A GRADE
BLUE LAKE 2 V GAMBIER CITY SHARKS 3
In excellent conditions the match started with both sides trying to take control of the game. There was a controversial goal after only four minutes when Guess (who looked off side) ran onto a nice pass to push the ball past the approaching keeper. This seemed to rattle the Sharks and the Blues could have gone two or three up minutes later when Guess again broke through and missed a one on one chance after a defensive error. It wasn’t long before he made amends with a beautiful one two with Ferguson which resulted in Ferguson tapping in for a two nil lead. The Sharks lifted a little after that and when a long free kick was taken Marlow hit a good shot which Armandi could only deflect into the net. The game was firing up and a crude challenge on John Stemberger earned Strachan a yellow card. The Blues were well in control of the midfield, however the Sharks occasionally looked dangerous on the rebound. Blue Lake could have sealed the game before half time with numerous chances missing the target. Just before half time Damon Stemberger received a red card leaving the Sharks with ten men for the rest of the game.
The Blues took advantage of an extra man at the start of the second half and were dominating all over the ground, but for all of their midfield and offensive pressure they still could not find the back of the net. Thomson, Guess, Ferguson and co were constantly creating and making chances. To their credit the Sharks defence and in particular the goalkeeper were working overtime to keep the Blues at bay. Twenty minutes into the second half the Sharks lifted their work rate and against all odds were starting to work their way back into the game, and were back in it when given a penalty which Lennon converted to draw the game level at two all. The Blues were fired back into action and the skill of Ferguson caused a crude tackle to earn them a penalty. Unfortunately Ferguson was unable to beat the keeper who made a terrific save diving to his right to parry out for a corner. Just when it seemed the game was going to finish a draw the Sharks were awarded a free kick about 22 metres out. Lennon scored his second and the winning goal with a sensational strike into the top right hand corner to land the Sharks their first win of the year and to cause Blue Lake to look back at what could have been.
