The Round Ball Community Development program will be highlighted this week in the season premier of Series Two of the reality based television show Football Superstar and despite the success of the initiative, it is pride in the junior superstars that drives Scott Dickson, Director of Football Operations. "I am delighted for the three boys and satisfied with the outcomes so far," he states with a smile.
Cameron Hart, Thomas Renzi and Callum Ferguson were selected to represent the region after going through trials arranged by The Round Ball in Mount Gambier in March with the support of Fox 8 and the series production company North One TV. The trials saw the three winners receive financial and morale support to participate in the Football Superstar Roadshow held in Adelaide and Dickson is keen to acknowledge those who made it all possible. "We would like to publicly thank Stephen Smith from Steplen Constructions and Tony Gasparini for without their support this initiative would never have got off the ground." The three boys were taken to Adelaide and provided the opportunity to participate thanks to Dickson who is quick to pass the accolades on to the boys. "They are the superstars, all we did was provide the inspiration for the them, if they weren’t any good they would not have got past the Adelaide Roadshow."
Hart, Renzi and Ferguson rose to national attention when they took the Adelaide Roadshow by storm and were selected to represent South Australia at the top 50 weekend in Melbourne. "To take three boys to Adelaide to compete in the Roadshow was a privilege and we hoped that one may be given the opportunity to attend the top 50 weekend in Melbourne. When the day unfolded and not one, not two, but all three boys were selected to represent South Australia we were astounded."
Dickson then took the role of mentor as he prepared the three boys for the challenge of the top 50 weekend.
"The boys worked very hard prior to weekend in Melbourne and we are all very proud of their efforts. All three boys played exceptionally well during the trial matches and in my opinion all three could have made the final 15."
The results of the final 15 weekend have been kept a closely guarded secret, however we are aware that one boy has been selected to star in the show and travel to Melbourne as part of the final 15.
"I don’t want to comment on the outcome of the show as it is not all about where the boys finished or who got the furthest. This is a positive moment for soccer in the region as this experiment has shown just how capable these players and the coaches who have worked with them are. It is too simplistic to look at where they finish, we are keen to look at where they have come from and identify pathways and commonalities in their journey."
All will be made clear on Wednesday night when all three boys take centre stage, the prize is a spot in the Final 15 and the opportunity to move into the Football Superstar mansion. With the final prize of an
A-League contract with Melbourne Victory up for grabs and a $10,000 scholarship at Monash University the stakes are certainly high.
"This competition has the potential to be life changing in so many ways. I don’t think one of our boys will win it this year, however their story may inspire others to work hard and listen to their coaches and teachers. It may take these three boys on another journey or it may end up disappointing someone. In the end when there is a mountain to climb it is a long way down, what we should remind these boys and everyone involved is that at least they got to see the mountain."
Football Superstar will commence this Wednesday at 7.30pm and will be shown with exclusive content at The Commercial Hotel in Mount Gambier.
