City 0 drew with Wanderers 0
Wanderers walked onto the pitch knowing it would be a long, tough afternoon against the top side. Neither team wasted any time, each seeking supremacy but were denied by strong defensive work from the respective backlines. During the first half, City’s Mads Thompson held the ball up well and laid off some fine passes for her sprinting attacking team mates. A nil-nil scoreline at half time saw some strategic moves from coaches, searching for the edge. Hayley Philp was impressive in the Wanderer’s midfield, winning the ball and passing effectively to teammates. City’s Tracey Kourmouzis showed determination along the wing and provided accurate passes in attack. However, Wanderer’s Karlie Moy proved she was comfortable in goals, coming off her line when required and showed no fear when faced with hard running forwards. The game was cut prematurely short by just a few minutes when a player collapsed and could not be moved for some time. A scoreless draw resulted, with Wanderers content to be the first team to take points from the dominant City.
Villa 1 drew with County 1
Knowing a loss would see Villa fall from a top four position, a determined maroon side hit the park refusing to let that placing slide. A see-sawing game developed with defenders winning the ball, working the ball forward, a failed shot on goal then the situation reversed. The break came from a Villa free kick just over the half way line. As County pushed up, a well placed ball saw Villa break from the offside trap and slot the ball home to take the lead. Paige Ransom dominated on the ball for County, using her body strength very well when Villa attempted to steal the ball from her. As usual Tania Widdison in a defensive midfield position gave attackers close attention, denying settling time on the ball, forcing errors. Villa’s Kelsey Reade showed great coolness under pressure for a youngster and played with great maturity. County equalised during the second half with a finely placed shot. As Villa sought to regain the lead, Jacinda Wood made her presence felt up front but a resolute defence denied any further goals.

Palace 4 d Millicent 0
Windy conditions made for a frustrating start to the game, with each team struggling to lay effective passes on the ground. Tess Andrews took on the role of sweeper for Palace and played with great composure, denying any forward runs from the home side. Millicent’s keeper Hannah Kent was able to keep a clean sheet to the break, comfortably collecting any shots on goal. Eleanor McClintock played her defensive role exceptionally well for Palace, running wide and providing quality through balls for her midfield. A quick break along the line saw her strike from well outside the 18 yard box and a deflection saw the ball hit the back of the net. Kimberley Vivian’s ability to read the play is an asset for Millicent and combined with her speed and prowess on the ball, she is developing into a handful to contain. Using the wind to their advantage in the second half, Palace were able to gain the ascendency of the match and bring home the three points.

The huge improvers of the league would have to be the County defence as they soak up so much pressure each week, developing their skills as they go. Under the pump from kick off, with Bree Thomson in goals, County were able to form their own attacks on the Wanderer’s goal with Taylah Cella unlucky in front of goals on several occasions, with her shots just skimming wide of the post. Winona Green and Monique Simms stamped their authority on the midfield, providing support for both forwards and defenders, pushing forward when needed, with Simms scoring a hat-trick of her own.

As each team settled into game play, City’s Jess Verhoeven’s tight marking role was causing some headaches for Villa, as it had to work hard to edge the ball into attack. The inclusion of Janaye Donaldson on the park proved a crucial for Villa, with Donaldson providing a valuable link between the defence and forwards, with her fine distribution. As Villa gained ascendency on the pitch, both teams welcomed the half time whistle to recover and regroup ready for the next half. Angela Bennett was rock solid in Villa’s backline, providing coverage for full backs when necessary and clearing the ball. Erin Ireland played in City’s backline and without her critcal input to the match, the score could have increased, however her pressure on ball holders forced errors and turnovers.

Palace 7 d Millicent 0
Palace welcomed new signing Hailey Taleporos to the side as it made the road trip to Millicent. Even though short of players for this match, the determination from the Palace girls proved difficult to contain for the home team. Ashlae Pilven showed she is as comfortable in the forward line as she is in her usual defensive role, scoring three with powerful, well placed strikes. However, with players like Katelyn Canala and Delaney Thrussell showing vast improvement each week, it won’t be long before Millicent find themselves scoring some goals and climbing up the ladder.

Eleven girls turned up to take part in the Junior Development Squad match, showing great commitment to play in wild, wet weather. As the season progresses, so does the playing standard of this squad, with all girls demonstrating excellent team play last Saturday and incorporating some of the skills learnt at training into their game. The future of SEWFA looks bright with these girls the rising stars of the Association.
This week could again see some movement in the points’ ladder as City play Palace at 1.30pm in a match that will decide top spot, followed by United v Millicent and Villa v Wanderers at 3pm. Junior fixtures include County against City and Palace v Villa at 12noon, followed by a Wanderers/Millicent clash at 1.30pm.
