The Round Ball mixes it up

Junior team captains Michael Gorey and Monique Ianella

The success of women’s football and an idea suggested on local radio was the inspiration behind Sundays Mash-Up Cup mixed soccer tournament.
CEO of Mount Gambier based community soccer program The Round Ball, Scott Dickson credits local radio personality Gordon Milosevic as the inspiration for the concept. “Milo has spoken about the future of soccer many times on the Saturday Morning Sports Show on 5SE. He has suggested mixed soccer as a natural progression of the social game and we were keen to give it a go”, Dickson who is the only soccer coach to coached back to back premierships in both local WBSA and SEWFA competitions has been heavily involved in junior development programs for both boys and girls and is keen to put Milosevic’s idea to the test. “For many years female players have played in local soccer matches and the Round Ball and many others have mixed girls and boys to create good outcomes and to extend individual players. This is different though, this is a competitive fixture against a talented opposition who places a high degree of importance on co-educational football.”
The Round Ball will be competing against the Warrnambool Wolves who are no strangers to the region. “The Wolves have a very strong junior development program and in recent years have had successes at the South West Games and other tournaments in regional Victoria. The under 16 girls Captain was a product of the Wolves junior development program and she is currently playing for Melbourne Victory in the W-League. That in itself is an indication of the quality of their coaching and development programs.”
The Round Ball will field two sides this weekend a junior side comprising under 14 boys and under 16 girls and a senior side comprising under 16 boys and under 21 girls. “The concept is pretty simple” explained Dickson, “Each side will have 16 players in each squad, 8 boys and 8 girls and 5 girls will play on the pitch at all times, the focus is on development and fun, letting the kids mix and play the game” added Dickson.
Local SEWFA stars Tess Andrews and Monique Ianella have been named female captains while Mark Judd and Michael Gorey will captain the boys.
The junior game will kick off at 2.00pm and the senior game 3.30pm at Grant High School and will travel to Warrnambool for the away leg next weekend.
