the region and played at Gambier Centrals home ground, a year later he was an apprentice at Stoke City who are now in the English Premier League and he is now at Perth Glory. Who knows who will be found at these Championships”.
The tournament, now in its fifth year, provides the opportunity for players based at the Melbourne based APFA and the Adelaide based PFSAA to be selected to tour the UK and Asia later in the year, for local players it is the opportunity to play against players that won the Intercontinental Academy Cup in Malaysia last year and players that will play against Europe’s top Academy teams this year that Dickson believes is the driving force.
The Round Ball will take part in all grades fielding under 10s right through to under 17 squads that will compete in futsal, 7 aside and 11 aside competitions.
Dickson is realistic about the tournament but remains confident despite the standard of the opposition “our players are very good, I have no doubt that we have players who are every bit as talented as the opposition, it is the quality over the park that is the difficulty all regional squads face. We are looking forward to the opportunity to be involved in such a tournament”

The tournament will be boosted by the inclusion of Eddie" Krnčević as a special guest.
"We are delighted that Eddie will be attendeing the championships" added Dickson. "He is an Australian soccer legend who not only played for the Socceroos but also had a very succesfull stint as a manager."

The son of Croatian immigrants, Krnčević played most of his professional career in Belgium.
