SENIORS

County 1 d Millicent 0
Buoyed from its victory last week and intent on improving the draw during the first round, County welcomed back several key players and looked to make its mark on the game early. In spite of this, Millicent were able to contain the runs forward of Tania Widdison and Jess Feast, with Wanita Robinson dropping into the back line. An own goal from Millicent gave County the edge they had been seeking and they took this advantage into the break. County used its height advantage in an effort to increase the lead, however Millicent’s defence marshalled by Maria Montuori stayed firm. At the final whistle, County were overjoyed to take the win and subsequently fourth spot on the ladder.
Goal scorers: County - OG

City 11 d Villa 0
The City juggernaut continued its winning form on Saturday against Villa. Despite enormous efforts from the maroons, they were soon overwhelmed by City’s attack on goal. Melanie Wilmot played very well defensively for Villa, a fact belied by the growing scoreline. Jen Smith and Tania Grant controlled the midfield, building play around them and bringing others into the game. Aimee Beck was heroic in her efforts for Villa, however a 6 goal lead at the break proved impossible for Villa to overcome. Weariness played a factor for Villa during the second half, and City capitalised making full use of its bench to claim 5 more after the break.
Goal scorers: City - L Birch 3, J Smith 2, K Maczkowiack 2, M Thompson, K Henriksen 1, T Kourmouzis, T Grant

Wanderers 8 d United 1
From the first whistle, the teenage team of Wanderers pressed forward putting immediate pressure on United’s defence. With usual central defenders absent, Tanya Frost and Kylie Durbidge stepped in to fill the roles admirably. Wanderers were able to get three past United in the first half including a curving corner from captain Leonie McCallum. McCallum’s uncanny ability to read the play and position herself well frustrated the United faithful and tore apart their midfield. Eme Ripper defended with strength for Wanderers and thwarted many attacks on goal, however United were able to snag a consolation goal in the final minutes of the match.
Goal scorers: Wanderers - K Jenz-Walker 6, K Saffin, L McCallum United - K Seiler

Palace 4 d Portland 1
With several senior players unavailable, Palace headed to Portland very wary of a repeat from last year’s road trip, where it scraped by with a draw. Juniors helped to fill the void but the side was still undermanned when it hit the park. Palace defender Tori Koop’s game lifted and she played exceptionally well under pressure. A solitary goal took Palace into the break and when Portland scored early in the second half, it looked to be déjà vu for the visitors. However, Palace sparked again and although Jade Cockerill in goals for Portland played well, there was little she could do to stem the Palace tide. Donna Kilgour made a welcome return to her home side which strengthened the back line but could not contain Gabby Tentye who is regularly finding the back of the net this year.
Goal scorers: Palace - J McCormick 2, G Tentye 2 Portland - K Kilgour

UNDER 14S
County 3 d Millicent 2
Millicent was forced to forfeit to County in the first game of the season and both sides entered this match with the view of success. The more experienced County looked strong on the ball and pushed forward during the first half exploiting the space in front of them, as some of the younger Millicent players played County on side. Millicent sweeper Kathleen Woods was imposing, clearing the ball from attack on several occasions. In a position shift from last year, Taylah Cella appeared to be enjoying her attacking role for County and finished well. Fresh from SAPSASA duties, April Hockey looked calm in defence, winning the ball cleanly under pressure and passing to team mates. With a 3-0 County lead at half time, it was an excited side that took to the pitch for the second half however Millicent again showed its “never say die” attitude and were able to peg back 2 of their own courtesy of Adele Cooper. County were able to hang on to their lead and were thrilled to record a victory.
Goal scorers: County - T Cella, J Boyd, E Schultz Millicent - A Cooper 2

Palace 1 d City 0
City claimed a convincing win during the first round of the season however that did not daunt a determined Palace side. City looked to have the early momentum of the game with running attacks at the Palace goal. Usual goal keeper Olivia Pratt made her presence felt in the Palace midfield, looking equally at home on the park as she does in goals. A change during the first half saw Ashlae Pilven drop back to defence, strengthening the back line with her ability read the play and strongly clear dangerous balls. Emily Birch played with composure in City’s defence forcing the ball wide and dispatching the ball down the line. Sheridan Lock ran hard for City in attack but could not convert. During the second half, a high ball bounced in front of the City keeper and there was little she could do to prevent the looping ball bounce over her head into the net.
Goal scorers: Palace - S McCarthy

