United travelled to Malseed Park full of confidence after a good start to the season and were up against the Blues who only had the one win. The home side were dealt a blow when 3 players were ruled out in the morning of the game due to illness and injury. Both sides started the game with speed and style trying to get the upper hand in the midfield; however it was the Blues who looked more dangerous in attack with the speed of Guess and Thomson. After about 10 mins it was a nice run by Guess and a lovely square ball which set up Thomson with an easy tap in. Blue Lake continued to press and the Millicent defence led by the reliable Dibley were working overtime. The Blues went two up 10 minutes later when Chatindiara scored with a sizzling long range shot. Millicent lifted their work rate after this and some good midfield play by Gregetic and Saint they started making the Blues defence work harder, but Strachan, Hanssen and co kept them at bay. Thirty minutes into the game and young Justin McRostie showed great skill and poise when he picked up a loose ball and danced around a couple of defenders before slamming a left foot shot into the back of the net. Millicent were determined not to let the game slip away and were rewarded when a ball only partially cleared was delicately chipped over Armandis head from Lines. Half time score 3-1
The second half started with a battle of the midfields with Blue Lake slightly ahead. The creative work of Ferguson and McRostie was causing headaches for the Millicent defence. This paid off when a loose ball was picked up by Troy Loosz and he calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net to extend the lead to 4-1. Millicent, as they have all year fought on and were getting more into the game but couldn’t crack the Blues defence. The game slowed somewhat during the half but Millicent got rewarded late in the game when the Blues failed to clear a cross and Lines snatched his second goal. Unfortunately for Millicent it was all too late and the Blues took the points and sung their song with gusto in their new clubrooms.
