EVERTON DOWN UNDER

Tickets for Everton FC's home game against Melbourne Heart FC at Etihad Stadium will go on sale on Tuesday May 25.

Best known in Australia as the club of Qantas Socceroos favourite, Tim Cahill, Everton has been at the forefront of English football since the club was formed in 1878.

Promoter, Sam Righi, of Big Deal Touring and Trinity Sports and Event Management has confirmed that Everton will play a match against Melbourne Heart FC on 14 July.

“I’m a general sports fan like most Australians and I see this as a fantastic opportunity for the Hyundai A-League to show its worth against one of the best known and most loved teams in the English Premier League,” Righi said.

Led by Everton’s manager of the past eight years, David Moyes, the visiting squad will include players who are not otherwise occupied with the FIFA World Cup including captain Phil Neville, Mikel Arteta, Louis Saha, Sylvain Distin and Jack Rodwell.

Cahill, who will potentially still be involved with Australia’s third World Cup campaign when the tour starts, has confirmed he will play in Sydney and Melbourne once he is available.

Cahill is widely anticipated to sign a new four year deal with Everton prior to the World Cup.

He said he is looking forward to seeing his club meet up with the army of Evertonians in his home land.

“I think it’s fantastic for the Hyundai A-League and also Everton because Australia’s got a massive following of Everton supporters,” Cahill said.

“I get together and have a lot of signing sessions with the Everton supporters and they come from all corners of Australia. They’re a proud following and I think for a Premier League team like Everton to visit Australia is absolutely massive."

Everton has made a habit of international pre-season tours since Moyes took charge of the ‘Toffees’,with the USA, Canada, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Scotland and Thailand on the itinerary in recent years.

Moyes said the 2010-11 pre-season starts with the trip to Australia.

“We’re looking forward to seeing all the Evertonians in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane as well as other football and sports fans,” he said.

“The facilities in Australia are first-class which is important to us because the training and the games will be a good part of our pre-season preparations.

“Thanks to Tim Cahill, the Aussies know all about Everton and I am sure we’ll get a typically warm Australian welcome – even though it’s winter down under!”

Everton are due to arrive in Australia in early July for a two week tour.