Wanderers 6 d Villa 0
Wanderers cemented their spot at the top of the ladder with a convincing win over second placed Villa. With four goals scored in the first half, including a well placed strike from the newly signed Monique Iannella, Villa were on the back foot. Grace Hopton lifted considerably in possibly her last game for Villa for the season due to travel and did as much as she could to cut off attacks on goal. Both senior and junior Wanderers teams have an uncanny understanding of each other, and played good passing football, with Jasmine White set up well to finish neatly on her favoured left. As Villa wore down, Angela Bennett continued in defence and managed to contain Wanderers to just two more goals in the second half.
Goal scorers: Wanderers - M Iannella 3, M Sims 2, J White 1

An impressive turnout of 17 Junior Development Players made for a jam-packed pitch, with the inclusion of positional playing in the second half necessary to improve congested play. With this modification, the girls found space and were able to play a passing game. Each week, the girls demonstrate increased skills with several headed balls and players using their bodies well to receive the ball. Monique Trapolino showed again her fine defensive skills under pressure, while several others including Rebekah Morgan and Karissa Coulson made no mistake in front of goal.

This Saturday will see City meet Portland at 1.30pm, followed by County/Wanderers and United/Palace fixtures at 3pm. In junior matches County meet Palace and City face Wanderers at noon. Millicent remain at home and host Villa in both junior and senior games.

THE NEW KIT

10 million by Saturday?‏

Dear Scott,

Unprecedented momentum has been building towards this moment – with over nine million people already supporting the 1GOAL call across the globe, through a range of exciting activities. Can we reach 10 million before the halfway stage of the tournament?

It couldn’t come at a better time: now the South African President has invited world leaders to a summit at the end of the World Cup to discuss the plan to get every child into school. This is the perfect opportunity, as the campaign for the World Cup ends, to focus on the campaign for universal education.

Now you have the chance to help this campaign reach an amazing 10 million supporters, at this crucial moment, by issuing your own Yellow Card calling on world leaders to guarantee schooling for every child:

www.join1goal.org/r/yellowcard

World leaders need to agree on a plan to provide education, and to do that they’ll need to hear from all of us united in our demand to make education the lasting legacy of this World Cup. That’s where you come in.

If countries’ governments don’t believe there is a global demand for action on education, they won’t agree to fix the problem. Issue your own Yellow Card calling on world leaders to guarantee education for every child, and we’ll deliver it directly to them:

www.join1goal.org/r/yellowcard

Our nine million supporters are drawn from cities, towns, and villages in over 120 countries, and have shown their support in an incredible range of ways. Teachers, students, local education activists, football fans and celebrities have all rallied, and whether they’re doing it using email, mobile phone, social networks or attending the World’s Biggest Lesson, we are becoming a global voice too large for world leaders to ignore.

In villages throughout Bangladesh, thousands of children have taken part in football matches in support of 1GOAL, joining 194,097 fellow Bangladeshis who have sent SMS messages to join the call for education for all.

In Senegal, the Senegalese President invited hundreds of 1GOAL supporters to the Presidential Palace where he made a public commitment to the 1GOAL campaign and its aim of making sure every child receives an education.

While in the United States, 1GOAL received national attention when the Good Morning America TV program visited a South African school in Soweto with the 1GOAL team.

You can be part of this global movement building momentum towards a world where every child is guaranteed an education, by sending your own Yellow Card to world leaders before the World Cup Final:

www.join1goal.org/r/yellowcard

This opportunity is too good to miss – global attention will be on Africa, and world leaders will be pressed on the issue of education. Help us reach 10 million supporters by filling out your Yellow Card today.

Thanks for making a difference,
The 1GOAL team.

SHARK ATTACK Round 6 - Centrals v Sharks‏

In Round 6 of the Dycer Constructions Premiership, the Sharks outplayed the Lions to record a good win and move into outright third position on the Premiership table.

With a week off for the Junior State Championships, the Sharks were ready to take on Lions at the ‘Den’.

With the departure of Anthony Adesanmi, back to the UK, Sharks welcome back John Stemeberger to the line-up, who has had a year off. But with the World Cup fever amoungst us, John wanted to get back to playing the sport that he loves best.

It was only (9m) into the game when John Stemeberger had an immediate impact by scoring the goal of the game to give the Sharks the lead.

