Tom Weedon scored for Apollo in the under 14 semi final this week.
The WBSA Dycer Constructions Top 4 matches were played on soft pitches at Casadio Park and Malseed Park on Sunday 30 August 2009.
In A Grade, International and Apollo will continue their season rivalry and meet in the Top 4 Final, on Sunday 13 September 2009, after both teams were convincing winners in their respective semi finals.
Inter have kept their hopes of claiming all three titles this year with a two nil win over Blue Lake in the semi final of the Dycer Constructions top four competition played on Sunday.
Inter started with the wind but were minus Robbie Manfrin, Christian Cella and Adam Osman. Blue Lake were at full strength and saw this as a perfect opportunity to beat Inter. Blue Lake had Inter on the back foot early and the pace of Mitchell Thomson and Tristan Guess were worrying the backline. Callum Ferguson put a good ball through to Thomson who passed on to Guess but Brett Reid in the Inter goal was out very quickly to clean up. As anticipated the midfield battle was intense and with both sides playing an attacking style it was a joy to watch. Dave Galloway was playing his usual controlling style for Inter but the pressure exerted was making it hard for both sides to take control. Ferguson was almost through when a nice pass from Guess was cleared by the reliable Chris Williams. The ball was moving from end to end and it wasn’t long before Inter looked like scoring when Marcus Morony broke through but Andy Armandi was alert to the danger kept the game goalless with a brave dive at Morony’s feet. Inter had a couple of chances in quick succession but again Armandi came to the rescue with good diving saves. Blue Lake looked like taking the lead when a good shot from Ferguson was parried by Reid to Justin McRostie but it came too quick to him and it deflected inches wide of the post. Guess was next with a half chance but after a good build up his shot went wide. It was Inters turn to nearly break through when firstly a shot after a brilliant dummy by Galloway was well blocked by Blair Branstone and then a long cross found Dante Bonner in the clear but he uncharacteristically shot wide. The deadlock was finally broken when a long ball by Andrew Ielasi caught the wind and looped over Armandi.
Blue Lake started the second half more positively and was threatening to equalise and almost did when Ferguson hit a shot on the turn which was well saved by Reid. Inter almost doubled their lead when Joel Redfern got on to the end of a good cross only to see the ball loop over the cross bar. The turning point was when Morony received a yellow card for an altercation with Bryce Strachan and then after an abusive outburst was red carded leaving Inter to fight out the game with ten men. Blue Lake were getting more of the ball now but were still unable to use the extra man to get the much needed goal. They came close when a shot from Walter Chatindiara was tipped over by Reid. Inter were still creating attacking moves and were unlucky not to go two ahead when a shot by Adam Craig hit the bar and the fortunately hit Armandi on the chest from the rebound. Inter were lucky not to get a second red card when a long ball to Thomson on the wing caused Reid to come running out of his box and clean him up but he only received a yellow card. Inter put the match beyond doubt when a powerful low free kick by Galloway couldn’t be held by Armandi and Redfern was the first to react and tapped the ball in to give them a two nil lead and ultimately the game.
