MATCH REPORTS

In Round 1 of the Dycer Constructions Premiership, the Sharks travel to Portland to take on the Panthers.

Sharks enter this game very confident after last weeks effort which saw them defeat the Panthers 4-1.

However, playing Portland home is always going to be tougher.

Earlier in the day, the Sharks Senior B Grade team had a win 3-1, so the vibe amoungst the Sharks crowd was buzzing, eager to get the first 3 points of the season.

Missing from the Sharks line-up was Lance Da Rocha, Damien Stemberger, Terry Stevenson, which gave youngster Brayden Nunan (16yr old) a Senior start for the Sharks.

The referee of the day was Nathan Butler.

The Sharks started the game at a quick pace and it wasn’t long into the game when Nzeakor from the Sharks scores the first goal of the game, when running onto a loose ball inside the 6 yr box.(9min)

There were many attacks at goal, but like last week the Sharks could not manage to convert.

Sharks midfield of Kennett, Gordon, Wood , Bruttomesso were putting pressure on the Panthers defence by creating many scoring opportunities.

At the (12min) mark, referee Nathan Butler awarded the Sharks a penalty for a handball by a panthers defender inside the box.

Sharks Keeper Fuller was nominated to take the kick, and made no mistake to convert the penalty.

Panthers struck back at the (33min) mark when a cross found the head of the Portland Striker (Chapman), who headed over the Sharks keeper Fuller to score the Panthers first.

The next goal was earned by Weistra who cleverly chipped the ball past the keeper in a 1v1 situation. Score 3-1.

At half time, Sharks Coach Bruttomesso encouraged his players, to stick to the game plan, and ‘knock the ball around ’ and goals will come.

Player of the day Matthew Weistra had many runs down the wing, crossing the ball in front of the face of goal, but many times the Sharks forwards could not find the back of the net.

There was a mixture of long shots from Kennett, overhead scissor kicks from Gordon, multiple chances from Wood, but the cross bar became an added defence for the Portland Panthers.

The fourth goal (66min) came from Kennett, who crossed the ball into the box, the ball defelected off a Panthers defender past the keeper for an own goal Score 4-1.

The game started to slow down, which gave the Sharks a bit more time on the ball.

The combination of Sharks newest recruits of Nzeakor & Adesanmi together with Widdison, Kennett, Gordon, Weistra were too good for the Panthers, and displayed some very good passages of play which kept the crowd entertained.

The Sharks coach Bruttomesso made 2 changes, with his cousin Sebastiano Bruttomesso coming off for Stuart Sherrard, and youngster Brayden Nunan coming off for Burmese player Eh Mwee.

A defensive error from the Panthers caused an own goal, and the final score of the day was 5-1.

Credit to the Portland Panthers, who defended very well, when again the scoreline could have blown out in to double figures.

Next week the Sharks take on ‘early’ Premiership favourites Apollo at Shark Park.
