SHARKS 3 v BLUE LAKE 1
11/4/2010
Last years “Shadows/Belgiorno Cup” winners Blue Lake, travel to Shark Park in Round 1 of the “Belgiorno Cup” in Season 2010.
The ‘new’ look Sharks team welcomes young gun Tobbei Kennett, ex Lions & Sharks Matthew Gordon back, as well as new talent Noel Wood (Nth Qld) ,Okezie Nzeakor(Nigeria) & Sebastiano Bruttomesso (Italy).
Sharks also welcome back ‘their exciting goalkeeper Norton Fuller, who has been absent from the game since 2008, and he is very excited to be playing keeper again at the Sharks.
Sharks have 6 players from the 2007 U17 Premiership side, that went through the season undefeated, and also claimed the Belgiorno Cup.
These players were Damian Stemberger, Heath Widdison, Norton Fuller , Tobbei Kennett, Matt Weistra, Brayden Nunan.
The game started at a fast and nervous pace, where both teams have been itching to play.
It was the Sharks that dominated early attack, where many shots came very close.
Midfielders Tobbei Kennett, Matt Gordon controlled the midfield both playing with much enthusiasm and linking up with another young gun Matt Weistra who showed early signs of things to come, however the Blue Lake rangers defense was holding strong and did not allow away through.
Sharks suffered an injury to captain Lance Da Rocha, who has a suspect injury to the knee which could see him out for several weeks. This gave U17 captain Brayden Nunan a chance to play with the Seniors.
It was the Rangers who managed to steal the first goal, as the ball deflected of the post and rebounded into the back of Fuller, the ball had crossed the line. With 15 minutes to go until half time, the Sharks rebounded quickly , with Matt Weistra scoring the first for the Sharks , finishing some fine passes from the Sharks midfield. Newcomer Noel Wood, showed early signs of his capabilities, where he was inches from scoring .
The defence of the Sharks held off numerous attempts by Rangers speedster Tristan Guess, who at times looked threatening.
The Half time Score was 1-1.
Both teams eager to get their first win for the season.
Some good team passing and their confident growing, the Sharks continually attack, and it wasn’t long until Noel Wood slotted home his debut goal for the Sharks ,from a well placed pass across the goal face which placed the Sharks in front.
Blue Lake Rangers were feeling the heat, without their Champion player Callum Ferguson.
It was the decision making that give the Sharks the upperhand, when a goal was awarded to Matt Wesitra, who caught the Rangers with scoring a controversial goal which the referee awarded.
The score 3-1
Another substitution was made, newcomer Wood coming off after suffering a corkie in the first half. Wood was replaced with Sebastiano Bruttomesso, who had played a previous game in the B Grade, showing the crowd the talent he brings to the side.
The Sharks defence of Stevenson, Stemberger, Widdison , Nzeakor, held strong all day, while keeper Fuller wasn’t required to make many saves.
The talent of Weistra, Kennett,Gordon caused some headaches for the Rangers defence and kept Amandi busy ensuring the scoreline wouldn’t increase. Consistent effort from Bytheway who played up forward and also defended well whenever Blue Lake look damaging.
The final score was 3-1
Sharks newly appointed coach Byron Deak, was very pleased with the result as it gave an indication of what the season could present.

match report prepared by John Bruttomesso.