The goal started from huge kick from keeper Norton Fuller, who kicked the ball from the top of 18’yard box, and the ball bounced deep into the Lions defense zone.

As the ball remained high the air , Centrals keeper Brodie Koop could not stop Stemberger who at full pace outjumped Koop, and managed to head the ball into the open goal.

Sharks dominated the first half, starting from the defence through to the forwards.

The Sharks midfield of Kennett, Gordon , Tobin and Weistra were combing well, giving many chances for Striker John Stemberger to score.

The second goal (37m) came from Weistra who was running dangerously at goal, and this time slotted the ball perfectly to give Sharks a 2-0 lead before half time.

The Lions threatened the Sharks defence, but Widdison, Stemberger, Nunan, Wood were outstanding all game.

Sharks Nzeakor had the tough job on Bruce Morale, a real threat to any team, however Nzeakor had the upperhand, not allowing Morale any room causing Morale to shoot from distance, and not being effective for the Lions.

Fuller was in fine form, making some good saves and giving the crowd some exciting display of keeping at its best.

Half time Score 2-0

The Lions hit back at the (55min) mark, when some confusion amoungst the Sharks defence allowed Primer to sneak one back. Score 2-1

The Lions team now started to lift, and a lot more pressure was put on the Sharks defence, however Damian Stemeberger who was playing sweeper, literally swept anything that got through the Sharks defence.

Wood who was playing in a defence midfield role stood firm, and was able to win the ball, and start the attack for the Sharks.

The next goal came (65min), from Weistra again, who calmly slotted an open ball , tightly in the corner of the goal. Score 3-1.

Then John Stemberger finished the game with his second, final score 4-1.

Sharks take on Millicent at Shark Park next week, a win would secure third spot on the table at the half way mark of the season.

Goal Scorers: M.Weistra 2, J.Stemberger 2

County 2 d United 0
The local derby of SEWFA kicked off the senior fixtures on Saturday, with County ultimately claiming the points for the first time since 2007. Two very determined sides took to the park with County claiming an early goal from a floating ball into the danger area from Paige Ransom. Although County used pace in its attacking third, United defenders Karen Panagopoulos and Julia Reader were able to read the ball well and deflect any attacks on goal. Megan McMillan in goals for County was rock solid in her position, coming off her line to claim any balls pushed just a little too far in front of attackers. Despite camping comfortably in the County half, United failed to capitalise on many goal scoring opportunities throughout the game. Ransom claimed another in the second half from a free kick just outside the 18 yard box to seal the match.
Goal scorer: County – P Ransom 2

Wanderers 3 d Portland 0
Wanderers hit the park full of confidence, with a side comprising several members of the successful WBSA Under 16 team from the previous week. With three goals scored before the break, including a fine header from Kim Jensz-Walker, Wanderers were looked to outplay the Victorians. However, Portland’s backline settled and made for heavy traffic for Wanderers to break through. Newcomer to the game Jess Looker showed a good understanding of the game, tackling hard and passing some excellent balls along the line for Portland to attack. Alannah Daniel showed good balance on the ball, attacking herself or passing for team mates when required but could not help Portland get onto the scorecard, with Kendall Saffin reading the play well and sending the ball back to Wanderer’s attacking half. With no addition to the score after half time, Wanderers were content to claim the points in a hard fought battle.
Goal scorers: Wanderers – K Moy, K Jensz-Walker, P Ackland

Palace 12 d Villa 0
Palace took control of the match from the start, playing with confidence and poise. Despite the growing scoreline, Villa worked hard with Beth Harris showing some exceptional defensive work to win the ball under pressure and distribute to feet. Sharnee Lock also showed great improvement on Saturday, tackling when necessary but content to play a holding defensive role, forcing Palace to rework its attack on goal. With four scored in the first half, the scoreline crept higher as the second half wore on with 7 goal scorers in total including a headed goal from Bec Hillyer and a last minute finish from Shaye Stuckey who has returned to Palace after a break of several years.
Goal scorers: Palace – J McCormick 4, T Andrews 2, G Tentye 2, E Thompson, B Hillyer, C Dickins, S Stuckey

