County 2 v 2 Portland
Villa 0 v 13 City
Wanderers 0 v 5 Palace
Millicent 1 v 5 United
THE BLACK AND WHITE TIE
The opening match of Season 2009 provided to be a tight tussle between the two black and white teams of Portland and County. Portland opened the scoring with a powerful Katelyn Kilgour strike early in the match. County were stung into action and with keeper Megan McMillan directing traffic from the back, produced 2 goals of their own to edge in front before the half time break. The visitors dug deep and were thrilled to produce a leveller. Each team worked hard to deliver the winner but ran out of time with the final result a 2-2 draw.
Final result: County 2 (C Dow, N Algie) drew with Portland 2 (K Kilgour, E Santucci)
City triumphed over a resolute but depleted Villa, scoring 6 times before the break. Juniors helped to fill the Villa side but to no avail against a determined City, displaying their strong style of play. Villa defender Jenna Nunan worked tenaciously in the backline but was no match for the oncoming surge of orange attackers. With multiple goalscorers including 4 from Jen Smith, City have shown that they have no passengers in their side and their long range shots will trouble most goalkeepers.
Final result: Villa 0 defeated by City 13 (J Smith 4, K Maczkowiack 3, K Gilbert 2, T Kourmouzis, E Elliot-Jones, L Pegler & T Grant)
What was billed to be the tight blockbuster of the round proved to be one way traffic for Palace. Two weeks ago these teams met in a game only decided by penalties. With their defence strengthened by the return of Chelsea Dickins and Gabby Tentye, Palace continually attacked the Wanderers goal, hitting the woodwork several times in the first half and scoring three goals. A deflated Wanderers took to the park again and showed great persistence under captain Leonie McCallum but despite the occasional push forward were unable to capitalise on any goalscoring opportunities.
Final result: Wanderers 0 defeated by Palace 5 (T Andrews 2, K Pedlar, J Hill, J McCormick)
In the first away match of the season, United travelled to Plunkett Terrace to take on the youthful Millicent. During the first 20 minutes, United continually pushed forward but were unable to convert due to strong defensive work in front of goal by Maria Montuori. On a quick break, Millicent caught United defenders flat footed and slotted a low ball past the keeper to take the lead. United increased their intensity in their attacking half and levelled the score just before half time. Buoyed by their endeavour, United finished the game with an experienced back line thwarting any attack, newcomer Tanya Frost controlling the midfield and scoring four more times to seal the match.
Final result: Millicent 1 (J Grgetic) defeated by United 5 (J Martin-Brown 3, K Panagopoulos 2).
