While the fine weather lasts, SEWFA matches continue to be a delight for spectators at Blue Lake Sports Park.

Seniors

City 4 d County 0
Even though City took an early lead in the match, County’s determination did not diminish. In what has been dubbed the “play of the season thus far”, Angie Paspaliaris was able to win the ball in County’s midfield, evade a defender and strike with force from 20 metres. Keeper Lauren Lowe executed a spectacular save, mid air just tipping the ball over the cross bar. Buoyed with this skilful display, City stepped up the pace and was able to beat the offside trap and slot another home before the half time break. Jess Hann worked hard in County’s forward line but was denied by close marking from Eboney Gilbert. Disciplined play from City saw them add a further two, including a penalty, to seal the match.

Palace 3 d Wanderers 1
With second spot on the ladder up for grabs from the fixture, a tight match was in the offing. Initially Palace found they could not penetrate the Wanderers backline marshalled by Eme Ripper however about 15 minutes in, a switch in play from left to right left the goal unprotected and Jenna McCormick made no mistake with her long range strike. Precision play from Palace midfielders caused ball chasing from Wanderers and Palace were able to take a 3-0 lead into the break. Positional changes from Wanderers strengthened its lineup and forced some smart work from defenders including Tess Connor, who worked hard to ensure her opponent did not score. Wanderers was able to score a second half goal due to midfield pressure and a fine finish from Julia D’Onghia.

United 4 d Villa 1
After a tough start to season 2010, United was looking to get some points on the board when it met Villa, surging forward from kick off. Fine defensive work from Rebecca Smith and Sam Freeman kept United at bay for some time but a left foot strike from just inside the 18 opened the account for the reds. Villa sought to rebuild and their young side played maturely, looking to push long balls wide and cross them in however United’s defence was resolute. As the Villa side tired, United made full use of fresh legs on the bench. United’s Zoe Groom dominated her midfield position with tenacious tackling and pin point passes and Palma Edmonds enjoyed her game, demonstrating her leg speed and long range strike of the ball, setting up shots and scoring two of her own. A never say die attitude stayed with Villa who took advantage of a loose ball in the closing stanza of the match to get on the scorecard.

Portland 2 d Millicent 0
Portland continued their home ground dominance, scoring two goals in the first half. Rachael Bennett stepped into the sweeper position very successfully for Portland, reading the play well and distributing to the midfield. New signing Kristy De Rose proved to be asset for Portland and will be a valuable player as the season progresses. Millicent settled into a defensive line up, commanded by Maria Montuori and Wanita Robinson, blocking any further forays to goal from Portland. A quick break saw Millicent surge forward however this was quickly dispatched without result.
Goal scorers: Portland - K Jensen, L Santucci

Juniors
City 9 d Millicent 0
City were keen to take control of the match early and did not waste time, scoring 8 before half time. City was able to work the ball forward and the novice Millicent side had no answer for the experienced City strikers. Comfortable with taking the points, City were content during the second half to pass the ball around and work into goal scoring opportunities without undue pressure. Erin Ireland and Brianna Roberts provided good distribution for City, however Bethany Bennett and Kathleen Woods ran the game out well for Millicent only allowing the addition of a solitary goal in the second half.

Villa 10 v County 0
Positional awareness proved the decider in this match, with Villa players showing excellent movement off the ball. Villa’s Natalie Koczak is proving to be a reliable player with great vision and composure on the ball and Grace Hopton showed assurance in her game play, demonstrating confidence in her team mates. The County defence was stretched during this match with stand in goalkeeper Katie Slattery showing great commitment despite the growing scoreline and saving the addition of many more. Alice Roughana showed great resolve and refused to yield to Villa’s strength, never giving up the fight until the final whistle.
Goal scorers: Villa – M Ianella 4, N Koczak 4, J Wood 2, J Donaldson, M Wilmot, OG

Wanderers 5 d Palace 0
Hard work was the order of the day for these sides, both playing undermanned. Despite tight marking from Palace players, two goals were scored in the first half from the top on the table Wanderers. Tiri-Jae Green and Courtney Lavia played strong games for the light blues and were able to find the feet of their goal-scoring teammates. Pocket rocket Dana Jones is improving each week, showing a huge work ethic for Palace which will hold her in good stead. With pressure increased after the break, Palace’s Alesha Hales lifted her game, working with team mates well and holding her position well.
Goal scorers: Wanderers – M Sims 2, J White 2, K Lehmann

With increasing numbers, the Junior Development Squad continues to thrive. Passing continues to improve with the girls practising skills introduced at trainings. Sisters Lauren and Chelsea Frost always prove to be a handful on the park, both displaying persistence at the ball and looking for a team mate to pass to.

This week’s fixtures see United play Portland at 1.30pm, City face Wanderers and Villa play County at 3pm. County play Wanderers and Villa meet City in tough junior fixtures at noon at Blue Lake Sports Park. Palace take the trip to Millicent for both junior and senior matches.