City 6 d Millicent 1
In a repeat of the half way fixture of last year, City seniors travelled to Millicent. City were keen to get off the mark early this match, after failing to score in its previous two matches and wasted no time in slotting three home in the first half. City displayed quality football, content to pass the ball around to create opportunities in attack, forcing Millicent into a chasing game. During the second half, Tania Grant continued to be the play maker of the team for City, with superb passing to forwards who made no mistake in front of goal with Jen Smith back on the scoreboard with a hat trick. However, Nikki Lambert claimed the distinction of being the first player to slot one past the City keeper for the year to give Millicent a goal of its own. An injury to Millicent keeper Hannah Kent forced a change towards the end of the match, but City travelled home happily with its 3 points.
Goal scorers: City – J Smith 3, K Hendriksen 2, K Maczkowiack 1. Millicent – N Lambert

Under 14s
Wanderers 4 d Palace 0
Despite playing short for many games this season, Wanderers have played imposing football dominating the Under 14 competition. Wanderers were able to take to the park on Saturday with a full complement of players and continued its winning form. Tahlia Sparrow showed great promise on Saturday, impressing spectators on the sidelines with her ability to read the ball well despite only recently joining the sport. Monique Simms for Wanderers also returned from WBSA duties, stamping her authority on the match and playing with great maturity. Imogen Pratt played well in a defensive midfield role for Palace as did Alesha Hales on the right side of midfield. However as the game wore on, Palace legs wore out and Wanderers made the most of its opportunities in front of goal.
Goal scorers: Wanderers – J White 2, P Ackland 2

Villa 3 d County 0
Villa maintained its strong hold on 2nd position on the ladder on Saturday. Rebecca Hough is proving a valuable signing for Villa this year, growing in confidence each week as her ball skills improve rapidly throughout match play. Also for Villa, Melanie Wilmot controlled her position, distributing well and providing excellent off ball movement to support her team mates. Soaking up sustained pressure has become part of the County game, with Ashley Tye as goal keeper, urgently covering ground to deflect a goal bound ball in the first half, much to the delight of her back line. Jess Boyd looked dangerous in attack for County but found it difficult to negotiate the solid defence and Villa held on to claim three goals and three points.
Goal scorers: Villa – C Ellis 2, J Wood 1

City 4 d Millicent 0
Millicent began the game strongly with Adele Cooper returning from injury to strengthen the home side. Jess Stephenson played a midfield role for City, distributing well for forwards and also claiming a goal of her own. City’s defence was unyielding with Erin Ireland again showing her versatility on the pitch, dominating her time in the backline as well as getting on the scorecard. Bethany Bennett played in goals for Millicent and despite conceding two in each half, saved many more strikes on the goal. Millicent’s progress to date this year should make for an interesting encounter against County next week.
Goal scorers: City – J Stephenson, K Kourmouzis, J Van Dijk, E Ireland

The Junior Development Squad met again at Blue Lake Sports Park at 12.45pm. Despite a shaky start, the girls settled into match play well and displayed excellent skills, shooting from long range when presented with an open goal.

This week’s fixtures heralds the second half of the season, with County and Millicent opening proceedings at Blue Lake Sports Park at 1.30pm. Villa face City and Wanderers meet United at 3pm. Palace seniors head to Portland for their match.
In junior matches, County play Millicent and City match up against Palace at 12 noon, followed by a Wanderers / Villa clash at 1.30pm.

WORLD CUP ANTHEMS - NUMBER 7

"World in Motion" is a song by the British musical group New Order. It is New Order's only UK number one single. The song was released under the name Englandneworder, and was produced for the England football team's 1990 World Cup campaign. As a result it features several members of the 1990 English team, as well as comedian Keith Allen, who co-wrote the lyrics..

A rap is performed by Jamaican-born England player John Barnes towards the end of the track. The rap part was co-written by former Liverpool player, Craig Johnston. In addition to Barnes, the entire squad sing on parts of the track. It is claimed that the apparent quotes from other

The single was re-released for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, this time with the track "Such a Good Thing" replacing "The B-Side". It failed to enter the UK Top 40. The 2002 version was planned to have David Beckham performing the rap, but the F.A vetoed the idea. It was due to have been re-released again in remixed form for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. However despite a UK release date of 29 May 2006 a last minute decision was taken to shelve this release and the remix has never surfaced.

The legendary "They think it's all over" quotation uttered by football commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme at the end of the 1966 World Cup Final between England and West Germany is utilised at the beginning and end of the track (though not the original; Wolstenholme re-recorded his famous phrase especially for the producers), and somewhat less known samples, such as "A beauty scored by Bobby Charlton" and "We Want Goals" are taken from Goal!, the official documentary film on the 1966 tournament; the voice in question used here is actor Nigel Patrick.

