OFFICIAL SEWFA REPORT

SEWFA season 2010 continued at Blue Lake Sports Park last week for round 2 of matches. With no upsets or blow out scorelines, matches proved to be tightly contested at this early stage of the season.

SENIORS
Villa 4 d Millicent 1
Stung from their heavy defeat last week, Villa set out to prove their worth this week claiming three goals before the break. Monique Iannella had plenty of run in her after a stint in goals in the junior match, and her close ball skills and change of pace wore her counterparts down and left goal keeper Hannah Kent little chance with finely placed shots on goal. However, Millicent were not going to let Villa have it all their own way and also made the scorecard thanks to Michelle Lines. Amy Long, who pulled on the gloves for Villa, proved a worthy goalkeeper, denying Millicent any addition to their scoreline.
Goal scorers:
Villa – M Iannella 2, K Reade, M Wilmot
Millicent – M Lines

Palace 5 d United 1
A friendly but nonetheless interesting rivalry has developed between these teams, with 6 United players trading their blue strips for red over recent years. After the initial opening flutters from Palace, they settled into their trademark passing game with Jenna McCormick, recently accepted into the State Schoolgirl team, dominating play in front of goal but United defence limited her to a solitary goal. Bec Hillyer also enjoyed her run on the park and was thrilled to claim two tenacious goals. During the second half, after a break on the sidelines, Keisha Seiler returned to the park inspired and quickly broke through Palace defence and claimed her third in two weeks. Aneleise Truman proved versatile in her shift from the backline to attack, showing her ability to cross the ball into goal scoring positions on many occasions.
Palace – Y Thompson 2, B Hillyer 2, J McCormick
United – K Seiler

Wanderers 3 d County 0
Three goals in the first half, gave Wanderers the confidence to pass the ball around and deny County possession. Kendall Saffin was able to receive and distribute to her team mates with Zoe Scott looking dangerous on several occasions and slotting one home. With coach D’Agostino utilising his players well, County were able to shut down further attacks on goal with strong defensive efforts from Shana Morgan and Katrina Hockey preventing any addition to the scoreline in the second half.
Wanderers – L McCallum 2, Z Scott

City 1 d Portland 0
Meeting Portland on their home turf is no easy task, with last year’s premiers only managing a draw in their last meeting. With this knowledge, City were well prepared for a battle of the defences. As the game wore on, the experience of Tania Grant in midfield began to dominate and a through ball saw striker Jen Smith make no mistake, giving City the lead in the first half. However, Portland refused to concede defeat with Liz Santucci and Rachael Bennett pressing forward forcing City into some sharp defensive work. The visitors breathed a sign of relief at the final whistle and were happy to bring home the 3 points.

City – J Smith

UNDER 14S
Villa 3 d Millicent 0 (forfeit)
Recent signings for Millicent juniors will see them field a full side in coming weeks, however for the time being, current players are gaining valuable match practice playing in forfeited matches. Even with the knowledge they are unable to claim match points, these girls are still willing to travel and play against tough oppositions. With this spirit and determination, when Millicent do compete, they will form a impressive lineup.

Wanderers 4 d City 2
City’s Jess Stephenson once again demonstrated her marked improvement in ball control and game play, scoring two before the break. Despite taking to the park with just 10 players and facing a 2-1 deficit at half time, Wanderers were able to lift considerably and netted 3 after the break, with Monique Sims and Kate Lehmann proving difficult to contain in attack. Lucy Greenham in goals for City was able to save many shots on goal and showed confidence in her position.
Goal scorers:
Wanderers – K Lehmann 2, J White, M Sims
City – J Stephenson 2

Palace 3 d County 0
Experience proved to be the winner on Saturday when Palace eventually took the points. With neither side able to capitalise in attack, County would have returned to the park after the half time break buoyed by their defensive efforts. However, positional awareness and determination saw Palace get over the line with Ashlae Pilven and Eleanor McClintock demonstrating both vision and leadership on the park. With several new players recruited to the game from the summer 7-a-side including Meagan Nattrass and Shae Thomson, it won’t be long before County take points from other teams as they become more at ease on the full size pitch.
Goal scorers:
Palace – A Pilven, S McCarthy, I Pratt

The Junior Development Squad showed improvement in the second half of their match with Julia Alvey and Manon Finch demonstrating some excellent passing and teamwork for a well worked goal.

This week at noon, County will play City and Palace compete against Villa in the Under 14 fixtures.
Senior matches will see Villa take on Portland at 1.30pm in the match of the round, while County will test Palace and City meet United at 3pm. Millicent remain at home to host Wanderers in both senior and junior grades.
