SEWFA Results Round 3

JUNIORS MAKE THEIR MARK

Quality football was played at Blue Lake Sports Park on the weekend. Without the huge scorelines of the week prior, hard fought contests were the order of the day.

County were determined to reduce the scoreline of last week’s match and should be pleased with their efforts against Palace. Hard working Katrina Hockey and Tania Widdison combined well in the back line for County giving Palace little time on the ball, thwarting their free flowing style of play. Palace had to work a little harder to find the net this week and upped the tempo. With Terasa Nearmy breaking the deadlock, more goals soon followed giving them a 3 goal buffer at the half time break. Palace’s starting line up included several under 14 players and in her first year in senior football, Laurena Byers played an honest, no nonsense game impressing coaching staff and supporters.

Final score: Palace 5 (J McCormick 2, T Nearmy, C Addicott, J Hill) d County 0

With several City players unavailable this week, United had the chance to steal some points from the top team. United spent the majority of the first half in attack with Jess Martin-Brown and Julia Reader consistently winning the ball in the midfield and distributing it to forwards. Despite many attempts on goal, United could not slide one past the keeper. However, once the ball made it to the City half, they made no mistakes and two quick surges from forwards saw them take a 2 goal lead into the break. Lifted by this, City pushed forward again but were denied their trademark long range shots by defenders. Deflections saw them score a third, with the final goal scored directly from a tremendous corner kick. Fiona Badenoch has returned to the game and showed the gritty determination that made her a crowd favourite. With several junior players also included in City’s line up, including Emily Birch who was instrumental in their third goal, the absence of key players was not a huge factor for them.

Final Score: City 4 (J Smith 2, K Maczkowiack 2) d United 0

Millicent travelled to Portland in what proved to be the tightest tussle of the senior matches. Portland entered the match just ahead of Millicent on the table and were determined to extend the lead. Portland’s regular keeper Jade Cockerill took to the pitch this week and was rewarded with the first goal of the match. Young Millicent players including Kristy Walker continually worked hard to get the ball forward and Millicent equalised before the break. With goal keeping find Liz Bradley donning the gloves for Millicent in the second half, Portland had to increase their intensity to break through and midfielder Bohdeen Geritsen did just that, winning the ball and distributing effectively. A second half goal followed by a late penalty kick sealed the match in Portland’s favour.

Final Score: Portland 3 (J Cockerill, K Kilgour, D Kilgour) d Millicent 1 (N Lambert)

The unfortunate unavailability of senior players saw Villa forfeit to Wanderers.