It is currently being used in the commercial for Mars.

In 2010, prior to the 2010 World Cup it was voted the #1 England football anthem, by the British public.

Match Report: Wimmera South Coast Eagles vs. Heart – 17 June 2010

On a chilly & overcast Wednesday night a few hundred onlookers seized the opportunity to watch several first-team players in action as Melbourne Heart faced Wimmera South Coast Eagles at the home ground of North Geelong Soccer Club. Not a single Vuvuzela was heard – a welcome respite.

Whilst several new faces on both sides were given the opportunity to impress Van’t Schip, Dutchman Rutger Worm and local Kamal Ibrahim lit up the pitch in the first half, producing several dangerous runs down their respective wings and connecting well with teammates.

Heart started calmly – in control and retaining possession. Attacks were built up from defence and the team seemed to enjoy moving the ball around and allowing everyone a touch. Whilst the pitch wasn’t in spectacular condition and at ground level one could notice an elevation in the middle, it was interesting to see that Heart kept the ball low, exploited the width and were confident in controlling the at-times wildly bouncing ball.

On the rare occasion the young and speedy Eagles crossed the half-way line, they were quickly cut off and dispossessed.

The first highlight of the match had Sibon trying a lob over the Eagles keeper from the corner of the box and hitting the crossbar. Ominous signs of things to come. Soon afterward fans were given an opportunity to shake off the frostbite by applauding Heart’s first goal, with Hoffman taking the honours after a well timed shot from inside the box beat the Eagles keeper.

Sibon was further given a few chances to open his account during the first half with some well-directed headers, but the Eagles keeper managed to defend his goal well. At the half time break the score was 1-0.

The first half had considerably more Heart first-team players on the pitch than the second. Amongst the players were Bolton, Marrone, Hamill, Colosimo, Worm, Sibon, Ibrahim, Hoffman, Babalj and Taseski – with Aloisi, Heffernan, Thompson and a few others watching from the sidelines and happily signing autographs and taking photos.

The second half saw extra trialists replace several Heart players. The highest profile was Theo Markelis who has previously trained in Valencia’s academy alongside players such as David Villa.
The Eagles were resurgent on the re-start and started exploiting their speed and creating several goal-scoring chances on the counterattack. Seemingly against the run of play, approximately 15 minutes into the second half Heart got on the scoreboard again, this time after an lucky own-goal, with a bouncing ball coming off a defender past the Eagles goalkeeper.

Wimmera refused to say die and with Van’t Schip watching and several players keen to impress soon got a goal back. A nice piece of counterattacking play was worked through the midfield and the Eagles striker put the ball past the Heart substitute goalkeeper.

In the remaining 20 minutes, Heart had several clear-cut goal chances, but they were saved expertly by the Eagles keeper. Just before full-time Eli Babalj made the score 3:1, beating the goalkeeper after being on the receiving end of a fantastic through-ball.

All-in-all, this was Melbourne Heart’s first friendly match and the result was not imperative. Van’t Schip previously stressed the importance of developing Heart’s own ‘style’ and if we are to see more of the same, fans can expect to see attractive short-passing football with talented and confident players who have the technical skills to use the ball.

Honorable mentions go to the Yarraside Terrace Group who traveled from Melbourne to fly the Heart flags and banners, to Wimmera South Coast Eagles for not using the Jabulani match-ball, and to the North Geelong Soccer Club canteen, which provided good quality Cevapi to combat the temperature and ensure rigor mortis did not set in.

WORLD CUP ANTHEMS - NUMBER 8

At number 8 is the Scotland World Cup classic by Del Amitri, Don't Come Home too Soon.

Pity it didnt work.

So long, go on and do your best,
Let all France have whiskey on it's breath,
The world may not be shaking yet but you might prove them wrong,
Even long shots make it

So go then, out into history,
and show them how easy it can be,
you might not believe it yet but pretty soon you'll see,
Even long shots make it,

Just don't come home too soon,
Just don't come home too soon,

And I don't care what people say,
we can laugh it all away,
But if I have a dream at all for once you won't be on that stupid plane

And the world may not be shaking yet,
but you might prove them wrong,
Even long shots make it

Kick off!‏

Dear scott,

Today's the big kick off! World Cup 2010 has finally begun.

