Q and A with John Aloisi
Star striker John Aloisi discusses Melbourne Heart FC’s upcoming match against Perth Glory, the recent break and his final season as a player.
How has the team pulled up after the weekend break?
Everyone is refreshed. Mentally, it was good for us to get a way for a few days, and also physically to recharge the batteries. The boys have trained hard these last three days, and we will be firing for the end of the season. The last six games are going to be really important.
Have the recent results provided a boost for the side heading into the final stages of the season?
We needed those three wins. The game against Adelaide really changed it for us, winning right at the end gave us that boost to win the next two games. We now need to go on with it as winning those three games doesn’t mean anything if we can’t. We want to go over to Perth, get a result and hopefully go on from there.
How have you found your final season as a player so far?
I’m just really trying to enjoy it, win the games I play and do my best for the team. But I really want to make the finals and these six last games are going to be really important for the Club.
Have you started to look beyond the end of the season as you commence your transition to coaching?
I’m trying to focus on the playing side of things, but as we have got trials coming up for the youth team, and also discussing with people around the Club our plans for the youth team next season, you start thinking about it a little bit, but my main focus is playing.
Heading across to Perth is a long road trip. How do you think the team will fare?
It’s always a tough trip. Perth is not an easy place to go, and as we have seen over the last few games, they are playing really well and have started to hit form. It’s going to be tough for us but we have to just try and play the way we know how. We’ve had some good results away from home, so we need to be confident we can get a good result there.
Is the team treating every game like a final?
It’s been like a final for the last three games that we’ve played. We knew if we didn’t win in Adelaide we would struggle to make the finals, and it’s the same now. I know it’s a massive cliché, but it really is at the moment for us.