As 1GOAL fans, we're all looking for least two things to happen during the tournament: Our favourite team to hit the back of the net -- preferably more than once -- and a global call for universal education loud enough to make it happen.

Today, we get a chance to help make both these dreams come true by taking on the new 1GOAL, 1Friend challenge.

Here's how it works: First, sign up online, pledging that for every goal your favourite team scores during the World Cup, you'll ask at least 1 friend to send a special yellow card to world leaders, urging them to swiftly secure quality education for all.

We'll add up the pledges and deliver them directly to each squad -- so they'll know every goal they score will grow the global campaign to give 72 million children a shot at a better future.

We can make education for all the permanent legacy of the 2010 World Cup. But with the first match kicking off in just a few hours, there's no time to lose. Please sign up for the 1GOAL, 1Friend challenge today:

www.join1goal.org/r/1g1f/

Inviting your friends is easy. After your team scores a goal, we'll send you all the info you need and the link to our special yellow card petition, calling on world leaders to guarantee education for all.

We'll deliver all the yellow cards from you and your friends directly to world leaders at the Education Summit in Cape Town, happening just before the final match in July.

Top government officials from all over the world will meet there to discuss the 72 million children who are still denied a basic education. How much they are willing to do will depend on how loud our voice becomes.

That's why FIFA, top footballers from Ronaldo to Pele, global superstars like Shakira and millions of football fans from every nation have come together to support 1GOAL for World Cup 2010 -- Education for All.

For the players on the pitch, fans around the world, and the children who are counting on us for a better future, let's make the 2010 World Cup a victory to remember.

Please sign up for the 1GOAL, 1Friend challenge today:

Thanks for making a difference,
The 1GOAL team

BLUE'S NEWS BY LEW FERGUSON

BLUE LAKE v PORTLAND

Blue Lake hosted Portland hoping to get a win to keep them in touch with the leading group, Portland on the other hand have shown improvement over the last couple of weeks and would have gone into the game with the hope of taking at least a point back to Victoria.
Blue Lake started like a house on fire and could have been two up in the first ten minutes when Thomson had two good chances but failed to convert. The Blues midfield were well on top and some slick passing in the first half hour gave them plenty of confidence, but the reward for all this possession was zilch due to not being able to break through the Portland defence and (especially)Boers in goals. While they were controlling the midfield Portland was still able to make quick breaks and threatened to score against the run of play with the skilful Atoairesei causing problems and with the help of Chapman was keen to take advantage of the fact the Blues could not score. Only a brilliant save from Armandi stopped Atoairesei from the first goal after a terrific shot. The game started to lose its intensity at this stage but livened up after a good cross by Guess caused a defensive error by Portland and left Chatindiara with a tap in to finally open the account.

The second half started as the first had finished with a very lack lustre display. Blue Lake were still dominating possession but were unable to break through the last line with Hatton, Miller and goal keeper Boers all playing very well. Reiner for the Blues who scored his first A Grade goals the week before was very unlucky not to add two more with excellent headers only to see the agile Boers in goals make two terrific saves. The Blues would have been concerned that a one goal buffer was not going to be enough as Portland were always threatening to get a quick break and levelling the game but the leadership of Strachan at the back kept the forwards at bay. The game was finally put out of Portlands reach when a great ball through to Vujica from Thomson allowed the youngster to turn his man and hit a cracking shot into the back of the net.
The game petered out after this and gave the Blues the win they needed, however if they are to match it with the teams above them they need to improve on both their intensity and their goal scoring, Portland would not be happy going home without any points but coach Gerritsen would be reasonably happy that his side is improving and the signs are there for them to improve even further as the season continues.
Best players:
Blue Lake, Strachan, Vujica, Reiner and Guess
Portland, Boers, Atoairesei, Miller and Chapman

SHARK ATTACK BY JOHN BRUTTOMESSO

In Round 5 , the Sharks travel to Naracoorte after coming close beating Inter in the previous week.

Sad news for the Sharks, new player Anthony Adesanmi will be returning back to the UK within the next week due to family reasons.

Missing from the line up this week was Lance Da Rocha & Damian Stemberger.

Sharks have been struggling to convert chances for goal, so the focus this week was to improve on their finishing.

The Sharks started just as asked by coach Bruttomesso, and the first goal (4min)of the day came from a well directed pass by Tobin, who found the feet of Weistra.

Weistra took on the United defence and shot for goal. The ball reflected off the post but Weistra followed up and ensure it was over the line. Score 1-0

The Sharks were controlling the game, and placing enormous pressure on their opposition.

Soon after (9min) another goal by scored by Weistra who finished some good passages of play by the Sharks midfield combination of Kennett ,Gordon, Widdison & Tobin. Score 2-0

The game all of a sudden changed, and United was awarded a penalty after Referee Stephenson took his time to point to the spot, when United Brazilian forward was fouled in the box by Sharks defender Bytheway. Score 2-1

United crowd was behind their team, however the Sharks kept their composure and just persisted with attack after attack, but unfortunately all unsuccessful.

The luck was definitely not with the Sharks, and the poor form of not being able to score goals was starting show signs of frustration for the Sharks.

At the (33 min), a corner kick by United resulted in a ‘6yd box’ goal scramble where the Sharks defence could not clear the ball, but United Brazilian fwd was able to tap the ball into goal, giving Naracoorte their second. Score 2-2.

Sharks started the second half with a slight change to their formation.

Sharks Coach Bruttomesso moved Tobin into the forward line pairing up with Weistra.

This change proved to work as it was the (55min), when Weistra score his third to claim a hatrick. Score 3-2

Best on ground performance from Kennett, Tobin & Gordon saw the Sharks lift in the second half, applying more pressure on the United defence, but with Nzeakor, Widdison, Adesanmi holding strong United were unable to penetrate the Sharks solid defence.

Sharks retained majority of the possession displaying some excellent ball movement down and across the park.

Naracoorte were playing counter attack style football, and one time the Sharks defence were caught flat footed, but fortunately Sharks keeper Fuller was able to prevent United scoring another goal in a 1v1 challenge.

The Sharks were persistent in attacking the goals, when relief at the (87min) from the Sharks bench came when Kennett rose above the pack to score a nice header from a well taken corner. Score 4-2.

The game ended with a score of 4-2, resulting Sharks gaining 3 premiership points to remain in third position on the WBSA ladder , 2 points behind Inter.

Goals: M.Weistra 3, T.Kennett 1

Best Players: M.Weistra, T.Kennett, R.Tobin

Other Scores:

U12 won 3-2

U17 won 3-0

B Grade won 6-2

A Grade won 4-2

Sharks next game against Centrals will be the biggest test for them this year, after losing narrowily to premiership favourites Apollo 2-0 and drawing 1-1 with Inter.

Sharks will need to find some finishing form to ensure they convert their chances, if they have any chance of remaining in the Top 4, and win more games.

Losing a quality player like Adesanmi will cause a massive hole in the Sharks defence, but experienced Club captain Da Rocha is ready to return from injury and take on the responsibility of replacing Adesanmi as the Sharks centre back.

Coach Bruttomesso said that the Sharks do well in the first third & second third of the pitch, but lack in the last third which is where goals must be scored. The difference between us and the top 2 teams, is the abilty to finish off. We create so many chances, and defend very well, we just don’t finish off all our hard work, which is disappointing, but it is an area that we need to work hard in and improve

FERGUSON SCORES AGAIN!

Former Round Ball star, Callum Ferguson has scored for the second time in less than a week as North Geelong Warriors Under 21s continued their winning ways on the weekend.

The Young Warriors are continuing their attacking brand of football and it is paying off in dividends, we’re even seeing two youngsters each week sitting on the bench for the seniors and surely a bright sign for the coaches planning for the future. The young Warriors took Fawkner apart with an emphatic 4 nil score line courtesy of goals to Callum Ferguson, Dean Taravillo, Nathan Cook and Jimmy Watson. Two clean sheets for Zilic also a boost for confidence and maintains pressure on the number 1 spot.

All proceeds from the song will benefit African charities including the official campaign of the 2010 FIFA World Cup “20 Centers for 2010.”

“I feel blessed that ‘Sign Of A Victory’ was selected to be part of the 2010 FIFA World Cup,” Kells said. “The FIFA World Cup is an event that brings the world together and inspires us to be and do the best we can. It’s this uplifting feeling that I tried to capture in the song.”

“It’s also a great honor to perform with the Soweto Spiritual Singers,” he added. “They represent the best of South Africa and I’m proud to work with such a talented group.”
